WGA Strike: It’s Over!

February 10, 2008 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

The following memo was sent out by WGA President Patric M. Verrone early this morning.

To Our Fellow Members,
We have a tentative deal.

It is an agreement that protects a future in which the Internet becomes the primary means of both content creation and delivery. It creates formulas for revenue-based residuals in new media, provides access to deals and financial data to help us evaluate and enforce those formulas, and establishes the principle that, “When they get paid, we get paid.”

Specific terms of the agreement are described in the summary on our website and will be further discussed at our Saturday membership meetings on both coasts. At those meetings we will also discuss how we will proceed regarding ratification of this agreement and lifting the restraining order that ends the strike.

Less than six months ago, the AMPTP wanted to enact profit-based residuals, defer all Internet compensation in favor of a study, forever eliminate “distributor’s gross” valuations, and enforce 39 pages of rollbacks to compensation, pension and health benefits, reacquisition, and separated rights. Today, thanks to three months of physical resolve, determination, and perseverance, we have a contract that includes WGA jurisdiction and separated rights in new media, residuals for Internet reuse, enforcement and auditing tools, expansion of fair market value and distributor’s gross language, improvements to other traditional elements of the MBA, and no rollbacks.

From the WGA President: Tentative Deal Reached (Hallelujah!)

February 9, 2008 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

To Our Fellow Members,

We have a tentative deal.

It is an agreement that protects a future in which the Internet becomes the primary means of both content creation and delivery. It creates formulas for revenue-based residuals in new media, provides access to deals and financial data to help us evaluate and enforce those formulas, and establishes the principle that, “When they get paid, we get paid.”

Specific terms of the agreement are described in the summary at the following link and will be further discussed at our Saturday membership meetings on both coasts. At those meetings we will also discuss how we will proceed regarding ratification of this agreement and lifting the restraining order that ends the strike. Details of the Los Angeles meeting can be found here.

Over these three difficult months, we shut down production of nearly all scripted content in TV and film and had a serious impact on the business of our employers in ways they did not expect and were hard pressed to deflect. Nevertheless, an ongoing struggle against seven, multinational media conglomerates, no matter how successful, is exhausting, taking an enormous personal toll on our members and countless others. As such, we believe that continuing to strike now will not bring sufficient gains to outweigh the potential risks and that the time has come to accept this contract and settle the strike.

Much has been achieved, and while this agreement is neither perfect nor perhaps all that we deserve for the countless hours of hard work and sacrifice, our strike has been a success. We activated, engaged, and involved the membership of our Guilds with a solidarity that has never before occurred. We developed a captains system and a communications structure that used the Internet to build bonds within our membership and beyond. We earned the backing of other unions and their members worldwide, the respect of elected leaders and politicians throughout the nation, and the overwhelming support of fans and the general public. Our thanks to all of them, and to the staffs at both Guilds who have worked so long and patiently to help us all.

There is much yet to be done and we intend to use all the techniques and relationships we’ve developed in this strike to make it happen. We must support our brothers and sisters in SAG who, as their contract expires in less than five months, will be facing many of the same challenges we have just endured. We must further pursue new relationships we have established in Washington and in state and local governments so that we can maintain leverage against the consolidated multinational conglomerates with whom we bargain. We must be vigilant in monitoring the deals that are made in new media so that in the years ahead we can enforce and expand our contract. We must fight to get decent working conditions and benefits for writers of reality TV, animation, and any other genre in which writers do not have a WGA contract.

Most important, however, is to continue to use the new collective power we have generated for our collective benefit. More than ever, now and beyond, we are all in this together.

Best,

Patric M. Verrone
President, WGAW

Michael Winship
President, WGAE

TV Addict Interview: Mira Sorvino Guest Stars on HOUSE

January 24, 2008 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

In anticipation of Super Bowl Sunday’s very special episode of HOUSE, the TV Addict recently took part in a conference call with guest star Mira Sorvino.

For almost an hour, the academy award winner was kind enough to answer questions about her much anticipated guest spot, what it’s like to work with the incredible Hugh Laurie and the odds of her appearing on her favorite reality TV show DANCING WITH THE STARS.

In the episode, you’re trapped in the South Pole and just have this room of stuff and you’re trying to cure yourself. Did it ever occur to you, “Oh, my God, I’m MacGyver.”?
Mira Sorvino: No, it did not. But it was pretty interesting how we sort of jerry-rigged various instruments to try and mimic the diagnostic capacity of a real hospital. The thing with the egg in the middle of the water was quite inventive.

When I read the description for this episode, I was put back in the mind of the South Pole doctor who had breast cancer in 1999 and had to perform her own biopsy and self-administer chemotherapy treatments. Is that a direct inspiration for this episode?
I don’t know. I’m pretty sure, because of the similarities, that the writers probably drew some inspiration from her. It certainly doesn’t directly follow her story line, but I think the concept of a person trapped in the South Pole with some medical experience, but no hospital to treat herself with, that’s pretty similar.

Did you follow that story with any interest back nearly a decade ago?
No, I was not aware of the story before, actually. Before I did the episode, I didn’t know that there had been such a tale, so it’s even more remarkable knowing it’s partially true.

TheTVaddict.com Interview: Taylor Kitsch

By: Amrie Cunningham [My Take on TV]

There is really nothing I enjoy more these days than curling up and watching episode after episode of Friday Night Lights. It’s a show that makes me laugh and makes me cry and makes me think about life in just about every hour that they’ve produced. I relate to the characters, I feel for the characters, and all because I gave the show a chance when it started last season.

