the strain poster

FX’s new drama THE STRAIN is looking to bring a darker vampire tale to your television screens. It wants viewers to curl up with a blanket and pillow and get ready to have the hairs on the back on their necks stand on end. THE STRAIN may initially start out like a routine virus outbreak tale, but right away people will start to figure out that this is no ordinary virus. People are not just dying, they are changing, and vampirism is not pretty. The transformations are brutal and ugly, and the vampires are meant to be the creatures of your worst nightmares. This is, after all, coming from one of modern film’s greatest monster-makers, Guillermo Del Toro.

At a special advance screening of the series at the Director’s Guild, the cast and producers provided some fun teasers about the show and what to expect from the various characters who get swept up in the first-wave of the viral attack. [Read more…]

hemlock-grove-poster-madeleine-martin

Shelley Godfrey was one of those amazing mysteries of Season 1 of HEMLOCK GROVE. From the minute she was introduced, she captivated simply by her presence. She was the gentle-giant sister to Roman Godfrey (Bill Skarsgard), who seemed to see everything with her all-knowing eye and who would literally glow when someone touched her skin.

In the end of Season 1, Shelley was the hero that saved her brother and everyone else from the vargulf. But in doing so, it put Shelley in the crosshairs of Sheriff Sworn (Aaron Douglas), who shot her in the back as she tried to run away. Shelley’s fate is still to be determined, but can easily surmise that she did survive and she has a journey of her own this season on HEMLOCK GROVE.

In a press interview from the set, Madeleine Martin talked briefly about taking over her new role as Shelley (the role had been previously portrayed by Nicole Boivin in Season 1) and teased where Shelley’s story may go for Season 2. [Read more…]

July 10, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

meghan ory hallmark channel

Crown Media, parent company to the Hallmark Channel, knows how to throw a spectacular party. This year’s theme of “Christmas in July” meant that a glamorous Bel Air mansion was selected has the hosting venue, which with its jaw-dropping back terrace view of Los Angeles meant that they could showcase a 60-foot Christmas tree trimmed with ribbons, bows and twinkling lights. There was also a giant Santa’s sleigh with packages and a yummy selection of holiday treats. Then just inside the mansion’s opulent walls was a ballroom decked out like a Winter Wonderland of white with even more tantalizing confections to tempt even the most jaded of the Hollywood press.

But by far the most stunning aspect of the event was the sheer number of recognizable celebs from all of Hallmark’s landmark series CEDAR COVE and WHEN CALLS THE HEART, as well as their well-known movies and holiday films. Both CEDAR COVER and WHEN CALLS THE HEART debuted with a big splash on Hallmark and have been picked up for second seasons. TCA 2014: Quick Takes From the WGN America, Discovery and BBC America TCA Presentations

July 10, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

manhattan wgn america

Day 2 of the 16-day biannual Television Critic’s Association Summer 2014 Press Tour started off with introductions of new programming from Discovery, WGN America and BBC America. The following is a snapshot look at their new series, as well as what was noteworthy from the featured presentations.

WGN AMERICA
“Manhattan” is a new drama series set back in the 1940’s when the U.S. government was striving to discover the secret to make an atomic bomb. It tells the stories of the men and women who were scientists, mathematicians, soldiers and the wives that had to keep this massive secret and were not even sure what the end goal was at the time. Invoking the nostalgia from the era, the show plays like a classic movie with each episode a new chapter in a dark tale of trying to live a normal life in the midst of an extraordinary situation. With secrets and classified material embruing their entire world, there is an underlying boiling tension. It becomes a question of who can you really trust and is the government telling them everything they need to know about their highly confidential mission. The show appears to captured the innate glamour of the era with classic cars and stylish clothing while merging it with the dusty, secret-filled world of a town that was not even allowed to have a name. Apparently, it was just too dangerous to even be a name on the map. (Premieres July 27, 2014.) [Read more…]

Hemlock-Grove-Roman-Character-Poster-Season-Two

In the Netflix horror series HEMLOCK GROVE, the show has employed both constructed sets and on-location locales to create its fictional world of opulence controlled by the Godfreys. Every scene has to remind the viewer that Olivia and Roman Godfrey are wealthier than anyone can dream. So choosing how to portray their homes, offices and the White Tower medical institute, there has been an inordinate amount of thought given to what each should look like.

