Exclusive: Amy Acker on Friday’s DOLLHOUSE Shocker

Friendship with Joss Whedon has its privileges. Just ask actress Amy Acker who is as surprised as anyone to have played such an integral role in what’s shaping up to be a pretty epic final season of DOLLHOUSE.
“The day before they started shooting the pilot, Joss [Whedon] called me up and said ‘We’ve got this part, she was supposed to be this 55 year old woman, but I’m thinking that you should do it’,” revealed Acker at yesterday’s Television Critics Associaiton Press Tour in Pasadena while promoting her upcoming ABC small town thriller HAPPY TOWN. “I didn’t know if I was just going to be in the pilot and of course I had no idea I would end up as a Doll and all this stuff would unfold.”

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Big Small Screen Predictions for 2010

Jay Leno will get downsized.
NO, unfortunately we are not calling for the end of the unmitigated disaster that is THE JAY LENO SHOW. Well, at least not yet. Rather, we predict that after successfully taking the pressure off NBC for the 2009/10 development season, the band-aid that is Jay Leno’s 10PM talk show will slowly begin to be peeled off. Allowing for the Peacock Network to commence the long and arduous process of reclaiming their dignity starting with Thursday nights at 10PM, which will return to the realm of scripted fare in Fall 2010.
Simon Cowell will remain on American IDOL.
Much to the chagrin of competing networks, Simon Cowell will not be throwing in his trademark V-neck T-shirt. Forget the rumours, reports and speculation, because the facts are these: There is absolutely no way FOX is going to allow their golden goose to simply fly the coop. Seriously. Whether it requires Rupert Murdoch to personally back up the proverbial Brinks Truck and in the process make Cowell the highest paid personality in television history, or completely tailor IDOL’s schedule to allow him the time he needs to properly import his UK hit THE X FACTOR to America, you can take this to the bank; Cowell will be back.
Our 2009 TV Year in Review (Part III)
Best In Joke: Everybody knows a long-running show is in trouble when they give established characters a baby or long-lost sibling. So when SUPERNATURAL gave the Winchester boys a bro, the scribes titled the episode “Jump The Shark.”
Most Over-hyped Reality Contestant: The folks at SURVIVOR tried convincing us that Russell was the kind of guy who ate live kittens. Instead, he was all bark and no bite, more imp than demon.
Most Misleading Ad Campaign: Before its debut, commercials for THE GOOD WIFE had us anticipating a juicy political potboiler. What we got instead was a stale courtroom drama. Great performances on behalf of the cast, but not the bill of goods we were sold.
Lamest Kiss: Given the pre-buss buzz, we expected the same-sex liplock between GOSSIP GIRL’s Chuck and Josh to rock our worlds. Instead, it was about as passionate as a grandma’s kiss on the cheek. (Although we did enjoy Chuck saying to Blair, “Do you really think I’ve never kissed a guy before?”)
Best Single Episode: BIG LOVE’s road-trip centric episode, “Come, Ye Saints” gave every member of the Hendrickson clan a major moment as Bill and Nikki’s individual pill-popping secrets came out, Margene got an unwelcome admirer and we all realized why family vacations aren’t what they’re cracked up to be.
The CW Gets its Mid-Season Report Card
The Good: Finally giving its audience something to talk, tweet and text about, the CW successfully bit into the Vampire craze with THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, resulting in their first bonafide breakout hit since the creation of the network. Meanwhile, after a slow start to the season, loyal fans of the Red-Blue Blur finally seemed to have discovered where SMALLVILLE landed on the schedule (Hint: Friday). While Rebecca Sinclair, a super-hero of an entirely different nature proved that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword by turning the train-wreck that was 90210’s freshman season into a flirty, fun and increasingly addictive night time sudser.
The Bad: Aside from the unmitigated disaster that is MELROSE PLACE’s first season, the fact of the matter is that the CW simply backed the wrong horse demographic. While studies indicate that the network’s audience (particular teenagers) are watching TV in record numbers, they [unfortunately for the network’s bean counters] aren’t doing so live (Shows such as SMALLVILLE, TOP MODEL, GOSSIP GIRL and 90210 frequently add 1 million plus viewers when DVR playback is factored in). Which means that until advertisers start to see the value in online and DVR viewership — or Nielsen gets their act together and starts measuring viewers properly — the CW will continue to be a virtual non-factor in the ratings game.
