Burning Questions for Jason “Jay” Bell of ARROW, THE FLASH and STAR TREK BEYOND (Part 3)

January 13, 2016 By Melissa Smith Leave a Comment

Jay Bell doubling Captain Hook Once upon a Time

Jay Bell, a stunt performer who manages to blend graceful “fight choreography” with take-no-prisoners-combat-style technique recently took time out of his active schedule to chat with THE TV ADDICT.

Jay, whose work can be seen on television shows including ONCE UPON A TIME (seen above doubling OUAT’s “Captain Hook,” Colin O’Donoghue), ARROW, THE FLASH, SUPERNATURAL, LEGENDS OF TOMORROW and FEAR THE WALKING DEAD and feature films such as STAR TREK BEYOND, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is a former active duty soldier, Afghanistan veteran, musician, composer and father who took time out of his extremely busy schedule to answer our burning questions.

THE TV ADDICT:  Is there a gag that looked impossible on paper but happened with surprising ease?

JAY BELL:  I honestly have yet to witness this moment of insane planning for something that huge.  I think those moments are reserved for the likes of Tom Cruise hanging off the side of a flying cargo plane.

Honestly, I’d think a lot of those moments are more frequent when planning complex stunt driving sequences, explosions and those sorts.  It would be pretty amazing to be a fly on the wall though during the inception.

TVA: A lot of stunt performers are good at math and geometry.    When you were in high school did you concentrate on math to go into this line of work?

I was terrible at algebra, but I excelled in geometry and actually enjoyed it.  In high school, I didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do.  When I landed in college, I figured I’d go with technology and take the computer science route.  I pretty much settled for what I considered would be a “stable” career move and a bi-weekly paycheck.

Jay Bell Afghanistan copy

After college I couldn’t bear the thought of sitting in front of computer screen anymore.  That’s when I joined the Army and did an 8-month tour in Afghanistan.  I wanted to get my feet wet with some real life experience, and that’s exactly what I got.

After my tour ended, I had 2 months left on my contract, and that’s when I really got interested in film. I started training again, meeting local stunt performers and throwing my resume out there.  When I got my first taste of being on set, I was all over it.

TVA:  What are some upcoming features we might see you in?

During the TV hiatus this past summer, I had the opportunity to work on some pretty amazing features.  I went to Montreal to work on Marvel’s X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, and I doubled Kevin Spacey in NINE LIVES.

I then came back to start work on STAR TREK: BEYOND, as well as doing Marvel’s DEADPOOL reshoots.  It’s been a pretty amazing year, both in TV and feature films.

You can also see me do all the action/stunts for DC’s LEGENDS OF TOMORROW series as Hawkman, which debuts on The CW and CTV on January 21.

The TV Addict thanks Jay for answering our burning questions. Here is more information about him…

He also has training and/or special skills in Taekwondo, is a Certified PADI Rescue Diver, trained in Muay Thai, PAL firearms License, Shotokan Karate, military weapons/tactics, Tactix film fighting, does both military offensive and defensive driving, free running/Parkour, and holds a Class 5,6 Drivers License.

He enjoys rock climbing, bouldering and free climbing, tumbling and trampoline, does aerial platform/zoom boom ticket, wire work, ratchets and water work and has a forklift certification class 1,4,5.   He composes and plays music and has 11+ years experience in guitar/bass/percussion.

Jay is a 7-year active duty Army veteran who saw 8 months of combat duty in Kandahar, Afghanistan.  He does Close Protection Operator/Security for LMS Security Solutions (South America, Caribbean, Middle East) and Close Protection for actors/set containment for LifeLine protection services (Vancouver).

Jay Bell and Nestor Cabonell on Bates Motel

THE CW at TCA: CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND Ratings Talk, VampTastic Crossover

January 12, 2016 By Tina Charles Leave a Comment

The Television Critics Association’s press tour is an event that happens twice a year during the summer and at midseason. It’s a time when small screen reigns supreme. The broadcast and cable worlds along with the streaming universe shine the spotlight on new and returning shows.

