THE MUSKETEERS: Previewing BBC America’s Latest Take on the Fab Four!

Loosely based on the Alexandre Dumas book “The Three Musketeers,” the new BBC America series THE MUSKETEERS introduces the adventures of Athos (Tom Burke), Aramis (Santiago Cabrera), Porthos (Howard Charles), and D’Artagnan (Luke Pasqualino) all over again. But the rip-roaring adventures of THE MUSKETEERS are not content with just three musketeers, but must have four. After all, four is better than three, or so goes the debate in the show for D’Artagnan does not immediately see the benefit of joining up against the three men who may have committed a crime against his family.

Joining in the fun are also Cardinal Armand Richelieu (Peter Capaldi, who will also be on DOCTOR WHO last this summer), Milady de Winter (Maimie McCoy), King Louis XIII (Ryan Gage), Queen Anne (Alexandra Dowling), and Constance Bonacieux (Tamla Kari). The Cardinal and Milady are notorious opponents of the Musketeers who never stop plotting in their downfall for their own devious motives. King Louis and Queen Anne view the Musketeers as their personal guard and yet with the shifting political alliances, the favor comes and goes depending on the most pressing need at the time. And Constance is woman who just finds herself caught up in the adventures and yet seems to enjoy all the attention and thrills it brings. After all, the Musketeers are quite dashing young men who carry the favor of the King.

While the show does offer a healthy dose of adventure, sword fights, and political intrigue, one of the best ingredients used throughout the series is romance. One cannot have dashing heroes without a lady or two to appreciate their exploits, after all. If it is not the star-crossed love of Athos and Milady, it is D’Artagnan and Aramis with their multitude of lady loves. This is a time of swashbuckling love affairs and THE MUSKETEERS dares to dabble in the affairs of the heart; and for what would a hero be without a lady or two to cheer him on and worry after him as he fights to defend her honor or the crown itself.

THE MUSKETEERS is full of grand adventure with a light dose of romance and more double-crosses and spy intrigue than you would think for one small royal court. It certainly deserves a peek to see why it has fans already swooning over it.

THE MUSKETEERS makes its 90-minute debut on Sunday, June 22nd at 9:00 p.m. on BBC America.
