TV On DVD: Peyton Place
Long before shows such as PICKET FENCES or DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES turned their eye toward small-town life, the entire nation was titillated by the shocking events which unfolded in a tiny New England town known as Peyton Place, first brought to life in the 1956 novel by Grace Metalious. And when the fledling ABC network was looking for a show on which to build it’s reputation in 1964, they decided to bring the book-turned-film to life via a primetime serial which aired twice (and eventually three times) a week, captivating the nation with its tales of unwed teens, abusive husbands and all matter of family dysfunction.
Now, the folks at Shout Factory have released the first 31 episodes of the primetime drama (with a second 31-episode set due to be released on July 14). So how does the show hold up some 45 years later? Better than it’s modern-day counterparts. For where today’s soaps tend to focus on splashy tales about tornadoes (ALL MY CHILDREN), Mob wars (GENERAL HOSPITAL) and psychos-du-jour (AS THE WORLD TURNS), PEYTON PLACE takes us back to a time when plots were character-driven as opposed to event-driven.
Our Summer Survival Guide Day 1: TV
If you’re anything like this TV Addict (read: hopelessly addicted to television), you may have found yourself with an alarming amount of free time on your hands since last Thursday — the day our beloved television season officially came to a close.
Deep breath, don’t panic, September is just around the corner. Or so we keep telling ourselves. Because the unfortunate reality of the situation is that September is in fact, not just around the corner. Which is why theTVaddict.com is going to spend the next few days offering up our “Summer Survival Guide.” Alternatives to the painful mix of reality TV, reruns and third-rate miniseries/ movies the major networks are trying to pass off as entertainment.
But before we get into those alternatives which include the worlds of TV on DVD, books and online, we first thought we should offer up five reason why you may not want to cancel your cable just yet.
WEEDS [Showtime, June 8]
Mary Louise Parker, America’s sexiest and arguably most irresponsible mother is back! And while critics and discerning fans have been quick to proclaim that the Botwin’s clans move to the border was a mistake of shark jumping proportions, WEEDS (alongside HBO’s ENTOURAGE, 30 ROCK and HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER) remain to this day one of the only comedies that without fail, always leaves us jonesin’ for more. Also this summer on Showtime: NURSE JACKIE (June 8th)
Tonight’s TV Addictions: May 25, 2009
WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
GREEK (8PM ABC Family)
Up against repeats of THE BIG BANG THEORY, HOUSE and ONE TREE HILL you officially have no excuse to watch the best show you’re not already watching.
NEW & NOTABLE:
JON & KATE PLUS EIGHT (9PM TLC)
The fifth season premieres amidst controversy and tabloid headlines turning Jon, Kate and the eight into Jon & Kate plus a thousand or so paparazzi following their every move. Awkward.

THREE RIVERS
According to the official CBS description: THREE RIVERS is a medical drama that goes inside the emotionally complex lives of organ donors, the recipients and the surgeons at the preeminent transplant hospital in the country where every moment counts.
According to this TV Addict: With apologies to his legions of dedicated, passionate and very vocal fanbase, Alex O’Loughlin deserves far better than a re-tread of a failed TNT medical drama (see: HEARTLAND starring EVERWOOD alum Treat Williams)

THE DEEP END
According to the official ABC description: Sterling Law is one of L.A.’s most prestigious law firms. Each year it recruits four new young lawyers from the finest law schools worldwide. It will nurture, guide and shape these recruits into the best damned lawyers they can possibly be — or else.
According to this TV Addict: It’s GREY’S ANATOMY meets L.A. LAW. Which is something we’d usually be far more critical of, except for the fact that these lawyers include JACK & BOBBY’S Matt Long! VERONICA MARS’ Tina Majorino! TITANIC’s Billy Zane! And Broadway’s Norbert Leo Butz! (TV Addict note: Gratuitous use of exclamation marks denotes our off-the-charts level of excitement for this series)
ABC Unveils Fall 2009 Schedule
This morning Stephen McPherson, ABC Entertainment Group president, revealed ABC’s plans for next season and unveiled the network’s 2009-10 fall schedule. Plans that can be summed up in four words: A Bet on Comedy (ABC, get it?)
Adding to the already solid lineup which include the inexplicable ratings juggernaut that is DANCING WITH THE STARS, CASTLE, GREY’S ANATOMY, PRIVATE PRACTICE, UGLY BETTY, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and BROTHERS & SISTERS are a slew of high profile new Wednesday night comedies which include Kelsey Grammer’s HANK, Patricia Heaton’s THE MIDDLE, Ed O’Neill’s MODERN FAMILY and Courteney Cox’s COUGAR TOWN. Also on for the fall is the Jerry Bruckheimer procedural THE FORGOTTEN, the high concept sci-fi series FLASH FORWARD and EASTWICK based on the popular movie THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK.
Being held for midseason are returning favorites LOST, SCRUBS, BETTER OFF TED and THE BACHELOR alongside new offerings V (a re-boot of the 80’s classic) and HAPPY TOWN (a small town murder mystery from the brains behind LIFE ON MARS and OCTOBER ROAD).
Full schedule after the jump with “Snap Judgements” following ABC’s upfront presentation later in the day.

GLEE
According to the official FOX description: After a special preview event airing tomorrow, Tuesday, May 19, GLEE, the distinctive new comedy from Ryan Murphy (NIP/TUCK) starring Jane Lynch (The 40 YEAR-OLD VIRGIN) and newcomers Matthew Morrison (Broadway’s “Hairspray”), Lea Michele (“Spring Awakening”) and Cory Monteith (KYLE XY), will enter its freshman year this fall. Combining biting humor with a soundtrack of hit music from past to present, the inventive series follows an optimistic high school teacher who – against all odds – attempts to restore McKinley High’s fading Glee Club to its former glory, while helping a group of underdogs realize their true star potential.
According to the TV Addict: We’re GLEE-ful in anticipation. So much so that you’ll definitely want to return to theTVaddict.com tomorrow… trust us.
