Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Positives That Might Come Out of UGLY BETTY’s Cancellation
Thanks to fourth season creative resurgence, UGLY BETTY, unlike HEROES, PRISON BREAK and/or NIP/TUCK will go out on top. Particularly since…
…ABC had the courtesy to inform BETTY’s producers early enough to ensure they’ll have the time necessary to craft a satisfying conclusion to the series. Said both the network and producers in a statement released earlier today, “We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this UGLY BETTY’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”
Creator Silvio Horta will soon have the free time necessary to develop the Marc (Michael Urie) and Amanda (Becki Newton) spin-off fans have been clamouring for. Said Horta in a recent interview with theTVaddict.com, “Obviously I think Michael [Urie] and Becki [Newton] are amazing but my focus right now is keeping this show going and getting it to a fifth season. That said, anything is possible and of course, out of all the character on the show that have spin-off potential, Marc and Amanda are the most natural choices. They’re terrific and the amazing chemistry they’ve got is so rare.”
Good News, Bad News: GILMORE GIRLS, HEROES & SMALLVILLE
Good News: GILMORE GIRLS creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Dan Palladino are returning to the CW, with the network giving the green light to their UNTITLED WYOMING PROJECT which is said to revolve around a family horse farm in the Midwest. Bad News: For the future of Sherman-Palladino’s HBO series, remember that? [Source]
Good News: HEROES is making headlines for something other than its sinking ratings. Bad News: Adrian Pasdar busted for a DUI.
Good News: For SMALLVILLE fans, who thanks to today’s announcement by the CW that they’ve picked up a reboot of the 90’s action-thriller LA FEMME NIKITA may have found the ideal time slot companion for a possible 10th season of their favorite show. Bad News: For those of us who were hoping the success of LIFE UNEXPECTED might have paved the way for more original ideas on the network that has yet to meet a book, movie and/or 90’s franchise with name recognition that they haven’t wanted to turn into a hit. Review: Stephen Colbert’s THE WØRD
Combining two of our favorite addictions, theTVaddict.com has begun periodically turning off the TV in order to review TV-related iPhone Apps.
Whether you’ve been too busy watching Letterman and Conan rip Jay Leno a new one, or simply getting too old to stay up past THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART, Comedy Central has now made the best part of THE COLBERT REPORT available at your fingertips with their handy little iPhone App THE WØRD.
What Works: In a word, everything. Thanks to the ability to search for ‘Wørds’ by air date, popularity, or alphabetically and stream them over both Wi-Fi and/or 3G networks at the touch of a finger, fans can now enjoy Stephen Colbert’s THE WØRD when they want where they want it. Which means that your lineup at the grocery store, coffee shop or DMV just got a helluva lot more bearable courtesy of a countless number of four-to-seven minute ‘Wørds’ (updated weekly) nestled squarely in the palm of your hand. Plus, unlike the FAMILY GUY App, the ‘Wørds’ stream commercial free (Although we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that unobtrusive banner ads do appear at the bottom of your screen while you search through clips.)

GREEK (10PM ABC Family)
When GREEK returns for its fourth season tonight, the campus of Cyprus Rhodes University is rife with worry. But while the ZBZ’s fret that their role in last season’s Gamma Psi fire will come to light, the KT’s stress over their expelled brothers, Clavin’s roomie Grant stresses over the repercussions of coming out and Dale and Rusty lose sleep over who will be awarded their much-coveted engineering grant — your very own TV Addict has a far more pressing concern. Namely, is this the last opportunity we’ll have to post about a GREEK season premiere with ABC Family so clearly having shifted their focus away from this once hit show to more teen-centric fare such as THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER, MAKE IT OR BREAK IT and 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU. Seriously people, now more than ever, your pals at CRU need you to tune in tonight and if you get the chance, please visit savegreek.com to find out how you can help.
Spotted: Chace Crawford’s Newest Squeeze!
Following in the illustrious footsteps of GOSSIP GIRL’s Blair Waldorf, Serena Van Der Woodsen and Vanessa Abrams is… Meg Griffin? Sure looks like it, with the upcoming January 31st episode of FAMILY GUY entitled “Dial Meg for Murder,” featuring Meg getting thrown into the big house when she gets busted for hiding her jail bird boyfriend Luke (guest voiced by Chace Crawford). More first look photos of which can be found after the jump.
Review: DAMAGES Season 3
If two seasons of DAMAGES has taught this TV Addict anything, it’s that those who say “No” to Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) do so at their own peril.
Which is why, rather than join Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) in turning our backs on New York’s most powerful litigator following two years packed with a seemingly endless cadre of characters and a parade of plot twists so complex they make LOST feel like an easy-to-follow CBS procedural — here we go again, ready and willing to dive in for another season.
Viewers concerned that tonight’s season premiere opens with Parsons trying to move on with her life as a upstanding member of the New York City District Attorney office needn’t be. After-all, Patty Hewes is to the legal profession what Dexter Morgan is to dolling out justice. We may not agree with their methods, but there is absolutely no arguing with the fact that, dammit, they get results. Which means, the question is not so much if Parsons will be brought back into the fold, but when. Particularly with the third season of the FX legal thriller pitting Hewes against her most challenging and potentially dangerous adversary to date: Lily Tomlin.
Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Celebs Who Should Be Hosting SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
Okay, at this point, we’ve gotten used to seen SNL serve up sketches that are moderately funny at best and about as topical as a copy of Time magazine from 2006, but must their hosts be plucked from the recycling pile as well? With all due respect to MAD MEN’s Jon Hamm (slated to host the supposed laffer on January 30) or camera spokesmodel Ashton Kutcher (February 6), we humbly offer up a few ideas for hosts who don’t come with their own “Been There, Done That, Hosted SNL” t-shirts.
Zachary Levi
NBC obviously knows they have a potential hit in the slow-to-grow CHUCK as evidenced by the ad campaigns devoted to it (not to mention their not putting our favorite Buy More employee on the shelf), so why not give the show’s star a shot in the host slot? Could prove to be a mutually advantageous situation for both shows.
Joel McHale
Live from New York… it’s the bitingly-funny star of COMMUNITY, the funniest NBC comedy that you’re not watching. And given that the guy used to still hosts THE SOUP — which is often funnier on an off day than SNL at its best — he knows a thing or two about bringin’ the funny.
Tina Majorino: When Child Stars Go Good
It’s the most important question facing young actors in Hollywood today. How does one avoid becoming a child star cliché?
Well, if you’re actress Tina Majorino, who spent the majority of her youth growing up on screen in a string of high profile films including Corinna, Corrinna, Waterworld and Alice in Wonderland. You avoid a starring role in the E! Network “Child Stars Gone Bad!” Special by taking a break from the business at the tender age of 13. A decision that Majorino credits as the best one of her life.
“Having worked since I was a baby, I was tired and just wanted to be kid,” explained the talented young actress who between 1999 and 2004 retired from acting to return to school, dance and spend time with friends and family. “I wanted that time to get to know myself and make sure that acting was what I really wanted to do. I didn’t want to half ass it and wanted to make sure I was completely committed to my art.”
A risky career move that now seems to be paying big dividends. Now all grown up (25!) Majorino, who this TV Addict had the chance to chat with at the recent Television Critics Press Tour in Pasadena couldn’t be more well-adjusted and credits her ‘wonderful family and friends’ for ensuring she remained what we like to think of as ‘the anti-Lohan.’
