Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Reasons Why GOSSIP GIRL Star Penn Badgley Really Needs to STFU!

January 27, 2011 By theTVaddict 13 Comments

There is nothing we at theTVaddict.com despise more than ungrateful actors. Which is why, in response to GOSSIP GUY Penn Badgley’s inexplicable insistence on dissing his day job — you know, the one that pays him ridiculous sums of money for what we’re fairly certain 99.999% of the country would kill for the opportunity to do — we wanted to take this opportunity to send him a message. A message that goes a little something like this: (a) STFU YOU UNGRATEFUL ACTOR! And (b) the grass is not always greener. As evidence by Today’s TV Addict Top 5.

Luke Perry
Best known for: Bring sideburns back as BEVERLY HILLS 90210’s original bad boy Dylan McKay.
Career trajectory: In an attempt to find more mature roles, Perry exited the series in 1994. What he found was a string of forgettable characters in equally forgettable made-for-television movies such as INVASION and THE TRIANGLE as well as short-lived dramas like JEREMIAH, WINDFALL and JOHN FROM CINCINNATI.
Where are they now: Perry can next be seen this Saturday January 29 in the Hallmark Movie Channel Original Premiere of GOODNIGHT FOR JUSTICE, directed by fellow 90210 star Jason Priestley.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas
Best known for: Popularizing the “three name” moniker in the late 90’s as HOME IMPROVEMENT’s breakout star Randy Taylor.
Career trajectory: After asking to be let out of his HOME IMPROVEMENT contract to focus on his “studies,” the young man responsible for single-handedly keeping the teen magazine industry afloat during the late 90’s parlayed his post-IMPROVEMENT fame into plethora of of box office duds that eventually relegated him to guest star status on the likes of 8 SIMPLE RULES FOR DATING MY TEENAGER DAUGHTER [RIP] and VERONICA MARS [Double RIP!].
Where are they now: Although rumored to have given up acting entirely in leu of attending Columbia University, Thomas’ whereabouts is currently unknown.

Channel Surfing with CT: TRUE BLOOD, BIG BROTHER, AMERICAN IDOL & More!

August 18, 2010 By Couch Tater 1 Comment

Hell hath no fury like a vampire scorned. Just ask Russell Edgington, the bloodsucker who, after interrupting a TBBN telecast and declaring to the world “We will eat you, after we eat your children”, changed the game as it is played in the TRUE BLOOD universe. From the beginning, the show existed in an alternate universe in which vampirism is, if not accepted, then certainly acknowledged, with a group called the American Vampire League fighting for a Vampire Rights Amendment. But as Edgington put it in his anger-fueled, terrifying address, “mine is the true face of vampires! Why would we seek equal rights? You are not our equals.” On a show that is already having its best season to date, it was a chilling moment that hinted of a great war to come between the immortals and their prey. From the edge of our seats, we could only say, “Bring it!”

Speaking of Sunday-night vamps, how amazing was the sequence in which THE GATES? Dylan and Claire dealt with the aftermath of her being bitten by bad boy bloodsucker Christian? It was a fascinating take on one of the oldest of soap storylines, rape, with the oft-sexualized bite replacing sex as the offensive act. Claire’s husband was shocked and horrified that his wife had allowed another man to sully their union, while she was left to deal with questions of whether or not she’d brought the “attack” on by spending so much time with a man she knew wanted desperately to destroy her marriage and bring out her repressed vampiric tendencies. While watching the emotion-packed scenes unfold, it was easy to forget that these were vampires talking about an unwanted nibble and not a traditional couple dealing with the aftermath of a sexual violation. It kills me that this show, which took a while to find its footing, is being trampled by reruns of CSI: MIAMI and LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT. Given how poorly some of summer?s original, non-reality programming is doing, I don?t wanna hear anybody out there complaining when next year, June ushers in a slew of unscripted crap. You get what you ask for.

