SUPERGIRL Star Discusses the Big Breakup and Its Aftermath

November 6, 2017 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Maggie Sawyer and Alex Danvers have broken up. The sad event took place on this week’s SUPERGIRL, but the build-up had been happening for several weeks. After Alex realized that she wanted children in her future — and Maggie didn’t — they both saw no way for them to go forward as a couple.

During a visit to the set of SUPERGIRL today in Vancouver, we spoke to Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers)  about the big breakup and what it means for Alex and the LGBT-focused story.

Learning About the Breakup. “I found out about it during the hiatus [before season 3 began],” Leigh said. “I had a conversation with Andrew [Kreisberg] and really broke down a lot of what was going to be happening in the season. And obviously that being a big part of it, there’s so much that needed to go into it to be done as delicately as Alex’s story coming out story was. You had to approach it with the same delicacy to sort of end this particular chapter in Alex’s life. It doesn’t mean that Alex isn’t still a lesbian. It doesn’t mean that Alex’s journey ends there. It means that this is a loss, but also a gain for herself and understanding who she is. And no relationship is ever going to be guaranteed. They’re a hell of a lot of hard work. And regardless, there’s ups and downs.”

The Reasons Behind the Breakup. As the show explained, it was the issue of children that really drove the women apart, even though they still desperately love one another. “[Maggie and Alex] did come to an impasse,” Leigh explained. “There are certain things that you’re either always going to want or you’re never going to want. In this case with kids, that’s a pretty big deal. It’s not getting a dog, it’s not getting a pet, it’s not fighting over what bird you want to have. This is a life-changing thing one way or another. When you have decisions like that, when you come across obstacles that are that big, you really have to choose what’s going to be best for you individually. Alex would never wish anything but the absolute best for Maggie and vice versa. That’s really where, I think, you kind of see what is most heartbreaking about the ending of their relationship is how much they love each other and how much they want the best for each other. It’s not like you have this screaming [match where] you’re throwing vases around the room. It’s like you really see that the intention there is to allow them to be their best selves no matter what. I feel like we did a really good job with that.”

The Cast Felt the Emotion. “It’s a heavy episode, Leigh said. “It is a breakup. And honestly, in a lot of ways, it felt like a genuine breakup. I love Floriana [Lima] to pieces. She’s amazing. What we were able to do together for the community — but also for our friendship and being able to establish such strong characters — I mean that goes beyond how many episodes we do together, you know what I mean? I’m incredibly grateful for that. So tonight’s episode, yeah, it was heavy. The great thing was Kevin Smith [the director] kind of approached she and I. Initially, when we had the table read, we actually separated all of our stuff from the rest of the [cast’s] table read. So [we] didn’t sit in that one. Kevin really liked to make sure that we [did] this really well, and so he took Flo and I aside, and we did the table read just with us and Andrew Kreisberg and Jessica Queller. We wanted to make sure that the words were right, that the intention was right and the heart behind [it all] was right. Either way, any way you roll the dice, it’s not going to be easy, and it’s something that everybody felt. Not only that, but Kevin also said he thought it would be really great – and I totally agreed – to do all of the scenes in one day. So it was a hell of a day. It really was. But I really feel like we can only do our best with what we’re handed, right?”

Coping With the Loss. How Alex deals with the breakup will be a significant part of her story going forward, at least for a little while. “Because of the significance of it, it’s not like you can sweep it under the rug, you know what I mean, and just try to be chipper and move on,” Leigh said. “At the same time, Alex has a very hard time of really dealing with things. So the episode that we see after tonight’s episode is when Kara and Alex go back to Midvale, and it’s a really, really cool flashback episode where you see the initial dynamic between Kara and Alex and how that was really difficult for them in the beginning and sort of what the catalyst was for the turn in their relationship. But with that, you kind of see Alex going back and really having to figure some stuff out. But that’s just the beginning of it. From there, I think in some ways we try to busy ourselves, and you sort of put things off a little bit. I think there was a fine line. I think there was a balance that we really had to establish in kind of saying, ‘OK, we don’t want to be Debbie Downers all the time. But at the same time, there’s a reality of that’s an incredibly significant relationship.’ I mean this is the first time Alex ever really said ‘I love you’ to anybody, let alone get engaged and have wedding talk and all that stuff. So you see her sort of like go forward and go back, and then go forward and go back. I think there’s a pretty good balance with that.”