When CW president, Mark Pedowtiz, took the stage at the TCAs recently, his mood was positive, fun and confident. Even though much of the conversation was geared towards the ratings challenged musical comedy, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND.

Pedowitz offered no excuses for the show’s low numbers. “At the moment, I wish I had more optimistic statistics or measurements. I don’t,” he said. “But what we do have is great faith in the show, great faith in the showrunner and creators Aline [Brosh] McKenna and (recent Golden Globewinner) Rachel Bloom. We believe in the show. We stand by the show.”

Don’t expect them to tweak or change the show’s formula in order to seek more viewers. Pedowitz thinks CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND is perfect just the way it is. “When we bought the show last spring, we wanted what Rachel and Aline did. We wanted that very in your face point of view, and we supported it.”

Several topics involving current series were addressed. While many fans of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and THE ORIGINALS are worried about the upcoming move to Fridays, Pedowitz isn’t. “The move to Friday night is not a move to exile it,” he claimed. “It’s a move to strengthen Friday night because we made a strategic shift on Thursday night, making it male skewed, going in with LEGENDS OF TOMORROW and THE 100, but we were happy to do that.”

He feels these scheduling moves put the network in a stronger place. “I think we’ve ended up coming in this midseason with the best schedule since I’ve been at the CW ever.”

Something that could help smooth over this time slot switch is an impending vamptastic crossover featuring TVD and its sexy spinoff. “You will see, organically, a crossover this year not of the size and scope that we do for FLASH and ARROW,” Pedowitz said. “It has to make sense. If they don’t make sense storywise, don’t do them. Don’t force them. The audience can tell.”

Look for another exciting crossover to hit ARROW later this year. It involves Vixen, a character from CW Seed’s animated web series of the same name, which was recently renewed for a second season. Yes, Mari McCabe’s not only making the jump from internet to broadcast TV; the female superhero makes the jump from cartoon to live action, too.

“We’ve been so thrilled with how well the series has done online that the actress who plays Vixen in the animated series Megalyn E.K. will be playing her later in this season on an upcoming episode of ARROW,” Pedowitz raved.

As for THE FLASH, the CW exec didn’t discuss ratings or story but he did drop some intel. “As a huge personal fan of CLERKS, CHASING AMY, and DOGMA, I’m also happy to announce that feature director and comic book aficionado Kevin Smith will be directing an episode of THE FLASH, which will air in May.”

SUPERNATURAL

The fate of SUPERNATURAL is a topic Pedowitz often has to address. This time was no different. Will the hit drama live to see another season?

“Both Jared and Jensen are having a blast, and as long as they have a blast, it’s a great thing. The show is performing [in its] 11th year, the show is performing better than it did last year, as well as you could ever hope. So, again, we have made no series pickups yet. We have not done anything along those lines, but I’m pretty hopeful that we’ll see it again.”

More CRAZY Talk

While much of the discussion of the critically acclaimed series remained ratings centric, there was time to slip some casting news into the conversation.

“It would also be appropriate to announce that Broadway star Lea Salonga will be appearing and performing in the season finale of CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND.”

iZOMBIE

Pedowitz was asked to tackle the fate of Rob Thomas’ ZOMBIE.

“I think the show has a good, very strong shot at making a third season, and I’m very proud of that show.”

RIVERDALE

A status update on RIVERDALE, the live action version of the Archie comics that’s in development at the CW. The word is that this series will go dark or go home:

“It’s under the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Roberto [Aguirre] Sacasa. We have not yet picked the show up. We’re going to go through our pilot process shortly, probably starting next week. I’ll see a number of pilot scripts. The darker take was when you have Roberto and Greg and they want to take a run at something, you give them that leeway. They deserve it. They’ve earned it. That’s why we went with a darker take.”

Burning Questions for Jason “Jay” Bell of ARROW, THE FLASH and STAR TREK BEYOND (Part 2)

January 12, 2016 By Melissa Smith Leave a Comment

2 Jay Headshot cropped

Stunt performer, Jay Bell, seen on many stunt-intensive TV shows and top-grossing feature films, recently took time out of his active schedule to chat with THE TV ADDICT.

