The leader of the trafficking ring is none other than Roulette (guest star Dichen Lachman). To make matters worse, Slaver’s Moon has a red sun, which means Kara and Mon-El are stripped of their powers and stuck on the planet with no way home. JANE THE VIRGIN 3.09 “Chapter Fifty-Two”: Jane (Gina Rodriguez) finds it difficult to stop meddling in other people’s relationships, especially Xo’s (Andrea Navedo) and Rafael’s (Justin Baldoni.) Confused about Barry’s hesitation to stop Plunder, Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) decides to step in as Kid Flash. Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) offers Julian (Tom Felton) a job. Millicent Shelton directed the episode written by Grainne Godfree & David Kob.

However, when the team arrives they discover that Rip has no memories of his past due to “time drift” and is just a graduate film student. After trying to convince Rip of who he was, they discover that he possesses an incredibly powerful artifact known as the Spear of Destiny, which the Legion of Doom is after. Ray (Bradon Routh) and Nate (Nick Zano) realize that the Aberration has also affected them personally making it difficult to help the team. Meanwhile, Rory (Dominic Purcell) asks Stein (Victor Garber) for help and makes him promise to keep it a secret from the team. Caity Lotz, Franz Drameh and Maisie Richardson-Sellers also star. Dermott Downs directed the episode written by Keto Shimizu & Chris Fedak.

While in prison, Diggle (David Ramsey) fights for his life. Gregory Smith directed the episode written by Ben Sokolowski & Brian Ford Sullivan.

FREQUENCY 1.13 “Signal Kiss” (Season Finale): Raimy (Peyton List) makes a discovery that stops her cold. She quickly reaches out to Frank (Riley Smith) on the ham and voices her concerns. Meanwhile, truths are revealed. Mekhi Phifer, Devin Kelley, Daniel Bonjour and Lenny Jacobson also star. Thomas Wright directed the episode written by Jeremy Carver & Nancy Won.

Thursday, January 26

SUPERNATURAL 12.09 “First Blood”: After being arrested for the attempted assassination of the President of The United States, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) must find a way out of an underground, government-run, detention facility in the middle of nowhere. Determined to find her sons, Mary (guest star Samantha Smith) and Castiel (Misha Collins) seek assistance from an unlikely source. Robert Singer directed the episode written by Andrew Dabb.

RIVERDALE 1.01 “Chapter One: The River’s Edge”: As a new school year begins, the town of Riverdale is reeling from the tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom. Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music — not follow in his dad Fred’s (Luke Perry) footsteps — despite his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (guest star Sarah Habel). With the weight of the world on his shoulders, Archie must look for a new music mentor and turns to Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) but she is focused solely on her band, Josie and the Pussycats. Weighing heavily on his mind is also his fractured friendship with budding writer Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). Meanwhile, girl-next-door Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) is anxious to see her crush Archie after being away all summer, but she’s not quite ready to reveal her true feelings to him. And Betty’s nerves, which are hardly soothed by her overbearing mother Alice (Mädchen Amick), aren’t the only thing holding her back. When a new student, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), arrives in town from New York with her mother Hermione (Marisol Nichols), there’s an undeniable spark between her and Archie, but Veronica doesn’t want to risk her new friendship with Betty. And then there’s Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), Riverdale’s Queen Bee, who is happy to stir up trouble amongst the others even though she’s keeping a few secrets of her own. Lee Toland Krieger directed the episode written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

Friday, January 27

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES 8.10 “Nostalgia’s A Bitch”: Sybil (guest star Nathalie Kelley) enacts revenge on Damon (Ian Somerhalder) by putting him in a catatonic state. Caroline (Candice King) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) enter Damon’s mind and run into familiar faces from the past, only to discover Stefan (Paul Wesley) is the key to Damon’s fate. It’s a race against time for the bell as both Sybil and her sister Seline (Kristen Gutoskie) jockey for its control. Zach Roerig also stars. Kellie Cyrus directed the episode written by Brett Matthews.

CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND 2.12 “Is Josh Free in Two Weeks?”: Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) realizes she must rely on her friends, which includes her local delivery man Patrick (guest star Seth Green), when she gets overwhelmed by a stressful situation. Rebecca also discovers she has a lot in common with Nathaniel (guest star Scott Michael Foster) when his father (guest star David Grant Wright) comes to town. Vincent Rodriguez III, Donna Lynne Champlin, Pete Gardner, Gabrielle Ruiz and Vella Lovell also star. Katie Schwartz wrote the episode, directed by Alex Hardcastle.

