Truth be told, I only jumped on the HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER bandwagon near the end of last season — I think I may have missed this episode!

This morning, ABC announced that they’ve agreed to let the producers of LOST end the series on their terms — with one catch. Rather than two more seasons of twenty-two episodes, ABC will be getting three sixteen episode seasons. In an interview with Variety, ABC president Steve McPherson said:
“In considering the powerful storytelling of ‘Lost,’ we felt this was the only way to give it a proper creative conclusion.”
“I always said that we would allow the series to grow and give viewers the most compelling hour possible,” he added. “And, due to the unique nature of the series, we knew it would require an end date to keep the integrity and strength of the show consistent throughout, and to give the audience the payoff they deserve.”
Added Showrunner Carlton Cuse, “I think for story-based shows like ‘Lost,’ as opposed to franchise-based shows like ‘ER’ or ‘CSI,’ the audience wants to know when the story is going to be over. When J.K. Rowling announced that there would be seven ‘Harry Potter’ books, it gave the readers a clear sense of exactly what their investment would be. We want our audience to do the same.”
Simply put, the announcment this morning creates a rare win-win situation for all parties involved. With a set end date, showrunners Damon Lindeloff and Carlton Cuse get to see their creative vision through to the end, concluding the show on their terms. ABC gets to continue to line their coffers by stretching out the final two seasons of LOST into three. And most importantely, fans will not only have three more years to debate the finer points of the Dharma Initiative, a shortened sixteen episode season just eliminated the snooze inducing filler episodes (see: Hurley finds a Volkswagon). I wonder if Desmond saw this coming?
While it may currently be “on the bubble,” one thing can’t be denied: When LAW & ORDER is firing on all pistons, it’s unbeatable. This week’s episode did what the 17-year-old drama does best: Rip a story from the headlines (in this case the Shawn Hornbeck case) and then take it in a new and shocking direction. In that way, L&O has more in common with THE SIMPSONS than it’s crime fighting brethren. Think that’s a stretch? Consider this: Both L&O and THE SIMPSONS typically start with something that seems familiar and then go in exciting and unexpected directions.
If you’re not watching critically-adored but ratings-lacking shows such as VERONICA MARS or FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, shame on you… and don’t let us hear you complaining about the plethora of reality shows which will continue to flood the airwaves. THE SEARCH FOR THE NEXT PUSSYCAT DOLL drew in a significantly larger number of viewers than MARS, which normally aired in that timeslot. And that’s just sad.
Rumor has it that FOX will bring back the DOA Brad Garrett-led comedy ‘TIL DEATH based on how successful it was in the post-IDOL slot. Um, guys, you could get great ratings by running a test pattern in that slot. Before making a decision, run a few episodes of DEATH in a spot where it’ll have to earn its own living. Chances are you’ll find yourselves with another slot to fill. (Too bad you didn’t bother launching DRIVE in the post-IDOL slot. Maybe it would have stood a chance.)
What’s with AS THE WORLD TURNS’ cheestacular new opening? The show has a lot going for it these days, but the recently updated opening ain’t one of them. Heck, there are better fan-created openings on youtube!
Welcome to a new week for This Week on TV! Big stuff happening this week, including the season finales of The Amazing Race, George Lopez, The Unit, Jericho & others plus the premiere of Traveler on ABC, super-sized episodes of Thursday comedies on NBC and much more! So check it out!
Sunday, catch the season finale of The Amazing Race on CBS at 8/7c. It is down to Mirna and Charla, Eric and Danielle & Dustin and Kandice. I quit watching this season a few weeks in because I had read that M&C and D&K were 2 of the final 3 teams and I can’t stand either team. So I didn’t care who won. But for those that do, I hope you enjoy tonight’s ep! 🙂
Also on tonight:
Lucky for fans of THE SIMPSONS, theTVaddict has a mole inside Springfield’s Counter Truancy Unit (CTU). While intel’s still a bit fuzzy, one thing is clear — school bullies Dolph, Kearney and Jimbo are threteaning to unleash a stink bomb at the school’s bake sale on May 20th.
theTVaddict’s also learned that CTU members Bart and Lisa have beefed up security in an effort to stop the ‘Springfield Three’. Jack Bauer and Chloe O’Brian (guest voices Keifer Sutherland and Mary Lynn Rajsku) have arrived in Springfield to lend a hand. Be sure to tune in to THE SIMPSONS 400th episode on Sunday May 20 (8-9PM FOX) to find out what happens.

