Review: Netflix.ca

After years of being green with envy over our American friends ability to utter the phrase, “Dude, I’m totally going to catch up with that on Netflix,” Canada’s time has finally arrived. Netflix.ca is here. But is it worth the price of admission? We’ve spent the better part of the last month taking the service out for a test drive and come to the following conclusion.
What Works: In short, virtually everything. As advertised Netflix.ca allows users to “instantly watch unlimited movies and TV shows over the internet” for a ridiculously low price of $7.99 per month. What’s more, thanks to the services’ ridiculously easy to navigate website and clever (albeit not perfect) recommendation engine, you’ll never run out of entertainment options that you can watch quite literally anywhere and everywhere courtesy of the system’s compatibility with the PS3, Wii, xBox 260, iPad and iPhone. The latter of which plays surprisingly stellar after testing it both over Wi-Fi and 3G.
An Epic Netflix Fail!

As much as we’ve been absolutely loving the recent arrival of Netflix to Canada (Seriously, best $7.99 we’ve ever spent!) we do feel the need to point out that their self-proclaimed state-of-the-art recommendation engine could use a little bit of work. Just sayin’ ![]()

NBC to preview shows on Netflix
In what the TV addict believes is a brilliant promotional move, NBC has signed a deal with Netflix (the leading internet video rental store) to offer select shows from their fall line-up to Netflix Subscribers. NBC hopes to drum up early buzz for two shows: STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP and KIDNAPPED by offering them on DVD to Netflix Subscribers
According to NBC, subscribers will be able to watch the first episodes of each of the shows and sample trailers of NBC’s other new series set to air in the 2006/2007 broadcast season. The shows will be available beginning on August 5.
Yet another reason why theTVaddict wishes NetFlix would come to Canada! ![]()

Nostalgia in TV: romanticized settings over the last decade
We all love to stay entertained in our spare time, and watching TV is still one of the most popular ways of enjoying our leisure time. There is nothing quite like relaxing on the sofa after a busy day and catching a TV show to make yourself feel good. One of the best ways to do this is by watching shows that have a hint of nostalgia to them. This is fairly common in many programs – be it those that are set in the past or that simply use familiar locations for filming.
Many TV shows like this often end up romanticizing the settings they use, due to the way in which nostalgia works. But which settings over the last decade have become romanticized?
Casinos
Casinos have played a big part in popular culture for a while and this is certainly true when you think of TV shows from the last decade that feature them. A prime example of this is the hit show Sneaky Pete, which stars Giovanni Ribisi and first aired in 2015.
This show features some scenes set in a casino (such as the heist in season two) and presents a certain view of them, which could be regarded as romanticized. Of course, that is not to say that playing games portrayed on TV shows like this is not fun! If you do not fancy heading to a land-based venue, though, you can give these games a whirl at home instead. There are some great roulette sites about and a large selection of online casinos with other enjoyable games that you can try out from home.
Stately homes
Another setting that nostalgic TV shows have helped romanticize over the last decade or so is stately homes. 2020’s Bridgerton, for example, continues to wow viewers with its Regency-era locations and has many scenes that are filmed in stately home settings. If you like this show, watch out for the new season coming to Netflix Canada in March 2022.
2016’s The Crown is another good example of a TV show that presents a nostalgic, romantic view of life in stately homes and country houses. It is also one of the best period dramas to watch. While it might look pretty cool living in these houses as a member of the family, these places were not always so awesome for the staff who worked there, and could be places of real intrigue.
Inner cities
While there are many TV shows that portray the true grit and danger of inner-city life, some do have a habit of managing to romanticize this locale. A good example of this is the hit show Peaky Blinders, starring Irish actor Cillian Murphy.
This show features the inner-city slums of Birmingham in the UK during the early part of the 20th century and somehow gives them an almost glamorous, cool feel. While this is not intentional (the program makers pull no punches in how this setting is portrayed), it seems the magic of TV and the swagger of the main characters help to make these slums appear somehow less unpleasant than they were.
Nostalgia in TV can change our view on things
People love getting a suggestion of nostalgia in life because it reminds them of times gone by and usually evokes happy memories. This makes TV shows that have a hint of nostalgia or references to familiar locales in pop culture a hit. This can sometimes, though, see some settings being viewed with rose-tinted spectacles and given a romantic sheen that might not always depict their true story. Over the last decade in TV, this can be noticed in settings such as those discussed above.
February 2022 Premiere Dates: New and Returning Shows
BEL-AIR, a drama version of the old comedy series THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR is coming to Peacock in February 2022. You can also stream two new shows — SUSPICISON and SEVERANCE — on Apple TV+. on cable TV, THE WALKING DEAD is returning from hiatus and LAW & ORDER is returning with all new episodes on NBC.