Sam and Dean were arrested by the Secret Service in the winter finale of SUPERNATURAL. When we next meet up with the Winchesters, six weeks will have passed since they were thrown in some type of Guantanamo-type prison.

But first the episode seems to pick up where the last one left off and we’ll see the brothers arrive at their “new home”. Then, weeks later, Mary and Castiel seem to mount a rescue attempt. But are they needed to save the brothers or will the boys make it out themselves? And will the British Men of Letters — who recently lended the Winchesters a hand — step in to help break them out of prison?

Browse through the photos above and don’t miss the return of SUPERNATURAL on Thursday, January 26 at its new time of 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

SUPERNATURAL Fall Finale Recap: The Next Phase in the Lucifer Saga

December 8, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

spn

Lucifer was back to jumping from vessel to vessel in the fall finale of SUPERNATURAL. First there was a CEO, then an archbishop (which was particularly ironic). The CEO was toast, but the Winchesters soon came to learn that the archbishop might be possessed. They headed out to track him down, while Castiel and Crowley continued to impersonate FBI agents and follow their own leads.

The brothers headed out to investigate the archbishop/Lucifer and found that he went on a slaughtering spree before the devil dumped the priest’s vessel. But Lucifer wasn’t sad because he soon found a much better vessel — the President of the United States. It turned out the man is deeply religious and misguided, because he said “yes” to Lucifer without really realizing what it would mean. Lucifer killed one of his Secret Service agents as his first official presidential action, but found himself a bit lost when his staff asked him to guide them in a prayer for their fallen comrade and then perform the actual duties of President. His staff didn’t seem to catch on and certainly not the aide we learn he’s secretly sleeping with. After all, she’s talking about them going public with her relationship and having a child.

After Crowley reached out to a contact, he stopped by the bunker with some information: he knew the identity of Lucifer’s newest vessel — the President. Sam debated calling Mick for help and started tracking the President, while Crowley headed out to recruit Rowena in case they could get to Lucifer. Fortunately for Crowley, her latest boyfriend had been seeing another girlfriend on the side, so Crowley literally exploded him in revenge (which was a big bonding between mother and son).

Back at the bunker, Cas started hearing a plethora of voices over Angel Radio — the announcement that a nephilim (an angel-human hybrid) had been created. This hybrid is said to be incredibly powerful, so the Winchesters and Cas headed out to find Lucifer’s new girlfriend/mistress/hooker. But they got sidetracked by the Secret Service, who were warned by President Lucifer that two men were trying to assassinate them.

Enter Mr. Ketch, who announced his arrival with a grenade launcher aimed at the Secret Service SUV. He then told Cas to wipe the memories of the agents and introduced himself to the brothers. He explains to the the guys that Mick and the British Men of Letters strongly want them to join forces and revealed that Sam called them (although he hung up before he could speak to them). He understands things are different here, but he insisted they just want to collaborate. Plus, they’ve got a lot of cool toys they can introduce to the Winchesters and the other American hunters! And one of them might even be helpful in trapping Lucifer.

But first they need to trap Kelly, the President’s girlfriend. Which is where Crowley comes in, because he kidnaped Kelly and brought her to the others. They decided to tell her the truth and Cas revealed that her baby is an abomination (who sets bibles on fire with her touch). So she agreed to help them and lured the President to a motel.

Sam managed to use one of Ketch’s toys to partially suck Lucifer out of his vessel (which weakened him) and Rowena started her spell, sending the devil back to Hell for good. Which is the good news. The bad news is that Rowena, Cas and Crowley headed out, but the Winchesters were both arrested for attempted assassination of the President, who managed to survive. Soon after we saw Kelly escape Cas while the pair were in a diner, taking her abomination of a child with her. She then called Cas to say she doesn’t want to get rid of her baby and he can’t stop her.

Now SUPERNATURAL leaves fans with two major cliffhangers for the next six weeks: the arrest of Sam and Dean and the disappearance of Lucifer’s spawn child.

