Get Ready for Season Five of 90210

July 4, 2007 By theTVaddict 7 Comments

One of the best things about living in Canada — aside from the free health care and low crime rate — is TVtropolis. Every day, TVtropolis allows this TV Addict to re-live some of the shows that are pretty much responsible for turning me into a self-proclaimed TV Addict. BEVERLY HILLS 90210, FRIENDS, SEINFELD, FRASIER, GRACE UNDER FIRE — TVtropolis has it all, with more of your favorites on the way.

Starting this Fall, Tiffani Amber-Thiessen will make her long-awaited appearance on BEVERLY HILLS 90210 when Valerie Malone moves into the Walsh house. Yes, you heard it hear first. TVtropolis has announced that come September 2007, the network will not only give us season five of BEVERLY HILLS 90210, we’ll also get seasons six through eight. So get ready for Brandon and Kelly’s much anticipated hook-up, Dylan’s short-lived marriage to a mob boss’ daughter, and of course Donna finally losing her you know what.

Also joining the TVtropolis line-up is FAMILY GUY, FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR and this TV Addict’s long awaited shot at fame and fortune, when he guest stars on the hit game-show INSIDE THE BOX. Stay Tuned…

theTVaddict Sizes Up ABC’s New Dramas

May 16, 2007 By theTVaddict 6 Comments

BIG SHOTS
BIG SHOTS is the story of four friends at the top of their game.. until the women in their lives enter the room. Sound familiar? Think Desperate HouseMEN. But hey, when these men include Michael Vartan (ALIAS) and Dylan McDermott (THE PRACTICE), who’s complaining?

CASHMERE MAFIA
Four ambitious and sexy women try to balance their glamorous and demanding careers with their complex personal lives in the city that never sleeps. WOW, ABC really is going out on a limb with this one! Do viewers need another DESPERATE SEX AND THE CITY mash-up? Our guess is no.

DIRTY SEXY MONEY
The good — Peter Krause has returned to TV. The bad — if the footage screened at the ABC UpFront is any indication, his return may be short-lived. DIRTY SEXY MONEY did not impress and with a cast featuring the likes of Krause, Donald Sutherland, a Baldwin brother and Samaire Armstrong (THE OC), this TV addict expected a lot more.

ELI STONE
Greg Berlanti, the genius behind some of theTVaddict’s favourite shows (namely EVERWOOD and JACK & BOBBY) returns to television (after taking a ‘break’ to help right the BROTHERS & SISTER ship) with ELI STONE. The story of a successful San Francisco lawyer who tries to find a deeper meaning to his life when he realizes money isn’t everything. Okay, the concept’s a little hokey but what Greg Berlanti writes, this TVaddict will TiVo.

PRIVATE PRACTICE
What hasn’t been said about the GREY’S ANATOMY spin-off PRIVATE PRACTICE? Only this: Could Shonda Rhimes and ABC not have taken the time to think of a better title? Was PRIVATE PRACTICE the best we could do? Really?

PUSHING DAISIES
Every once in awhile, a television show comes along that changes the game. ER revitalized the medical drama, FRIENDS ushered in a new era of comedies and PUSHING DAISIES will, well we’re not actually sure what DAISIES will do. The one thing we can promise you is that it’s unlike anything on television (which is a good thing) and you’ll fall in love with DAISIES the moment they spring to life. Yup, you heard it here first folks. PUSHING DAISIES is the fall’s next big hit.

WOMEN’S MURDER CLUB
CSI + LAW & ORDER – MEN = BORING

Tune in tomorrow for theTVaddict’s take on ABC’s new drama offerings. And yes, CAVEMEN is just as bad of an idea on screen as it is on paper. Really, truly dreadful.

theTVaddict Mailbag

April 21, 2007 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

This week, theTVaddict called out to readers for TV related questions (anything to avoid real work). Frankly, I was a bit surprised at the sheer number of questions — seriously folks, I didn’t expect this to turn into real work! But since it did, I thought I’d post all the answers I’ve tracked down for you so far. If your question hasn’t been answered, stay tuned…

If you have a question for next week’s Ask Ausiello theTVaddict Mailbag, post away below or feel free to email info@thetvaddict.com.

HappyFan Asks: Since you mentioned it, when is KIDNAPPED coming to DVD? I [apparently was the only one] who loved that series!
theTVaddict: KIDNAPPED, one of my personal favourite series of the fall makes its way to DVD this Tuesday April 24. The complete series (all thirteen episodes) are currently available at amazon for $37.46. More importantly, NBC was kind enough to give the producer’s fair warning with regards to their impending doom — so they were able to craft a proper (and apparently fantastic) ending to the short-lived series.

