A Few Candid Questions With Doug Liman, Executive Producer of COVERT AFFAIRS

June 20, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

With COVERT AFFAIRS’ second season already underway, the adrenaline-pumping series has demonstrated that it is willing to venture across the globe this season.  During a recent conference call, executive producer Doug Liman: talked about how the globe-trotting filming came about.

It seems there is a lot of traveling around the world for location shoots this season.  Do you choose a location first or are they selected after the episodes are written?
Doug Liman:: We choose the locations first.  Some of it is weather dependent. We are sort of a warm weather show because it runs in the summer.   So some of it’s just like:  what haven’t we done or what sounds cool?  Obviously it wasn’t a stretch that we would think of going to Paris. We shot Bourne Identity there and who wouldn’t think of Paris?  But we also went to Sri Lanka last year and that’s not something you necessarily would ordinarily think of.  So this year we’re also going to Rio and we went to Puerto Rico; and we are going to Istanbul next week. So we sort of think:  okay, we haven’t been to that part of the world in a little while.  Because sometimes as the show goes there, but we don’t physically take the actors there. The show travels to some exotic locations, but the reality is that the actors stayed behind in Toronto and we send a crew to the exotic location. This season we’ve already sent Piper to Puerto Rico and Paris. We’re sending Chris Gorham to Turkey and we have trips planned to Berlin. But maybe the thing I’m most excited about in the whole season is that we have a trip planned to Rio for Piper coming up. That’s one of the great things about being in the second season and having been a hit in our first season is we’re being allowed to do something extraordinary. Because no TV shows are allowed to take their cast to these foreign cities ever.  And it makes such a difference — and if you caught last Tuesday night’s episode of Covert Affairs — we could not have pulled that episode off unless we physically took Piper Perabo to Paris. Everybody loved that episode so much that it’s just giving the network and the studio even more confidence to let us travel even more. [Read more…]

SUMMER SCOOP: China Anne McClain Talks About Her New Disney Series A.N.T. FARM

June 17, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

China Anne McClain

In the Disney series A.N.T. FARM, China Anne McClain plays a musical genius who must navigate high school with a bunch of other gifted youngsters as they pursue their passions.

What is A.N.T FARM about?
China:  A.N.T. Farm is a show basically about high school and the A.N.T. program, and A.N.T. stands for Advanced Natural Talent. Everyone in the program is very gifted in whatever it is they do.  I’m a musical prodigy.  You know, mathematics and arts.  So the characters are 11 and 12 and the high schoolers don’t want them there. And my character is China Sparks.  She is very complicated.  She doesn’t care about what the high schoolers think about her.  She is just going to make the most of her high school experience. Ask the Addict: Spoilers for TRUE BLOOD, THE FINDER, SHAMELESS, HAWAII FIVE-0, WHITE COLLAR & More!

June 16, 2011 By theTVaddict 17 Comments

TRUE BLOOD’s return is sooooo close I can taste it! Any scoop to tied me over? — Rachel
The TV Addict: Well, since Michael Ausiello already beat us to the punch with regards to the same-sex shocker, and we sure as heck aren’t about to spoil the identity of Bon Temps newest Real Estate baron, we’ll simply leave fans with two tantalizing words to tide you over until the show’s June 26 return: Think LOST.

Any word on what fans can expect from the second season of HAWAII FIVE-0? — David
The TV Addict: Taking the literal approach to answering your question, “Romance” would probably be the one word we’d choose to sum up the start of HAWAII FIVE-0’s second season. Particularly because the show’s Producers (or perhaps Network Bigwigs) have seemingly decided that if you can’t beat ’em — them of course referring to timeslot competitor CASTLE — you might as well join ’em. Which is to say, fans should brace themselves for a little island lovefest as Producers begin their search for a thirty-something bombshell to play Alex O’Loughlin’s part-time love interest, full-time Homeland Security Officer Lori Wilson, a character that sources describe as a female McGarrett.

Ridiculously excited for FALLING SKIES. Especially curious as to what the aliens beef is with us poor humans. Any clues? — Jay
The TV Addict: Funny story actually. During our recent visit to the set of the upcoming ABC/Global TV series COMBAT HOSPITAL, we happened to lunch with someone intimately involved with FALLING SKIES which coincidentally enough shot many of their scenes on the very same lot. Much to our surprise, said source was perhaps a little too excited about what’s in store for FALLING SKIES fans, to the point where he actually went as far as to reveal how the season ends! And while we’re not about to spoil that gem, we will say that those pesky arachnid-style aliens who come down to earth to enslave humanity’s youth… well, they might just be the least of the planet’s problems. FALLING SKIES: What to Expect and Not Expect from this Summer Sci-Fi Series

June 16, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

In the past month there has been a virtual onslaught of publicity to promote TNT’s new alien-invasion series FALLING SKIES.  There are billboards, bus ads, posters and a multitude of print and online advertising.  For the most part, it is both extremely effective – yet it is also somewhat misleading.

