Rob Benedict and Richard Speight, Jr.’s KINGS OF CON Debuts Today

November 15, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

kings-of-con

If you’re a SUPERNATURAL fan you probably know about the show’s conventions. Held across the US and Canada (as well as in a few other countries around the world), the conventions bring fans together and give them an opportunity to see their favorite actors and actresses from the show.

Rob Benedict (Chuck/God) and Richard Speight, Jr. (Trickster/Gabriel) are recurring guest stars on SUPERNATURAL and they’re also regulars on the show’s con circuit. Speight serves as the emcee for most conventions, while Benedict is a panel member and leader of the house band, Loudain Swain. The pair’s repeated convention experiences inspired them to create a new series called KING OF CONS.

Originally funded through Kickstarter, the show is a single camera comedy starring Benedict, Speight and a slew of well-known SUPERNATURAL faces. Speight is Rich, a thrice-divorced former actor who enjoys the faux fame he experiences at the hands of a gaggle fans who still think he matters. Benedict is Rob, a a divorcee-to-be who is back on the circuit to cover the costs of his failed marriage and stalled career.

The show follows the pair as they travel from convention to convention, desperately trying to hang on to their fame.

KINGS OF CON is available in the U.S. on Comic-Con HQ. The first two episodes will drop today, followed by a new episode every Tuesday until the end of the season. There will also be a live aftershow every week.

Speight and Benedict also announced that some international viewers will be able to watch the show as well. According to the show’s Facebook page, viewers in the UK, Canada, Australia and Germany can watch the show via iTunes, Google, Playstation, Xbox, Vimeo and Amazon. Check their page for more details.

LUCIFER Post-Mortem: The Cast Talks Dan and Lucifer’s New Bond, the Improv Group & What’s Next for Linda

November 7, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

lucifer

Chloe dealt with the pain of her father’s old murder, Dan and Lucifer bonded, and Maze found herself with a new job on this week’s LUCIFER. As Chloe investigated the murder of her father’s killer (which eventually led her to a conspiracy), Lucifer turned his attention to Dan. Convinced that he only drove people away after showing Linda his true face, Lucifer decided he wanted to be more normal and concluded that “Detective Douche” was the most normal person he could emulate. By the end of the episode, Lucifer and Dan had forged a tentative friendship, Maze had gotten herself a job as a bounty hunter, and Linda and Maze patched things up, despite Lucifer’s revelation to his therapist last week about his true identity.

During a recent visit to the set of LUCIFER in Vancouver*, the cast sat down to talk to journalists about Dan’s new hobby, where Dan and Lucifer go from here, and how Linda’s horror about Lucifer will turn into something else.

The Improv Group. Perhaps the most amusing part of an otherwise serious episode was Lucifer’s discovery that Dan had joined an improv group — and was using it as an opportunity to act like Lucifer. Kevin Alejandro (Dan) said he was surprised by Dan’s new hobby. “[The producers were like] ‘we’re going to give you some sort of talent, some sort of secret thing that we want you to do’ and I was like ‘ok, they’re going to turn me into a secret tap dancer or something like that’. And then it comes out as [an improv group] and it kind of makes sense, you know? As you know, I’ve played a lot of cops throughout the years and a lot of police officers do take improv classes because they have — especially the ones that go undercover and stuff like that — because they have to learn how to just sort of have the gift of the gab. I don’t know how much more you’re going to see, but it’s definitely one of his little things now….. It’s a form of therapy for him. It’s a way to sort of deal with, you know, the next phase in he and Chloe’s and Trixie’s life. And instead of going to a therapist, he just sort of uses that outlet. I think the audience will appreciate that. We all try to find a way to express ourselves and that’s just his.”

Dan At Work. After his actions in season 1 of LUCIFER landed him a demotion, Alejandro explained that Dan is willing to be the department’s lacky….as long as he has a chance to prove himself again. We’ve seen him do this throughout the early episodes of season 2 and it will continue in the future: “One of the cool things about this character in general is that he does thrive to be the best. So he’s going to do whatever he can to be the top again. So that’s why he’s — for lack of a better word — everyone’s bitch in the department. He will go and work on any other case just to get to the top. But he’s also flawed and, again, he makes decisions throughout this season that are for morally the right reasons but technically the wrong way to do it. He’s definitely so flawed. He can’t catch a break, basically, is what you’ll learn to realize a bit more….. I think because of the choices that he’s made he can definitely be persuaded to go down the wrong path. To go down a dark path. But morally he wants to do the right thing.”

