THE GOOD WIFE! GOTHAM! SCANDAL! THE MINDY PROJECT! The TV Addict Week in Rewind

September 26, 2014 By Richard M. Simms Leave a Comment

mindy project cast

Best Guest Star: THE MINDY PROJECT scored a homerun by casting Rhea Pearlman as Danny’s TV Guide loving, girlfriend hating hypercritical mom, Annette. Here’s hoping she swings by from time to time!

Best First Impression: Despite being on screen for less than a minute, Cory Michael Smith managed to perfectly capture Edward Nigma — aka The Riddler — in the pilot of GOTHAM.

Most Relatable Moment: SLEEPY HOLLOW’s Ichabod may be, like, 250 years old, but everyone who’s ever been the victim of an unwanted surprise party nodded when he declared, “Is there no end to this birthday madness?”

Least Consequential Death: While the two-hour finale of DALLAS’ third season featured great moments and numerous cliffhangers, the highly-touted “Which Ewing will die?” teaser wound up being kinda pointless. Does anybody really care that Christopher — who was barely even in the episode — bit the dust?

Best Passing Glance: SCANDAL delivered on just about everything fans could want… especially in that closing shot of Olivia and Fitz walking past one another, eyes straight ahead, fingers practically twitching with the desire to touch… never has a scene with so little physical contact caused so much swooning. THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL! STALKER! DANCING WITH THE STARS! GENERAL HOSPITAL! The TV Addict Week in Rewind

September 19, 2014 By Richard M. Simms Leave a Comment

aubrey plaza

Best Casting: Aubrey Plaza, perhaps best known as the slow-speaking, sarcastic secretary-from-hell April on PARKS & RECREATION, will give voice to the slow-speaking, sarcastic pet-from-hell in Lifetime’s GRUMPY CAT’S WORST CHRISTMAS EVER. Finally, a holiday special for us Grinches!

Generic Rebranding Of The Week: The TV Guide Network will now be known as “Pop,” promising to celebrate fandom with a “fun, enthusiastic and celebratory approach [that won’t be’ mean-spirited or snarky.” Guess that means the Twitterverse won’t be taking part!

Most Likely To Bring About Change: Forget public outcry. Want to know what’s going to cause the NFL to take series action against their violence-exhibiting players? The fact that Anheuser-Busch is “not yet satisfied with the league’s handling” of the situation. Forget bros-before-hos, kids, cause when it comes to sponsors, it’s all about payers-before-players.

Best Calling-Out: Finally, someone called THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL’s Hope out on the fact that she married Wyatt because Liam was, like, 45 seconds late. “You never thought it could be a flight delay or bad traffic or tuberculosis or the flu?” asked Quinn. “You needed an excuse to marry the brother of your fiancée!” [Read more…]

MASTERS OF SEX! BIG BROTHER! THE LEFTOVERS! GENERAL HOSPITAL! The TV Addict Week in Rewind

August 29, 2014 By Richard M. Simms Leave a Comment

Annaleigh Ashford masters of sex

Most Needed Integration: Just when we were thinking that MASTERS OF SEX’s Betty — played by the awesome Annaleigh Ashford — had become completely disconnected from the main story, she landed a job as Masters and Johnson’s secretary!

Scariest Performance: Billy Magnussen was downright terrifying as alter ego Eric went on a killing spree in the finale of the underappreciated WE series THE DIVIDE.

Most Needed Break: The wildly bleak THE LEFTOVERS gave us an episode in which all of the characters were happy — relatively speaking — until the final moments.

Best Match: After being dissed by the various women he asked out on a date, BACHELOR IN PARADISE’s Kalon proved to be both a loser and loner by taking himself out on the town. “Welcome to the first one on none date,” he told cameras.

Most Efficient Use Of Time: When not shooting his literal partner-in-crime or being harangued by the ladies he’d kidnapped, GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Levi found time to dash out to a Supercuts and ditch his long, flowing locks for a stylish new ’do!

Smartest Decision: Viewers voted not to reward BIG BROTHER’s Team America for the lame play they put on as part of a self-created challenge. “We decided to do something very entertaining,” said mastermind Frankie, proving not to understand the meaning of that word. [Read more…]

OUTLANDER! DOWNTON ABBEY! THE WALKING DEAD! GENERAL HOSPITAL! MISTRESSES! BIG BROTHER! The TV Addict Week in Rewind

August 15, 2014 By Richard M. Simms Leave a Comment

Screen-Shot-2014-08-14-at-1.57

Funniest “Blooper”: An official DOWNTON ABBEY photo features Lady Edith, her loving father… and a very modern plastic water bottle!

Best Comeback: After being left hanging by Caleb, BIG BROTHER’s Frankie still managed to win a two-man competition all by himself.

