First Look: Young Sam and Dean Winchester

January 14, 2009 By theTVaddict 25 Comments

young sam dean winchester

On the January 29th episode of SUPERNATURAL titled “After School Special,” Sam and Dean go undercover to investigate a haunting at one of the high schools they attended as a teenager which sparks a flashback, causing them to recall how a young Sam (Colin Ford) was picked on by the school bully while Dean was Mr. Popular (Brock Kelly). Which if you ask us, sounds like the exact plot (minus all those gruesome demons) of one of our all-time favorite WB shows, JACK & BOBBY. Too bad Sam and Dean Winchester can’t bring that brilliant-but-cancelled favorite back from the dead.

CouchTater’s Top 10 Shows of 2008

December 30, 2008 By theTVaddict 9 Comments

top 10 shows of 2008

Putting together my annual list of top 10 shows is never easy. Some years, it’s because there are just too darn many choices. Others, too few. So how did 2008 fare? Let’s just say that THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA made the list and leave it at that.

The problem isn’t necessarily that the season was necessarily bad so much as it was mediocre. Shows that have been fantastic in the past were average at best (GREY’S ANATOMY, UGLY BETTY) and nearly unwatchable at worst (HEROES). So this year, I’m going with the 10 shows that gave me the most bang for my buck. In some cases, they might not have been MENSA worthy, but they brought me a whole lot of pleasure. So while you won’t find MAD MEN on my list, it’s mainly because I haven’t seen it yet. (No, not even season one. Hey, I’m only now starting to watch BIG LOVE!) Without further ado — and while fully aware of the slings and arrows sure to be launched my way by the peanut gallery — I present to you, in no particular order, CT’s Top 10 Shows of 2008.

THE BIG BANG THEORY
Newsflash, folks: Comedy isn’t dead. And if it were, these guys would probably be able to reanimate it in their lab. Yes, everyone and their mother is heaping praise on Jim Parsons for his role as Sheldon, but take him out of the equation and this cast would still keep me coming back for more. In fact, they might wanna be careful not to become too Sheldon-centric. My hope? That in the coming year, we’ll see a whole lot more of supporting players Howard and Rajesh.

TRUE BLOOD
I was tempted to lump this show and DEXTER together if only because they only give us 12 episodes a season. But each deserves separate recognition because of what they do best. With TRUE BLOOD, it’s a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. I’m not a particularly huge fan of the show’s supposed root-for couple, Sookie and Bill. But the secondary characters — especially Rutina Wesley’s heartbreaking Tara and Ryan Kwanten’s comically self-destructive Jason — are the true lifeblood of this seductive series.

DEXTER
Although this series is, in essence, a one-man show, the writers have done an amazing job of fleshing out the people in our anti-hero’s life. This season, Dexter’s efforts to achieve normalcy in both his relationship with Rita and his ill-fated-from-the-start “friendship” with Miguel allowed us to see not only much-needed growth on the part of our favorite serial killer, but also, in an ironic and tragic twist, just how difficult it will be for him to expand his universe.

We Give the CW its Mid-Season Report Card

December 17, 2008 By theTVaddict 5 Comments

THE GOOD: Three hardworking remnants from the beloved WB era (SMALLVILLE, SUPERNATURAL and ONE TREE HILL) proved you don’t need silly things like an actual marketing budget to be successful. While the gang from GOSSIP GIRL finally started to convert all of their highly-publicized off-screen buzz into on-screen ratings.

THE BAD: Sadly, the same can’t be said for the CW’s re-boot of 90210, which was plagued with a trifecta of troubles including uninspired story-telling, disappointing rating and their very own Canadian-diva-in-training (We’re so proud!). Also falling under the umbrella of bad news was the network’s failed attempt to translate some of Tyra’s TOP MODEL magic to their newest franchise hopeful STYLISTA and the entire Sunday Night experiment with M.R.C. (Media Rights Capital); which was quickly cancelled after the CW discovered that viewers were M.I.A.

THE FUTURE: Aside from REAPER returning on March 17 in the plum post-90210 timeslot, we’ve got nothing. Fruthermore, we have yet to meet a soul who is looking forward to, let alone heard of the network’s January reality TV/horror offering 13 FEAR IS REAL. And we’re still waiting for the network to show us they’ve got it in them to develop an entirely original new series that isn’t based on a re-boot of an already popular franchise (MELROSE PLACE), a spin-off (GOSSIP GIRL) or a series of popular teen-centric books.