A former active duty soldier, Afghanistan veteran, musician, composer and father, answered our burning questions about stunt work, broken bones and some of our favorite shows.  You can see him on many television shows including ARROW, THE FLASH, SUPERNATURAL, LEGENDS OF TOMORROW and feature films such as STAR TREK BEYOND, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and DEADPOOL!

Related: Read part 1 and part 3 of our interview with Jay Bell

Jay Bell doubling Milo Ventimiglia

THE TV ADDICT: How often do you have to wear special wigs, makeup, get special haircuts or dye your hair to double an actor? (seen above doubling Milo Ventimiglia)

JAY BELL: It always depends on the show.  The only time you wear a wig is if it’s for something specific or when you’re doubling an actor and they need to match your hair to the actor.  Otherwise, you’re getting a nice new haircut!

We get makeup done almost every time on set unless your face is covered by a mask/helmet or some kind of wardrobe.

When I was doubling Hawkman on LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, whenever I wore the Hawkman helmet, they had to color the bottom half of my hair at the back to make it lighter and match Falk Hentschel’s, the actor who plays Hawkman.

Most memorable makeup for me was for being a zombie on FEAR THE WALKING DEAD.  It was pretty wild!

TVA: What is your background?

Jay Bell in military uniform dress

I started off my journey with gymnastics and Shotokan Karate in high school.  After college, I did 7 years in the Army with a tour to Afghanistan.

These days you’ll find me hitting pads at my long time Muay Thai gym, working on flips and tumbling at the local indoor Parkour gym or training with my master at my Taekwondo Dojang.

Jay Bell gymnastics

I like to keep things varied, so that I don’t get stuck in one groove at one time.  Stunts can require a lot or a little, so if you’re prepared for a broader spectrum, you’ll set yourself up for success.

TVA: What is the most difficult type of actor/role to double?

I’d say matching the actor’s particular movement with a certain character.  A lot of times, you’ll double an actor and they move completely differently from how you would portray that same character.

For me, personally, I try and study the actor’s movement and copy their articulations as best as possible, even if it goes against feeling “right” for you.  That for me can be a tough, but also a welcomed, challenge.

TVA: If you could work with your dream director, who would it be?

Hands down, it would be Steven Spielberg.  I grew up watching almost every one of his films as a kid.  I think I might be temporarily starstruck if I saw him on set.  I have such respect for him and to be on the same set would be pretty amazing.

TVA: Do you act, sing, dance or do stage work in addition to stunts?

The only acting I get to do is on the jobs I book as a stunt/actor.  I have yet to have any experience on stage or singing/dancing gigs.  Somehow, I don’t know if that would be my niche, but never say “never.”

Jay Bell photo diving

TVA: How many hours do you train for a complex gag?

A Ratchet (“wire work”) can be a tricky one because you have to setup the machines with your particular weight, your velocity, arcs, how high you’re going and, most specifically, what’s your action before, during and after you land or hit the ground.

I’ve done some days of 12+ hours practicing one single gag.  Complex fight scenes with a lot of different moving parts can also take a long time.  We did one big sequence where the main heroes are fighting a lot of bad guys while there are complex driving sequences going on at the same time.  That was a full 2 12-hour days of rehearsing.

TVA: Legendary stunt person, Dar Robinson, never broke a bone in his career.  Is that really unusual, and have you?

It’s not unusual at all.  I know a lot of veteran stunt guys who have done some totally insane gags without a scratch. One friend, however, broke his neck on a feature film 5 years ago and has now fully recovered.

Luckily for me I’ve just broken a nose along with some torn ligaments in my ankles and a separated shoulder.  I don’t know…maybe I’m crazy…but that is getting off pretty easy to me (knocking on wood).

Jay Bell photo 5 X-Men

TVA: What is the most unusual request you ever got for a stunt?

