We’ve seen the Winchester brothers slowly learn more about the Men of Letters (a historical organization they belong to thanks to their paternal grandfather) on SUPERNATURAL. In an early April episode of the show the history of the Men of Letters might provide a clue to help them open up the portal to the other dimension. The brothers are still searching for a way to open up a portal and save Mary and Jack in an upcoming episode. Their latest quest to collect a vital ingredient is going to lead them to a Men of Letters bunker from the 1920s and, according to the CW “a hungry God from another dimension”. Yikes!

Meanwhile, Ketch will also return in this episode, as will Gabriel. Ketch will be making a “shocking decisions about Gabriel” after he has a very unruly encounter with Asmodeus. Will Ketch turn his back on Asmodeus and free Gabriel? We’ll have to wait and see!

SUPERNATURAL: Jared Padalecki & Jensen Ackles Talk “ScoobyNatural”

March 27, 2018 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

SUPERNATURAL has never shied away from meta episodes. Back in the earlier seasons Sam and Dean first met Chuck, an author who wrote a very meta book series about their lives (and was later revealed to be God himself). The brothers have also entered various television shows thanks to the Trickster (a.k.a. the archangel Gabriel) and were also transported into a world where they learned about their own real alter-egos (Padalecki and Ackles) who played Sam and Dean on a TV show. The show has also been animated once before, in the season 8 episode “Hunteri Heroici”, when Sam and Castiel entered an animated world briefly (although they remained real).

But SUPERNATURAL has never really done meta in the way they’ll do it this week with “ScoobyNatural” — a blend of episodes like “Changing Channels” and “Hunteri Herorici”. This time the Winchester brothers will be sucked into a real television show — specifically, into SCOOBY DOO. Growing up on the road as the brothers did, SCOOBY DOO was something of a cornerstone for Dean in particular and SUPERNATURAL has alluded to Dean’s love of the show before. But this time he’s utterly thrilled to get an opportunity to meet the Scooby Gang and solve a mystery with them. While Sam isn’t as enamoured with the possibility of dealing with this group of people who don’t at all believe in the supernatural, Dean convinces his brother that they have to play along with the game in order to get back to their own world. Later, Castiel gets sucked into the animated world as well and makes friends with Scooby and Shaggy in particular.

Thanks to PaleyFest and Executive Producer Andrew Dabb, we know that the idea for this episode came from Dabb’s friend, Jeremy Adams, who works in Warner Bros. Animation. While the SUPERNATURAL Writers played around with the idea of doing an animated episode even under the show’s creator Eric Kripke (who departed as showrunner at the end of season 5), the idea never really came to fruition until late 2016, when to Adams asked Dabb if he would consider the crossover. After SUPERNATURAL received an early season 13 pick-up, the script for “ScoobyNatural” was written and the majority of the voiceover work was done in April 2017.

Back in the fall, we visited the set of SUPERNATURAL, where Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles talked about SUPERNATURAL becoming part of the SCOOBY DOO mythology (and vice versa).

“I grew up watching SCBOOY DOO and I remember when the SCBOOY DOO movies came out, and they wanted me to try out for Shaggy,” Padalecki said. “I was young, and [Matthew] Lillard’s great — I fought not to do it. I don’t want to…. I’m a big James Bond fan, not that I could ever be James Bond. Someone’s like ‘would you try out?’ No, I wouldn’t, cause I wanna watch that as something I enjoy.”

But Padalecki got over his hesitation to be part of something he loves, saying “I’m really excited for Scooby Doo to be part of the SUPERNATURAL lore, but I’m more excited for the SUPERNATURAL lore to be a part of the SCBOOY DOO canon. That’s cool for me, you know what I mean? That now there’s a footnote about SUPERNATURAL when people are talking about SCBOOY DOO.”

“You don’t want to mess it up. You want to do it justice,” Ackles said, before laughing about how Dean makes sure to hit on Daphne in the episode (a crush that goes all the way back to season 2 of the show).

Watch our interview with Padalecki and Ackles below, as well as a behind the scenes featurette for the episode. Don’t miss the “ScoobyNatural” episode of SUPERNATURAL on March 29at 8:00 p.m. on The CW.

