MANIFEST: Josh Dallas and Melissa Roxburgh Tease Their New Mystery Series

September 24, 2018 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Josh Dallas leaves Prince Charming behind and is turning to MANIFEST, a new NBC mystery series also starring Melissa Roxburgh. The series, created by Jeff Rake, revolves around Montego Air Flight 828. On board the plane are Ben Stone (Dallas), his sister Michaela Stone (Roxburgh), and his son Cal Stone. The three of them caught the flight after their other family members headed home on an earlier flight from their family vacation. But somehow, while in the sky, the plane “disappeared” for more than five years and all of the passengers aboard the plane were presumed dead. No time at all had passed for the people aboard the plane, so when they touch down they find out that their family members mourned them and moved on. Now the Stones aboard the plane have to deal with reuniting with the people who moved on from them, as well as deal with the mystery of what happened to them in the air — and why they can sudden hear voices.

“One of the interesting things about the premise of this show is that we tear a couple of relationships apart and then bring them back together in a way that is incredibly complicated, but without moral culpability,” Rake said. “There are two relationships triangles at the center of the show. There is a marriage in which a wife has understandably moved on. There is a broken engagement in which the fiance has understandably moved on. And now everybody comes back together again. No one is to blame and yet it’s incredibly complicated and affections are torn and the heart is pulled in all of these different directions. And as we launch into series, those who had been left behind are dealing with the consequences of a passage of time — having mourned the loss of lovers, of children, [and then] heeled. [They] moved on with their lives, only to have the past come back in their faces. So that’s half the equation. On the other hand those who were on the plane have had no passage of time. For them it’s been a day and so they come home to this incredible shock to the system where the rest of the world has moved on, loved ones had moved on, but their heart and head are in the same place that they were yesterday.”

As we get deeper into the mystery of the show we’ll learn more about the voices that Ben and Michaela hear. Rake exaplained that what these voices are is “at the heart of the mythology of the show. Has what happened to these people stemmed from something supernatural or has it stemmed from something scientific? Has it stemmed from something divine? And the two heroes of the show — Michaela and Ben, brother and sister — represent the two competing points of view: science versus faith. Josh Dallas’s character, Ben, he’s kind of my Richard Dreyfuss from CLOSE ENCOUNTERS — kind of a scientific mind, digging for answers, tenacious, certain that something earth-bound can explain what happened. On the other hand his sister, Mikayla, she’s kind of a lapsed person of faith. Her mother was incredibly religious, her mother has passed away during the interim when she was on the plane. And so she’s grappling with the loss of her mom, and yet can’t help feeling the spirituality that her mother had tried to infuse in her throughout her life. This science versus faith conversation will play out in the series as they try to search for answers. By the end of our first order, halfway through through hopefully season 1, there will be data points that have come forward that seem to support both schools of thought. And that will be an ever-evolving question in the series.”

In general, the mystery of what happened to the plane and the side-effects for the passengers is part of a show with “one ultimate mystery with an end game that will carry us through the seasons,” Rake hinted. “We are not resetting season to season. The show is not an anthology. This will be one series long novelistic event mystery for the audience to follow. But I think of it as having chapters. There’s an endpoint in chapter 1. In fact there’s an endpoint halfway through season 1 around episode 13 that’s going to give us a significant pivot in our mythology. And then by the time we get to the end of season 1 there will be another pivot point, and then by the time we get into season 2 will have blown open our mythology in a significant way. Another interesting component about the show, which I think will be satisfying for viewers, is that even while the show is a serialized mystery and the relationship drama that obviously inches a long week to week, there will be closed-ended missions, if you will, on a week-to-week basis. So the audience will have an opportunity to kind of enjoy a satisfying closed-ended be story if you will each week even while we are following serialized stories elsewhere in the episodes.”

Ben is a “man of science, he’s a mathematician, so he thinks in concrete answers and he wants the truth,” Dallas says about his character. “This is not a perfect family. This is not a perfect marriage. It’s complex like any kind of family dynamic. Families are complex and there’s always things to navigate. Ben is an obsessive mind, he can get very obsessive and forget about everything else that’s around him and that can cause problems, that can cause friction, that can cause resentment and all those kind of things, [but] there’s still love there.”

One of the things that Ben was very obsessive about before the “accident” was his son’s illness. Ben was obsessed with trying to cure his son, even though his diagnosis was terminal. “When they lands there is a cure for his son that was also developed by another passenger that was on the plane so that’s another mystery that we’re going to have to try to figure out — what is that connection? ”

Dallas explained that “this is a story about very ordinary people in very extraordinary circumstances. It’s about hope, it’s about second shances. [Ben] also has a twin daughter who is now 16 years old, [and] he’s missed out on five and a half years of her life. He’s going to have to try to rediscover her. Try to rediscover his wife and try to figure out what his life is now and try to get it back…if he can ever get it back.”

