Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Fan-Made Credit Sequences That Are Way Better Than The Ones Used By The Show

June 24, 2010 By theTVaddict 9 Comments

This morning, our friends over at For Starters — a site devoted to TV’s credit sequences — posted a fan-made GOSSIP GIRL opening so good we were blown away. More importantly, we were inspired to shine the light on some openings made by fans that not only blow the real ones away, but prove that there are a whole lotta people out there who — like us — love a good intro.

GOSSIP GIRL
While there’s no denying that that the words “You know you love me, XOXO” have become this show’s signature, this fan-made opening does a far better job of welcoming you to the world of Manhattan’s elite. Plus, bonus points for the Blake Lively hair-flip. Every truly-classic opening needs at least one amazing hair-flip. (This is, in fact, a little known law, known in many circles as SSFC, as it was named after Susan Sullivan’s toss-your-hair-as-you-whip-around-to-face-the-camera moment in the FALCON CREST credits.)

Channel Surfing with CT: Y&R, SCOUNDRELS, THE GATES & More!

June 21, 2010 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

Is anybody else surprised by the quality of shows being tossed out by the networks this summer? Last night, ABC offered up not one but two fantastic little warm-weather treats that would be considered great viewing even during the normal season. First up was SCOUNDRELS and, to be honest, I wasn’t intending to watch. But with an hour to kill before THE GATES, which I’d been looking forward to for some time, I figured, “Why not?” Well, forgive me, West clan, because your exploits made this a criminally entertaining hour of television. Featuring an entire cast of “Oh-my-God-I-loved-him/her-in-fill-in-the-blank” actors and a script that zipped along at a breakneck pace, SCOUNDRELS has moved to the front of my summer hit list. Standouts? Leven Rambin, whom soap fans labeled a star-to-watch during her stint as ALL MY CHILDREN’s Lily; David James Elliott, who has gone from pretty boy to rugged since first we swooned over him back on the original MELROSE PLACE; and Patrick John Flueger — whom most remember from THE 4400, but I’ll never forget for his star-making turn as an accidental commiter of incest on LAW & ORDER: SVU — as twins Cal and Logan. While I’m not sure why this was relegated to summer, when viewers traditionally eschew new programming, here’s hoping that ABC’s efforts to bring us shows worth actually watching pays off.

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Reboots That Could Be Monster Hits

June 11, 2010 By theTVaddict 9 Comments

We’re not big believers in remaking TV shows, but since TV execs seem determined to do it, we thought we’d offer up some suggestions. And since THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, SUPERNATURAL and TRUE BLOOD have the audience thirsting for blood, why not focus on a few short-lived creature features we think might be a hit the second time around!

HIGHCLIFFE MANOR
This sitcom originally aired in 1979 and starred Shelly Fabres as Helen Straight Blacke, whose creepy manor was overrun by a variety of weird scientists and supernatural occupants. Think SOAP meets DARK SHADOWS. Speaking of which…

DARK SHADOWS
ABC’s gothic daytime sudser went from snoozefest to sleeper hit after introducing self-actualized vampire Barnabas Collins a year into its run. In 1991, NBC launched a lavish primetime version (with Ben Cross as the brooding neck nibbler), but the pre-Twilight timing may have doomed the project from the start. In 2004, the WB filmed a younger-skewing remake which never hit the airwaves. With VAMPIRE DIARIES a big hit for The CW, maybe it’s time for them to revisit this seeminly-perfect companion piece.

The CW to Emmy Voters: We Exist!

June 9, 2010 By theTVaddict 19 Comments

By: Vlada Gelman

I’d like to thank my mom for always believing in and my manager and the entire cast and crew, who work tirelessly, and the CW…

Yeah, you’re probably not going to hear that at the Primetime Emmy Awards this year, but that hasn’t stopped the CW from mounting its first ever Emmy campaign. Earlier this week, Deadline Hollywood Daily posted about the network’s OMFG FYC campaign, which consists of an insert in the new issue of Emmy magazine (more photos of which can be found here). Although the OMFG slogan is associated with GOSSIP GIRL — they considered the slogan, “Beautiful people deserve Emmys too,” according to DHD –  the insert also features THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, ONE TREE HILL, SMALLVILLE and SUPERNATURAL. All the featured shows are produced by campaign brainchild Warner Bros. TV, which explains the absence of the CBS Television Studios’ 90210 and LIFE UNEXPECTED, the latter of which I think is more worthy than some of the WBTV shows.

The CW Gets its End of Season Report Card

June 1, 2010 By theTVaddict 7 Comments

Good Moves: After countless seasons that culminated with the inexplicable cancelation of some of our favorite shows (R.I.P: PRIVILEGED and JACK & BOBBY), the CW network finally threw fans of quality television a bone by renewing the critically adored LIFE UNEXPECTED for a second season. Not so unexpected was the audiences seemingly insatiable appetite for all things Vampire, resulting in the fledgling network’s first bonafide breakout hit in THE VAMPIRE DIARIES (Note: By CW standards, “bonafide breakout hit” translates to about 4 million viewers). Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the rest of the CW’s new offerings, which brings us to the…

Bad Moves: There was very little to ‘talk, text and tweet” about with regards to the Ashton Kutcher produced BEAUTIFUL LIFE, which after a splashy ad campaign, quickly fizzed. Also falling into the category of ‘bad,’ was the the way in which the CW’s target demo summarily rejected the guilty pleasure that was the now defunct MELROSE PLACE reboot. And from bad to ugly, lest we forget the budget-conscious network’s biggest blunder: Scheduling. Seriously. Just how any Network can expect to build audience awareness after benching shows for weeks on end in lieu of repeats of AMERICA’s NEXT TOP MODEL we’ll never understand.

NIKITA: Right Show, Wrong Network?

May 26, 2010 By theTVaddict 17 Comments

Is the CW making a mistake of MELROSIAN proportions? That’s the question we find ourselves pondering since last week’s announcement that had the perennial fifth place network unveil NIKITA (a reboot of the 90’s action-thriller LA FEMME NIKITA) as the centerpiece of their Fall 2010 Schedule.

Now, don’t get us wrong. On a personal level, we can’t wait to watch Hong Kong superstar Maggie Q (Mission Impossible III, Live Free or Die Hard) kick some serious bad guy butt, not to mention look forward to welcoming her supporting cast of small screen favorites such as ER’s Shane West and THE OC’s Melinda Clarke back into our living room on a weekly basis. That said, it’s hard to ignore the CW’s not so stellar track record when it comes to tapping into cash cows that were once iconic 90’s series.
