Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Top TV Moments From the Week That Was

November 13, 2009 By theTVaddict 5 Comments

MAD MEN
For us every-day TV Addicts who let’s face it, don’t always pick up on the subtle subtleties of every look, nuance and intricate line of dialogue that are packed into each and every hour of the Matthew Weiner masterpiece, Sunday’s game-changer of a finale that had Don leading Roger and Bertram (Sterling and Cooper respectively) in a coup d’état in an effort to take control of their own destiny by secretly starting their own agency was plain and simple mad mad fun. Now, if only we had some assurances that we haven’t seen the last of Ken, Paul and Sal!

90210
After almost a season and a half, this week’s installment of 90210 finally delivered that missing piece of the puzzle. The spark of genuine friendship between our leading players upon Liam finally revealing to Dixon, Teddy and surfer chick Ivy the reason why he looks like he’s ready to ‘Hulk smash’ at a moments notice. Seriously. All that was missing from this next gen gang’s vow to help Liam take Naomi’s duplicitous sister Jen down was an iconic Brandon/Steve/Dylan fist-bump.

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: And the Emmy Nomination Goes To…

October 16, 2009 By theTVaddict 6 Comments

emmy_winners

GLEE’s Jane Lynch, for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In the hand of almost any other actor, an ultra-competitive cheerleading coach whose win-at-any-cost attitude compels her to not only separate the GLEE Club into competing factions based on the color of their skin, but ‘out’ a pregnant student’s ‘secret life’ would be both horrific and offensive. Yet in the hands of Jane Lynch, it’s funny. Really funny.

MODERN FAMILY’s Ed O’Neill, for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series. Now that William Shatner is no longer eligible for his annual Emmy nod, voters are going to need another rich old white guy they can shower with praise. Enter Ed O’Neill, who in MODERN FAMILY’s fourth outing of the season continued to set the perfect tone for the craziness that goes down in the Dunphey-Pritchett abode. With bonus points for his faux outrage towards son Mitchell upon ‘discovering’ that ex-wife Dede was a surprise Sunday-night dinner guest.

August 4, 2009 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

TVD Stars Katerina Graham, Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev

9:16AM: Before we bite into live blogging THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, full disclosure: All typos, spelling and grammatical errors may-or-may-not-be as a result of one too many drinks at last night’s phenomenal CW/CBS/Showtime party.

9:19AM: “A lot of my cast-mates and I have been doing a lot of great things and it all started out with DEGRASSI,” explained THE VAMPIRE DIARIES star Nina Dobrev on the CW farm system that is DEGRASSI: THE NEXT GENERATION.

9:21AM: When asked by a reporter when the obsession with vampires will end, executive producer Julie Plec correctly answers, “Hopefully not before September 10th [when the show premieres]” Well played Plec, well played.

9:23AM: Put on the spot to make a “Sophie’s Choice” of her very own, Dobrev sidesteps choosing a favorite co-star only to reveal that in terms of the characters, “Stefan is the man who tries to reach Elena’s soul and cares about her, where as Damon has that bad boy quality which at the end of the day no girl can resist.”

Review: DARK BLUE

July 15, 2009 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

dark_blue

From the beginning, DARK BLUE — debuting tonight at 10 p.m. E.T. on TNT — lives up to it’s title: The opening sequence features extreme torture (or what FOX talking heads would insist on calling “enhanced interrogation techniques”) and is awash in azure tones, and things never really lighten up in any regard during the rest of the hour. In true anti-hero style, our lead, Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott), is a mess both physically and emotionally, cooked up by someone with a fondness for popular stereotypes: He is a tortured soul who offers redemption to those around him when not squinting and clutching his head to show us the pain he’s attempting to suppress. The pain of his past has, of course, impacted how he views the world around him. As he explains to a would-be recruit, “I see everything that needs to be fixed.”

Heavy, man. [Read more…]

All Hail the KING(S)

July 6, 2009 By theTVaddict 13 Comments

If there was a silver-lining to last night’s curious decision by HBO to withhold new episodes of TRUE BLOOD and HUNG from the schedule in lieu of the July 4 holiday weekend, it was that it gave this TV Addict some much needed time to catch up on four episodes of KINGS.

And catch up we did. Which is why we find ourselves taking a page from King Silas Benjamin (A man, who we’re fairly certain has yet to let an episode go by without some kind of pronouncement, press conference or proclamation) this morning by making an announcement of our very own: If you’re not watching KINGS — and judging form the show’s abysmal ratings, that’s 98% of you reading this — you’re missing out on the most intriguing, complex, and scandalous series of the summer.