Roxburgh describes her character as “very strong-willed before and after the [plane ride]. She kind of goes to the beat of her own brum. So she’s Ben’s younger sister and she’s kind of always grown up in the shadow of him, so I think because of that she’s learned to just do things herself and be a bit of a rebel that way.” The clip above shows us Michaela reuniting with her former fiancé, Jared. Roxburgh said that “they did work together in the police force. So obviously that will kind of come together again of them interacting at work. It’s really tragic because I think the two characters really love each other a lot. You don’t expect someone to wait around for 5 years so obviously things have moved on but no love is lost between them, which makes it even harder.” And it complicates things that Jared went on to marry Michaela’s best friend, Lourdes, during the five years that he thought Michaela was missing. “It’s going to be the difficult. I mean as one does when your best friend marries your fiancé. But we’ll see. There might be some redemption there,” Roxburgh hinted.

Expect to see flashbacks for all of the characters — “You’re going to see family life before. You’re going to see family life in the middle. You’re just going to get more of the history, more of the story about who these people are and what makes them so emotionally rich,” Dallas said. Roxburgh also hinted that “we get to meet Lourdes and Mikaela in their happier days.”

Finally, both the government and the noterity of what happened on the plane will continue to “haunt” these characters. “There’s a lot of eyes on this family. There’s a lot of eyes on the passengers that were on the plane. There’s an intrigue. This is an extraordinary thing. Are these people somehow ordained? Are they the chosen ones? Is this some sort of Wormhole? Is this spiritual? There’s a lot of eyes on this family from onlookers, from government entities, there’s a lot of stuff going on and Ben’s going to do his best to try to keep his family as safe as possible, which is going to become very difficult,” Dallas said.

SUPERATURAL Season 13 Out on DVD & Blu-ray Today

September 4, 2018 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Now one of the longest-running series in the United States, SUPERNATURAL will be entering its fourteenth season beginning in October 2018. If you haven’t caught up on season 13 yet — or you’re just a super-fan of the series — you’re going to want to invest in the SUPERNATURAL season 13 DVD or Blu-ray box set, which is out today (September 4).

The thirteenth season of SUPERNATURAL began with the introduction of Jack (Lucifer’s son). The question of whether the boy — who was born as a fully-formed adult — would become evil played out across season 13. Under the tutelage of the Winchester brothers, however, he wanted to become a force for good. The brothers were also dealing with the loss of both Castiel and Mary, both of whom they believed to be dead. But Castiel returned and Sam and Dean also learned that their mother didn’t die, she was merely trapped in an alternate universe where the angels had won the apocalypse. Trapped in there with her were alternate versions of characters previously killed in our reality, including Bobby Singer, Kevin Tran, and Charlie Bradbury.  The quest to save Mary preoccupied the brothers for most of the season, culminating in a showdown with Lucifer and the alternate version of Michael, the archangel.

The DVD and Blu-ray sets of SUPERNATURAL contain a wealth of special features that will interest SUPERNATURAL fans — particularly those who are interested in the behind the scenes details.

  • Deleted Scenes:The box set is littered with short deleted scenes from numerous episodes across the season.
  • Audio Commentary: Two episodes get the audio commentary treatment in the season 13 box set. The first is “Wayward Sisters”, and the second is “Devil’s Bargain”, which features commentary from Jensen Ackles and his real-life wife (and now co-star) Danneel Ackles.
  • The Making of “Scoobynatural”: The SUPERNATURAL producers, the episode’s writer and animators, and SUPERNATURAL actors Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins talk about the making of this special episode. Cameras go behind the scenes into the recording booth where Ackles, Padalecki and Collins are voicing their characters for the episode. It’s fun to see the actors slip into their characters even as they’re just doing voiceovers. The writers of the spade also detail how this idea came to be — starting with an idea pitched years before from one of the writers.
  • Into the Apocalypse: A World Without Winchesters: The SUPERNATURAL writers and producers talk about the introduction of the post-apocalyptic world in season 12. The producers flush out the world, explaining that the world is all about “conquest, and greed and chaos and complete disorder”. And the show’s actors, visual designers, costumer designers, and production designers talk about what it was like to bring the world to life on the series. Fans will get a chance to see the sand pits where the outdoor scenes were actually filmed. You’ll also get a real sense of what goes into production and costume design in a television show, which is always fascinating.
  • The Winchester Mythology: Nature vs. Nurture: This featurette is about the age-old debate of nature versus nurture and is primarily focused on Jack. As Andrew Dabb explains in this featurette, nature versus nurture has been a big theme running through SUPERNATURAL, going back to how Sam might haved turned out in the earlier seasons. Now that debate is focused on Jack. As the spawn of Lucifer, Jack’s fate seems to be to become evil, but when he’s essentially “raised” by the Winchester brothers throughout the season there’s a decent chance for him to become good.
  • Kansas: Carry on Wayward Son: In the summer of 2017, in San Diego, the band Kansas opened up SUPERNATURAL’s annual Comic-Con panel. Their song “Carry on Wayward Son” has become an anthem for the show, playing at the beginning of each season finale, and the band sung it in front of thousands of fans in the famous Hall H at SDCC. Being there, I can tell you that it was quite the experience. But if you didn’t get a chance to see it live then you can watch the performance on the box set.
  • Supernatural: 2017 Comic-Con Panel: Like on past box sets, you can see the previous year’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, featuring the show’s writers and actors.
  • Gag Reel: Saving the best for last, SUPERNATURAL’s gag reel is the stuff of legend, producing giggles thanks to this talented — and amusing — cast.