The Sisters Bond Over Their Shared Heartbreak. Kara is still reeling from the loss of Mon-El when her sister ends her engagement. How will the Danvers girls bond over the loss of their relationships? “Ice cream, pizza and the couch scenes are my favorites,” Leigh said. “It is interesting because in the very first few episodes [of the season] when Kara’s really dealing with the loss of Mon-El, Alex has sort of been the one saying, ‘Hey, it’s been six months. We need to kind of help you move on a bit.’ So it’s interesting because of how the tables have turned in that way, but it’s not like now Kara is all happy and fine. They’re really kind of in the mud together. The great thing about the sister dynamic is that regardless of what circumstance they’re facing, they’re always going to be each other’s champion. They’re always going to be the one that’s like, “Hey, it is what it is. We’re going to walk through this together.” You really see that true dynamic. And that was a big part of what Andrew [Kreisberg] talked to me initially about before we started the season — [that] we really want to see that relationship come back as the heartbeat of the show. So you do get to see a lot of that really, really sweet scenes with Melissa [Benoist] that I’m just gratefully appreciative of.”

The Future of Sanvers. As for whether there’s any hope for Maggie and Alex in the future, Leigh said that “As of now, what we know is we got these five amazing episodes [this season], based on [Floriana’s] availability. I know that just sounds like words, but it really does just come down to that. If she can come back, I know we would all love to have that happen. So if she’s available, that would be fantastic. I don’t know what that would look like. I don’t know how that would [be] incorporated, but that’s not my job. My job is to do the best with what has been handed to me.”

“I’ve kind of been avoiding social media today,” Leigh admitted towards the end of our interview, “only because I’m still trying to figure out how to really answer this for a lot of fans that I know personally and that I’ve come across that might not totally understand it. Dnd I want to make sure that people know that regardless they’re loved and that they matter and that the story that they have to tell is just as important as the story we told on the show and that that continues for them as well. Nothing ends tonight. That’s the biggest thing that I’ve been so worried about — that I don’t want people to think that this is the end of something really, really significant and important. It is really just the beginning in a lot of ways. I hope people can really latch onto to that and hang onto that. Almost like Alex in this situation, you can’t ask people to sweep it under the rug because what we did, I feel – maybe I’m biased – but what we did, I feel was pretty groundbreaking, and to have such a strong relationship, I feel, portrayed as well as we did, I think we did a very great justice to that storyline and for the community. The hope, honestly, is just that people can see what it was and celebrate that just as much as I do and I know Flo does, and really be able to grow from here and just see what comes next for Alex. That’s my hope.”

OUTLANDER: Caitriona Balfe Teases Claire and Jamie’s Reunion

October 22, 2017 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

OUTLANDER finally reunited Claire and Jamie at the end of the last episode, but fans had to wait two weeks before seeing the outcome of that brief scene…which ended with Jamie fainting from shock. The big question, of course, is how that reunion will actually play out. After being separated for 20 years, will the former couple pick up right where they left off? Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser) shared her thoughts on Claire’s decision to reunite with Jamie and how they will react to seeing each other again (aside from the fainting, that is).

“I don’t think [Claire would have gone back in time] if she didn’t believe in her heart that if she still feels the same way, that [Jamie] will [too]. But I think she’s also someone who’s slightly pragmatic because I think she tries to prepare herself for the possibility that he has lived other lives, or maybe there’s somebody involved [with him]. But she’s giving up everything. One of the challenges for me this season was wrapping [my] head around ‘ok, how does someone make that decision [to leave your daughter] when they don’t know what the outcome is on the other side?'”

But I also think it’s that thing when you get to a certain point in your life and you’re being haunted by something, if you don’t try and find out — if you don’t try and do something — then you’re just going to live this shadow life for the rest of your time. But obviously Claire going to Jamie and making that decision…I’m sure that entire journey she played every single scenario over and over in her head. The beauty is that it’s nothing like she would have imagined. She takes a huge leap of faith, but I think she doesn’t have any other option at this point.”

As for how the reunion itself goes, Balfe said that “what we always talked about with the writers is that in your own lives if there’s somebody that you haven’t seen in a long time, sometimes you can end up putting those people on pedestals. For Jamie…he has no inclination that Claire is going to walk through the door. The man is completely blindsided. But the beauty of it is anyone who’s been in a long-distance relationship can understand — even on a micro level — if you haven’t seen somebody for a while, you see them again, and it’s like ‘ahhhh, I’m so excited to see you’. And then you’re thinking ‘I’m not quite sure how to act in your presence’. It takes some time to get used to each other again. And I think that that’s the way it is with this reunion.”

