Tower Records was once a retail powerhouse with two hundred stores, in thirty countries, on five continents. From humble beginnings in a small-town drugstore, Tower Records eventually became the heart and soul of the music world, and a powerful force in the music industry. In 1999, Tower Records made $1 billion. In 2006, the company filed for bankruptcy. Everyone thinks they know what killed Tower Records: the Internet. But that’s not the story. This feature documentary film examines this iconic company’s explosive trajectory, tragic demise, and legacy forged by its rebellious founder Russ Solomon. Directed by Colin Hanks (FARGO), features interviews with Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl, Elton John, Chuck D, and David Geffen.

Cultures around the world are obsessed with size: Women equate height with sex appeal. Society is stuck on the belief that tall people make the best leaders and that tall men deserve more money. Shot in the U.S., Canada, China, and Europe, the documentary speaks to men from all walks of life to unearth what makes some short men bigger than others.

LAUGHOLOGY – *PREMIERE* (Documentaries)
Laughter Yoga, Laughter Parties, “Laughercize” and other laughter oriented health trends have spawned a new approach to laughter. It involves using laughter to make people laugh instead of jokes. SINATRA: ALL OR NOTHING AT ALL – *PREMIERE* (Documentaries/Music/HBO)
An up-close and personal examination of the life, music, and career of the legendary entertainer. Told in his own words from hours of archived interviews, along with commentary from those closest to him, the documentary weaves the music and images from Sinatra’s life together with rarely-seen footage of Sinatra’s famous 1971 “Retirement Concert” in Los Angeles. The film’s narrative is shaped by Sinatra’s song choices for that concert, which director Alex Gibney (Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine) interprets as the singer’s personal guide through his own life.

ERIC CLAPTON: PLANES, TRAINS & ERIC – *PREMIERE* (Documentaries/Music)
Eric Clapton is one of the most revered and influential guitarists of all time. From his early days with the Yardbirds, through John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek And The Dominos, and on to his solo career, he has had consistent critical and commercial success. This documentary follows Eric Clapton and his band on the Far and Middle Eastern leg of his 2014 World Tour. WHY? WITH HANNIBAL BURESS – Season 1 – *PREMIERE* (Stand-Up Comedy/Comedies)
Viewers get a glimpse into the offbeat mind of this laid-back comedian. Each episode tackles topical issues with sketches, man-on-the-street interviews, and special guests as well as stand-up in front of a studio audience. If it’s in the zeitgeist, Buress will dissect it – and he’ll finally get answers to all his burning questions.

GOLD RUSH – Season 3 – *PREMIERE* (Discovery/Reality TV)
It took two years, but the competing gold mining crews have made it to the big leagues. BEING EVEL – *PREMIERE* (Documentaries/Sports)
BEING EVEL tells not just the incredible story behind the myth of 1970s American daredevil icon and pioneer for today’s extreme sports scene Robert “Evel” Knievel, but also the previously untold and very much darker tale of the man behind the flamboyant cape; a one-time outlaw whose wildly dangerous career spanned 75 ramp-to-ramp motorbike jumps and saw him break every bone in his body.

Sunday, April 10

10 p.m. – BILLIONS – Season 1 Finale
Hall (Terry Kinney, BLACK BOX) informs Axe that Chuck has new evidence against him that could land him in prison. As Lara makes plans for the Axelrod family to flee the country, Axe accuses Wendy of leaking the info to Chuck. A defiant Wendy realizes how far Chuck has gone in his pursuit of Axe and threatens to expose him. With his marriage and career in peril, Chuck is forced to take actions that further his rift with Connerty. Having sacrificed so much to this case – including possibly his marriage – Chuck finds Axe for an explosive confrontation.

Monday, April 11

MOTIVE – Season 4, Episode 4 – (Crime & Mystery Collection/Dramas Collection/All-Canadian)
Detectives Angie Flynn and Paula Mazur have their personal boundaries tested when Angie notices Paula trying to ignore personal issues during their investigation of the murder of an ex-con who may have returned to a life of crime. Meanwhile, Staff Sergeant Oscar Vega (Louis Ferreira, BREAKING BAD) and Dr. Betty Rogers attempt to have a seemingly normal morning until work snaps them back to reality. Detective Brian Lucas finds himself attracted to one of the witnesses in the case and must decide if he’s willing to cross a line.

Friday, April 15

DARK NET – Season 1 – *PREMIERE* (Documentaries/SHOWTIME)
This eight-part docu-series explores the netherworld where virtual and physical lives collide in ways surprising, disturbing, and seemingly inevitable. In contrast to much of the mainstream media, DARK NET reveals a more ominous and disturbing perspective of a digitally connected world where every action is collected and stored. The series is developed and produced by Vocativ, a technology and media company that applies exclusive proprietary technology to search and monitor the deep web, the 80 percent of the internet that lies beyond the reach of regular search engines.

