After a highly successful first season, Hallmark Channel’s CEDAR COVE comes back for its second season with more heart-warming small town stories, both with a lovely dose of romance and good old-fashioned justice. At the heart of CEDAR COVE is municipal court judge Olivia Lockhart (Andie MacDowell) and, in Season 1, after divorcing her husband and reclaiming her independent and zest for life, Olivia fell in love with the town’s newest newspaperman, Jack Griffith (Dylan Neal). Love seemed to be in the air in Season 1, with Olivia’s best friend Grace Sherman (Teryl Rothery) also began tentatively wading into the dating pool with local rancher, Cliff Harting (Sebastian Spence). Then also falling under Cupid’s spell were Olivia and Grace’s full-grown daughters, Justine (Sarah Smyth) and Maryellen (Elyse Levesque). Justine was caught up in a tug-of-war for her heart between her former fiancé Warren Saget (Brennan Elliott), a local land developer and businessman, and Seth Gunderson (Corey Sevier), a fisherman looking for a way to create a business that would keep him on land. Maryellen’s eye was caught an artist, John Bowman (Charlie Carrick). But as always with affairs of the heart, the path of true love is not as easy as expected. Everyone had some deep soul-searching to do about their true feelings and who they wanted to spend their life with. [Read more…]

TCA 2014: Quick Takes From CBS’s TCA Presentations for MADAM SECRETARY, NCIS: NEW ORLEANS, SCORPION, BATTLE CREEK, STALKER

July 18, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

On Day 10 of the 16-day biannual Television Critic’s Association Summer 2014 Press Tour, CBS introduced its new programming and the following is a snapshot-look at a few of its new series debuting Fall 2014.

MADAM SECRETARY
“Madam Secretary” is CBS’ new political drama starring Tea Leoni, as Elizabeth McCord, a former CIA analyst who is the newly appointed Secretary of State. Co-starring is Tim Daly, as her husband, and Zeljko Ivanek, as the White House Chief of Staff, the show offers a strong portrayal of life inside and outside the White House, as well as its thorny interoffice politics. The show is a fast-paced and finely-tuned political thriller with a bit of a dark-side when another layer of the story comes to light. One of the more interesting features is that Leoni and Daly’s characters share a very supportive and loving relationship, which is rarely seen in television marriages. It is refreshing and helps the audience feel like their characters are worth rooting for in the midst of global politics, which can get very ugly and cut-throat. The multi-faceted characters and multi-layered storylines make this one of the strongest new shows debuting this Fall. Point of interest: Morgan Freeman, who co-starred with Tea Leoni in the film “Deep Impact,” is one of the show’s executive producers along with Barbara Hall (“Homeland,” “Joan Of Arcadia”). (Premieres on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at 8:00 pm.) [Read more…]

TCA 2014: Quick Takes from the Hallmark Channel “Christmas In July” Party

July 10, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

meghan ory hallmark channel

Crown Media, parent company to the Hallmark Channel, knows how to throw a spectacular party. This year’s theme of “Christmas in July” meant that a glamorous Bel Air mansion was selected has the hosting venue, which with its jaw-dropping back terrace view of Los Angeles meant that they could showcase a 60-foot Christmas tree trimmed with ribbons, bows and twinkling lights. There was also a giant Santa’s sleigh with packages and a yummy selection of holiday treats. Then just inside the mansion’s opulent walls was a ballroom decked out like a Winter Wonderland of white with even more tantalizing confections to tempt even the most jaded of the Hollywood press.

But by far the most stunning aspect of the event was the sheer number of recognizable celebs from all of Hallmark’s landmark series CEDAR COVE and WHEN CALLS THE HEART, as well as their well-known movies and holiday films. Both CEDAR COVER and WHEN CALLS THE HEART debuted with a big splash on Hallmark and have been picked up for second seasons. CEDAR COVE returns for Season 2 on Saturday, July 19th and WHEN CALLS THE HEART returns with is second season in May 2015. [Read more…]

TCA 2014: Quick Takes From the WGN America, Discovery and BBC America TCA Presentations

July 10, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

manhattan wgn america

Day 2 of the 16-day biannual Television Critic’s Association Summer 2014 Press Tour started off with introductions of new programming from Discovery, WGN America and BBC America. The following is a snapshot look at their new series, as well as what was noteworthy from the featured presentations.

