90210 Finally Gets Good!

July 4, 2006 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

We finally reached the end of BEVERLY HILLS 90210’s first season. Why is this such good news? Firstly, we get rid of the generic (and awful) first season credits. Season 2 (or the summer season as it may be known as) brings us the infamous ‘blue headshots’ that most 90210 fans remember fondly. Most importantly though, the show shifts focus from the cheesy after-school special antics of the Walsh twins (Brenda learns to drive! Brandon works at the school paper!), and becomes the 90210 we remember and love. The adventures officially begin! Brenda and Dylan run off to Tijuana (Mr. Walsh goes nuts!), Brenda’s pregnancy scare, Dylan deals with his crazy mom and Dad, David and Kelly’s mom hook-up! I’m way too excited for the summer season!

Thanks Aaron

June 25, 2006 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

Without Aaron Spelling, theTVaddict.com would not exist. My slight obsession with television began with Beverly Hills 90210. From 90210, I slowly got hooked on Melrose Place, which led to Models Inc, which led to…. well you get the idea.

Aaron Spelling, 83, passed away on Friday, after suffering a stroke on June 18. Throughout his illustrious career, Spelling was best known for producing sexy, glamourous and escapist entertainment. In fact, through the 60’s, he produced so many hits for ABC, the press dubbed it ‘Aaron’s Broadcasting Company.’

Sure his shows weren’t critically praised, in fact a Washington Post columnist once wrote, “There is good and there is bad Spelling, but there is never great Spelling, only degrees of terribleness.”

The truth is, when it came to Spelling, critical acclaim never mattered. His shows were pure escapism. In my ‘younger days’, I used to sit on the phone with a friend, watching 90210, discussing major ‘Oh My God’ moments only during commercials. Donna Martin Graduate, Kimberly taking off her wig, Tony being shot – lying in Dylan’s arms. With a Spelling show you never knew what would happen next. The only thing you could count on was major plot twists, beautiful people, fun locales, and entertaining stories. In his own words, Spelling put it best:

“We often have to make the choice between 150 critics and 150 million Americans out there, and I have always felt that my job was to please [the viewers]. To entertain them.”

Aaron, thanks for the entertainment. You’ll be sorely missed.

90210 Beginnings…

June 7, 2006 By theTVaddict 5 Comments

Was my favourite ZIP CODE really this boring 16 years ago? That’s pretty much what I’m asking myself as I skim through the first few episode EVER of BEVERLY HILLS 90210

If you’ve been an avid reader of theTVaddict.com (and who isn’t?), you’ll recall my excitement when TVTROPOLIS.ca announced that they’d be airing 90210 from the beginning (starting last Thursday June 2). Right away, I ensured that my PVR would record each and every episode.

Yet after five episodes, all I’m wondering is when does this show start to turn into the 90210 I remember and loved? So far the show has been way too preachy, almost 7th Heavenesque in it’s episodic lessons, morals and values. We’ve dealth with drunk driving, high school gossip, drunk surfing, pre-marital sex, and Brenda’s temptation with shoplifting. Thankfully Dylan’s finally made an appearance, so hopefully the action will pick up soon. I’m not sure how much longer I can continue learning valuable high school lessons!

For a great little article on ‘90210 – Where are they now?’ click this link to check visit the LA TIMES website. Apparently Ian Ziering’s career prospects aren’t too good!

Flashback: Beverly Hills 90210

June 1, 2006 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

I remember it like it was yetserday. There I was, eating lunch in the ‘quad, only to have a helicopter fly overhead inviting me to the big ‘back to school’ bash! Man I was excited. I couldn’t wait to take my corvette into the hills to spend my Friday evening unsupervised, at a fully catered party (complete with flood lights shining into the clear hollywood hill sky). I also couldn’t wait for the inevitable point in the night when everybody ends up jumping in the swimming pool fully clothed. Oh wait, that wasn’t my life, it was the first episode EVER of BEVERLY HILLS 90210.

Seriously, what a trip, watching the premiere episode of the FOX show that got me hooked on TV. The cheesy lines (Brenda proclaiming that she’s going to need a bigger allowance), the awful hairstyles (Yes, Brandon had a mullet) and a freshman David Silver looking like he was 12 years old. The episode was such a trip (down memory lane). It was so nice to see the old gang from West Bev. All that was missing was an appearance by ‘bad boy’ Dylan McKay (I’m pretty sure he shows up, side-burns and all, in episode 3).

Tomorrow is the continuation of the two hour premiere. Will Steve find out that David smashed his car up? Will Brandon get a hair cut? Will Brenda continue to pretend she’s in University to date a creepy older guy? and finally, will Tori Spelling get more then one line? Tune in tomorrow – same 90210 time, same 90210 channel!

90210 Premieres in Canada Tomorrow!

May 31, 2006 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

Tomorrow is the day! After at least 10 years off the air, the classic show that hooked me on TV premieres in Canada (Check out the video above for a bit of nostalgia!). So psyched to spent some time with my favourite gang from West Bev! Re-live the memories. Drunk Dylan living out of his hotel. Kelly’s mom snorting coke at the fashion show. Brandon & Brenda realizing they’re going to have to get better cars!. The classic sleepover with ‘Skeletons in the Closet’. And of course, the night Brenda and Dylan finally ‘go all the way’. Pretty much I’m so excited to watch Steve Sanders devolve from quasi high school student to a 40 year old with a receding hairline!

Best News Ever: TVTROPOLIS

May 28, 2006 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

Admittedly, this news will not be that exciting to my American readers but I just have to mention how thrilled I am that a new TV network is coming to Canada. Prime has been re-branded TVTROPOLIS. Why is this good news, well I’ll tell you. Canada finally gets to see re-runs of BEVERLY HILLS 90210. Starting June 1, BEVERLY HILLS 90210 will be airing every weekday at 3pm! I can’t tell you how many years I’ve been waiting for 90210 reruns to come to Canada (as it doesn’t look like the DVD’s are being released anytime soon!). Bring on Brenda & Dylan, Mr. & Mrs. Walsh, Color Me Bad, Donna Martin Graduate, Toni Marchette, Dylan’s Dad, and SO MUCH MORE!

Unlike it’s lame predecessor PRIME, TVTROPOLIS is actually airing great class shows such as Frasier, Grace Underr Fire, Newsradio, Seinfeld, Married With Children and more. You can check out their schedule by clicking here.