5 Reasons KINGS Could Help Rebuild NBC’s Empire

March 13, 2009 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

nbc kings

From the embarrassment that was ROSIE LIVE! to the train-wreck car crash that was KNIGHT RIDER, ragging on NBC has become an almost-too-easy pastime for theTVaddict.com.

But what’s easy to forget in light of such massive, headline-grabbing failures is that NBC is also the network that was smart enough to give THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK time to find their audiences, renewed ratings-anemic CHUCK for a second season (and, hopefully, a third) and, in the case of Sunday night’s two-hour premiere of KINGS, has essentially given creator Michael Green (HEROES) carte-blanche to create a uniquely fascinating canvas on which to tell an epic saga. The scope of the canvas is much more reminiscent of premium-channel dramas such as THE TUDORS or ROME than the typical network fare. And the compairson goes beyond the surface, given that those shows followed the rise and fall of historic empires while KINGS takes a similar approach in retelling what is basically the story of David versus Goliath in the fictional kingdom of Gilboa (which bears a striking resemblance to modern-day Manhattan).

So without further ado, theTVaddict.com presents the top five reasons we’ll be tuning in to KINGS this Sunday at 8PM.

Random Musings: ELI STONE, 90210 & HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3

October 29, 2008 By theTVaddict 10 Comments

victor garber eli stone

The Good: From Weathersby Posner & Klein’s original and inspiring mission statement to “serve the public good and honor the public trust” that was scribbled on a napkin thirty years prior (Bartlett for America anyone?), to the master class in acting put forth by Victor “Where’s My Emmy?” Garber, “good” doesn’t even begin to describe my feelings when it comes to last night’s installment of ELI STONE. Especially now that we know that Eli’s future includes making it all the way to the Supreme Court alongside friend and mentor Jordan Weathersby. (And yes, in case you’re wondering, this TV Addict’s jaw is still partially on the floor following last night’s shocking final scene involving Maggie Decker siding with the evil that is Posner & Klein.)

The Bad: 90210. Whose committee of showrunners don’t seem to “get” that fans are not in the business of caring about couples they’ve manufactured out of thin air. Ethan and Annie’s will-they-or-won’t-they relationship is absolutely pointless when the two characters have been given zero redeeming qualities for fans to latch on to and root for. And don’t even get me started on Navid and Adrianna — I mean have those two even shared a scene together prior to last night’s episode? Memo to Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah. Your viewers are not morons and if you expect us to remain invested in this show outside of the occasional Brenda/Kelly cameo you probably should go back to the drawing board and remember that the likes of Brenda & Dylan, Ross & Rachel and Pam & Jim don’t just happen. It takes seasons of build up and hard work. So get to it.

Random Musings: 90210

brenda kelly 90210

As SMALLVILLE fans know all too well, the CW is never slow to jump on a product placement opportunity. Which is why this TV Addict has spent the better part of Wednesday scratching his head as to how the fledgling network completely missed the ball when it comes to 90210 and the loads of cash they could be making from the incredibly obvious cell phone tie in.

Let’s face it, if Emmy’s were given out this early in the season for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama, Kelly and Brenda’s cellphone carrier would most definitely have to be considered a top five candidate. Thanks to brilliance that is Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile and/or AT&T’s cellphone network [See how easy that was? To paraphrase 30 ROCK’s Tina Fey, can theTVaddict.com have our money now!?], 90210 showrunners Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah have managed to keep fans, not to mention Kelly and Brenda connected to original cast members Brandon and Dylan without (a) having pay them or (b) having to beg, plead and grovel to get them back on the show that made them famous.

FRINGE & 90210 Make this TV Addict Go “Hmmm”

September 24, 2008 By theTVaddict 11 Comments

On the surface, one wouldn’t think that J.J. Abrams mystery box known as FRINGE and the teen-centric melodrama that is 90210 would have a lot in common. But upon closer examination, it turns out that last night’s installment of both hit shows share one major characteristic — questions. Five of which theTVaddict.com is posing to you, our far smarter and better looking readers.

1) What illicits more of an “Ewww” factor — the brain surgery surrounding last night’s central mystery on FRINGE or the fact that Dixon Mills was all too happy to provide ‘protection’ for his sister Annie?

2) Which actor is getting more of the shaft in the writing department — the adorable Jasika Nicole [Agent Astrid Farnsworth], who four episodes in, still remains completely devoid of personality. Or 90210’s Cindy Walsh re-incarnate Debbie Wilson [Lori Loughlin]. Who has been given so little to do that this TV Addict had to look up her character’s first name on imdb.