I haven’t had too many “unusual requests” but on X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, the Hair Department pretty much told me that I’m shaving my head and beard off…except the mustache.  I was walking around Montreal for a month with a shaved head and a big dark bushy ‘stache…. not exactly the look I like to have for prolonged periods of time.

TVA: What hobbies do you have?

Completely unrelated to film, I’m an avid guitarist.  Whenever I have any time to myself and I’m not training, working or changing my daughter’s diapers, I’m playing and recording my own music on my MacBook.  It’s the only time I get to be alone in my own musical creative world.

That being said, I look at my career as a stunt performer as a hobby.  I think the moment I look at it as a job, I might start feeling different about it, and I don’t want that.  For me, it’s the most fun paid hobby you can have.

Burning Questions for Jason “Jay” Bell of ARROW, THE FLASH and STAR TREK BEYOND (Part 1)

January 11, 2016 By Melissa Smith Leave a Comment

jay

No, your eyes are not fooling you in the photo.  The faces above are not exactly the same faces that you see on THE FLASH and ARROW.  Those are the stunt performers who do the “ballet to sound effects” performed so brilliantly each week.  To the far left is Jay Bell, doubling Robbie Amell’s Firestorm.

Jay is a stunt double, stunt performer, actor and motion capture performer who has worked on such stunt-intensive television shows as THE FLASH, ARROW, SUPERNATURAL and the upcoming LEGENDS OF TOMORROW, as well as feature films X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, STAR TREK BEYOND and THE A-TEAM.

Jay Bell Afghanistan

A former active duty soldier, Afghanistan veteran, musician, composer and father, Jay was kind enough to take time out of his incredibly busy schedule to answer our burning questions about stunt work, broken bones and some of our favorite shows!

Related: Read part 2 and part 3 of our interview with Jay Bell

THE TV ADDICT: You have worked on some of the most stunt-packed shows on television and top-grossing films.  What is the hardest part about being a stunt performer?

JAY BELL:  That’s a good question.  The hardest thing about being a stuntman, in my opinion, is the physicality of the job. The longer you do it, the more it takes a toll on your body.

Jay Bell rock climbing copy

When you’re constantly being thrown through the ringer… physically…it definitely catches up faster than you think.  I’ve torn all of the ligaments in both ankles, broken my nose and separated my right shoulder multiple times.

In my mind, though, whatever injuries you incur over the span of your career are worth it because it’s one of the coolest jobs you can possibly have.

Jay Bell Firestorm

TVA: Do you do a lot of work with CGI and what is most interesting about it?

Now that TV and film have become so reliant on CGI to fill in the gaps, I’ve had plenty of opportunities.  In my experience, CGI has brought energy and life to the characters for the viewers to enjoy at home.

I doubled Robbie Amell last season on THE FLASH as “Firestorm.”  His character is a superhero on the show whose body lights up on fire.

I got to do a lot of the action for that character.  I got so excited every time I had an opportunity to “flame on” and pretend like I’m calling upon this awesome force and become this badass human fireball.

It was the same with Hawkman on LEGENDS OF TOMORROW.  I got to pretend I’m sprouting these huge angel-like wings from my back as if I were some demigod, whether I was on a wire flying around or sweeping a bad guy’s legs out with one wing.  CGI is very cool to work with and even cooler when you get to see the finished product.

TVA: What is the hardest part about keeping your face away from the camera?

That can be a tough one to pull off.   Sometimes, the camera is pointing directly at your face during your action, so you definitely have to be creative on how to sell a movement, whether its a simple punch or doing wire work.

If the director does not want your face seen, you have to be sure it’s not seen.  A lot of times, you would typically sell a hit away from camera.

TVA: Did you ever forget to duck (sorry, I had to ask, LOL)?

mmm…..yes….It sucked, and I was totally embarrassed.   But, it sold well to the camera!

TVA: How many parts can you double on one project?

As many as the Coordinator/Director wants.  One of my close friends who works on ARROW as a lead double has doubled 8-10 different characters on that single production.