Speaking of unscripted crap, I can’t decide whether I love or loath this year’s BIG BROTHER. I thanked every God I don’t believe in when Rachel got the boot if only so I wouldn’t have to watch the most dysfunctional showmance in recent history continue to unfold. If Rachel and Brendon?s real-world loved ones have any sense whatsoever, they’ll prevent these two from hooking up outside the house. It’s one thing to be trapped in a house with those two, but to have them show up at every family event for the rest of your lives? “Rachel, could you pass the salt and the arsinic, please?” Now, of course, everything Brendon does is for his evicted girlfriend, which is kinda entertaining in a “Lord, that guy is a complete asshat” way. But between him and The Brigade (Matt, why on Earth are you still working with those buffoons?), this might well go down as the show’s most annoying season ever.

So Steven Tyler is the new AMERICAN IDOL judge, huh? Seems they went looking for someone to fulfill the “OMG, Paula is a mess” chair and, well, I suspect they found the perfect applicant! Frankly, all I can think of is the famous exchange from the movie “Tootsie” in which a director says, “I’d like to make her a little more attractive. How far back can you pull?” and the cameraman asks, “How do you feel about Cleveland?”

I’m not a Blackberry user, but whenever the commercials talking about the device’s messenger service comes out and they all start talking about “BBM’s”, I can’t think of anything but bowel movements. Big bowel movements. I’m guessing that’s not exactly what Blackberry’s marketing team hoped…

Spotlight on Ben Lewis: DEGRASSI’s Latest Bad Boy

July 22, 2010 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

If there’s one thing DEGRASSI has taught us over the years, it’s that gone means anything but forgotten. So while Fiona may have left both New York City and abusive beau Bobby behind, she’ll soon find out that like a bad penny, you can’t keep a good villain from turning up again… usually when you least expect it. ??In other words, expect Bobby Beckonridge — the kind of troubled teen who would make BEVERLY HILLS 90210’s Dylan Walsh look like SAVED BY THE BELL’s Screech — to show up at Canada’s most popular high school before too long.

Lucky for this TV Addict, Bobby’s portrayer, Ben Lewis, is nothing like the abusive boyfriend he plays on the wildly-addictive teen sudser. In fact, it turns out he’s a downright nice guy who was thrilled — and maybe even a little surprised — to finally land a role on the show that has become something of a right of passage for young Canadian thespians.

“I was starting to have a bit of a complex about it, because I had auditioned several times and had been close, but didn’t walk away with a part,” admits the affable actor who was kind enough to take some time during the opening night party for the premiere of “Love, Loss, and What I Wore” to talk chat about his new gig. “Then this character came along! I was originally told they wanted somebody younger. But after the first round of auditions, they didn’t find anybody, so I got another call.”

Snap Judgments: $#*! MY DAD SAYS, MIKE & MOLLY, HAWAII FIVE-0, THE DEFENDERS & BLUE BLOODS

May 20, 2010 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

According to the CBS official Description: $#*! MY DAD SAYS, based on the popular Twitter feed by Justin Halpern, stars Emmy Award winner William Shatner as Ed Goodson, a forthright and opinionated dad who relishes expressing his unsolicited and often wildly politically incorrect observations to anyone within earshot.  Nobody is immune from Ed’s rants, including his sons, Henry, a struggling writer-turned-unpaid blogger; and Vince (Will Sasso), the meek half of his husband/wife real estate duo with domineering Kathleen (Nicole Sullivan).  When Henry finds he can no longer afford to pay rent to his pretty roommate — and secret admirer — Sam (Stephanie Lemelin), Ed reveals a soft spot and invites Henry to move in with him. Henry agrees, knowing that the verbal assault will not abate and now there will be no escape.  Describing their father/son relationship is tricky – but Ed will easily come up with a few choice words.

According to the TV Addict: Despite our lack of enthusiasm for this 140 character comedy (and no, we’re not just bitter that CBS has yet to come calling for $#*! @THETVADDICT SAYS. Okay maybe a little!) old is most definitely the new black. Which is why William Shatner, Betty White’s male Hollywood equivalent will soon be making room on his very crowded award shelf for a Best Male Actor in a Comedy Emmy. Ask the Addict: Spoilers on LOST, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, ROOKIE BLUE, THE GOOD WIFE, PARENTHOOD, GLEE & More!

