Why You’re Missing Out If You’re Not Watching Syfy’s HAVEN

July 29, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

Last year, a remarkable new television series debuted under the auspices of one of the most renown names in horror fiction: Stephen King. Despite the prestigious name associated with it, Syfy’s supernatural series HAVEN debuted quietly and snuck up on everyone. Perhaps because of its quiet introduction, it managed to do the impossible. It unveiled its first season with such a careful and methodical approach that viewers were lulled into a false sense of security. By the end of its first season, fans and viewers only knew one thing for certain – HAVEN was never going to be predictable. It had shattered and exceeded expectations time and time again over the course of its initial thirteen episodes. So much so, that no one knew exactly who the main character Audrey Parker really was in the end. Was she an FBI agent, a shape-shifter, an amnesiac, or something else entirely?

Based on the short story “The Colorado Kid,” by Stephen King, creators Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn, expanded the King story to create a town inhabited by people afflicted with special abilities – or “troubles” as they like to call it. Whether a blessing or a curse – well, mostly a curse – the townsfolk of Haven, Maine sought only to live normal lives. But for some unknown reason, the “troubles” continued to plague them generation after generation. [Read more…]

Every Adventure Has A Beginning: An Appreciation of the World of TORCHWOOD

July 29, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

As a spin-off from the globally popular sci-fi series DOCTOR WHO, it seemed impossible to conceive that Russell T Davies could create two addictive universes. Yet upon the creation of Captain Jack Harkness in Series 1 of DOCTOR WHO, which starred Christopher Eccleston, that is exactly what happened. Creating a character larger than the multi-episode arc could contain, Russell T Davies did the unthinkable and with a wave of his magical wand – the writing pen – he dazzled fans once again by creating TORCHWOOD. Not only poaching one of the more flamboyant and captivating characters of the new series of DOCTOR WHO, Russell also chose to use an anagram of DOCTOR WHO and came up with the name TORCHWOOD.

Thus, one year after his successful debut as Captain Jack in DOCTOR WHO, John Barrowman debuted in his own television series as the infamous time-traveler now stuck on Earth. Being an earthbound extraterrestrial was not the entirety of Jack’s claim to fame. As viewers quickly found out, Jack is immortal. Even a bullet to the head at point blank range did little to phase Jack’s regenerative powers. Touched by the hand of god, or The Doctor in this case, Jack was not only abandoned on Earth, he had been cursed to live for eternity upon it. But a resourceful and resilient man, Jack ingratiated himself with the British government and was bestowed with his own secret government branch called Torchwood.

As seen through the eyes of a new recruit Gwen Cooper (fantastically portrayed by Eve Myles), who stumbled upon Torchwood as the series began, the entirety of the first three season of TORCHWOOD followed the star-crossed adventures and many loves of Gwen and Jack. Jack being an other-worldly being never felt constrained by our mere human relationship standards and continued to live his eternal life connecting romantically and physically with anyone and everything that struck his fancy. Gwen was also soon caught up in the no boundaries type of lifestyle and found herself connecting on all levels with other beings and humans of both persuasions. [Read more…]

We Take ISSUES with Greg Grunberg and Josh Cooke

July 27, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

During an exclusive interview at Comic-Con, Greg Grunberg and Josh Cooke shared what their new webseries ISSUES is really about and why they think it is riding the wave of the digital era and offers a unique perspective on the tortured psyche of superheroes buckling under the weight of their responsibilities and insecurities.

So what is ISSUES about?
JOSH:  It was created by myself and Matt Oates, and the concept of the show is that it’s about a therapist – a psychologist — whose clients are animated superheroes.  So it’s a live action, real world with superheroes who have a lot of serious issues.  Greg came into because he plays The Dark Kodiak, who is sort of our Batman arch-type character, but in a bear get-up, pretty much.
GREG:  In a gay world, I’m a bear.  So it fits perfectly!
JOSH: When I asked him, ‘Can you play a bear?’ His response was, ‘Grrrrr!’
GREG:  And so the answer was ‘Yes!’  We had done a movie together called ‘Group Sex,’ so I was kind of returning the favor.  I was thrilled when he asked, especially when I saw the sketches and since Josh was kind enough to come over to my house to do the pilot.  It was easy.  When I saw it, I was like, ‘Uh, can I stay on this show?’ [Read more…]

Mehcad Brooks Shares His Insight and Mind-Set on USA Network’s New Series NECESSARY ROUGHNESS

July 27, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

From the casting couch to the therapy couch, Mehcad Brooks analyzes what it takes to succeed both on screen and off screen.  Starring as TK, the football quarterback with a hot temper and an unexpected heart of gold, and a soft-spot for his therapist’s family, Mehcad shared in a recent press call what he sees in TK’s soul.

Can you talk about how you became involved with the series NECESSARY ROUGHNESS?
MEHCAD: Yes, I was in Toronto and I got a phone call and a script and (my agent) said, ‘Listen, we’d like you to read this.’ I was really heartbroken after MY GENERATION was cancelled, and I just kind of sworn off television.  But when I read the script I was like, ‘Wait a second. Maybe I spoke too soon.’ I was really drawn to the project because Terrence had so many levels to him. And I thought, you TK was really endearing; also flamboyant and boisterous, but at the same time, I thought, ‘I think he’s a really misunderstood kid.’ And that’s something I was wanting because that’s kind of what I consider myself a very child-like person, but not childish. So I understand that. But he hasn’t quite gotten to that level yet. But, I was kind of routing for him. So it really drew me to him. [Read more…]

Sharif Atkins Teases His Key Role On Tonight’s WHITE COLLAR and Previews What’s Next on USA’s Hottest Summer Series

July 26, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

In anticipation of tonight’s Jones-centric instalment of WHITE COLLAR, we recently had the opportunity to take part in a conference call with his charming portrayer Sharif Atkins. What follows is what he had to say about tonight’s episode “As You Were,” as well as what’s next for USA’s hottest summer series.

Can you talk first about how you became involved in WHITE COLLAR?
SHARIF:  How I became involved?  It’s almost 2 and 1/2 years ago now.  Three seasons ago I met up with Jeff Eastin and, at that time actually, I was an actor looking for work.  He and I had worked together on a project called HAWAII about 4-5 years ago and developed a great professional rapport, and did great work together. So we got together and he said there was a possibility that there was a role that could be brought together and put together for the purposes of the show. So I said, ‘Hey, I’m on board!’ [Read more…]