Frank asks: I need to start my season finale schedule. When are these shows wrapping up their seasons? How I Met Your Mother, Heroes, Veronica Mars, Lost, Scrubs and The Office
theTVaddict: Great Question Frank! Since you’re obviously too lazy to look this up yourself here are the season finale dates for your favourite shows 🙂
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER – May 14
HEROES – May 21
VERONICA MARS – May 22 (Two-Hour Special)
SCRUBS – May 17
THE OFFICE – May 17

Jason in the OC asks: Is Friday Night Lights worth getting into? I’ve avoided the football-themed show but it seems to be a critical darling. Isn’t it just pandering to Red Staters?
theTVaddict: Jason, FNL is so much more than just football and regardless of what state you’re in — I guarantee you’ll love it. In fact I’m so confident you’ll jump on the bandwagon that I’m going to ‘gift’ you the season premiere on iTunes (assuming you have iTunes). Just email me your iTunes ID to info@thetvaddict.com. Yes folks, I’m that dedicated to FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS getting a second season!

Sam asks: What ever happened to ABC’s midseason replacement Traveler and can someone tell me once and for all if the Heroes season finale will be 2 hours?
theTVaddict: Well Sam, technically the column is called ‘Got A Question for theTVaddict’ not ‘Got TWO Questions…’ No worries though, I’ll let it slide this time. ABC’s midseason replacement has actually become a summer series (probably not a good sign). THE TRAVELER premiers on ABC on Wednesday May 30 at 10PM. Stay tuned for an early look from theTVaddict.com, coming soon. In terms of HEROES, the finale is one hour, and will air on NBC on May 21.

David asks: Ok…when the heck is The N going to give some new episodes of Degrassi? The season is probably already over for you guys up north!
theTVaddict: Firstly David, the season isn’t over for your friends up in the Great White North. But it will be by the time you get to see new episodes. DEGRASSI returns to the N network on June 29, 2007 and with it comes some of your favourite recent grads. Additionally, Paige, Alex (or Palex as the kids are calling them), Marco, Dylan and Ellie all return to play prominent roles. Fans should also expect to see the return of a few Lakehurst students as Degrassi deals with the fall-out from J.T.’s shocking death.

If you have a question for next week’s Ask Ausiello theTVaddict Mailbag, post away below or feel free to email info@thetvaddict.com.

Amrie’s Take on TV: DRIVE

April 17, 2007 By theTVaddict 5 Comments

So I just got finished watching the third hour of Drive.

I have to say, I’m still really intrigued. I want to see what’s going to happen with these characters, and what it all means. One of our loyal readers commented today (hi Frank!) that he was more interested in the race than the goings-on in the lives of our racers. Or at least the life of Alex Tully (Nathan Fillion’s character). I have to say that on one level, I agree with him. Up until the last 10 minutes of tonight’s episode, as much as I love Fillion, I wasn’t interested in his character’s back-story as much as maybe I should have been (what, with him getting first billing, and all of that), but I’m completely drawn into his story line now, and I cannot wait to see what happens next week. It, of course, gets me thinking – what characters do I want to know more about, who am I rooting for?

2007 Paley Festival Recap: NIP/TUCK

March 13, 2007 By theTVaddict 8 Comments

The TV Addict himself got to pose with the original Kimber (Kelly Carlson). And no, I know what you’re thinking — she didn’t convert me to scientology.

In hindsight, the NIP/TUCK panel was perhaps the week’s most disappointing panel at this years Paley Festival. In fact, the word panel is a giant misnomer — as the night was pretty much dominated by two voices — creator Ryan Murphy and star Julian McMahon (Dr. Christian Troy). While Murphy offered up some interesting anecdotes and insight with regards to the show, star Julian McMahon dominated the conversation a little too much for this TV addict’s liking. Who knew Julian McMahon had so much in common with the centre-of-attention doctor he plays on NIP/TUCK?

That said, here’s what creator Ryan Murphy had to say with regards to the origins of NIP/TUCK, on casting the show, the infamous story-lines, stunt casting and of course, the carver controversy.

Jenny’s This Week on TV

March 11, 2007 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

Hi everybody! Ya know, one thing I noticed recently, when seeing a preview on NBC for Raines (which I’m REALLY looking forward to!), is that even the normal networks are beginning some of their shows at odd times during the season. It used to be, everything started in the fall and ended in May (or thereabouts). Then some regular type shows started airing in the summer, which is fantastic. Then seasons got split into Fall and Spring or Winter or whatever they want to call it. And now, it seems like you have shows starting in the middle of March. I don’t get it, really. Of course, there isn’t much of ANYTHING about the networks that I understand anymore. It’s all about the Benjamins, unfortunately. So I guess I do understand 1 thing. heh Well, let’s see what’s on tv this week, shall we?