“They want to hold each other, but then they don’t even know how to talk to each other, how to touch each other. I think for both of them it’s not even just about each other. Neither of them have been intimate with anyone in a very long time. They’re almost like teenagers again. And it’s almost like that first time again. It’s complicated and awkward and kind of clumsy. But I think that makes it feel real and it’s really charming and I actually really liked the way that the writers decided to approach it in that way.”

As for what’s to come for the couple beyond their initial reunion, Starz hinted that “Jamie’s new business dealings jeopardize the couples’ hopes for a simple life together.” When asked about Jamie’s job, Balfe teased that “the repercussions of his activities — and also maybe Claire’s interference in his activities — causes them to have to leave Scotland yet again. And I think that that obviously then has a huge impact on the rest of their lives.”

OUTLANDER airs Sundays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Starz (U.S.) and at 9:00 p.m. on W Network (Canada).

WILL & GRACE Sneak Peek: Grace Encounters Leo Again

October 12, 2017 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

When WILL & GRACE returned for an all new season after being off the air for so long, the show established that Grace and Leo were now separated, having done away with the storyline of them reuniting and having a child. Instead, the two are on their way to a divorce, leaving Grace living at her old apartment with Will.

But there’s a bit of closure that’s needed between this couple, especially with the way in which the show essentially erased a major part of their old history. So in this week’s episode, Grace is surprised when her doctor’s office calls her soon-to-be-ex-husband, Leo, as her emergency contact (which also leads to a very familiar nurse). The pair will address their old relationship and impending divorce.

Meanwhile, Jack isn’t having much luck booking acting gigs, so she takes on a new job he never expected to like. And Karen ends up making friends with a 12-year-old girl in the Bronx who really seems to get her.

Don’t miss an all new episode of WILL & GRACE tonight (October 12) at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

OUTLANDER: Caitriona Balfe on Frank and Claire’s Relationship, Brianna and More

September 17, 2017 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Claire and Jamie have a long road to travel in season 3 of OUTLANDER before the pair are reunited. In the season 3 premiere we saw Claire and Frank move to America where Claire’s daughter with Jamie was soon born. But the happiness surrounding Brianna’s birth was burst when the nurse remarked on her bright red hair — a trait she inherited from her birth father, Jamie.

During a recent interview with actress Caitriona Balfe, she spoke about how Frank and Claire’s relationship would continue to unravel in the 20 years Claire remains separated from Jamie and how Brianna bonds with the man who isn’t her biological father.

Claire and Frank. We saw a lot of tension between the couple in the season 3 premiere of OUTLANDER, although Brianna’s arrival may ease that tension a little bit. Certainly, Balfe doesn’t want fans to think that there is no hope for at least civility and respect between Claire and Frank, even if just for Brianna’s sake. “Tobias [Menzies] and I really wanted to play with the fact that there had to be hope. That it would be very unbelievable and make both of them somewhat pathetic characters if there was no hope and they just sat in this marriage of misery for 20 years. I don’t think that either of them would do that. So I definitely think Brianna does bring [them together]. You know, we see it at the very end of the first episode — yes, there’s the elephant in the room with the red hair, but I do think that children are such a pure form of hope and life. And I think that you can’t help but be around that and not find some way to build something that may not be perfect, but that there is common respect and common love there.”

Brianna and Frank. One might forgive Frank for feeling a bit cold towards the little girl who isn’t really his, but Balfe actually says this is not the case this season: “I think it’s actually easier for Frank to forget about Jamie, because he’s never met him. For him, looking at Brianna, obviously there’s red hair but he doesn’t look at her face and see Jamie. Whereas every time Claire looks at Brianna it’s such a strong reminder of a man that she knew so well. But for Frank he has no context for that. What I love about Diana [Gabaldon]’s depiction of their family dynamic is that in many ways she flipped the script and Claire became…maybe not the primary breadwinner, but definitely the workaholic or the person who was more engaged in her career. And Frank became pretty much the primary caregiving in the house.”

“I also think that because Claire has a secret in not being able to tell Brianna about her real father, that there’s always this barrier or something there between them. But Frank doesn’t have that burden, so they’re able to form a much stronger bond in many ways. And that’s not to say that Claire doesn’t love Brianna, but I do think that in many ways Frank is able to replace the love that he had for Claire with the love that he has for Brianna. They almost have the better relationship than Claire and Brianna do.”