It also depends if you’re a full-time double for one of the main characters or just for an actor for that particular episode.  If you’re unavailable or have too much on your plate, most of the time they’ll try and find another performer with your particulars and skillset to fill in for you.

TVA: As a stuntman, you are required to act as well as throw a punch.  Could you tell us a little more about that?

Almost every single one of my acting credits has been a Stunt/Actor Credit.

I still have to go through the audition process like any actor would, but in these cases they typically want a stunt performer who they know can throw out some lines with no problem as well as do the actual stunt.

It’s a lot of fun, as I tend to get really into character, even with one line.

TVA: What is your specialty, e.g. horses, fire, cars, hand-to-hand?

For me it’s definitely hand-to-hand and fighting.  I have a background in Muay Thai and Taekwondo so that style of stunts comes more naturally to me.

I’d love to get into more driving/motorcycle style of stunts but most of those guys have been in the business for 20+ years and have earned those coveted spots with skill and time in.  Someday, though!

TVA: Do you take acting and dance lessons in addition to strength training or boxing or have you learned how to act on set?

I’ve literally taken one acting class in my life.  Everything else I’ve learned regarding acting has been by watching other actors on set and how they portray their characters.  I think it’s better than any acting class you can take and you get to see an array of different styles.

You can also read part 2 and part 3 of our interview with Bell.

Starz at TCA: THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE Premiere Date, New shows in Development & New Key Art from THE DRESSER

January 8, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

girlfriend

During its TCA presentation today, Starz announced the production of three new shows, released key art from THE DRESSER and announced the premiere date for THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE.

Starz’ diverse programming strategy continues with the development of SANTERIA. Cuban writer and director Alejandro Brugues (“From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series,” Juan of the Dead) and Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project, “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series”) will executive produce and direct for the supernatural series. “Cuba, its doors finally open to the world. But a secret war brews there, a clash between opposing sects of Santeria, the ancient religion born on the island. Two undercover agents investigating a bizarre murder are pulled into this supernatural conflict and discover it’s more dangerous and far-reaching than anything they could have imagined.”

Starz also announced the development of POUR VIDA, a series inspired by a short story by Richard Villegas, Jr. “POUR VIDA follows twin sisters, Brook and Lyn Hernandez, who inherit an East LA building from their recently deceased aunt who raised them. They open Pour Vida, a new wine and tapas bar, in a building in Boyle Heights which houses a failing lesbian bar below and a village-like collection of Eastside denizens in three units above. Pour Vida is the sisters’ attempt to put the “gente” in the “gentefication” of the historic barrio. They find themselves the only thing protecting the tenants from displacement, their aunt’s legacy from erasure, and their neighborhood from the Great White Bridge about to bring jalapeño chicken hummus wraps to the ‘hood. Brook and Lyn discover upon returning to East LA that they didn’t just inherit a building – they inherited a pueblo. For Life.”

Finally, Starz is developing MALEFICIA. The Starz and Televisa USA co-production is based on the popular Mexican production “El Maleficio,” which originally aired in 1983-84 with 320 episodes to become one of the most successful telenovelas of all time. The new supernatural thriller will center on Don Enrique De Martino, a powerful Mexican businessman who has made a deadly pact with the Devil. Writer and Producer Mauricio Katz (THE BRIDGE) will serve as showrunner.

Meanwhile, THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE, starring Riley Keough (MAGIC MIKE), is a reimagining of Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 movie of the same name. Soderbergh executive produces, along with Philip Fleishman, Lodge Kerrigan, Amy Seimetz, Gary Marcus and Jeff Cuban. THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE will premiere on STARZ on Sunday, April 10th at 8 pm ET/PT. All 13 half-hour episodes will also be made available simultaneously for STARZ subscribers on STARZ PLAY and STARZ ON DEMAND, in the U.S.

Starz has also released key art from the original movie THE DRESSER, premiering in Summer 2016. The film stars Ian McKellan and Anthony Hopkins, who are appearing on film together for the first time.
