We Look Back on TERRA Nova’s First Season Prior to Tonight’s Explosive Season (Yup, We Said Season!) Finale

December 19, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

It has been a pivotal first season of the sci-fi drama backdropped in a world where dinosaurs still roam.  TERRA NOVA ambitiously set out to show us the story of a family that was willing to travel back in time in order to stay together and have a chance at a better future for humanity.

But paradise is only beautiful on the surface.  There have been bumps and bruises along the way as each of the Shannon family members struggled to find their place in this new world and tried to figure out who they could really trust.  Utopia is a wonderful ambition, but human beings always bring the element of surprise and unpredictability as their emotions sway their decisions — for better or worse.

For Jim Shannon (Jason O’Mara), the former police narcotics detective turned prison-escapee desperate to keep his family together and to ensure the safe-keeping of his youngest daughter, there was literally no place left on Earth to hide.  Fortunately for him, he married the right woman, Dr. Elisabeth Shannon (Shelley Conn), a trauma surgeon who the government recruited for colonization in an experimental settlement comprised of scientists who would safeguard the planet 85 million years in the past.  The colony of Terra Nova sounds ideal, but humans rarely can agree on how to best shape the future, let alone protect the planet.

When the Shannons arrived, they discovered that things were not as idyllic as promised and that there was a rebel force known as the Sixers who were working covertly to crack the code to open the time portal in both directions — thereby allowing an unknown faction to swoop in and exploit the resources of Terra Nova for their own nefarious purposes in the future. We Shine the Spotlight on PERSON OF INTEREST Star Kevin Chapman

December 16, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

When talking to star Kevin Chapman about his role as Detective Lionel Fusco on PERSON OF INTEREST, one thing becomes quickly clear:  he loves every second working on one of primetimes’ hottest new TV shows.  Sharing what drew him to the show initially, Kevin did not hesitate to mention it was the high caliber of creators, writers and co-actors that made it so appealing for him.  Truth be told, it has become a dream job for him and he feels excited each time he gets a new script.  In fact, each episode reads like a page-turning mystery story and he is utterly thrilled to find himself right smack in the middle of it.  To work on a show where there is this nearly omnipresent machine that generates numbers corresponding to a person whose life is on the line, is like working in the Land of Oz — and our heroes take turns being the man behind the curtain to save those people’s lives that have entered the cross-hairs of fate.  PERSON OF INTEREST is a wonderful twist on the classic police procedure with an embedded fairytale element woven in. In Defense of SUITS Star Patrick J. Adams’ SAG Nomination

December 14, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 4 Comments

Every time award nominations are announced there is the usual hoopla about whether the various films, TV shows, actors and actresses were expected to get nominations — or if some miracle happened and someone out-of-the-blue nabbed a nomination.  Today was no exception as the Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced and rising-star Patrick J. Adams’ name was announced for his work in the USA Network series SUITS.

Some critics were incredulous and some were ecstatic. Here at theTVaddict.com, we are among the ecstatic and are not at all incredulous at Patrick’s nomination.  In fact, it was well-deserved. [Read more…]

Lessons from LOST to ONCE UPON A TIME: Have Television Writers Been Given Too Much Creative License?

December 14, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 8 Comments

In the after-math of LOST, an interesting trend has begun to emerge in television viewing patterns:  viewers are now gun-shy of investing in serialized television.  Viewers are no longer willing to invest their time and energy into a show that may take them some place they do not want to go.

For LOST not only dared to kill off its principal characters, it ultimately killed off 9 of its 13 principal characters: Boone, Shannon, Charlie, Jack, John Locke, Sayid, Jin, Sun, Michael – leaving Kate, Sawyer, Hurley and Claire ambiguously alive, and who were revealed to be dead in the final episode. It also killed off a majority of its supporting characters, including Daniel Faraday, Charlotte, Danielle Rousseau, Alex, Juliet, Libby, Ana-Lucia, and Eko.

LOST became the “gold standard” in story-telling because it achieved the remarkable feat of luring in nearly 24 million viewers and ran 6 successful seasons, winning numerous awards along the way.  But, in the end, there was a significant amount of “viewer fatigue.”  Pulling in only 8 million viewers by its final episode, LOST is also a great example in how to disenfranchise an audience.