SUPERNATURAL returns with all new episodes on Thursday, January 26 at its new time of 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. Watch a sneak peek for the January return below. It looks like the Winchesters are thrown into a black site prison, while Mary and Castiel try to figure out where they’ve gone.

SUPERNATURAL Sneak Peek: Words With Friends

December 1, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

capture

Dean has fully embraced apps in tonight’s SUPERNATURAL….and so has his mother.

In a new scene from “Rock Never Dies”, we learn that Dean has been playing Words with Friends with Mary while she’s away. He even introduces her to the word “twerking”. Sam, however, is annoyed that his brother has been playing games while he’s been searching for information about the British Men of Letters, but once he learns about the Mary connection he’s less upset. On the other hand, he does think it’s fundamentally unfair that Dean is playing WWF with a woman who didn’t know what a cell phone was until a few weeks ago.

And then we learn that Mary is a quick learner, because she schools Dean in top scoring words.

Elsewhere in the episode, Cas and Crowley call the Winchesters when they get a lead on Lucifer. This eventually leads the group to a concert where Lucifer (still in Vince Vicente’s body) has gathered together a large group of fans so that he can slaughter them.

Watch a sneak peek below for an all new episode of SUPERNATURAL airing tonight (December 1) at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. When you’re finished with the clip go check out a behind the scenes tour of the SUPERNATURAL sets, props room, wardrobe department and more!

SUPERNATURAL: Go Behind the Scenes with Production, VFX, Wardrobe and Props

December 1, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

  • Slide 1 of 77

There’s a lot of interesting things to see behind the scenes if you visit the SUPERNATURAL studios. There’s the endless rows of flannel shirts, the gleaming Impala, the cool Men of Letters bunker, the multitude of props and the VFX trailers on the side of the main building.

During a recent visit to the set of SUPERNATURAL, we got a behind the scenes look at each of these elements and now you can view them for yourself in the slideshow above and hear a bit of trivia about some of the elements that go into making the show.

During our tour, we spoke to Robert Leader (Art Director), Christopher Cooper (Prop Master), Mark Meloche (VFX Supervisor), Jeff Budnick (Picture Car Coordinator), and Kerry Weinrauch (Costume Designer) about all of the different aspects that goes into making the show.

New episodes of SUPERNATURAL air on Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

The Men of Letters bunker was inspired by art deco architecture. The set designers also looked at old war bunkers (although this one is far more decorative).

  • Slide 1 of 77

Originally this piece was made of real circuit boards, but as they kept the set they decided to build their own version so they didn’t have to keep renting the real one.

They never mess up the “hero” car (ie. the prettiest version of the Impala they have), says Jeff. They bought this main car in season 4 with 12,000 miles and now it only has about 17,000 miles. It used to be blue with blue interior, but they made it all black. There are plenty of other Impalas to use for stunts.

The trunk of the car was empty when we visited the set. All of the pieces inside are typically stored in boxes in the prop room.

  • Slide 1 of 77
  • Slide 1 of 77

This is one of two lock ups for the wardrobe department (and this one alone is big). In the warehouse off-site, they store a lot of the uniforms or children’s clothes or the types of clothes they don’t use on a continual basis — like any period costumes.

Kerry said that her department likes to have fun and push boundaries whenever they can. For example, the imaginary friends episode last season allowed them to take the costumes a bit further than normal. But in something like the wrestling episode they can only take things so far before people start looking like cartoon characters.

  • Slide 1 of 77

One of the most difficult aspects of dressing a large group of people in a show such as this is ensuring that you don’t have everyone in the same color. According to Kerry “everybody seems to eat up the blue and the green really quickly”.

  • Slide 1 of 77

Along one wall of the warehouse lies boxes and boxes of shoes and hats worn by the various characters.

  • Slide 1 of 77

The wardrobe department keeps all of Sam’s and Dean’s clothes up in the front by their offices because they access them the most. A few of the brothers’ clothes from past episodes/seasons are considered outdated or retired after a suitable period of time. Every year they “tend to try and get the brothers a new batch of jackets and shirts and things like that. And update jeans just because they start off with 8 or 9 of one thing and then there’s only 3 left”, Kerry said. They’ll have to retire those clothes in the future as well if they run through them because they need multiples of each piece of clothing for all of the stunts.

