The one thing that the 2011-2012 television season will be best remembered for is:  it was the year that more of the new shows will be canceled than were picked up for a second season. 
 
Viewers has shown that they are not just unwilling to check out new TV shows, they are unwilling to stick around beyond an episode or two. This may be a pattern that is typical of television viewers, but never before has it been so prevalent across the television landscape.  Viewers just shrugged their shoulders and kept watching their “tried-and-true” shows or opted to check out fare off-network.  This has left the “Big 5” networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and The CW) scrambling to figure out how to attract viewers.  If the 2011-2012 season’s shotgun approach to trying to find anything that would lure viewers did not work, what could the 2012-2013 season hope to offer that the previous year did not?  [Read more…]

A Candid Conversation with SWITCHED AT BIRTH Star Sean Berdy

In accordance with our recent obsession with SWITCHED AT BIRTH, ABC Family’s remarkable newish series chronicling the story of two teen girls (Daphne and Bay) who discover that they were accidentally, as the title suggests, you know what, theTVaddict.com recently had the pleasure of taking part in a conference call with one of the show’s many breakout stars, actor Sean Berdy.

As Emmett Bledsoe, best friend to Daphne (Katie Leclerc) and current love interest to Bay (Vanessa Marano), Berdy isn’t just winning legions of fans with his winning portrayal of what the ASL (American Sign Language) community has cleverly characterized as their James Dean, he’s become a positive role model and spokesperson in the process. Or at least that was our takeaway from this incredibly interesting and candid interview in which the actor touches on the rocky road ahead for Emmett and Bays’ relationship, the challenges that comes with bringing this character to life on SWITCHED AT BIRTH, and his upcoming “Signin’ in the Streets” event at Downtown Disney. In any drama, the story is only as good as its heroes and villains, and in ABC Family’s THE LYING GAME, the best villain so far is Alec Rybak – a shady District Attorney who may or may not have committed murder to cover up a decades old mystery.    In a recent conference call with press, star Adrian Pasdar shared what his character Alec is really up to and hinted that there may be trouble in paradise with the pending nuptials of Alec and Rebecca (fantastically portrayed by Charisma Carpenter). Just because someone may be imagining a world where their wife or son has not died, does that make the person mentally unfit?  In the new thought-provoking series AWAKE, Cherry Jones and BD Wong play the psychiatrists in each world (one real and one imaginary) that Detective Michael Britten lives.  They are the voice of reason as Det. Britten tries to sustain a simultaneous existence in two very different worlds.  Due to the impact such a revelation could have on his job, they are literally the only people who he can trust and rely upon to figure out what is real or not real – or how to keep both realities alive.  Taking a few minutes to talk with press in a recent conference call, Cherry and BD candidly shared what the characters are doing to help Det. With a roll of the dice, NBC is throwing a very unique police procedural onto the television landscape – the premise involves a cop lives in two realities simultaneously:  one in which his wife is alive, and other in which his son is alive.  Unwilling to choose between them and experience the loss of either, Detective Michael Britten wakes up each day to a different world.  His worlds not only differ based on whether his wife or son is alive, but he has different partners on the job and is working different cases.  The mystery of which is real boggles the mind, and yet captivates as you become sucked into the special reality in which Michael Britten lives.  Taking a few minutes to chat with press in a recent conference call, star Jason Isaacs provided insight into this labyrinthine world and how he keeps it straight in his mind.