How Does Claire Deal With the Loss of Jamie? Claire may have Brianna and she may also reach a sort of peace with Frank, but her loss of Jamie will always cut her. “I looked at it very much that this is a widow in many ways. For her, Jamie has died at the Battle of Culloden. She has made not only a promise to him about how she will raise their daughter, but she’s made a promise to Frank to never bring it up again. [She promised] to put that whole side of her life and the whole experience to one side. For me, I think it ties in with Claire’s ability as a surgeon — you have to be able to compartmentalize things. I think she takes all of that and locks it away and I think she pays a huge price for that. Part of that price is her sort of intimacy with her daughter. And I think she becomes a much more reserved and rigid person and she loses some of her freedom and her honesty with herself in a weird way. And I think that you really see in these first few episodes, that she’s a shadow of her former self.”

OUTLANDER airs on on Sundays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Starz (U.S.) and at 9:00 p.m. on W Network (Canada).

THE 100 at Comic-Con: The Cast and Producers Tease Season 5

July 21, 2017 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

the 100

The main characters of THE 100 were separated in a major way at the end of season 4, with Octavia and Abby joining a large group of grounders in a bunker underground; Bellamy, Raven, Monty and Murphy heading up to the ark with some grounders; and Clarke remaining back on the ground, prepared to sacrifice herself so that her friends could get to space. But Clarke didn’t die and now she has a young girl, Maddie, that she is looking after. She’s also been out of communication with her mother and friends for over six years and, as we saw, there is a group of mysterious new people hovering in ships in the sky, coming down to the ground.

The cast, including Eliza Taylor (Clarke), Bob Morley (Bellamy), Marie Avgeropoulos (Octavia), Lindsey Morgan (Raven), Richard Harmon (Murphy), Chris Larkin (Monty), and executive producer Jason Rothenberg came to San Diego Comic Con to talk about season 5. In addition, we got a few extra tidbits from THE 100 press room, so read on for more about the upcoming season.

Reinventing the Show. We pick up six years and 7 days down the line when THE 100 returns for the fifth season. One of the coolest things about a time jump is that the writers can show this new chapter of the character’s lives and how they have changed, Rothenberg said. Major changes make sense given what everyone has been through but we will see that the characters are still the people we know and love, even if they’ve grown in some cases or devolved in others.

The New Guys. The arrival of the prisoners on those mysterious ships is the primary story for the season. They are definitely from Earth and in a time before the first apocalypse — which means they had been in cryo-sleep for 100 years. Now the planet has been destroyed twice and there is just a “Garden of Eden” that Clarke has been living in and there won’t be enough room for everyone, Rothenberg teased. The new group will also be led by a strong female character that we will meet.

Reunited, But Butting Heads. All three “crews” are very different when they return. One thing that will be fun and interesting is that the main group of characters used to work together well overall. But now they’re going to bump heads with each other even more thanks to their leadership styles. For example, Octavia has what Rothenberg says is “one of the coolest stories we’re going to tell”. She is “full-on” he hinted without saying more. Bellamy has become a leader on the ark in his own right. He has fulfilled Clarke’s request for him in the finale when she asked him to lead with his head and heart. He’ll be a more heroic and “holistic” Bellamy. Clarke, meanwhile, is going to remain a badass who is in charge, but now she has the dynamic of looking after a child. Her relationship with Maddie is very much a “mother-daughter” relationship and her priorities have changed. Her “crew” is now that child and what’s good for Maddie might not necessarily be good for someone else. It sounds like that’s going to cause a lot of conflict.

Mother Clarke. A lot has changed for Clarke in the six years that have passed, according to Taylor. Despite having gone through a lot while originally on the ark, she went from a kid dropped on Earth in the series premiere of THE 100 to becoming more mature as the years have passed. She’s now a 24 year old woman on the show and Taylor is looking forward to playing a more “maternal and simplified” character. Clarke’s only real responsibility is now to this young girl, Maddie. And while Clarke will still always be in survival mode, there is more care and softness she’ll be displaying towards Maddie.

From Sky Person to Grounder. Things have flipped for Clarke with the arrival of these new people from the sky. In essence, Clarke is “the grounder now”, according to Taylor. When the 100 kids first arrived from the sky the grounders originally reacted out of fear and tried to defend themselves. Now Clarke is reacting much in the same way, which may lead her to “react violently” out of sheer fear from the newcomers. Rothenberg said that Bellamy will help Clarke see that they have to do things differently now from when they were coming down from the sky because all Clarke wants to do is protect her home.