Becoming Friends? Meanwhile, both Dan and Lucifer’s actions in the most recent episode means that their relationship is “slowly thawing, I think is the best way of putting it,” Tom Ellis (Lucifer) hinted. “Until [this week’s] episode I don’t think Lucifer had ever put himself in Dan’s shoes. And I don’t mean, like, metaphorically. It’s not like Lucifer to do that — to emphasize, to think from someone else’s point of view. Certainly with Dan, you know, he’d made up his mind about him and that was his point of fun and this person really didn’t have an awful lot of validity in Lucifer’s eyes. But through the episode, Lucifer gets to experience the reality of Dan and Dan’s life. And I think that, kind of, lands on him a little bit. And then he spends the next episode trying desperately not to call him ‘douche’, but it’s almost like a reflex action for him…… As part of kind of Lucifer’s humanization, it’s another kind of layer stripped away when he has this sort of realization with Dan that Dan is someone who has his struggles in life and he isn’t this perfect, nice guy. Fundamentally, everyone is flawed. And for that to be pointed out to Lucifer — for him to get a grasp of that situation — really helps thaw that relationship.”

Returning to Therapy. Lucifer’s last session with Linda may have ended in disaster, but their professional relationship is far from over. In fact, according to Ellis, the “immediate sort of fall out is that Lucifer, being Lucifer, goes back to therapy with Linda assuming it will be alright to not talk about the elephant in the room. And, of course, you know, that doesn’t work out. He realizes that this revelation to Linda has sort of created this kind of babbling lunatic. And he finds himself in [a future episode] becoming the therapist almost and she becomes the person in therapy and it’s quite a fun sort of thing that we have with that.” Ellis also explained that “I think he believes he can trust that information with Linda and it won’t go any further. But I don’t think he really has thought through what the repercussions are for her personally about that revelation. Again, like all things with Lucifer, it comes from a very selfish point of view.”

Maze’s New Job. Maze may have finally discovered her purpose on earth which, apparently, is being a bounty hunter. And this will be an opportunity to get her into the field more with the cases of the week. Lesley-Ann Brandt (Maze) explained that “It’s a fun job for Maze because I think she’s found her new purpose, you know, it’s like ‘hey, if I’m stuck on earth and I can’t torture like the demon I am, and how can I hunt’ — which is essentially like what the  bounty is like for her. Any person who gets a new job that they’re really good at — she’s very proud to be able to bring bad guys in. Her new job is also “sort of a way to seed her into one of the scenes with Dan and Chloe and Lucifer and the police. She’s not all of a sudden helping the cops, do you know what I mean? This is for her personally. She gets paid. She doesn’t really care if the guy’s done a horrible thing — she’s, like, ‘I have fun, I get to hunt human beings and bring them in’. It makes me feel like my old self.”

Maze and Linda. Despite the troubles these two women had in this episode, there is hope on the horizon for their friendship. Brant explained that “I think that it takes an adjustment and it takes time to understand the idea……It’s a fun friendship. At the end of the day, if you take the supernatural element out of it, it’s two friends who had, like, a stumble in their friendship and they’re trying — but they care about each other — so they’re trying to work through it as best as they can with whatever tools they have. And I think if you’re going to try and like work through something, a therapist is probably the best person you can befriend in order to do that.”

Don’t miss an all new episode of LUCIFER on November 14 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox (U.S.) and CTV (Canada).

(Note about the video below: the interviews took place the week of October 30, so when someone asks about “next week’s episode” they are referring to the November 7 episode)

SUPERGIRL Season 2 Premiere Preview: Just Cuz

Faster than a speeding bullet, SUPERGIRL producers are bringing Kara’s cousin, Superman, to National City to help the Girl of Steel kick off her first season of new episodes on The CW.

Tyler Hoechlin (TEEN WOLF, 7TH HEAVEN) brings the affability and winning smile of Superman back to the DCverse in the vein of Dean Cain and Christopher Reeve, as well as the endearing klutziness of Brandon Routh’s take on Clark Kent.

(I am so looking forward to Hoechlin and Routh, as Atom, running into each other sometime this season and exchanging “the look.”)

Season 2 starts off with a bang as The Venture Spaceship veers off course and seems set to explode. As Supergirl rushes to prevent the impending crash, Superman flies in from Metropolis to lend a hand.