T.J. MILLER: NO REAL REASON – *PREMIERE* (Stand-Up Comedy/Comedies)
For viewers who like explosions of fun and a sense of danger at every moment, then T.J. Miller (SILLICON VALLEY) is the comic to watch. He touches on such topics as holding eye contact while puking, being a social outcast because of his wee-wee, and robot dancing.

LOOKING – Season 1 & 2 – *PREMIERE* (Comedies/Dramas/HBO)
The series revolves around three friends in San Francisco who explore the fun and sometimes overwhelming options available to a new generation of gay men. Created by Michael Lannan and executive produced by Andrew Haigh (Weekend) and Sarah Condon (BORED TO DEATH), the show stars Jonathan Groff (GLEE), Frankie J. Alvarez (SMASH), and Murray Bartlett (August).

Monday, April 18

MOTIVE – Season 4, Episode 5 – (Crime & Mystery Collection/Dramas Collection/All-Canadian)
Detective Angie Flynn and the team are called to investigate a gruesome murder, but when the signature appears to be the same as a case Detective Paula Mazur previously investigated, it could mean an innocent woman was convicted of a crime she didn’t commit. While Angie and Paula investigate different leads, Staff Sergeant Oscar Vega must mediate without playing favourites while Detective Brian Lucas plays the diplomat trying to support both.

Wednesday, April 20

THE UP IN SMOKE TOUR – *PREMIERE* (Music)

DEADBEAT – Season 3 – *PREMIERE* (Sitcoms/Sci-Fi & Fantasy/Comedies)
DEADBEAT is a supernatural comedy series about a stoner and a medium-for-hire who work together to try to solve various unresolved issues of ghosts. Created by Cody Heller and Brett Konner, the series stars Tyler Labine (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) as a pot-smoking lazy bum, and Kevin Pacalioglu (HARRY AND HENDERSONS) as a part-time paranormal consultant who makes a living communicating with the dead, DEADBEAT is hilarious portrayal of two ordinary guys helping ghosts settle their unfinished business on earth.

Friday, April 22

PROPHET’S PREY – *PREMIERE* (Documentaries/SHOWTIME)

Friday, April 29

KILLJOYS – Season 1 – *PREMIERE* (Dramas/Sci-Fi & Fantasy)

Killjoys must follow strict rules, and there are harsh consequences for veering from their mantra: “The Warrant is All”. Her partner, John the Bastard, is a peacemaker who hates conflict.

THE COMEBACK – Season 1 & 2 – *PREMIERE* (Comedies/Sitcoms/HBO)
THE COMEBACK follows Valerie Cherish (Lisa Kudrow, FRIENDS), fading TV “It Girl” and pioneer of reality television who was once so desperate to stay in the spotlight that she allowed cameras to follow her every move as she appeared on a new sitcom, with disastrous results. Also stars Malin Ackerman (BILLIONS).

ARROW Sneak Peek: How Do You Mend A Broken Heart?

March 23, 2016 By Melissa Smith Leave a Comment

ARROW photo 416 s4e16 Broken Hearts copy

Poor Oliver Queen.  ARROW continues to be his own worst enemy.

First, Felicity finds out that her fiancé has been lying to her about his son.

Then, Dahrk (guest star Neil McDonough) puts Green Arrow, Speedy (Willa Holland) and Black Canary (Katie Cassidy) in a magical chokehold in front of William, who has been abducted by Dahrk.

That danger prompts Oliver (Stephen Amell) to send William and Samantha away to a place where he cannot find them.

The secrets and lies have become too much for Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) who returns her engagement ring just before she is able to walk again.

Now, ARROW’s #1 crazy fan, Cupid (guest star Amy Gumenick, also known as SUPERNATURAL’s Young Mary Winchester) is back in Star City.

The character, created by ARROW Executive Producer, Andrew Kreisberg, during his stint on the print version of Green Arrow at DC Comics, makes her fourth appearance on ARROW tonight.

Despite being recruited to the SUICIDE SQUAD by Amanda Waller, Cupid aka Carrie Cutter, still harbors feelings for Green Arrow.

Although her time with the SUICIDE SQUAD has given her purpose and a feeling of teamwork, her continuing disappointment with romance has changed her faith in love.

It is a sad day when Cupid stops believing in love, and even more dangerous when she sets out to destroy the happily-ever-after of celebrity couples by killing them on their wedding day.

Could Cupid really believe that death is the only way to save someone from love?

To stop the raging redhead, and despite their recent breakup, Oliver and Felicity stage a fake wedding (as seen in those faux wedding photos) and set themselves up as bait to capture a crazy Cupid.

What possibly could go wrong with that scenario?

ARROW also stars David Ramsey, John Barrowman and Paul Blackthorne.  Additional guest stars on tonight’s episode, “Broken Hearts,” include Dani Alvarado and Preston Vanderslice.

“Broken Hearts” was written by Rebecca Bellotto & Nolan Dunbar and directed by the fabulous John F. Showalter.  (Rumor is that the “F” actually stands for “Fabulous.”)

ARROW airs tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW and on CTV in Canada.