WGN AMERICA
“Manhattan” is a new drama series set back in the 1940’s when the U.S. government was striving to discover the secret to make an atomic bomb. It tells the stories of the men and women who were scientists, mathematicians, soldiers and the wives that had to keep this massive secret and were not even sure what the end goal was at the time. Invoking the nostalgia from the era, the show plays like a classic movie with each episode a new chapter in a dark tale of trying to live a normal life in the midst of an extraordinary situation. With secrets and classified material embruing their entire world, there is an underlying boiling tension. It becomes a question of who can you really trust and is the government telling them everything they need to know about their highly confidential mission. The show appears to captured the innate glamour of the era with classic cars and stylish clothing while merging it with the dusty, secret-filled world of a town that was not even allowed to have a name. Apparently, it was just too dangerous to even be a name on the map. (Premieres July 27, 2014.) [Read more…]

ARROW Preview: A War Is Brewing in “City of Blood”

April 30, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

arrow city of blood

It was inevitable that someone close to Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) would eventually die. All heroes paint a bulls-eye on their loved ones the second they take on the responsibility of being a champion. In Oliver’s case, his fate was predetermined by the events on that blasted island. Meeting Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett) was both the making of Oliver and perhaps the undoing of Oliver – and all because of a girl. Shado (Celina Jade) was blessed to have been loved by two very good men; but her death caused shockwaves that are still being felt today. Oliver may never fully escape his decision to choose Sara over Shado when Ivo (Dylan Neal) held a gun to their heads and told Oliver to choose. Slade is certainly never going to forgive Oliver, and under the influence of the Mirakuru serum, Slade’s mind is warped beyond the limits of humanity. Slade is now just a monster seething with rage and vengeance. Unfortunately, it is not totally unlike how Oliver was when he first return to Starling City – that all consuming desire for revenge at any price.

But the price of Slade’s unrelenting pursuit to destroy Oliver took a deadly toll in last week’s episode “Seeing Red.” It claimed the life of Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson). When placed in the same position of being forced to choose between two people he cared about Oliver, simply could not choose this time. He was bereft with anger, agony and helplessness. That left it up to Moira – being a mother who never ever hesitated to do whatever it took to protect her children, she willingly stepped forward and declared herself to be the one willing to die so that her children may be spared. As Slade swung his sword and sliced right through Moira, we watched in utter horror. Slade may have declared it an honorable death, but there was nothing honorable in watching a woman being cut in half before her children’s eyes just because a madman wanted to play a game. ORPHAN BLACK Redux: Sarah Got A Gun, Felix Got Chapped, and Kira Got Her Picture Taken!

April 26, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

OrphanBlack_Pair_2_FN

Season 2 of ORPHAN BLACK was off to a rip-roaring start as Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany) frantically searched for her missing daughter Kira (Skyler Wexler) – unfortunately, with both the Neolutionists and the Prolethians closing in. So it was a race against the clock for Sarah to get a gun and take down her sister pro-clone Rachel at the Dyad Institute in order to rescue Kira.

It took was some fancy clone shenanigans to get Sarah into Dyad; namely Alison had to procure a gun and get it to Sarah without the nosy cops and their monitors from finding out. Then Sarah infiltrated Dyad posing as Cosima into order to slip past Dr. Leekie (Matt Frewer) and security; and, fortunately, Rachel’s insistence on having Paul (Dylan Bruce) nearby also worked to Sarah’s advantage once things got a bit dicey.

But the terrifying surprise of it all was Rachel never had Kira; someone else had taken her. So all of Sarah’s efforts and planning to confront Rachel were for nothing. The moment Sarah realized that she did not know who had her daughter or where to begin searching for Kira was when we saw her strength disintegrate inside her. It was the helplessness that any parent would feel not knowing where their child was – and that moment of truth was devastating. [Read more…]

If you were one of the privileged few that discovered this gem of a television series last year when it first aired on BBC America, then you are a bone fide member of Clone Club. As fans are already well-aware, it is going to be a global social media party as Clone Club rises up to dominate on Twitter, Facebook and all other social media venues on April 19th.

So what does Season 2 of ORPHAN BLACK have in store? The answer is obvious: more clones. That’s right – plural. In a nice twist at the end of the first season, ORPHAN BLACK’s hero Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany) came face-to-face with the original clone Rachel Duncan. Rachel joins the ranks of the known clones: Sarah, Beth, Cosima, Alison, Helena, Katja, Danielle, Aryanna, Janika and Rachel. The other new clone that viewers will meet in Season 2 is Jennifer.