Did Murphy Grow? Life on the ark has been more about the day-to-day living for the characters as opposed to a never-ending fight for their lives. That’s not necessarily Murphy’s style, unfortunately, which means we might see more of a “regression” for him, according to Harmon. But expect to see/learn more about what happened on the ship. Harmon teased that in the premiere there’s a lot of experiences that are alluded to even if the writers don’t outwardly reveal everything that happened. It’s likely going to take a while for us to fully learn what happened to everyone, but it sounds like it’s coming — whether through flashbacks or through the characters themselves discussing it. Rothenberg also hinted at flashbacks, saying “we will come to understand how all of them became the characters we will see in the premiere”.

Raven’s Guilt. We’re going to see that Raven has struggled a lot with guilt in the six years that have passed. She and her friends managed to make it to the ark solely because Clarke sacrificed herself (at least that’s what her friends believe). And everyone came back to save Raven, which eventually led to Clarke’s death. Raven has spent many years trying to repay Clarke for the sacrifice she believes she made for her.

New Dynamics in the Ark. Morgan is most excited for Raven to develop relationships with both Echo and Emori. After all, Raven never really had much interaction with grounders because she was always preoccupied with “space stuff”. But allowing Raven to develop a friendship with two women from a very different world than she came from will be interesting.

Sheriff Octavia. In season 5 you’ll see what Octavia’s plan is to keep the peace and how she reprimands others “in her special way” for people who try to step out of line.

Echo’s New Role. The actress who plays Echo (Tasya Teles) will be a series regular in season 5), which means we’ll see a lot more of the character.

Other Tidbits. We’re going to see an interesting new dynamic develop between Murphy and Raven, according to Rothenberg. Rothenberg also wouldn’t hint at the state of relationships for the people who made it to the ark. He just said that some people “break up” but can also “get back together”.

THE 100 will return midseason on The CW.

ZOO Season 3 Sneak Peek: It’s a Brave New World 10 Years Later

June 29, 2017 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

zoo

ZOO’s second season ended with a time jump, but before we went ten years into the future Mitch, Jamie, Logan, Dariela, Abe, Clementine and Jackson enacted a daring plan to cure the animals from their murderous tendencies. Unknowingly, however, they also sterilized the entire human population and Mitch was killed in the process.

Now it’s 2027 and humanity has reached a tipping point: the human population is dwindling as a result of babies no longer being born and “the hybrids” (an army of unstopping lab-made creatures) are working on destroying the remaining humans. While the team has separated over the last decade, they are forced to come together again when they learn that Mitch might actually be alive. CBS teases that “as the planet’s future hangs in the balance, the team must race to stop the hybrids and their creator – a shadowy figure with a startling connection to the team’s past.”

Here is where everyone is when the show returns for season 3:

  • Jackson: Protecting people in the hybrid zones.
  • Mitch: His daughter, Clementine, reunites the team to search for her father who she believes is still alive and may hold the secret to stopping the hybrids.
  • Abraham: Trying to solve the human reproductive crisis.
  • Dariela: Her son with Abraham, Isaac Kenyatta, is one of the last remaining children on the planet.
  • Jamie: A successful author searching for Mitch and hunting down Shepherds, the people responsible for sterilizing humanity.
  • Logan: As an NYPD detective, he’s investigating hybrid attacks across the country.

Don’t miss the return of ZOO tonight (June 29) at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS (U.S.) and CTV (Canada).

THE 100 Sneak Peek: No Turning Back Now

May 10, 2017 By Araceli Leave a Comment

Last week’s episode of THE 100 was the end of the road for many of our favorite new characters. Ilian, Roan, Luna and nine other warriors died in the conclave, leaving Octavia the victor and Skaikru the rightful owners of the Second Dawn bunker to ride out the coming nuclear apocalypse. Yet in a surprising move, at the last minute Octavia decided to open up the bunker to everyone, proclaiming, “I was fighting for us all!” Too bad Clarke and Jaha had already secretly taken the bunker for themselves and locked their people inside.

Tonight Clarke will face the consequences of her fateful choice. In this week’s episode, written by Shawna Benson and Julie Benson and directed by star Henry Ian Cusick (Kane), the radiation levels on the ground are becoming critical. Trapped inside the bunker, Bellamy is desperate to find out what happened to his sister. However, if they open the door, the people outside will stop at nothing to get in. Clarke must make a choice on whether to stop her strongest ally.

Still Bellamy isn’t the only person separated from someone they love. In a new clip from the episode, we see Clarke’s mom Abby isn’t happy to be locked inside while Kane is above ground. She isn’t willing to let Jaha tell her what to do like he used to do on the Ark. It’s a very different life down on Earth.

Open up and they all die. Or survive with the knowledge their loved ones died in their place. Watch some sneak peeks from the new episode below. THE 100 airs tonight (May 10) at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