  • Slide 1 of 77

The buyers get a lot of the flannel shirts at Levi’s or Mark’s Work Warehouse. They dress Dean in more solid colors and strive not to have the brothers wear the same types of patterns. Sam, meanwhile, wears more cowboy type shirts. The buyers will purchase about 7-9 of the same shirt in a few different sizes when they go shopping. They often find the perfect shirt but can’t buy multiple pieces as they may not be available. There are a few shirts where they have only 1-2 copies, so they appear in quick little scenes where they are less likely to be damaged in some way.

  • Slide 1 of 77

Rowena, sadly, has given up the ballgown look in season 12. Kerry fought to have Rowena keep her look because it’s such a strange and quirky characteristic, but Rowena is embracing more modern things this season. The wardrobe department is, however, trying to keep as many elements of her old look as possible and are trying to incorporate clothes that are long and flowing. The one good thing about the lack of ballgowns, however, is that it’s easier to do stunts in normal clothes.

  • Slide 1 of 77

Meloche in the VFX department tends to leave scenes up to the director so that the director can turn their vision into reality. But there are times when he has to suggest doing things a certain way for the sake of VFX. For example, while a lot of shows/films will leave the camera static (ie. standing in place) during a VFX shot, SUPERNATURAL will never do this. That’s one of the things that he mandated because a “static VFX shot bugs [him] because it doesn’t usually fit in with the flow of the show”.

  • Slide 1 of 77

When they aged up Amara they had the older actress come in and they made her lie in the same position as the baby and then lined up her eyes with the baby’s eyes and did a transition between the two.

  • Slide 1 of 77

The banshee is Mark Meloche’s favorite monster as it was a “total collaboration between prosthetics, special effects, visual effects [and] electrics.” The banshee was scripted as having long, straight black hair. But the director (John Badhman) wanted her floating. So when the floating idea came up Meloche said if she was going to be floating they should do an “anti-gravity, underwater look” for the hair. There is also a light in the actress’ mouth — it’s a modified LED rave insert.

  • Slide 1 of 77

The power plant that sits above the Men of Letters bunker in the show doesn’t actually exist. The setting is underneath a bridge in Vancouver and the VFX team digitally removed the bridge and replaced it with a building. The door, however, is entirely real and it’s underneath the bridge.

  • Slide 1 of 77

You’re seeing Florence through the window in the background here in episode 10.16 “Paint It Black”. The VFX team went into Google Maps and took a typology map of the city and then created a 3D environment. This is actually the view that you would see from this building if you were in Florence — it’s geographically correct — but it’s all computer generated in the background.

  • Slide 1 of 77

Digital makeup is a technique that the VFX team has “pushed to the max”. In the case of the veins on Sam’s face in episode 11.02 “Form and Void”, this is all full digital face makeup that was tacked on to the actor. This is something the VFX team is called on to do constantly.

  • Slide 1 of 77

In the season 11 episode “Love Hurts”, we saw a man’s shadow transform into a woman’s shadow behind a window. Meloche explained that they achieved this effect by using “plates”. On the day of filming they had the actor stand in position behind the window and marked his spot on the floor. Then they had the actress come in and stand on the same spot and film her. Then they cleared the window and Meloche’s team took a shot of just the empty window. The transformation shot is later achieved through VFX software.

  • Slide 1 of 77

The VFX crew on SUPERNATURAL (and on other shows and movies) will often use stock footage of a certain building instead of picking up production to go to that location. In the case of this building which appeared in the season 11 episode “The Vessel”, the exterior is stock footage purchased from a footage bank. Then the VFX team added in the banners, the old car and changed the color of the sky.

  • Slide 1 of 77

In episode 10.10 Dean — under the influence of the Mark of Cain — tortured Metatron and cut into his chest with an angel blade. You can see Metatron’s grace glowing through the wound so you probably already assumed that this shot was done by VFX. But you probably didn’t know that the wound in the right photo was on Curtis Armstrong the entire time, as it was going to appear throughout the rest of the scene. It’s done with makeup. The VFX team digitally erased the wound and then revealed it inch by inch as the blade was moving down his chest.

There’s a lot of interesting things to see behind the scenes if you visit the SUPERNATURAL studios. There’s the endless rows of flannel shirts, the gleaming Impala, the cool Men of Letters bunker, the multitude of props and the VFX trailers on the side of the main building.

