Random Musings for a Monday

August 6, 2007 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

It looks as if execs at the CW want to give young viewers something to talk about: The debut episode of the network’s GOSSIP GIRL has been moved forward a week – to September 19 at 9 p.m. – meaning the show will now launch earlier than major competitors BIONIC WOMAN and PRIVATE PRACTICS, each of which is slated to debut the following Wednesday. Better still, the move will allow GG to capitalize on a lead-in that’s pretty much guaranteed to deliver good numbers in the desired demo as it will now follow the premiere of AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL.

It’s open season on things that go bump in the night as the networks continue seeking out new programs with supernatural themes. FOX has greenlit production on an unusual concept dubbed THE OAKS which focuses on three couples who inhabit the same house at different periods in history, yet are connected by the spirts which haunt the abode. Variety reports that the script caused a bit of a bidding war between several networks, with FOX putting big bucks on the block. Not to be outdown, NBC has ponied up a nice wad of cash for their own spookfest: an untitled project from former OC writer John Stephens which focuses on cops who make a living by busting the undead.

Reality television is taking a beating this week. First, the issue of New York magazine which hits stands today accuses Bravo – home of such hits as PROJECT RUNWAY and TOP CHEF – of playing down and dirty with contestants. While the story praises the quality of Bravo’s offerings, it accuses the shows of putting contestants through the ringer and making them sign very restrictive contracts with long-lasting implications. Meanwhile, rude chef Gordon Ramsay may be in for a taste of what he so often dishes out on HELL’S KITCHEN now that he’s being sued by a Manhattan chef who accuses the foul-mouthed cook of staging scenes for his latest reality series. According to Martin R. Hyde, former general manager of Dillon’s restaurant, Ramsay hired actors to pose as diners and planted tainted meat in the establishment’s fridge and then blamed Hyde for it being there. The lawsuit goes on to allege that in filming his new show – an Americanized version of his Brit hit, RAMSAY’S KITCHEN NIGHTMARES – the tempermental chef humiliated Hyde to the point where he had to quit his job to avoid further abuse.

Burning Questions From Comic Con

August 1, 2007 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

With Comic Con officially over, all that this TV Addict is left with — aside from somewhat of a sunburn and far too much swag — are questions. With that in mind, I thought I’d through a few out knowing full well my readers are far smarter than a fifth grader me.

1. With the announcement that Zachary Quinto has been cast as the new Spock, where does that leave the character of Sylar on HEROES?

2. At the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA panel, showrunner Ronald D. Moore promised that there would be a lot of Adama/Starbuck interaction in the January 2008 series premiere. Which Adama was he referring to?

3. Did Jared Padelecki REALLY miss his flight to Comic Con? Or was he simply terrified of being trampled by 10,000 screaming fans. Honestly, having walked by the SUPERNATURAL booth, I really wouldn’t blame him either way.

4. Was anyone else surpised how much Tricia Helfer (BSG’S Six) resembled Julia Roberts (specifically in the giant smile area!).

5. With the anouncement that Kevin Smith will direct the first installment of HEROES: ORIGINS, is anyone willing to put money down that JJ Abrams will be next in line (Greg Grunberg promised he’d put in a good word).

6. Which of the HEROES cast members that attended this year’s HEROES panel will be missing from next years?

7. Does anyone else find it odd that two British actresses (Michelle Ryan and Lena Headey) will be playing two of America’s most iconic female heroines this coming season. (The Bionic Woman and Sarah Connor respectively).

The TV Addict Answers Your Comic Con Questions

July 26, 2007 By theTVaddict 5 Comments

With Nerd Fest Comic Con starting tomorrow I thought I’d take a moment to answer a few of the questions that I’ve been sent throughout the week with regards to this weekend’s big event.

1. What costume will you be donning at this year’s Comic Con? — Mary
The TV Addict: While my initial plan was to dress up as Wolverine, I quickly realized that I was never going to top this guy. Hence, I’ll be taking the low-key approach to my comic con costume [drum-roll please…] The TV Addict will be dressing up as the fifth cylon from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. Translation for those of you who don’t speak ‘nerd’: I’ll be human.

2. What panels will you be attending? — Jeff
The TV Addict: While my schedule’s still up in the air, I’ll definitely be attending the panels for LOST, PARAMOUNT, PUSHING DAISIES, BIONIC WOMAN, THE SIMPSONS, TV GUIDE’S HOT LIST, HEROES, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, FUTURAMA and THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. Panels I’d like to check out but may not have the time include TIN MAN, FLASH GORDON and SUPERNATURAL.

3. While I’m incredibly bitter that you’re at Comic Con and I’m not, I still want to follow along on your adventure! How can I stalk you from afar? — Jenn
The TV Addict: Great question Jenn. Thanks to the wonder that is the internet, following people is easier than ever. Not only will I be live blogging throughout the weekend, you can follow me virtually via Twitter. Add me as a friend to be sent wireless updates in real time. Thanks Twitter for bringing stalking into the twenty-first century!

