You Be The Critic: Thursday Night TV

November 9, 2007 By theTVaddict 11 Comments

If Michael Scott awarded a Dundee for ‘Comedy Night Done Right,’ it would surely go to last night’s 30 ROCK. Between the funniest David Schwimmer appearance since his days at Central Perk, Kenneth dressing down the TGS staff for their slightly inappropriate party behavior [“Harlem Globetrotter — does that name mean nothing to you?”] and Jack’s take on the network market research “Look how Greenzo is testing… all the demographics love him … colored people, broads, fairies, Commies… Gosh, we gotta update these forms.” 30 ROCK was on fire. Which makes it even harder to come to grips with the fact that come December we’ll be 30 ROCK free for quite a while.

Which bring up this point — TV Addict Strike Survival Tip #1. Is anyone else finding that lately they’re in no rush to watch television? Traditionally on Thursdays, I stay up into the wee hours of the night in a desperate attempt to watch all of my favorites. But last night, figuring I’ve got nothing to look forward to but a long cold winter of repeats and reality — I thought to myself, what’s the rush? Why not take a page from the bear that hibernates and stock up.

Oh who am I kidding? I’m a TV Addict with zero self control [see: my ridiculous collection of TV on DVD]. Post away with your thoughts on last night’s television so I know what to watch first! My predictions on what you guys will say.

SUPERNATURAL = Awesome.
THE OFFICE = Too much Michael.
GREY’S ANATOMY = Uneven.
UGLY BETTY = Hilarious.

And finally, a quick pet peeve. Why does NBC bother putting an ‘HD’ beside SCRUBS in my PVR’s channel guide. SCRUBS isn’t filmed in HD and never will be. Yet every Thursday I get my hopes up. So stop messing with us.

Introducing the TV Blog Coalition

tv blog coalition

Introducing the TV Blog Coalition. Think of it as a weekly Must Read TV from some of the web’s finest television blogs.

The TV Addict: Wondering how the writer’s strike is going to effect your favorite shows? Check out Our Writer’s Strike for Dummies. Need proof that writer’s are actually worth the money — see our favorite quotes of the week! Curious as to this TV Addict’s take on the strike, click here. Tired of all this strike talk already — take a trip down memory lane with our Scranton OFFICE Convention diary.

BuzzSugar: We reminisced about My So-Called Life and wondered how well everyone remembers it. We mulled over the current state of Heroes. We thought HBO’s In Treatment sounded more intense than a college course. And we actually liked Blake Lewis’ first single post-American Idol. Yeah, we know.

Daemon’s TV: Sandie finds weird couples on TV and shares her new TV addictions (Supernatural, Malcolm in the Middle, and Torchwood). In addition, she gets a first look at Rachel Bilson (Summer in The O.C.) in NBC’s Chuck.

Give Me My Remote: The TV Writer’s Strike is on everyone’s minds, but there’s still a lot of TV to talk about in TV land. GMMR is shocked to discover that she misses Karen Filipelli on The Office, but not shocked that she isn’t missing Cameron, House and Foreman on House. Should she be? And her readers are wondering if her love for all things Pushing Daisies is healthy or something they should be worried about. GMMR ended her week as she always does by catching up on all the latest TV news with a cocktail.

Glowy Box: Liz answered questions posed by the Googling masses about Desperate Housewives, The Bachelor, and Grey’s Anatomy. She also marveled at the extreme improvement in Desperate Housewives’ writing this season, and shook her head and sighed at Brad’s poor decision-making skills on The Bachelor.

Mikey Likes TV: Mikey listed the many ways in which he’s disappointed by Heroes: Generations, was surprised by how much he likes the new season of Nip/Tuck and forgot about it all after news of Joss Whedon’s blissful TV partnership with Eliza Dushku.

Ramblings of a TV Whore: We recalled about our favorite Halloween episodes from classic Roseanne to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Ugly Betty. Plus, Rae found out about Joss Whedon’s new show, Dollhouse, which proves she’d follow him anywhere… even to Fox.

TheTVaddict.com Week in Rewind

October 14, 2007 By theTVaddict 41 Comments

Welcome to the first of hopefully what will become a regular feature on theTVaddict.com. THE TV ADDICT’S WEEK IN REWIND A look back at last week’s good/bad/ugly in the world of television.

BEST EPISODE OF THE WEEK: SUPERNATURAL
Creepy kids in Hollywood are tricky business. For every Haley Joel Osment, there’s an annoying and pretentious Molly Walker [HEROES]. Thankfully, Eric Kripe and Co. know what they’re doing, and SUPERNATURAL’S second episode of the season titled “The Kids Are Alright” proved exactly that — offering up a trifecta of SUPERNATURAL goodness — frights, heart and surprises. Oh, and did we mention, Ruby’s a Demon!

EMOTIONAL IMPACT OF THE WEEK: GREY’S ANATOMY
Episode by episode, Shonda Rhimes is making good on her promise to rehabilitate Seattle Grace’s comatose Doctors. The funeral our favorite residents had for ‘really old guy’ was both touching and funny, which is what GREY’S excels at.

FUNNIEST MOMENT OF THE WEEK: 30 ROCK
Between Jenna’s declaration of “Me Like Food” and Will Arnett’s game of one-upmanship with Jack this TV Addict can’t decide. Does an entire twenty-two minutes of 30 ROCK count as a ‘moment’?

LAMEST STORY-LINE OF THE WEEK: HIRO
While HEROES as of late has quite a few to lame stories choose from, the most cringe-worthy is stacking up to be Hiro’s stuck in Feudal Japan. If HEREOS doesn’t start stepping it up soon, this TV Addict’s going to have to start using his only super-power. Changing the channel at lightening speed.

GRATUITOUS PROMOTION OF THE WEEK:GOSSIP GIRL
AS IF the gang from GOSSIP GIRL would all be using Verizon phones to gossip. Everybody knows that the coolest kids in school have iPhones.

WORST NETWORK PROMO: BROTHERS & SISTERS
Because we really thought Justin was dead. Memo to ABC, we’re smarter than your average 5th Grader.

Got a favorite moment from the week in television or a category you’d like to see in next week’s TV ADDICT REWIND? Post away in the comments below.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Good News and Bad

October 8, 2007 By theTVaddict 7 Comments

landry tyra friday night lights

In an effort to sum up Friday’s second season premiere of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, a classic TV theme song comes to mind. “You take the good you take the bad you take them both and there you have… umm, the second season premiere of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS?”

First, the good. From the hilarious ‘What Would Riggins Do’ opening to Julie breaking down in the car as she explained to her dad that she doesn’t want to end up like her mom — no show on television does genuine family drama like FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.

That said, one plot point that I’m not about to spoil [in the off chance you have yet to see the premiere] begs the question. Did FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS just turn into MELROSE PLACE? Or worse, ONE TREE HILL?

I did not see that coming. And short of ‘it’ being a dream sequence [which I’m told it’s not] or a preview of some sort of bizarre FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS/SUPERNATURAL cross-over [he was a demon!], my perception of the show’s most valuable player has irrevocably changed forever.

Will you ever look at Landry Clarke the same again? Did FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS just jump the shark? Or do you have faith that the show’s writers have a plan? Post away with your thoughts below.