SUPERNATURAL & SCOOBY DOO Extended Preview: The Winchesters Solve a Different Kind of Mystery

March 22, 2018 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

SUPERNATURAL is getting animated in an upcoming episode that features Sam and Dean Winchester actually crossing over into the world of SCOOBY DOO, all thanks to a mysterious television the brothers receive as thanks for helping someone in their world. Dean decides to build himself a mancave and when he first fires up the new television, he and Sam get transported into an animated world.

Related: See photos from the “ScoobyNatural” episode

But this is a very special animated world — the world of SCOOBY DOO — and it just so happens to be one of Dean’s favorite childhood shows. Following the same formula they used back in the season 5 episode “Changing Channels”, the brothers realize they have to play their parts in this world in order to eventually get out.

This is what causes them to pair up with the Scooby gang to solve a mystery. But things turn dark pretty quickly. While Dean thinks they’re going to just have to deal with shady real estate developers, someone actually dies in the mansion the group is visiting and a ghost shows up to haunt them. Will the Winchesters manage to save the Scooby gang from a crossover with supernatural entities? And will Dean ever manage to kiss Daphne?

Tune in to the March 29 episode of SUPERNATURAL on The CW to find out!

SUPERNATURAL at PaleyFest: The Apocalypse World, Season 13 and The Future of the Show

March 20, 2018 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

The SUPERNATURAL cast and producers made their third ever appearance at PaleyFest this evening and fans were treated to an advance screening of the upcoming SUPERNATURAL/SCOOBY DOO crossover episode “Scoobynatural”. After the screening, the cast and producers took to the stage to talk about the show and provided a few spoilers for the rest of the season.

Apocalypse World. The alternate universe that first appeared at the end of season 12 was first pitched by producers/writers Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Lemming. This gave them the opportunity to put “our characters” in a world that wasn’t at all familiar to us. “We were playing with the idea of our hunters being the hunted,” Eugenie said. As for the alternate universe character versions we’ve seen, Dabb said “they’re still the same people, but they haven’t been through the same circumstances. You want to treat them with the respect you would show the same [characters we know].” The world where Mary and Jack are now trapped isn’t the only alternate dimension and we’ve seen at least one more world (The Bad Place). That being said, Dabb doesn’t think they’ll necessarily be going to new alternate dimensions every week, but they don’t rule out the chance of going to another place if the story takes them there.

The Winchesters. Jared Padalecki thinks that “Sam is fine” right now, but we’ll see Sam go to the “nth degree to give it all he’s got to try and make the world a better place this season.” As for Dean, Jensen Ackles said that the show has an “ever-evolving motivation between the [brothers].” Dean had a lot of loss at the beginning of the season, but he’s “not going it alone and he has his brother to help pick him up when he’s down”. Dean has started to get his confidence back and as we get “close to the end of the season here, we’ll see Dean step up in a big way.”

The Future of SUPERNATURAL. As for season 14, Robert Singer hinted that the Empty might be a place they re-visit “next year”, hinting that the show is looking to the future. The network hasn’t announced a renewal yet, but it’s likely SUPERNATURAL will return.

SUPERNATURAL returns with an all new episode on March 29 on The CW (see photos from “Scoobynatural”).

The Winchester brothers are getting animated in a late March episode of SUPERNATURAL. This technically isn’t the first time one of the brothers heads into an animated world (that happened in the episode “Hunteri Heroici”) and it’s not the first time they’ve ended up in a television show (that was season 5’s “Changing Channels”). But this will be the first time we see the animated versions of Sam and Dean, who will end up in the world of SCOOBY DOO.

When Dean decides to take the offer of a free TV as a thank-you for helping out on a case, he brings it back to the Men of Letters bunker and decides to build himself and Sam a little man-cave. Unfortunately, turning on the television immediately gets the brothers sucked into the world of SCOOBY DOO. Having had experience with this kind of thing before, they decide to see where the case leads them and they join the Scooby gang to investigate (with a little bit of Dean flirting with Daphne on the side). How will the brothers make it out of the animated world at the end of the case? You’ll just have to wait and see!