May 4, 2010 By theTVaddict 6 Comments

As a fellow EVERWOOD addict, I’m very excited for Gregory Smith’s return to the small screen in ROOKIE BLUE. What’s the word on the street? — Connor
The TV Addict: Having just recently had the chance to screen the pilot, fans of the artist formerly known as Ephram Brown will be happy to discover that ROOKIE BLUE does in fact live up to its billing of GREY’S ANATOMY meets NYPD BLUE by delivering a competently produced police procedural with the usual array of TV tropes that go with it (See: Inter-office romance and secrets galore!) That said, would we really be as excited for the show if it didn’t star an EVERWOOD alum? Probably not. But we’ll get to more of that in our full-fledged review coming soon.

Do you think tonight’s episode of LOST titled “The Candidate” will bring with it a definitive answer as to which Kwon, be it Sun or Jin, Jacob was referring to? — Amber
The TV Addict: Yes. But don’t take our word for it, here’s what actor Daniel Dae Kim coyly teased during a one-on-one interview with him last week late last week. “There will be progress in that regard.” Adding, “No” when we followed up with whether or not he was surprised as to who was the lucky candidate was.

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Issues with Last Night’s LOST

April 21, 2010 By theTVaddict 7 Comments

It was all a setup
While last night’s episode certainly had its moments, with honorary mentions going to a Sun/Jin reunion almost two years in the making and Sawyer’s observation that Lapidus looked as though he had just stepped out of a Burt Reynolds movie, we couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed by what really amounted to nothing more than a setup for the closing arc of the season. Something that wouldn’t normally bother us except for the fact that we’re talking about the final episodes ever, and quite frankly, we expected more.

Fake Locke
Our issue with Fake Locke (or as we’ll be referring to him for the rest of this post as “Flocke”) are twofold. One, does it not strike anyone else as mighty convenient that thanks to the revelation that Jack’s Dad Christian Shephard was nothing more than Smokey in disguise, LOSTerminds Lindlof and Cuse now have a go-to answer for many of the show’s potential lingering questions! And two, let’s just get something straight: Flocke can transform into a puff of black smoke and wipe out the inhabitants of an Ancient Temple in mere minutes, yet he sends Sayid to do his dirty work? Seriously. Which brings us to…

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Reasons Why We LOVED Last Night’s MODERN FAMILY

January 21, 2010 By theTVaddict 12 Comments

manny_gloria

The Remote Control
First and foremost, last nights MODERN FAMILY has finally given this TV Addict an ally in our seemingly never-ending fight to stave off really obvious technical support questions from friends and family. Seriously. The next time they who shall not be named asks us how to operate their television, rather than dole out our standard eye-roll (which incidentally, would make PARKS AND RECREATION’s April Ludgate proud), we’ll simply refer them to last night’s episode and hand them our soon-to-be-designed “If Haley Can Do it…” sticker!

Guest Stars
Both Chazz Palminteri as Jay’s possibly-gay-but-evidently-not best friend Shorty and Kristen Schaal as the slightly inappropriate online object of Manny’s affection (“Her name is Whitney. I met her in an online book club. We both like vampire fiction an the romance of eternal life.”) both served as prime examples of guest stars serving the story, not the other way around. Something that GLEE’s Ryan Murphy and his increasingly crowded roster of guest stars (Kristin Chenoweth! Idina Menzel! Neil Patrick Harris!) should probably take note of.

On the Fly… with THE DEEP END Star Matt Long

January 19, 2010 By theTVaddict 5 Comments

matt_long

WHY HE LOOKS FAMILIAR: For the simple reason that Long’s big break came headlining fifty percent of one of this TV Addict’s all-time favorite brilliant-but-cancelled series. “Man, when people walk up to me and say something about JACK & BOBBY it really means a lot to me and I really appreciate it,” revealed Long on a recent one-one-one during last week’s Television Critics Press Tour in Pasenda. “The longer I go in my career, the more I realize that it was such an incredible opportunity and experience that doesn’t happen all that often.”