NCIS Sneak Peeks: Brother, Can You Spare A Dime?

March 22, 2016 By Melissa Smith Leave a Comment

NCIS photo s13e18 Reasonable Doubts

The question plaguing NCIS producers may have been how to follow up last week’s fabulous milestone 300th episode with something exceptional.

The answer?  The always-debonair Robert Wagner.

Returning tonight as Anthony DiNozzo, Sr., Wagner has a chance to reprise his role as Tony’s dad before Junior’s portrayer, Michael Weatherly, exits the show later this season.

When Senior’s life becomes a bit boring, he decides to take on a project.  His first thought is to pitch in at NCIS, but then fate intervenes.  A homeless woman approaches him and claims to be his daughter.

Gibbs (Mark Harmon) urges Senior to determine if the woman is, indeed, his daughter, and the elder DiNozzo asks his son for help.

Meanwhile, the NCIS team is involved in a case of a slain Navy Public Affairs officer who has been shot twice.  The wife and the mistress both are suspects, and each is accusing the other of murdering the man that she loves.

Is this a case of “she said, she said” or are the women trying to give each other an alibi for killing the cheating officer?  In a court of law, a jury cannot convict if the prosecution does not offer proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused is the only person who committed the crime.

Two shots and two suspects could negate that burden of proof.

Tonight’s episode, “Reasonable Doubts,” was written by Executive Producers, George Schenck and Frank Cardea.

And for those who enjoy a great inside joke, Trivial Pursuit or the “Six Degrees Of Kevin Bacon” game…

Schenck and Cardea produced a television series, HACK, with Bob Singer and Phil Sgriccia (both of SUPERNATURAL).

Singer and Sgriccia produced a show called REASONABLE DOUBTS, which…wait for it…also starred Mark Harmon.

Sgriccia also worked on MAX HEADROOM with tonight’s director, Tom Wright.

To my knowledge, none of the above actually has worked with Kevin Bacon yet, but Singer, Sgriccia and Wright all directed SMALLVILLE, which co-starrred Aaron Ashmore, twin brother of Shawn Ashmore on Bacon’s series, THE FOLLOWING.

NCIS also stars Pauley Perrette, Sean Murray, Rocky Carroll, Brian Dietzen, Emily Wickersham and David McCallum.

NCIS airs tonight at 8:00 p.m. on CBS in the U.S. and on Global TV in Canada.

DC’s LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Sneak Peek: Ahoy, Mateys!

March 3, 2016 By Melissa Smith 1 Comment

Legends Photo 107 s1e7 Marooned

Grace O’Malley.  Blackbeard.  Captain Hook.  Jack Sparrow.  Sir Francis Drake.  These names bring up visions of swashbuckling pirates and, in certain cases, some profound guy-liner.

A name that may not come to mind, but has a reputation as an interdiimensional pirate, is none other than DC’s LEGENDS OF TOMORROW’s Vandal Savage (guest star Casper Crump).

In the DC print canon, Savage’s crew included Blockbuster and Lady Shiva and took on Doctor Fate (late of SMALLVILLE and print media).

In tonight’s episode, Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) pilots the Waverider into deep space to rescue another timeship, the Acheron, a name sometimes associated with ghosts, supernatural beings and the underworld.

Stein (Victor Garber) is thrilled to be able to explore one of those unknown realms of the galaxy.  When a distress signal is received from Captain Eve Baxter (guest star Stephanie Cleough) of the timeship Acheron, Hunter sets a course for the rescue and arranges a boarding party.  (One must assume that in his hundreds of years on Earth, Hunter never saw what happens to the “red shirt guys” in a boarding party on STAR TREK.)

Rip, who trained aboard the Acheron and met his wife there, decides to answer the call in order to use the other ship’s computer to track Savage. The team has well-founded suspicions that the distress call may be a trap, but Hunter ignores the warnings.

Leaving Ray (Brandon Routh) and Kendra (Ciara Renée) in charge of the Waverider, Rip’s boarding party is met aboard the Acheron by time pirates led by Captain John Valor, who immediately imprisons Jax (Franz Drameh), Rory (Dominic Purcell) and Rip.

With no sign of Captain Baxter, one is left to wonder if her distress signal was a ruse, a desperate act before being shanghaied by Valor, a cosmic remnant of sound and video waves echoing from the past, or another of Savage’s devious traps.

With the others on the rescue team thrown into the brig, Dr. Stein must find a way to rescue them.  As a result, Garber gets to deliver one of the best lines of the week, “I’ll teach you to mess with a nuclear physicist.”

DC’s LEGENDS OF TOMORROW also stars Caity Lotz, Wentworth Milller and Amy Pemberton as the voice of Gideon.  Also guest starring in tonight’s episode, “Marooned,” is Aatash Amir.  “Marooned” was written by Anderson Mackenzie and Executive Producer, Phil Klemmer.  Gregory Smith directed the episode.

DC’S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW airs tonight on The CW in the United States at 8:00 p.m. and on CTV in Canada at 8:30pm.
