The CW President Talks WAYWARD SISTERS, Diversity, Sunday Night Programming and More

May 17, 2018 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

After announcing its 2018-2019 primetime schedule and the upcoming final seasons of iZOMBIE, JANE THE VIRGIN and CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND, CW President Mark Pedowitz spoke to reporters about the upcoming season.

One big question was the network’s decision to pass on WAYWARD SISTERS, the second attempt at a SUPERNATURAL spin-off. The show was presented as a backdoor pilot this past season of SUPERNATURAL, but the network didn’t ultimately order it to series. According to Pedowitz, they had a lot of great material to choose from for the new season and they’re really excited about the shows they did pick up. He said “we are big fans of the characters [of WAYWARD SISTERS] and the women who played those characters. But we did not feel cratively that the show was where we wanted it to be. And we felt we had a better shot with [ORIGINALS spinoff] LEGACIES.” Pedowitz added that they will likely have conversations with SUPERNATURAL’s showrunners after the Upfronts about whether they can repurpose this show or if they’ll go another route in the future for another possible spin-off attempt.

Pedowitz also highlighted the show’s diversity statistics for the new season — he stated that 30 of the 37 regular actors on their various shows are all women or minorities and highlighted the fact that all five of their new series have female writers/executive producers.

The CW is also opening up Sunday nights on its schedule — a move that Pedowitz said was a sign of confidence in the network on the part of their affiliates and parent companies. In order to be a contender on Sunday nights they opted to pair SUPERGIRL with a new reiteration of CHARMED. They felt that these were two shows with empowered females and believe that this duo will be strong contenders for Sunday nights. With respect to CHARMED, the original cast doesn’t seem happy about this reboot. Pedowitz said that he hoped fans would give the new show and new cast a chance to stand on its own. There’s some similarities with the new show, but it’s not quite the same as the original CHARMED — it’s been “somewhat reimagined”.

One reporter also asked about the possibility that The CW might have had discussions to pick up LUCIFER — a show recently cancelled by Fox that fans are trying to save. Pedowitz indicated that they have had no discussions about LUCIFER and are focused on their own development. So if LUCIFER gets a reprieve, it won’t be coming from The CW.

CW Picks Up ALL AMERICAN, IN THE DARK, CHARMED, ROSWELL & ORIGINALS Spin-off; Renews iZOMBIE

May 11, 2018 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

The CW has announced five pick-ups for the 2018-2019 season after renewing more than 10 of its existing shows.

ALL AMERICAN, from uber-producer Greg Berlanti, is inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger. The series focuses on Spencer Janes, a rising high school player from South L.A. who is recruited to play for Beverly Hills High.

IN THE DARK focuses on a young woman named Murphy who is blind and also happens to be the only “witness” to the murder of her friend, Tyson. Since Tyson is a drug dealer and the police can’t find a body, no one really believes Murphy when she insists he’s dead. But she sets out with her guide dog to prove that something happened to her friend.

The CHARMED reboot was created by Jennie Urman (JANE THE VIRGIN) and focuses on three sisters who are from a family of witches. The original CHARMED ran for eight seasons on the WB (now The CW).

ROSWELL NEW MEXICO, also a reboot from a WB show, focuses on a girl who lives in Roswell, New Mexico and is shocked when a few people she knows turn out to be aliens. While the original series centered around a group of high school kids, the reboot focuses on Liz Ortecho, a biomedical engineer who is the daughter of undocumented immigrants. She returns home to Roswell to help out her father and discovers that a boy she knew in high school is an alien.

The ORIGINALS spin-off, titled LEGACIES, focuses on Hope, Klaus and Hayley’s daughter. Danielle Rose Russell, who took over as a teenage version of Hope in the final season of THE ORIGINALS, will be joined by Matt Davis, who played Alaric Saltzman on THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.

The network has also opted not to pick up the potential SUPERNATURAL spin-off WAYWARD SISTERS, according to its creator Robert Berens.

Finally, the network also opted to renew iZOMBIE for a fifth season.

VALOR Cancelled at The CW

May 8, 2018 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Following the news that freshman drama series LIFE SENTENCE was cancelled, The CW also opted to cancel the freshman military drama VALOR. VALOR starred Matt Barr (One Tree Hill, Sleepy Hollow) and Christina Ochoa (Blood Drive) as co-pilots caught up in a conspiracy.

VALOR and LIFE SENTENCE are two of four shows that debuted in the 2017-2018 on The CW. The other two series — DYNASTY and BLACK LIGHTNING – were both renewed for a second season. Currently only the fate of iZOMBIE is oustanding.

As Upfronts week approaches, we should soon learn about The CW’s new pilot pick-ups — they have nine shows in contention for the 2018-2019 season and will be expanding programming to Sunday nights starting in the fall.

Follow along with all of the network show renewals and cancellations at our handy renwal/cancellation masterpost.