Shortest Strike: A walk-out by SURVIVOR’s editors ended a day later when their issues were addressed by the production company.

Biggest Irony: With its programming increasingly being hate-watched and debunked, it would appear that Shark Week has, in fact, jumped the shark.

Quickest Wedding: Moments after being stood up by would-be beau Liam, THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL’s Hope took the plunge (literally) by jumping into a marriage with his brother, Wyatt, and leaping off a yacht! [Read more…]

THE LEFTOVERS! 24! ONCE UPON A TIME! GENERAL HOSPITAL! The TV Addict Week in Rewind

August 1, 2014 By Richard M. Simms Leave a Comment

lupjfkr2ntjd596hyzim

Proof “They” Don’t Always Know: Despite media experts telling anyone who’d listen that SHARKNADO 2 would prove a ratings disappointment, the cheesy sequel brought in 3.9 million viewers to set a record for SyFy Channel flicks.

Hardest To Watch: While the Guilty Remnant have creeped us out from the very beginning of THE LEFTOVERS, the stoning death of Gladys was downright brutal… even for this relentlessly depressing series.

Least Shocking Shocker: Come on… given everything you’ve ever read about Kiefer Sutherland, are you really surprised by allegations that he’s a pain in the butt to work with?

Best Return: Ah, it’s so good having bad girl Kristen DiMera (and portrayer Eileen Davidson) back on DAYS OF OUR LIVES!

Cheekiest Theft: If you were hoping to see more of sexy Detective Hosko on REVENGE next season, you’re outta luck. Portrayer Tyler Jacob Moore — best known as SHAMELESS’ Tony — was grabbed up by ONCE UPON A TIME, where he’ll play Frozen’s Prince Hans. [Read more…]

TCA 2014: Quick Takes From the WGN America, Discovery and BBC America TCA Presentations

July 10, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

manhattan wgn america

Day 2 of the 16-day biannual Television Critic’s Association Summer 2014 Press Tour started off with introductions of new programming from Discovery, WGN America and BBC America. The following is a snapshot look at their new series, as well as what was noteworthy from the featured presentations.

WGN AMERICA
“Manhattan” is a new drama series set back in the 1940’s when the U.S. government was striving to discover the secret to make an atomic bomb. It tells the stories of the men and women who were scientists, mathematicians, soldiers and the wives that had to keep this massive secret and were not even sure what the end goal was at the time. Invoking the nostalgia from the era, the show plays like a classic movie with each episode a new chapter in a dark tale of trying to live a normal life in the midst of an extraordinary situation. With secrets and classified material embruing their entire world, there is an underlying boiling tension. It becomes a question of who can you really trust and is the government telling them everything they need to know about their highly confidential mission. The show appears to captured the innate glamour of the era with classic cars and stylish clothing while merging it with the dusty, secret-filled world of a town that was not even allowed to have a name. Apparently, it was just too dangerous to even be a name on the map. (Premieres July 27, 2014.) [Read more…]

May 27, 2014 By Richard M. Simms Leave a Comment

the-haves-and-have-nots-16x9

It’s mother versus mother and friend versus friend as THE HAVES AND THE HAVES NOTS returns tonight at 9 p.m., and Renee Lawless warns that her alter ego, rich bitch Katheryn Cryer is in full-blown take-no-prisoners mode!

As the second half of Season 2 kicks off, Wyatt has been arrested, and Lawless says Katheryn is “all about getting her son out of jail!” Unfortunately, that could mean that battle lines will be drawn between Katheryn and her maid/gal pal, Hanna, whose own son is still fighting for his life! Preview: PETALS ON THE WIND

May 26, 2014 By Richard M. Simms Leave a Comment

petals-on-the-wind-cast-lifetime-wyatt-nash-rose-mciver-heather-graham

Move over, Andi “The Bachelorette” Dorfman, ’cause you ain’t the only chick with issues competing for our attention tonight! Make room for Cathy Dollanganger, aka the brother-loving, mother-hating, revenge-seeking heroine of PETALS ON THE WIND, the Lifetime movie sequel to FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC airing this eveningt at 9 p.m. EST.

If there’s one downside to this camp fest, it’s that the network — which greenlit PETALS about six seconds after seeing how well its predecessor performed — didn’t think to make it a mini-series. Instead, it jumps forward 10 years (explaining why the young leads had to be recast), skipping one of the more twisted sections of the source material, which is truly saying something given the creepy tale spun by author V.C. Andrews.

For the uninitiated, FLOWERS was the tale of four children locked in an attic by a mother desperate to inherit money from a dying father who believed her marriage to her half-uncle had not produced any children. While locked away, the older siblings, Christopher and Cathy, wound up having sex, while younger brother Cory was killed by poisoned donuts.

Yeah, it’s that kinda story. [Read more…]