Tiffani Theissen Joins WHAT ABOUT BRIAN

January 5, 2007 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

In an effort to keep up-to-date on the comings and going of SAVED BY THE BELL and BEVERLY HILLS 90210 alumni, theTVaddict.com is proud to report that Tiffani Theissen (formerly Tiffani Amber Theissen — I miss the ‘Amber’) has joined the cast of ABC’s drama WHAT ABOUT BRIAN. Theissen will play Natasha Dylan who — like every other Theissen character — is a sexy, manipulative and shrewd. Dylan becomes Dave’s (Rick Gomez) new boss at KC Gaming and enjoys playing mind games with Brian and the gang. Having never watched the show, I really have no idea what any of that means — but where Tiffani Theissen goes, this TV Addict follows.

90210 Watch: The Truth About Season 5

November 10, 2006 By theTVaddict 12 Comments

If you’re like me (and live in Canada), you’ve no doubt been re-living your youth by watching BEVERLY HILLS 90210 from the beginning on TVTropolis. Since June we’ve seen all the classics: Donna Martin Graduate, Kelly and Brenda fight for Dylan’s love, Steve continue to lose his hair, David falling into the world of drugs, John Sears, the Fraternity, Claire, Dylan’s unexpected new family, Jesse Vasquez, Donna proclaiming her eternal virginity, … well you get the idea.

Of course this week, everything changed. Just as our anticipation for the fifth season and the introduction of Valerie Malone (the incomprabable Tiffani Amber Theissen) reached a fevered pitch, episodes of 90210 travelled back in time to the series premiere?!?!?

Wanting to get to the bottom of this, theTVaddict.com contacted TVTropolis directly. Dan Kenning, the publicist for TVTropolis was kind enough to respond to my email.

We [TVTropolis] currently only have the rights to Seasons 1-4  (aka The Brenda Years). Under the terms of our CRTC license, we’re unable to air scripted programs that are less than 10 years old –so while we’d be unable to air the eps that were produced between ’97 and 2000, that still leaves us with the opportunity of acquiring a few more seasons of the series (Valerie!). Our programmers are looking into it for 2007, so I’d advise the faithful to stay tuned for further updates. (We have plenty of in-house fans of the series here, too.)

Some additional 90210 info I can share: there will be another marathon on Dec 9, this time featuring Shannen Doherty-centric episodes.

So folks you heard it hear first. For the immediate future, Valerie Malone, Brandon and Kelly’s relationship, and the quick and sudden death of Dylan’s wife Toni will have to wait for a few more years.

Re-live your youth, 90210 & Melrose Place on DVD

November 7, 2006 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Like most good stories do, it all started with a girl. I was thirteen, in junior high and obsessed with a girl named Alison. Unfortunately, Alison was in love with some guy named Dylan.

It was the very early 90’s and it seemed like all my entire grade seven class could talk about was a group of kids I had never even heard of. Walking through the halls I’d constantly hear friends mention Dylan and Brenda’s streamy relationship, how hot Kelly was and the dreaminess that was Brandon Walsh. What the frak was going on?

After a little investigation, I quickly discovered that I wasn’t living in an alternate universe. Rather my entire school was obsessed with a little show called BEVERLY HILLS 90210. Not wanting to be left off the bandwagon, I decided I’d better start watching — and thus my obsessions with the gang from West Beverly began.

90210 Finally Gets Good!

August 9, 2006 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

If you were turned off by early BEVERLY HILLS 90210 episodes because of their complete and utter lameness, (Brenda shoplifts! Brandon encounters racism! Dylan and his Dad don’t like eachother!) it’s time to tune back in.

Recent episodes, airing 3pm weekdays on TVTropolis (in Canada) are ‘classic’ 90210. Some recent highlights include:

David’s nerdy friend Scott, who never really fit in with the West Bev Gang shoots himself with a shotgun at his own birthday. Lesson learned, don’t play cowboy with your Dad’s own shotgun.

Andrea goes on a crusade to ensure West Bev makes condoms available to the student body. Classic TORI SPELLING acting moment alert: Confronting her Mom at the PTA meeting that’s being held at the Walsh house. “If you build a pool, and you know your kids are going to swim, you can build all the fences you want. But if you know they’re going to jump in the pool, don’t you think you should teach your kids how to swim.” Just in case you’re wondering, it was a metaphor for teaching your kids about safe sex.
