The CW Announces its 2020-2021 Primetime Schedule

May 14, 2020 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

The CW has announced its 2020-2021 primetime schedule and it is proactively pushing the official start of the new season to January 2021. With filming across the world halted due to COVID-19, the delayed start of the new season should give the studios and network time to get back to work and start producing original content. The network admitted that they don’t yet know when filming for its shows will resume, but they’re building in what they hope is ample time.

“This year, The CW has made the proactive strategic decision to launch its new season in January 2021, rolling out a line-up of our signature returning series which will be joined next year by our four new series, including the return of the DC’s most iconic superhero in SUPERMAN & LOIS, the return of the Texas Rangers in WALKER, the reimagined KUNG FU and the rebellious drama THE REPUBLIC OF SARAH. And by moving our new season to January, we are stocking our fall with a balance of original and acquired scripted series and alternative programming that fits The CW brand and provides fresh programming through the fourth quarter,” said Mark Pedowitz, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The CW.
Despite the late start, expect the shows to have the usual amount of episodes, with some having 22 episodes, others having 13 episodes, etc. (which could mean fewer repeats to air).
The fourth quarter of 2020, previously the official start of the fall season, will instead consist of a mix of original and acquired scripted/alternative series, including: SWAMP THING, TELL ME A STORY, CORONER, DEAD PIXELS, PANDORA, THE OUTPOST, TWO SENTENCE HORROR STORIES, WORLD’S FUNNIEST ANIMALS, MASTERS OF ILLUSION, WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY? and PENN & TELLER: FOOL US.

Q4 2020 will also consist of the final episodes of SUPERNATURAL, which has yet to film the final two episodes of the series. The show went on an indefinite hiatus after episode 15×13 aired at the end of March, and has seven more episodes to air, including the series finale. When Pedowitz was asked how filming would work with star Jared Padalecki to start filming for his new series WALKER, he said that as soon as they were able to, Padalecki and co-star Jensen Ackles would return to film the final episodes. He hopes that Padalecki’s transition to WALKER would be “seamless” due to the fact that the studios behind the scenes are in communication and want to make this work.

The usual CW/DC show crossover extravaganza would also be pared down this coming season, with only two hours expected to have a crossover (right now they are in discussions for SUPERMAN & LOIS and BATWOMAN to crossover). They are hoping to air it as a two-hour block on a Sunday night at the end of Q1 or the beginning of Q2 in 2021.
Pedowitz also noted that despite the fact that they aren’t on this schedule, there are still active discussions for the ARROW and THE 100 spin-offs.

The CW’s fourth quarter 2020 primetime schedule is as follows:

January 8, 2020 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Today at its TCA presentation, ABC announced the upcoming dates for the series finales of MODERN FAMILY and HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, along with news about new show pick-ups.

MODERN FAMIY. The series finale of the show will air on Wednesday, April 8. In addition, ABC is giving fans the power to program an entire night filled with their favorite “Modern Family” episodes that will air Wednesday, March 11 (8:00-11:00 p.m. EDT).

HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. The show will return on Thursday, April 2 to air its final six episodes, with the series finale airing on Thursday, May 14.

THE BEAUTY AND THE BAKER. The new series starring Victor Rasuk and Nathalie Kelley will premiere on Monday, April 6 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. According to ABC, “Daniel Garcia (Rasuk) is working in the family bakery and doing everything that his loving Cuban parents and siblings expect him to do. But when he meets Noa Hamilton (Kelley) on a wild Miami night, his life moves into the spotlight. Will this unlikely couple upend their lives to be together and pull his family into a culture clash?”

THE CONNORS. The show will air a special live episode the night of the New Hampshire Primary on Tuesday, February 11. ABC News coverage of the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary will be incorporated into the story in real time as the results roll in during the evening. ABC hinted that “The live episode will find Mark (Ames McNamara) watching the results of the primary for a school report with Harris (Emma Kenney), who is apathetic to the electoral process and believes money’s influence in politics means real change is impossible. The rest of the Conners share their differing takes on why they all think everyone should vote, including their working-class perspective that you may have to vote for a candidate you don’t love but one that will “screw you the least.” All of this happens against the backdrop of romance when Louise (guest star Katey Sagal) gets an opportunity that might send her away from Lanford, prompting the family to interfere in Dan’s (John Goodman) complicated relationship with her by throwing Louise a surprise going-away party, creating major new tensions between Dan and his daughters.”

