TV NOW: How Important is the “Water-Coolerness” Factor for Today’s Television?

With the rapidly changing face of television (in the way it is consumed and the way it is made available), it is hard to define just what is “television” today. Viewers are watching shows both on traditional television sets and online, via smartphones, tablets and other devices. Viewers are also refusing to be locked into the traditional model of primetime timeslots and are choosing instead to use DVRs, On Demand, and using online options to watch shows any time they want. So with the medium of television becoming more fluid and esoteric, it also begs the question: how important is the “water cooler” factor anymore? Do viewers feel compelled to watch TV shows at scheduled times in order to be a part of the global conversation, or are they okay with the hot topic of the day passing them by? [Read more…]
You Be the Critic: Showtime’s RAY DONOVAN

With DEXTER kicking off its eight and final season this Sunday June 30th, it should come as little surprise that Showtime isn’t wasting any time building buzz on their next big thing. Case in point, yesterday’s release of the first episode of the network’s new crime drama RAY DONOVAN. Bowing in the plum post-DEXTER timeslot at 10PM, DONOVAN stars Liev Schreiber as the titular character who does the dirty work for L.A.’s top power players making the problems of the city’s celebrities, superstar athletes and business moguls disappear. But hey, don’t take our word for it, see the slightly censored full length pilot for yourself after the jump. [Read more…]
TV Today: Lessons from the 2012-2013 TV Season

Television is rarely perceived as a teaching tool, but given the fact that the average person spends an average of 4 hours a day watching TV, it can be. So sometimes clever TV shows manage to embed either instruction or social commentary messages in their show. For example, over the years, I learned the benefits of replacing your toothbrush frequently from BONES, the health benefits of yogurt from BURN NOTICE and how a hot cup of tea can disarm just about anyone from THE MENTALIST. So looking back over the 2012-2013 TV season, I began to wonder what exactly I learned from some of the TV shows I watched. While it is true that most did not truly seek to impart some real world advice or moral message, it was curious what I took away from each.
All fun intended, here’s what I remember: [Read more…]

TV Today: Why We Love Anti-Heroes

If you are a TV aficionado, then you have probably been hearing the term “anti-hero” a lot in the past decade. In fact, Showtime has made a fortune off of its “anti-hero” platform showcasing its series DEXTER, WEEDS, HOMELAND, NURSE JACKIE, CALIFORNICATION, as well as its upcoming new series RAY DONOVAN. These are perfect examples of shows that feature the joys and triumphs of “anti-heroes.”
But recently the “anti-hero” craze seems to have reached such a saturation point that no one can exactly define what an “anti-hero” is and how it differs from just being a villain or a hero. [Read more…]
