Review: GIRLS

April 15, 2012 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

Full disclosure: Having spent the better part of the past month watching television critic after television critic tweet their infatuation with GIRLS, there’s no denying that our expectations prior to screening the first three episodes of HBO’s newest comedy series may have been just slightly off the charts. That said, there’s also no denying that we now find ourselves out on the proverbial limb as quite possibly the only television critic-blogger-type to have not fallen head over heels in love with this show. In an effort to fill the void that is yet another REVENGE free Wednesday night, we here at theTVaddict.com wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that when the deliciously addictive ABC series does return, it will do so in a big way. Case in point, the April 25th episode entitled “Justice” that will not only introduce an old friend of Victoria’s into the fold (played by ROME’s James Purefoy) and possibly mark the beginning of the end of Declan’s relationship with Charlotte following some very damning testimony, but more importantly will reveal to Emily the identity of the mysterious man who murdered her father. Paley Festival 2012 Live Blog: REVENGE

March 12, 2012 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

1:25PM: Back again following Saturday’s VAMPIRE DIARIES panel, TV Guide Magazine’s Debra Birnbaum introduces members from the cast and creative team of REVENGE including Nick Wechsler (Jack), Ashley Madekwe (Ashley), Josh Bowman (Daniel), Henry Czerny (Conrad), Executive Producer Marty Bowen, Madeleine Stowe (Victoria), Creator Mike Kelley, Emily VanCamp (Emily), Gabriel Mann (Nolan), Connor Paulo (Declan) and Christa B. Allen (Charlotte)

1:26PM: We just discovered that Josh Bowman has a British accent!

1:27PM: “The plan was it to always be Tyler,” admits Kelley following a first question that has moderator Debra Birnbaum wondering if the plan was always for it to be Tyler’s dead body on the beach. “The audience would have freaked out if we had killed Daniel and turned off the TV in droves!”

1:30PM: “We have an idea where we want this season to end and obviously we’re ending with a cliffhanger!” says Kelley on his overall plan for the rest of the season. “If we’re lucky enough to get a second season we’re going to see another giant event that will resolve somewhat through midseason allowing us the opportunity to play through with the aftermath, which is what you’ll see over the course of the next few episodes this season. With the final two episodes of the season really setting up some new drama, alliances and incidents.” [Read more…]

14 Episodes in the Making, We Preview Tonight’s Killer Episode of REVENGE

February 15, 2012 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

Revenge is always a dish served cold.  But defying that expectation, the television series REVENGE has invited viewers to a Fire & Ice Ball celebrating the engagement of Emily Thorne and Daniel Grayson.  Upon receiving his invitation, Nolan Ross had taunted Emily, “Oh, was fire and brimstone not available?”  Emily may have ice in her veins, taking the time needed to plot out and destroy Victoria Grayson, but her fury rages like a burning fire in her heart.

Thus, the Fire & Ice Ball is to be a night of crowning achievement as Emily’s long-orchestrated plans come together.  She has secured a marriage proposal from the son of her arch-nemesis and she can finally implement the next phase of her dastardly plan to destroy Victoria Grayson – the woman who seduced and betrayed Emily’s father.  In Emily’s defense, Victoria’s crimes are heinous and she deserves every bit of retribution that Emily has in store for her.  It is just unfortunate that Daniel is caught in the cross-hairs. Lessons from LOST to ONCE UPON A TIME: Have Television Writers Been Given Too Much Creative License?

December 14, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 8 Comments

In the after-math of LOST, an interesting trend has begun to emerge in television viewing patterns:  viewers are now gun-shy of investing in serialized television.  Viewers are no longer willing to invest their time and energy into a show that may take them some place they do not want to go.

For LOST not only dared to kill off its principal characters, it ultimately killed off 9 of its 13 principal characters: Boone, Shannon, Charlie, Jack, John Locke, Sayid, Jin, Sun, Michael – leaving Kate, Sawyer, Hurley and Claire ambiguously alive, and who were revealed to be dead in the final episode. It also killed off a majority of its supporting characters, including Daniel Faraday, Charlotte, Danielle Rousseau, Alex, Juliet, Libby, Ana-Lucia, and Eko.

LOST became the “gold standard” in story-telling because it achieved the remarkable feat of luring in nearly 24 million viewers and ran 6 successful seasons, winning numerous awards along the way.  But, in the end, there was a significant amount of “viewer fatigue.”  Pulling in only 8 million viewers by its final episode, LOST is also a great example in how to disenfranchise an audience.

LOST secured its initial amazing viewership numbers because it offered an array of fascinating characters, so much so that viewers could not wait to learn more about each of them.  The breadcrumbs LOST offered were eagerly snatched-up and analyzed and it become part the cultural zeitgeist and popculture.

But it also became a television teaching-tool; it taught viewers that steadfast devotion is not necessarily rewarded in the end.  LOST broke too many hearts, upset its core fan-base and became a “shell” of its former self by the end.  The fact that it ended with the reveal that a large number of its characters were living in a version of purgatory awaiting their chance to “move on” as their fellow comrades joined them one-by-one in the after-life was thoroughly discouraging.  [Read more…]