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN LIVE! ABC has joined together with Mel Brooks to bring the Broadway version of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN to the channel for a live airing later this fall.

THE BRIDES. ABC has picked up a new supernatural drama named THE BRIDES to pilot. The show is created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (RIVERDALE) and is described as “a sexy contemporary reimagining of DRACULA” and “a family drama with a trio of powerful female leads at its heart.”

THIRTYSOMETHING. Finally, ABC announced that the network has picked up a sequel series to THIRTYSOMETHING called THIRTYSOMETHING(ELSE). The show will follow an ensemble of new faces playing the grown-up, 30-something children of the original cast reprised by Ken Olin (Michael Steadman), Mel Harris (Hope Murdoch), Timothy Busfield (Elliot Weston) and Patty Wettig (Nancy Weston). Original showrunners Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick will return.

The opening line of Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT, is “If music be the food of love, play on.” The comedy involves the twists and turns of romantic relationships and a lot of “will-they-or-won’t-they?” situations that ends happily for its characters. Back in the ‘80s, television dubbed this conundrum as the “Moonlighting Syndrome,” based on the relationships in the popular TV series starring Cybil Shepard and Bruce Willis. Is NCIS doing TWELFTH NIGHT, MOONLIGHTING, or undergoing some simple “relationship drama?”

Gibbs (Mark Harmon) disappears mysteriously again tonight, leaving McGee in charge. No explanations about his extracurricular activities or how he is filling in as “substitute dad” to his young neighbor, Phineas, helping him with science projects, history lessons and baseball.

What about Gibbs’s “thing” with Jack (Maria Bello)? The jury is out on exactly what that “thing” is, but there definitely is some kind of chemistry taking the pair into an unrevealed-to-date direction. Will that burgeoning “whatever it is” be affected by the return of Jack’s daughter, who was given up for adoption and may be reentering her life? How much does Vance (Rocky Carroll) know about that dynamic? The two seem to be fast friends, and his history with Jack predates her current post at NCIS.

McGee (Sean Murray) slides nicely into the team lead role having shed his insecurity of the past, and Kasie (Diona Reasonover) and Palmer (Brian Dietzen) are evolving out of their uncertainty.

Palmer has an occasional lapse into “autopsy gremlin” mode, but the words “Dr. Palmer” uttered by group historian, Ducky (David McCallum) snap Jimmy back into full-on Medical Examiner mode.

“Moonlighting Syndrome” sufferers, Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Bishop (Emily Wickersham) linger in “will-they-or-won’t-they” limbo, even though the team seems to more inclined to believe “they will” than the duo does. Meanwhile, all this relationship drama is scored to the music of the Navy’s most elite band, as the NCIS team investigates the murder of a musician that performs at diplomatic events around the world. With murder and music in the background, will Gibbs and Jack seem to be inching toward some “thing,” whatever that thing is?

To quote a more modern sage, Lionel Richie, “Throw away the work to be done. Let the music play on. Everybody sing. Everybody dance. Lose yourself in wild romance.”

Guest cast on tonight’s NCIS episode, “Musical Chairs,” features scream queen Emma Bell (SUPERNATURAL, THE WALKING DEAD, DALLAS, FROZEN), Eyas Younis (NCIS: LOS ANGELES), Owen Saxon, Link Ruiz, Eric Winzenried, Kate Hamilton, Richie Rosales and Peg Shirley whose familiar face celebrates her 60th year in the business this year, having made her debut in the 1959 film IMITATION OF LIFE (the version with Lana Turner, John Gavin and Sandra Dee). “Musical Chairs” was written by Kate Torgovnick May and directed by Michael Zinberg.

NCIS airs tonight (November 19) at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS in the U.S. and on Global TV in Canada.

  • Single Parents – “Welcome to Hell, Sickos!”– It’s Halloween night at Hilltop Elementary and the kids head to the school for a spooky celebration with Douglas. Will struggles with whether he should stay with Sophie at the school party or if he should swing by his girlfriend Tracy Freeze’s birthday, which results in a stressful night for Will trying to do both. Past creations include Trumpty Dumpty, EmoJesus, and The Walking Bed, to name a few.