LOST secured its initial amazing viewership numbers because it offered an array of fascinating characters, so much so that viewers could not wait to learn more about each of them.  The breadcrumbs LOST offered were eagerly snatched-up and analyzed and it become part the cultural zeitgeist and popculture.

But it also became a television teaching-tool; it taught viewers that steadfast devotion is not necessarily rewarded in the end.  LOST broke too many hearts, upset its core fan-base and became a “shell” of its former self by the end.  The fact that it ended with the reveal that a large number of its characters were living in a version of purgatory awaiting their chance to “move on” as their fellow comrades joined them one-by-one in the after-life was thoroughly discouraging.  [Read more…]

ONCE UPON A TIME Redux: Why Do TV Shows Have To Break Our Heart?

December 12, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 8 Comments

One of my favorite new shows just broke everyone’s heart.  ONCE UPON A TIME is premised on the idea that Emma Swan is the key to breaking the Evil Queen’s curse and that she will bring back the “happy endings.”  But if this most recent episode is any indication, the curse is still alive and well — for Storybrooke is still a place where “happy endings” die.

Coming from the creators and writers of the episode “The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter,” Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (both former writers of LOST), ONCE UPON A TIME took a page out of the LOST-playbook and killed off a beloved principal character.  It was as if the one thing that we all dreaded the most has come back to haunt us – writers who dare to kill off characters.  In the past decade, television has become more enamored with the idea of raising-the-stakes and making TV shows more unpredictable by killing key characters.  Other shows have done it, but none more so and more heart-wrenchingly than LOST.  It was a show that we all both loved and loathed for various reasons.  But perhaps the greatest taboo that LOST ever broke was killing off beloved characters. Can Television Compete With the Holidays?

December 7, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

A funny thing happens this time of year, instead of television viewership increasing as viewers seek refuge from the cooler weather and the insanity of the holidays, television viewership actually declines.  It is as if viewers go into their own form of hibernation – seeking solitude from the difficulties of their life-stressors, the holidays, and the pressure of television which inundates them with commercials showing them everything they cannot afford to buy for Christmas and all the fantastic things they cannot participate in – whether it its due to financial restrictions, time constraints, or a lack of a “significant other” to share in the holiday revelry.

Television programmers shudder a bit this time of year.  It is a great time to secure last-minute profits in the form of advertising dollars as retailers and other businesses conduct their year-end push to lure in holiday shoppers.  But it also a time when seemingly “bullet proof” television shows take significant hits in the loss of viewers.  It may be a momentary blip on the ratings radar, or it may be a sign of eroding viewership.  It is enough to give television programmers and showrunners a minor heart-attack at the sudden drop. Emily Rose, Colin Ferguson and Eddie McClintock Dish on the Upcoming Syfy Holiday Episodes of HAVEN, EUREKA and WAREHOUSE 13

December 6, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

Fans are in for a spectacular treat this year!  In honor of the Christmas holiday, Syfy’s hottest shows whipped up a fun and fantastic episode just for the occasion.  On HAVEN, the inhabitants of the supernaturally-afflicted town of Haven start believing that it is Christmas in July – leaving Audrey Parker to track down the “troubled” person virtually on her own as she is the only one who knows that it could not possibly be Christmas.  Then on EUREKA, things take on a different look entirely as an adventure with a special storybook turns its inhabitants into all forms of animated cartoon and Claymation characters.  It’s a wild ride of misadventures until everyone can figure out how to return to the non-animated world for their holiday celebrations.  Then on WAREHOUSE 13, Pete steps in an alternate reality where he does not exist – or rather Pete Lattimer has not been born.  It is adventure for him as he works to persuade the Warehouse 13 team that he is indeed a Warehouse agent and that an artifact must be behind his new reality.

In a recent conference call with press, stars Emily Rose from HAVEN, Colin Ferguson from EUREKA and Eddie McClintock from WAREHOUSE 13 shared a bit about these fun holiday episodes and what it was like living in these alternate holiday worlds. [Read more…]