The addition of Superman as a recurring guest star seems to be one of many changes as SUPERGIRL makes its move to The CW. On a separate Earth when the series was on CBS, will the Flashpoint effect be the reason that worlds will collide?

Maybe. Expect to see Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), Lex’s sister, who has been many things in print…an infant, a telepath, an invalid, a computer simulation, et al. She appears NOT to be who she was in SMALLVILLE…Tess Mercer, a corporate mogul and an amalgam of Lena Luthor and Eve Teschmacher from the Christopher Reeve Superman films.

Lena may be a corporate mogul in SUPERGIRL, but Eve Teschmacher, is rumored to be Cat Grant’s new put-upon assistant. Played by Andrea Brooks of SUPERNATURAL’s “LARP and the Real Girl” and “No Exit,” poor Eve may wish she were back among the monsters.

More Superman/Supergirl characters will be on the canvas this season, some of whom are in tonight’s episode.

John Corben (guest star Frederick Schmidt) is in the credits, and as fans know, John Corben is the name of supervillain, Metallo, before his transformation. A bank robber, a war reporter, a killer or a super-soldier, which “Metallo” will show up in National City?

Chris Wood ditches his crazy-train Kai persona from THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and is cast as Mon-El. Another character with multiple versions, Mon-El could be a relative, a space fugitive saved by Jor-El before Krypton exploded, a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, a member of the Green Lantern Corps, or a combo of those and his several other iterations.

COUGAR TOWN’s Ian Gomez is slated as Snapper Carr of Justice League fame. Speculation is that he will take over the day-to-day management of CatCo to accommodate Calista Flockhart’s choice to become recurring when the show moved base to Vancouver for Season 2.

Perhaps the most anticipated newcomer to SUPERGIRL is the President of the United States. No, not that one. The new President is none other than WONDER WOMAN, Lynda Carter…a choice that could rally all political parties.

More rumored changes: James (Mehcad Brooks) and Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) relationship will change and Winn (Jeremy Jordan) may get a new job offer from Hank (David Harewood).

Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima) will debut as an NCPD detective instead of being a member of the Science Police. Alex (Chyler Leigh) will struggle to find her fit in the new dynamic when Clark is in town, and Kara finally will get her promotion to reporter.

Season 2 of SUPERGIRL premieres tonight (October 10) at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW (instead of CBS).

Check out the clip below for a preview and sneak peek of tonight’s episode and an extended version of the Superhero Fight Club featuring characters from SUPERGIRL, THE FLASH, ARROW and LEGENDS OF TOMORROW (The CW’s 8:00pm lineup Mondays-Thursdays).

Five Things You Need to Know About NBC’s TIMELESS

September 29, 2016 By Tina Charles Leave a Comment

TIMELESS

This fall NBC delivers a time-travel series that comes courtesy of a couple of powerhouse executive producers: Eric Kripke of SUPERNATURAL and REVOLUTION fame, and Shawn Ryan, best known for creating THE SHIELD.

This all-star team-up is about to give birth to TIMELESS, an epic, character-driven, sci-fi drama that sends characters hurtling through different periods in history and focuses on them dealing with the consequences of their actions while in those various eras.

The show’s imminent arrival happens when there’s a plethora of time-travel options airing year-round including 12 MONKEYS, OUTLANDER, DOCTOR WHO, DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, THE FLASH, and the newbies headed to the small screen this fall, the CW’s FREQUENCY and ABC’s TIME AFTER TIME.

TIMELESS will have to go above and beyond in order to stand out from the crowd. It’s clear after conversing with Kripke at the recent Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour that he feels his thriller has what it takes.

When we caught up with him, he talked about the two time-travel shows that influenced the creation of TIMELESS, gushed about the new cast carrying out his and his co-EP’s master plan, and discussed the pressures of adhering to the rules of the time-travel game.

Two late great series influenced Kripke’s love of time travel. “QUANTUM LEAP is one I say often,” says Kripke. “Because it was fun and it was really based on characters that have a lot of heart. The one I don’t bring up very much is VOYAGERS!, which was Jon-Erik Hexum and Meeno Peluce.”

VOYAGERS! aired for one season on NBC and debuted in 1982. “I loved that show when I was a kid,” he continues. “What I loved about VOYAGERS! was that they traveled through a different time period pretty much every episode. And they had a drive to really try to get some history into the show. Like they would be on the Titanic and then they would meet Thomas Edison and that always struck me.”