Jenny’s This Week on TV

July 22, 2007 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Welcome to a new week for This Week on TV! Ahh, I can almost smell the fall shows now. Is anyone else getting excited about the new season? The tv networks are beginning to air more and more of the promos for the new shows and I have to say, I’m REALLY looking forward to Chuck. He’s so freakin adorable and the premise is great. I can’t wait! But there are some good things on this week as well, so let’s see what’s playing this week!

SUNDAY

Sunday is the premiere of the new miniseries on Spike TV called The Kill Point. It is 2-hours tonight, starting at 9/8c. This 4-part miniseries stars Donnie Wahlberg and John Leguizamo as two men who square off during a bank heist gone horribly wrong and hostage negotiations ensue. Leguizamo plays the leader of a small group of military veterans who set out to rob a major bank in Pittsburgh and Wahlberg plays the Pittsburgh Police Department Hostage Negotiator. This looks fantastic! Nice way to spend 2 hours a week for a month!

Tonight is also the series premiere of a new reality show called Trick It Out on MTV at 10/9c. $15,000, 14 days, a beat-up old import and two teams of tuners who think they’ve got what it takes. It pits two top teams of Tuners against each other every week in a high-stakes competition to see who has the best skills in the land. Each crew of four Tuners gets a similar car to start with, 14 days, and $15,000 to do their very best cosmetic work. In the end, the teams are judged by a panel of experts – including R.J. Devera, the top Tuner in the nation – the winning crews gets to go home with its car, while the loser gets nothing but the satisfaction of giving it their very best effort. If you are a car fanatic, this show’s for you!

Also on tonight:

  • *Season Finale* – The Next Food Network Star – Food Network @ 9/8c

Jenny’s This Week on TV

July 14, 2007 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

Welcome to a new week for This Week on TV! What a great week last week! Monk, Psych, Burn Notice (one of my new favorite shows!) & Eureka. I’m not sure you can get any better than that! Let’s see if this week has any other big moments…

SUNDAY

Sunday is the series premiere of 2 shows on Lifetime. First up is Side Order of Life at 8/7c. This show stars Jason Priestley (Beverly Hills 90210 & Tru Calling) & Diana-Maria Riva (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip), along with Christopher Gartin and Marisa Coughlan. It centers on a young magazine photographer who suddenly re-evaluates her life and impending nuptials after receiving a “wake-up call from the universe.” I’ve actually heard good things about the show, so I think I’ll have to record it and see if it lives up to the hype!

Next up is State of Mind at 9/8c. This one stars Lili Taylor (Six Feet Under), Kevin Chamberlin (Heroes), Theresa Randle (Law & Order: Criminal Intent) & Devon Gummersal (My So-Called Life). “Created by practicing psychotherapist, author, professor and mother, Amy Bloom, the series follows a brilliant, take-charge family therapist whose personal problems rival those of her eclectic and offbeat patients after discovering her husband is cheating on her with their marriage counselor.” The executive producers are Greer Shephard and Michael Robin, who produce Nip/Tuck and The Closer, so how can I NOT watch??

Also on tonight:

  • *Series Premiere* – Rock of Love with Bret Michaels – VH1 @ 9/8c – (90-Minute Series Premiere)
  • *Series Premiere* – Scott Baio is 45… and Single – VH1 @ 10:30/9:30c – (1-Hour Series Premiere)
  • *Series Premiere* – Suburban Virgin – MTV @ 10/9c
  • *New* – American Body Shop – Comedy Central @ 10:30/9:30c
  • *New* – Army Wives – Lifetime @ 10/9c
  • *New* – Big Brother – CBS @ 8/7c
  • *New* – Entourage – HBO @ 10/9c
  • *New* – Flight of the Conchords – HBO @ 10:30/9:30c
  • *New* – Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels – A&E @ 9/8c
  • *New* – John From Cincinnati – HBO @ 9/8c
  • *New* – Meadowlands – Showtime @ 10/9c
  • *New* – The 4400 – USA @ 9/8c
  • *New* – The Dead Zone – USA @ 10:01/9:01c

Some Super Casting News

July 12, 2007 By theTVaddict 21 Comments

SMALLVILLE has found its SuperGirl and much to this TV Addict’s chagrin, series creator Al Gough decided to ignore your brilliant casting advice. Virtual unknown (unless you’re a fan of INSTANT STAR) Laura Vandervoort has been cast as Kara (SuperGirl). Fans can get a closer look at Ms. Vandervoort’s, err assets, at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con where Vandervoort will be joining SMALLVILLE executive producers Al Gough and Miles Millar for an audience Q&A.

In more super casting news, SUPERNATURAL is finally adding some Y chromosome to equal the X that is Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. According to SuperScooper Michael Ausiello:

Katie Cassidy — the 20-year-old daughter of ’70s teen idol David Cassidy — has been tapped to play Ruby, a fellow demon hunter Sam and Dean meet in the show’s third season premiere. In the casting breakdown, the character is described as “sexy, brutal and ruthless.”

As of yet, there’s no word on which lucky actress has won the role of Bela, that other Demon Hunter. But one thing is a given. Almost any regular reader of theTVaddict.com would sell their soul to the yellow-eyed-demon for the chance to spend nine months on a cramped Vancouver set with Sam and Dean.