Pick up your own copy of the SUPERNATURAL Season 13 DVD and Blu-ray from Amazon. Digital versions of the season is available from various retailers including Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, PlayStation, Vudu, Xbox and others. A Digital Copy is also included with the purchase of specially marked Blu-ray discs for redemption and cloud storage.

RIVERDALE Season 3 Preview: Cults, Prison and New Romances

August 29, 2018 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Archie Andrews was arrested at the end of RIVERDALE’s second season, thanks to Hiram Lodge who wanted to keep the teen from interfering with his plans. And he will be charged with murder, which means he has an uphill battle to regain his freedom, particularly with a man like Hiram pulling the strings. In a preview from the upcoming third season, we see Archie being carted off to prison.  How long he’ll be behind bars remains to be seen, but it’s clear he won’t be spending most of his time behind prison (he will, however, be spouting a new tattoo).

And there’s plenty of trouble coming to town. Veronica is trying to convince her father that he’ll never break her and Archie up, Alice is sleeping with FP and Betty is dealing with some sort of cult — one that appears to have supernatural undertones.

RIVERDAL returns for its third season on Wednesday, October 10 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

Amazon Studios at TCA: THE ROMANOFFS Premiere Date, LORD OF THE RINGS Writers and More

July 29, 2018 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Amazon Studios attended the bi-annual Television Critics Association panel yesterday and presented a slew of news about their new and upcoming series.

The streaming service announced that it was partnering with the Russo Brothers’ AGBO Studios (the brothers behind the recent Marvel Avengers films) on a large-scale international event series. “The Russo Brothers have impacted the pop culture barometer of creative excellence with their vision for both Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “They brought a level of scale and execution to those films that has raised the bar for audiences everywhere and we can’t wait for them to do the same for us on this project for our Amazon Prime Customer. We are thrilled to be working with Joe and Anthony Russo and their AGBO Studios as they build this incredible, multifaceted, international franchise.” There’s no real details on the series at this time, but we do know the original series will serve as the starting point for multiple original local production series around the world.

In addition, Amazon announced that JD Payne and Patrick McKay (STAR TREK 4) have been hired to develop and write the company’s high-profile and expensive LORD OF THE RINGS series. “The rich world that J.R.R. Tolkien created is filled with majesty and heart, wisdom and complexity,” Payne & McKay said. “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Amazon to bring it to life anew. We feel like Frodo, setting out from the Shire, with a great responsibility in our care — it is the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime.”

The studio also announced the premiere date for THE ROMANOFFS, which marks Matthew Weiner’s first series since the end of MAD MEN. The show is a contemporary anthology series that takes place across the world and focuses on 8 separate stories about people who believe they are descendants of the Russian royal family. It will premiere on October 12 on Amazon Prime and has a stellar, extensive cast, as you can see from the teaser video below.

SNEAKY PETE, the Amazon show starring Giovanni Ribisi, was also picked up for a third season. Blake Masters will be taking on the duties of showrunner for the new season.

Amazon also announced the ordering of a few new shows, including UPLOAD, a half-hour sci-fi romantic satire led by Greg Daniels (PARKS AND REC). Starring Andy Allo and Robbie Amell, the 10 episode series will premiere globally on Amazon Prime.

Meanwhile, THEM, a new series from Lena Waithe (DEAR WHITE PEOPLE) and Little Marvin, was given a two-season order from the streaming service. It will be presented as an anthology series, with the first season titled THEM: COVENANT and set in 1953. The show centers around a couple that move to an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles where forces both real and supernatural try to destroy them.

Finally, Amazon also picked up THE EXPATRIATES (based on the book of the same name), a new series from Nicole Kidman’s production company. “After announcing our recent first look deal with Nicole and Blossom Films, we are thrilled to kick off this relationship by bringing this very popular novel from author Janice Y.K. Lee to Prime Video,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “The story weaves an addictive tapestry that follows a group of complex women and their lives as outsiders in Hong Kong. It’s a compelling exploration of the strength of these women as they persevere through struggles with marriage, career, parenting and unimaginable loss.”