As the second season of one of the greatest shows ever made starts this Friday, I want to share with you the wonderful, warm, incredible conversation I was lucky enough to have with one of my favorite people, Taylor Kitsch – everybody’s favorite bad boy, #33 Tim Riggins.

Hi how are you?
Taylor Kitsch: I’m great, I’m just leaving set actually.

I’m glad you could take time to chat for a bit.
Oh no worries!

First of all, so excited that you’re back for season 2
I think we all are. And it’s been fun. We’re in episode 9 now and we’re still having a riot out there.

I’m one of those people who has told ever single person I’ve ever known probably to watch this show.
You gotta work on the strangers, now, too, don’t forget.

Haha, yeah, walk up to people on the street, and hand them something with FNL on it.
Yeah, make them watch. That’s what it’s going to come down to sooner than later, I’m sure.

So you said you’re on episode 9. That’s pretty far in, that’s exciting.
Yeah, it’s pretty darn interesting storylines, too. They’re starting to all intertwine too, so that’s my favorite part of it.

UGLY BETTY BEAUTIFUL

October 20, 2006 By theTVaddict 8 Comments

It’s official. I’m in love with UGLY BETTY. Last night, this TV addict’s initial plan was to watch UGLY BETTY until THE OFFICE started at 8:30PM. Yet as it was inching closer to 8:30, I just couldn’t bring myself to change the channel. UGLY BETTY was too much fun. Between Amanda and Marc’s never-ending snide remarks (“She’s like the real-life snuffleupagus… only hairier.”), Betty’s father hiding that he may be an illegal alien and Justin skipping school to ‘intern’ at Mode (“It’s just like top model except that no ones crying”) the show was truly firing on all cylinders.

That’s not to say THE OFFICE wasn’t great in its own right. So let’s get right to the highlight — Jim and Pam. I think I stopped breathing while Jim and Pam talked on the phone during the episodes final few minutes. It was such a small and beautiful moment, yet so meaningful. You could tell how much they missed each-other and how great it was to hear each-other’s voices. Kudos to the writers for handling the relationship so brilliantly. At this rate, I would be completely fine with Jim and Pam being separated all season, ensuring the show never ‘jumps the shark.’

Sandwiched in between UGLY BETTY and THE OFFICE for me was a little show that you may have heard of called GREY’S ANATOMY. Did anyone else find themselves a little distracted while watching GREY’S ANATOMY last night? As much as I love the show, I couldn’t help but think about all the real-life headlines that have been swirling around the show recently. While I still enjoyed the episode, the speculation about what Isiah Washington did on set is definitely having an effect on how I view the character of Preston Burke. You can bet that Shonda Rhimes is not pleased that the real-life behind the scenes drama on set is overshadowing the fictional drama at Seattle Grace.

This Week on TV: Season Premiere Week!

September 17, 2006 By theTVaddict 8 Comments

On your mark… Get set… Go! That’s what I feel like this week for TV. Like I’m off to the races. I can already hear the music. Get ready folks, cause TV Premiere Week has officially arrived!

Sunday starts off the week with a 2-hour Extreme Makeover: Home Edition special (with guest team-leader Marlee Matlin) and an hour and a half season premiere of The Amazing Race. Yay! Also catch new episodes of NFL Football: Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys on NBC, The Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy and The War At Home on FOX, and Three Moons Over Milford, in which residents of Milford bare their souls to one another when the town priest gives up his profession. Also, don’t forget that the WB Network is coming to a close soon! Tonight, they are showing the pilot episodes of 2 cult classics: Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Dawson’s Creek. Don’t miss your chance to see Katie Holmes WITHOUT being under Tom Cruise’s spell! 😉 (Starting earlier in the afternoon are the pilots of Felicity and Angel as well! Wow! So much good tv in a row!)

SURVIVOR 13: Ethnic Diversity Edition

August 23, 2006 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

In all honesty, I stopped watching SURVIVOR after SURVIVOR: AFRICA (with the exception of the ALL-STARS edition). That said, I know a lot of readers LOVE the original reality mega-hit, so here’s some news. Direct from the PR department of CBS:

CBS today announced the 20 new castaways who will compete in SURVIVOR: COOK ISLANDS when the 13th installment of the Emmy Award-winning series premieres Thursday, Sept. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

SURVIVOR: COOK ISLANDS will feature the series’ most ethnically diverse cast to date. The castaways will initially be organized into four tribes divided along ethnic lines (African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic and White) before merging in a later episode.

In addition, throughout the series, at least one castaway each episode will be banished to a separate island (Exile Island) miles away from camp. While being separated from the tribe is not desirable, the castaways will learn that there is a hidden Immunity Idol somewhere on Exile Island. If found, this Immunity Idol could save an individual from being voted out at a future Tribal Council.

Looks like creator Mark Burnett is scraping the bottom of the barrel in a desperate attempt to generate buzz for the thirteenth season of SURVIVOR. While some may see this ‘division via ethnic lines’ as an interesting twist on a tired series, this TV addict sees it as more of a ratings ploy to gain some attention and media coverage. Honestly, after 12 seasons of SURVIVOR, mabye it’s time to take a rest for a season (or at least half a season). Is there really a need for two cycles of SURVIVOR every season? What’s next? SURVIVOR 14, with the cast divided by height? Wait, that won’t generate nearly enough media interest. How about SURVIVOR 14, the religious challenge. We’ll have the tribe divided into Christians, Jews, Muslims etc… Now there’s a reality show that will generate some serious controversy!

If you are still excited for SURVIVOR 14: ETHNIC DIVERSITY CHALLENGE, click over to the official CBS SURVIVOR site for the complete list of castaways.