Expect TIMELESS to have all of that and more. “To be able to do sort of a modern, sophisticated, edgier version of that show, it sort of brings me great pleasure,” he explains. “Like the not so secret secret of SUPERNATURAL is it’s basically DUKES OF HAZZARD or KNIGHT RIDER, just kind of updated for modern audiences. And so, in my own way, this is QUANTUM LEAP and VOYAGER updated for modern audiences.”

There are plenty of opportunities for Kripke-Universe alums to guest star. Kripke has gone on record saying he’d love his SUPERNATURAL family to guest star including Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins and JIm Beaver.

Another guest star resource is his previous NBC series, REVOLUTION. “For sure I would get Tracy [Spiridakos] and Billy [Burke] and Liz [Mitchell} on the show as quickly as I could.”

As far as the EP is concerned, TIMELESS will be the gift that keeps on giving. “The one thing I love about TIMELESS is there’s all these great opportunities for these amazing guest stars, these characters in history you don’t really know and we’re really working hard to give them really fleshed out interesting stories and characters.”

Kripke feels he’s struck gold with his cast of regulars. The TIMELESS cast is chock full of familiar faces. There’s RECTIFY and SUITS star Abigail Spencer, 90210’s Matt Lanter, BETTER OFF TED’s Malcolm Barrett and ER’s Dr. Luka Kovac a.k.a. Goran Visnjic.

Kripke knows the SUPERNATURAL cast he assembled is something special. He thinks this is a lightning-strikes-twice situation. “I’m really happy with these actors. Abigail Spencer is off-the-hook good. Like mind-blowingly deep and complicated. Matt Lanter and Malcolm Barrett are killing it and they’re so fun together.”

He says the chemistry with the trio is already evident. “They all give such nuanced and complicated performances. I was just talking to Shawn Ryan the other day about it. We shot this thing…we took over the entire backlot and built an entire 1865 street, which is insane.”

“We have all these crane shots and horses and 150 costumed extras,” he continues. “He said what did you think of the dailies? And I said, they’re great. They’re visuals. But, honestly, my favorite takes of that day were the close-ups of the three actors communicating with each other. They’re so charming and they’re so interesting together. Thank God.”

This world will have rules when it comes to time travel. Time travel on TV can be a tricky, tricky thing. If the rules don’t make sense, viewers get vocal. So the pressure is real. “We spend an incredible amount of time making sure that we’ve got our rules straight and that our universe is consistent and we spend as much time not telling those rules to the audience,” explains Kripke.

The aim is to limit the headaches that erupt when dealing with all things timey-wimey. “We want this to be a fun show. For instance, I’ll watch STAR WARS and they don’t spend much time explaining the rules in STAR WARS. There’s an opening crawl and that’s it. But there’s an incredible internal consistency and you just feel that you’re in a coherent universe. That’s really our goal here which is we want the show to be simple and fun.”

One rule: the TIMELESS characters won’t be able to travel within their own timelines. This means they can’t directly go back and fix their own mistakes or wrong turns. “Garcia Flynn…we’re playing Goran as probably about 40 or so early 40s, so about mid-’70s is about as late as we can travel on the show. Certainly for now.”

If this rule ever changes, it won’t happen without a lot of thought and debate. “Believe me, what’s happening under the surface of that is an incredible amount of discussion and conversation to make sure that we’re making a credible and valid world for the audience to get lost in.”

SUPERNATURAL fans will be rewarded for tuning into TIMELESS. According to Kripke, his new series will feature some Easter eggs that will appeal to the SPN Family including the use of fun aliases and, once again, utilizing January 24 as the birthdate of one of the characters. “There are actually a few SUPERNATURAL references all over the pilot. It’s like this little game I play with the fans.”

He also says to expect similarities that are more big picture in nature. “One of the biggest things I think SUPERNATURAL fans will respond to is, in many ways, the thematic is similar. Ultimately, TIMELESS is a show about whether there is fate or free will.”

“If you could go back and change history, should you? Or is there a flow to the way history is supposed to go. And so what universe do we live in? Do we live in an ordered one? Or do we live in a random and chaotic one where you could go back and change history and what difference does it make? So that’s an argument that the characters in our show have.”

“To me, the fun of making a time travel show is, yes, you get to travel to these amazing periods in history and you get to meet these amazing characters but you also get to have deeper, make deeper, philosophical points,” he goes on to explain. “And that’s certainly something that I loved to do in SUPERNATURAL and we’re certainly doing that in TIMELESS.”

TIMELESS takes off Monday, October 3 at 10/9c on NBC (U.S.) and Global (Canada).