It is effective because when it premieres everyone looking to see aliens will be tuning in to check out the show.  However, the misleading part is that those same viewers will be looking for a kick-ass action show.  Unfortunately, FALLING SKIES is not that show.  It does not start with a bang and it does not offer high-octane action sequences.  It offers instead, brief moments of action – such as when the aliens have cornered the survivors as they scavenge.

Viewers should be better prepared for what FALLING SKIES actually is.  It is a tale of defeat and desperation.  It is the after-math.  We lost the war for our planet — and the survivors are refugees skulking in the darkness trying to avoid attention and desperate for food, water and shelter. Summer Scoop: Skyler Samuels and Amy Pietz, Grey Damon and Benjamin Stone Preview THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING

June 14, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

On THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING, Skyler Samuels portrays Chloe King and Amy Pietz plays her mother, Meredith King.

How would you describe this show in comparisons to other shows?
Skyler: I don’t think I could compare CHLOE KING to any other TV show or movie. It’s kind of its own special package. In an hour, you get drama, you get romance, you’ll laugh. It’ll leave you on the edge of your seat. So it’s got a little bit of everything and it’s like the most perfect balance you could want.
Amy: I totally agree. I try to explain it to my friends using a little something more that they can relate to. Sometimes I use BUFFY, THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and there’s a little GILMORE GIRLS mixed in there. But Skyler’s right. It’s really balanced. It has romance and it has action — and the action is what really turned me on the most about the show — and it’s funny.
Skyler: It is fun watching the action sequences — not only because it is a girl kickin’ butt — but it’s very inspirational for women to watch and feel empowered. It’s funny too because Chloe always bites off more  than she can chew. She’ll say ‘oh, I can take you’ to the villain — only he’s like 200 pounds and who’s like 6’4” and I’m like this little scrawny girl whose got to fight the bad guy. It’s also funny because sometimes in the middle of things, Chloe will do funny things or she’ll make jokes. She’s always got that clever wit which kind of makes the action portion fun and funny to watch.
Amy: And I love how the female emphasis on the show is healthy. There is a good relationship between Chloe and her mother and Chloe and her best friends. They’re not talking about money and sex all the time – it’s not GOSSIP GIRL. It’s something I would allow my daughter to watch and be proud of it. I’m not embarrassed by it. It’s an ABC Family show. I am proud of this show.
Skyler: And it’s a very realistic portrayal of what a 16-year old girl would be experiencing and that might sound funny because there are all these supernatural elements, but that’s kind of what makes the show work. There’s this practical aspect. She’s trying to figure out who she is, how to talk to a boy, how to maintain a relationship with her two best friends, and how to talk to her mom. Dating or putting away laundry, all the usual things and at the same time she discovers that being a teenager just wasn’t enough. She’s got this added factor — these supernatural abilities that she has and because of that, it’s kind of a fantastical way to look at how a teenage girl lives — having to deal with all these things and becoming a young woman. The Lazy Days of Summer:  Why Summer TV Shows Are Like a Fine Wine

June 7, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

Summer used to be a wasteland – it was when primetime shows aired repeats over the summer and failed TV shows were burnt-off.  However, ever since Fox successfully launched AMERICA IDOL during the so-called “dead” season nearly a decade ago, Summer has become a richer and more sought-after landscape of television.  It is the perfect time to launch shows that need more time to secure a stable audience and it allows networks to try out shows that may not typically appeal to viewers during the convoluted and congested Fall and Mid-Season.

For television connoisseurs and TV addicts, summer has become a long-awaited mecca as it began offering a rich palate of delectable treats.  Ranging from USA Network’s BURN NOTICE to Syfy’s EUREKA to TNT’s THE CLOSER to ABC Family’s PRETTY LITTLE LIARS to A&E’s THE GLADES to Lifetime’s DROP DEAD DIVA and finally to HBO’s TRUE BLOOD, there is something for everyone.  So much so that an unprecedented number of new scripted shows and reality TV shows are scheduled to launch this summer.  [Read more…]

Piper Perabo and Chris Gorham Share What to Expect From Season 2 of COVERT AFFAIRS

June 6, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

On June 2nd, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences gave a sneak peek screening of the second season premiere of COVERT AFFAIRS to a select number of guild members, guests, and fans. Appearing at this fun event were cast members Piper Perabo and Chris Gorham, along with show creators Matt Corman and Chris Ord, and executive producers David Bartis and Doug Liman. Then moderating the evening’s event was TV Guide’s William Keck.

Briefly highlighting the genesis of the show and how the research was done to add as much realism to the show as possible, it was explained that, while the CIA does not exactly provide tours of its facilities, they were able to find a contact who got them access to tour at the Langley facility. It was to their surprise to find that the CIA actually has a Starbucks and a Burger King directly inside the building. They also got to see for the wall of stars representing the deaths of fallen agents whose identities cannot be revealed. It is remarkable that even after death so many of our nations heroes’ identities must be protected. [Read more…]