In a press interview from the set, production designer Drew Boughton briefly talked about what new locations will be seen in Season 2 and what was behind the decision to abandon the magnificent Godfrey mansion. [Read more…]

Red Carpet Redux: The Cast of THE BRIDGE Teases Season 2

July 9, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

the bridge season 2

FX’s tense drama THE BRIDGE returns for its second season with the continuing saga of Detectives Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) and Marco Ruiz (Demian Bichir) as they seek to stop the killing of young woman in Juarez, Mexico, whether it be by one man “El Diablo” or a coordinated culture of police corruption and depravity amongst a select few who view these girls as disposable commodities. Also left unresolved from the first season is whether Marco will actually go forward on his vendetta against the man who killed his son.

Simultaneously, there is the fates of Charlotte Millwright (Annabeth Gish) and her faithful farm hand Cesar (Alejandro Patino), who inherited a tunnel between the U.S. and Mexico, which Fausto Galvin (Ramon Franco), the Mexican drug cartel leader, considers his business investment and property for his exclusive use in smuggling drugs over the border. But there may be a bit of a tug of war for that business opportunity with the appearance of Monte P. Flagman (Lyle Lovett) who may have his own designs on the tunnel and the drug enterprise.

Also pursuing life on the sidelines and looking for an angle to exploit to further their careers are Daniel Frye (Matthew Lillard) and Adrianna Mendez (Emily Rios), who are certain that there is a much bigger story to be uncovered with the disappearing girls of Juarez.

With so many lives unknowingly intertwined, yet all following the same threads to perhaps the same end point, things are about to get a lot more heated and intense and dangerous for everyone.

During a special premiere, the cast of THE BRIDGE took a few minutes to preview where their varied characters’ stories pick back up as well as introducing a few new characters who join the fight against drug trafficking and human slavery in both El Paso and Juarez, Mexico. [Read more…]

EXTANT Scoop: Creator Mickey Fisher and Showrunner Greg Walker Talk the Mysteries of Their New Halle Berry Sci-Fi Starrer

July 9, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

extant-halle-berry-cbs

CBS Television has jumped into the sci-fi genre pool with another big splash. This summer CBS is debuting its new sci-fi series EXTANT starring Halle Berry. It starts off as a tale of a female astronaut returning from a 13-month solo mission in space and finding out she is pregnant. Just how is that possible? In addition, she is returning to her husband and son, though she has a hard time acclimating back into her family, especially with the unexpected news of an impossible pregnancy. To add a bit more a twist on the sci-fi angle, her son is a humanic — or rather a robot android that simulates human interaction.

EXTANT looks to explore what it means to be human, what else may be out there in the universe and whether entities alien or android can understand truly the human condition and forge genuine bonds and love.

In a recent press conference call creator and executive producer Mike Fisher and show runner and executive producer Greg Walker talked about the genesis of the show, what themes it seeks to explore and if there is life beyond this season. [Read more…]

TCA 2014: Quick Takes From the Ovation, Al Jazeera America and National Geographic Panels

July 9, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

Notebook18

Day 1 of the 16-day biannual Television Critic’s Association Summer 2014 Press Tour started off with introductions of new programming from Ovation, Aljazeera America and National Geographic. The following is a snapshot look at their new series, as well as what was noteworthy from the featured presentations.

OVATION
“Young Doctor’s Notebook” (Pictured above) is a remaining of works of Russian novelist Mikhail Bulgakov set during Civil War era of Russia in 1918, and Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliff co-star. Essentially Hamm’s character revisits his younger self (Radcliff) as he pursues his early career journals. It is a comedic recollection of the circumstances that shaped him at a young age and put him on a destructive path in his life. If only we could all go back and give advice and warnings to our younger selves. Morphine addiction would top the list of warnings. Hitting on girls that have no interest would be a close second. With so many regrets, can one truly ever warn oneself from the paths that lead to dark ends? Point of interest: Radcliff was flattered that Hamm recommended him to play his younger self on the show. (Season 2 premieres August 2014 with 4 new episodes.)

“Young Marvels” is a new reality TV series that tells the story of extraordinarily gifted young teens/children pursuing the arts with tenacity and professionalism that most adult performers would envy. Clearly they follow the sage advice: “If you can dream it, do it.” Best of all: “Love it.” The 8 to 12 year olds showcased are truly amazing. (Premieres July 16th on Ovation.) [Read more…]
