One [SUPERNATURAL] Fandom to Rule Them All

December 6, 2010 By theTVaddict 11 Comments

tvguide_supernatural

Bad News for fans of CASTLE, BONES, CHUCK, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, and SMALLVILLE: The results are. And despite your best efforts to rally your respective fandoms, SUPERNATURAL’s Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles will be gracing the cover of TV Guide Magazine’s first ever fandom-generated feature hitting newsstands* this Thursday.

* Wikipedia defines “newsstand” as a business that sells newspapers, magazines**, snacks and often items of local interest.

** Before the internet, a “magazine,” was a way in which news was disseminated. For more information on the virtually lost art form that we affectionally refer to as “print” click here.

Channel Surfing with CT: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, SUPERNATURAL, LOST & More!

May 14, 2010 By theTVaddict 11 Comments

Last night’s VAMPIRE DIARIES was the season finale and I’ll be honest: I expected more. During its freshman season, the series has proved itself to be so much more than a Twilight knock-off, specializing in sparkling dialogue, complex relationships and the kind of cliffhangers that would make any daytime soap scribe cry out, “We’re not worthy!” But having said all that, I expected more from the cliffhanger meant to keep us buzzing with excitement all season. Come on, seriously… who hasn’t suspected for months that the whole season was building up to Katherine’s return? And while the “Elena”/Damon kiss was shocking for a second or two, the second Jenna said, “You’d better come on in,” it was pretty clear what was going on. Having believed there was something fishy going on in the mayor’s manse for a while, I’m actually more intrigued by Tyler’s reptilian eyes than the Katherine twist. Obviously, we’re about to introduce another supernatural element… and here’s hoping it’s not werewolves. Making furry manboys the second creature introduced is the oldest trick in the vampire-series playbook. Heck, when daytime sudser DARK SHADOWS gave bloodsucking Barnabas a relative, they brought on cousin Quintin, who soon began howling at the moon and having his mutton chops take over his whole body. All in all, DIARIES had an amazing first season, and last night’s finale was a great capper. If, like me, you’re gonna miss the show a whole lot over the summer, never fear, TRUE BLOOD is returning soon. And how brilliant was HBO to run an ad during DIARIES last night? Very smart, people. Very, very smart!

Channel Surfing with CT: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, SUPERNATURAL & SURVIVOR

May 7, 2010 By theTVaddict 7 Comments

Does anybody do cliffhangers better than THE VAMPIRE DIARIES? Last night’s final-moment revelation that Bonnie hadn’t actually used her powers to neutralize the vampire-destroying weapon so desperately sought by Isobel and company was a jaw-dropper. And how great is the casting department of this show (as well as fellow-CWer SUPERNATURAL, but more on that in a minute)? I was sad to lose Kelly Hu’s hypnotic Pearl, but then in stepped Mia Kirshner’s Isobel. This is perhaps Kirshner’s best role since she first caught my eye as 24’s Mandy back in 2001. And not for nothing, but I’m beginning to suspect that Paul Wesley (Stefan) is an honest-to-God vampire. I mean, the guy was playing a teenager back in 1999 when he was GUIDING LIGHT’s Max. Heck, in true vampire style, he was even using a different name — Paul Wasilewski — at the time!

April 30, 2010 By theTVaddict 9 Comments

With the exception of PARKS AND RECREATION and THE OFFICE both of which put peripheral characters Ron Swanson and Kelly Kapoor front and center to great effect, this TV Addict — courtesy of an excellent dinner with fellow TV blogger @thetelevixen — is embarrassingly behind on Thursday TV. Which is why we’re once again passing the buck to you — our far smarter and better looking readers — to post away with your thoughts on last night’s May sweeps instalments of COMMUNITY, PARKS AND RECREATION, THE OFFICE, 30 ROCK, BONES, FRINGE, VAMPIRE DIARIES, SUPERNATURAL, FLASHFORWARD, GREY’S ANATOMY and PRIVATE PRACTICE.

Channel Surfing with CT: SUPERNATURAL, COUNTDOWN & AMERICAN IDOL

April 23, 2010 By theTVaddict 7 Comments

Back when it first hit the airwaves, I don’t think anyone — including the people in charge — could have imagined that SUPERNATURAL would eventually develop into one of the most complex, nuanced, emotionally-satisfying shows on the airwaves while still managing to work the phrase “bag of dicks” into the dialogue. But last night’s episode — Hammer Of The Gods — was without doubt one of the best hours ever produced by this show, once written off by many (myself included) as an X-FILES-meets-BUFFY knock-off. My favorite line had to be Baldur’s opening speech to the gathered deities: “Before we get down to brass tacks, some ground rules: No slaughtering each other. Curb your wrath. Oh, and keep your hands off the local virgins. We’re trying to keep a low profile here.” The twitterverse erupted with shouts of “nooo!” when Gabriel was killed by Kali, relief when it turned out he’d tricked the gathered Gods, and then “noooo!” again when he was done in by his brother, Lucifer, after another of those wonderfully intense family moments this show does so well. While many are extremely upset about his death, the fact is that for a tale involving the Apocalypse to have any gravatas at all, blood must be spilled, and it must be the blood of characters we have grown attached to. With the introduction of Matt Frewer (MAX HEADROOM) as Pestilence — who might be the most stomach-churning baddie ever introduced to the canvas — and only three episodes remaining in the season, the stage has been perfectly set for what I can only imagine will be one hell of a finale. Pun intended.