Will the devil enter the political arena on the winter finale of SUPERNATURAL?

The episode, titled “LOTUS” (the meaning of which will soon become clear) involves our heroes still chasing Lucifer (a quest that begins in episode 12.07). Lucifer may be bored with Hell, but he’s determined to amass as much power and influence in a vessel as possible on earth. That search takes him to the White House, where the President of The United States (guest star David Chisum) unknowingly makes a deal with the devil. Yikes, Lucifer as President?!

Meanwhile, as Lucifer messes with the political sphere, Sam and Dean team up with Castiel, Crowley and Rowena in an attempt to take down the devil.

SUPERNATURAL: Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki & Misha Collins Tease Lucifer’s Return

November 30, 2016 By Clarissa 1 Comment

spn

Lucifer may have been banished to the depths of the ocean by Rowena, but the devil will be returning to SUPERNATURAL this week. As photos for the episode show us, his decomposing vessel approaches some witches for a makeover and Vince Vicente is restored to his aging rockstar glory.

But his quest for power is not over. Upon realization that Vincente has a multitude of fans, Lucifer decides to throw a VIP concert as his vessel and then kill all of his fans. This prompts Castiel to reunite with the Winchester brothers to try and stop Lucifer from commiting mass murder.

During a visit to the set of SUPERNATURAL, we spoke with Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester), Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) and Misha Collins (Castiel) about Lucifer’s return.

Collins said that “for much of this season, Castiel’s arc is he’s hunting for Lucifer and trying to hunt him down and yes, he’s banished, but he’s not out the picture and he does — he does come back into play pretty significantly.”

When we last saw Castiel he had teamed up with Crowley to find Lucifer and from the looks of a preview for the episode, they’re still together when Cas calls the Winchesters to let them know he might have a lead. When asked about the new Castiel and Crowley partnership, Collins said “it’s funny because initially they were talking about like a buddy cop comedy thing and I was like ‘oh, come on, that’s not gonna work,’ but we’ve had some funny moments with it that actually did work. They’re both – particularly Cas, Cas is reluctant to be working with Crowley. But we’re muscling through and there’s a lot of eyerolling, which is something that I’ve perfected.”

Padalecki said that he enjoyed the Lucifer storyline overall “even though this season was kind of about going back to the simple things, going back to family. We just had God and his sister the Darkness, and Lucifer [last season]. It was so big at the end of season 11 that we weren’t going to go bigger, so we kind of brought it down without really losing the world we know a lot of and probably wouldn’t choose to ignore. And I like that SUPERNATURAL was able to do that and I always love the Lucifer storylines. I always feel a kindred connection as I’m sure Misha does [as well], having played Lucifer for [a number of] episodes.”

What we do know, however, is that the confrontation between the Winchesters and the devil will be quick. We know, according to the photos, that it happens, but Ackles said that “Let’s just say that we didn’t really get a chance to work with Rick [Springfield] much because most of the time it was spent tracking down Lucifer, so unfortunately we didn’t really get the pleasure of working with him that much. There is a little bit of work with him, but it certainly wasn’t much to talk about because it was so quick.”

SUPERNATURAL Preview: The Devil is a Rock Star

The Winchester brothers headed to Jody’s house for a visit in this week’s SUPERNATURAL. But that visit was cut short when Jody got news that a friend and fellow hunter — Asa Fox — had died on the job. Along with the boys, she headed to Manitoba, Canada to pay her respects to her friend. Mary Winchester also stopped by unexpectedly and we learned that she had saved young Asa many years ago and started him on the hunter path. Dean was upset that Mary had been avoiding them for so long, but she was apologetic. When the group realized that they had been trapped in the house by a crossroads demon who was picking them off one by one, they tried to figure out what to do, eventually splitting off to track the demon. Dean, meanwhile, had ventured outside for some air before Billie stopped by to reap a fresh soul and threw him back inside at his request.

The demon possessed Jody before being exorcised and revealed a big secret about one of the hunters: he was responsible for Asa’s death. In the end, Billie told Mary that she didn’t belong on Earth and gave her a chance to go back to Heaven, but Mary declined the offer. She wasn’t ready to come back to the bunker yet, but she did enjoy a nice breakfast with her boys.