E! Online is reporting that ABC is set to announce that LOST will officially come to an end in two seasons.
While this news may come as a shock to fans of the show, LOST addicts should take solace in the fact that a five season arc is exactly what show-runners Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindeloff have been hoping for. In fact, on more than one occasion, the dynamic duo of writing have publicly stated that their plan for LOST calls for five seasons. Anything more would hurt the show’s credibility and story — transforming it from the masterpiece it currently is, to an X-FILES-like season nine mess (our words, not theirs).
Simply put, an end date for LOST is the best thing that could possibly happen to the show. It gives Lindeloff and Cuse an exact time frame in which to plan the two best possible seasons ever and ensure the show ends off on a high note — until the inevitable movie of course.
Frankly, if this story comes to fruition, ABC deserves serious credit for allowing LOST to continue as one of the most original and daring series on television. It’s not often that a television network chooses artistic integrity over money.
I don’t know if it’s due to exhaustion (‘Mac’ likes to wake me up at the crack of dawn), rip-off airlines (yes I’m talking to you Air Canada, why does it cost me $800 to fly to San Diego for Comic Con ’07?), or the fact that my Entertainment Weekly never seems to arrive in my mailbox on Fridays anymore — but theTVaddict is in a bad mood.
Hence this post. Nothing cures the blahs like getting a few things off ones chest. So here it goes, theTVaddict’s list of things he’s angry about this week in the world of television.
What’s the deal with last night’s episode of THE OFFICE? Could Dwight be any dumber? How does he not recognize a sketch of himself? If somebody drew me with a moustache, I think I’d figure out, and I’m not even a volunteer sheriff. Oh, and while I’m on the subject of THE OFFICE — men hanging out in the ladies luxurious bathroom. It’s already been done. See NEWSRADIO five years ago.
UGLY BETTY is almost perfect. The only thing that’s holding the show back back is the seriously lame story-line of Alexis and Bradford Meade. Memo to Alexis: Who cares that your daddy doesn’t love you, get over it… you’re a freakin’ Millionaire Super Model.
GLOBAL TV. I pay good money to receive your channel in High Definition. What do I expect in return, well umm — high definition content. Can you please explain why this weeks episodes of HEROES and GILMORE GIRLS are not in HD, even when they air on Global TV HD?
ALEXIS BLEDEL — if you think you’ll ever be able to rid yourself of your Rory Gilmore persona, think again. I’ve seen your movies and you pretty much playing a variation of yourself every time. Not that you asked my opinion, but here it goes. I would have taken the money for thirteen more episodes…. odds are you’re going to (one day) need it.
WOW, I feel better already. Getting stuff off your chest seriously works. Post away with your own TV grievances, you’ll feel better guaranteed!
Since it’s Friday, and theTVaddict is bitter at how few votes he has in the 2007 Blogger’s Choice Awards tired, we thought we’d offer up some of our favourite TV news from around the web.
Tonight is your last chance to vote for your favourite show on VH1’s ACCEPTABLE TV. What mini-show are you voting for? Operation Kitten Calendar or Mr. Sprinkles
Wondering which TV Pilots are generating the most positive buzz? Deadline Hollywood handicaps this year’s crop and talks about what shows have the best chance of making the nets’ fall schedule.
BuzzSugar writers have posted their STOP ONE SHOW! results. Click here to discover which show TV fans desperately want off the air. TheTVaddict’s pick: AMERICAN DAD — the poor mans FAMILY GUY, which is actually the poor mans SIMPSONS.
In an interview taped for Tuesday’s ELLEN DEGENERES SHOW Lauren Graham spoke out about the end of GILMORE GIRLS:
It was a conversation that was going on for a long time it’s not a surprise. I think it’s a really a good thing… It’s the best thing for the show and I feel really good about it.
One of the CW’s most popular shows comes to an end on May 17.
