Why LOST lost (an emmy nod)
Tom O’Neil writes a great piece for the LA TIMES on why LOST and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES are responsible for their own lack of EMMY success. Apparently, snagging Emmy Nominations is as complicated and strategic as winning the Superbowl. For a more concise answer, check out the article by clicking here.
An OFFICE Crossover?
According to the NYPOST, the third season of NBC’s THE OFFICE will feature a cross-over episode when members of the U.K. edition of THE OFFICE make an appearance at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton, PA. branch. Ben Silverman, the executive producer of the hit NBC Comedy says:
There’s a lot of love between [the casts and crews] of the two versions of the show, Expect some cameos from the U.K. paper company”
Silverman didn’t reveal any plot points, and wouldn’t spill the beans on which British cast members cross the pond. No doubt whatever THE OFFICE showrunners have up their sleeve will be fantastic, and definitely worth waiting for!
Arrested Development: The Movie?
According to Ali Shawkat (Arrested Development’s kissing cousin Maeby), there is a good possibility we may see an ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT movie in the future. In an interview with TVGUIDE Shawkat had this to say:
TVGuide.com: Do you think there might be an Arrested movie at some point? The final episode implied as much when your character, Maeby, tried to sell the rights to the Bluth story to Ron Howard.
Shawkat: Mitch actually recently told us that there is a good possibility for a movie, and that he’s talking to Ron Howard about it.
EVERWOOD’S BACK!
Okay that title was unnecessarily cruel, but the truth is, EVERWOOD is returning…. to Canadian TV. Staring this FALL 2006, VisionTV will begin airing EVERWOOD from the beginning. This is great news for Canadians who don’t have access to ABC Family (the US network that is airing EVERWOOD this fall). So until the WB finally comes to its senses and releases the rest of the series on DVD, fans of TV’s best drama will still be able to watch their favourite show.
BROTHERHOOD a Winner
A few years back, I completely missed the bandwagon that was THE SOPRANOS. With last night’s premiere of Showtime’s BROTHERHOOD (Canada’s Showtime equivalent TMN gave us a sneak peak) I made sure to tune in. After-all, I didn’t want to miss yet another gripping mob/family drama, and be left with nothing to talk about at the ‘watercooler’.
Let me be the first to say that after watching the first episode, I’ll be glued to my TV for the next 10. BROTHERHOOD revolves around the Caffee family – a typical American family living in Providence R.I. Of course like all good television, nothing is as it seems. Our two lead brothers lie on opposite ends of the moral spectrum. Tommy (Jason Clarke) is the hard working politician (or so he seems), who is happily married to Eileen (Annabeth Gish) (except for the fact she’s cheating on him). Michael (Jason Isaacs) is the mysterious older brother who just re-appeared after a six-year absence and has his own way of dealing with issues in the community (namely brutal and blood-soaked violence).
With fantastic acting, a really interesting location (I’ve never seen a show set in Providence before) and some fascinating story possibilities, BROTHERHOOD has the look of yet another winner for Showtime. No doubt critics will paint it as a Sopranos knock-off, but as someone who completely missed that bandwagon, I’m more then happy to hang out in Providence R.I. for the next 10 weeks.
Online: Everybody’s a TV Critic
The Sunday NYTimes has a really interesting article on the effect the internet has on TV. Author Maria Aspan interviews the creators of RESCUE ME (Peter Tolan), BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (Ronald D. Moore) and VERONICA MARS (Rob Thomas), discussing how seriously they take their rabid internet fans, or as Rob Thomas puts it, “a really big focus group.” MARS creator Rob Thomas even goes as far to say that his awareness of the fans’ reaction to Tessa Thompson’s character lead him to overcompensate and make her more likeable. Rob says:
“I feel like I sold out a little, She became a little saintly by the end. If I had to do it over again, I’d leave her a little more complicated.”
It’s a really interesting article, so click here to check it out.

FELICITY Question?
So I’ve been re-watching FELICITY from the beginning on Canada’s ‘W’ Network (Saturday mornings at 10am). Having never seen the series, I’ve been loving this JJ Abrams jem. My one question for seasoned FELICITY fans: What exactly does Sean do? I’m now up to season 3, and aside from a bunch of zany schemes to make money, and his never-ending documentary, how does he afford a killer loft in NYC? Another question:
Aside from that, the series is great. Felicity becomes way cooler as the series continues. Felicity’s whininess was the reason I didn’t enjoy the series initially. I thought the turning point for her character, at least for me, came when Felicity staged that sit-in at the medical clinic (best episode yet!) That said, I’m curious to see who Felicity ends up with in the end of the series. My guess is that she’ll choose Ben, but I actually enjoy the Felicity/Noel combo a lot more.
The Lauren Graham Emmy Snub
Over the past 24 hours, theTVaddict has received a lot of comments on how Lauren Graham was robbed once again for her long overdue Emmy Nomination. Here’s the thing, while Lauren Graham is the heart and soul of GILMORE GIRLS, she really didn’t deserve a nomination this year. Lauren Graham was submitted into the Lead Actress in a Comedy. Let me ask you this, what exactly was ‘funny’ about Lorelai’s storyline during this past season? Was it her crumbling relationship with Luke? Her drunken meltdown at Lane’s wedding? Or having to watch her gifted daughter throw her life away and drop out of college?
Don’t get me wrong, for five years Lauren Graham deserved a Lead Actress in a Comedy Emmy Nomination as much as anyone, but this year wasn’t it. Nothing about the trials and tribulations of Lorelai made me laugh this year. Let’s hope David Rosenthal puts the ‘funny’ back into Stars Hollow for what is most likely the final season.