THE GRADE: C+

5 Ways to Guarantee Job Security in Hollywood

December 4, 2008 By theTVaddict 7 Comments

supernatural winchester brothers

In Michael Ausiello’s latest blind item, he teased that, “If a certain TV star is reading this, they should squint extra hard to read between the lines. How come? They’ve been canned — they just don’t know it yet!”

Now aside from the fact that Ausiello’s blind items are the Hollywood equivalent of cruel and unusual punishment, what with leaving us dying to know what he does, we can’t help thinking that given the sad state of the economy, this isn’t the most ideal time to be an out-of-work actor. (Unless, of course, you’re willing to demean yourself on a reality show in which case the world could, temporarily, be your oyster!)

Which is why, as a public service to those in the industry who are working — and want to ensure that they continue to do so — this TV Addict thought he’d take a moment to offer up a few helpful hints which should prevent you from winding up in the same position as  GREY’S ANATOMY’s T.R. Knight…err… we mean whoever Ausiello’s blind item is referring to!

What Are You Thankful For: TV Edition

November 26, 2008 By theTVaddict 19 Comments

With Thanksgiving a mere day away, we at theTVaddict.com thought now would be the perfect time to give our readers the opportunity to post the obligatory “What You’re Thankful For…”

But remember. The key here is that this is theTVaddict.com, not theFEELGOODSAPPYTHANKGIVINGaddict.com. So we don’t want to hear that any of you are thankful for your loving family, great friends, peace on earth yadda, yadda, yadda!

What we want to know is what you’re really thankful for! You know, important stuff like your new 42″ Panasonic Viera HDTV (also known as, what this TV Addict is thankful for!). Or the fact that the current economic crisis finally brought with it the low prices so that you could actually afford your new 42″ HDTV!

Other TV Addict ‘approved’ things to be thankful for include the January return of LOST, NIP/TUCK, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and DAMAGES, record ratings for SMALLVILLE & SUPERNATURAL, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, your PVR/DVR/TiVo, a full season pick-up for CHUCK and/or the overall general awesomeness that is Neil Patrick Harris.

Now that you’ve got the idea, post away and be sure to check back with theTVaddict.com tomorrow (on a scheduled Turkey break of course) to see if your post was featured.

Week in Rewind: UGLY BETTY, TERMINATOR, 90210 & More!

November 24, 2008 By theTVaddict 12 Comments

BETTY’s Back: Marc and Betty’s all too brief (see video above) albeit incredibly heart-warming moment at the end of Thursday’s BETTY was the highlight of what is shaping up to be an increasingly entertaining season. And no, we’re not just saying that because Michael Urie is our new Twitter BFF.

9021Oh-Oh: Here’s something for the brains behind 90210 to ponder while their show is on holiday hiatus. Thanks to Tuesday’s not-so-subtle hint at an unexpected bundle of joy for Adrianna, an absolutely ridiculous story involving Annie hiding the fact that she’s the school mascot and the truly unoriginal idea that the Wilson family’s newly discovered half-brother Sean is (surprise, surprise) up to no good, this TV Addict will be spending his holiday hiatus debating whether or not to return to the zip when 90210 returns in January.

Hasta La Vista Toby Zeigler: TERMINATOR THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES showrunner Josh Friedman may not makes thing easy with his penchant for time travel story-lines that make our head spin. But after giving us an hour of the artist formerly known as David Silver (Brian Austin Green) going manno a manno the artist formerly known as Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff) we’re willing to let it go.

Breaking: ABC Cancels PUSHING DAISIES, ELI STONE and DIRTY SEXY MONEY

November 20, 2008 By theTVaddict 38 Comments

With apologies in advance for our spectacularly unimaginative acronym, theTVaddict.com interrupts what should have been a highly enjoyable night of television (or to be more specific: UGLY BETTY, THE OFFICE, 30 ROCK, GREY’S ANATOMY, SUPERNATURAL, SMALLVILLE and LIFE ON MARS) to bring you some Awfully Bad Cancellation News.

ABC has officially pulled the plug on PUSHING DAISIES, ELI STONE and DIRTY SEXY MONEY.

And while the Alphabet Network has yet to ‘officially’ cancel the shows — most likely to avoid the deluge of lipstick that NBC is currently accumulating as a result of their shoddy treatment of LIPSTICK JUNGLE. Entertainment Weekly, E! Online and The Hollywood Reporter have all gone ahead, and ‘exclusively’ reported that all three shows will not be shooting any episodes past their initial 13 episode order.
