Channel Surfing with C.T.

November 14, 2007 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

Having just sat through a double-dose of BROTHERS & SISTERS, I’m left wondering if anyone else thinks the show should is totally dancing around the obvious attraction between Justin and Rebecca. Yup, they share a dad, but they’re also the hottest couple this show has.But why do they have such a tough time writing for Balthazar Getty’s Tommy? Despite his wife being artificially inseminated by his brother, one of the resulting children dying, her packing up and leaving and his drifting into an affair with new-plot-device-in-town Lena, Tommy is still the most underdeveloped of the Walker clan. And I’d also like to see more done with Patricia Wettig’s Holly and her uneasy frienemy status with Nora. Speaking of whom, I’m sure that moment when Nora locked the door to prevent Justin from leaving was supposed to be powerful, but all I could think was how much better KNOTS LANDING, of all shows, did with a similar story. I’ll never, ever forget glamourpuss Abby Fairgate Cunningham Ewing demanded pothead daughter Olivia hand over her keys. “What are you going to do? Lock me our?” To which Abby replied, “No, I’m locking you in. With me.” And in that single moment, a character who’d often been wildly over the top was brought crashing down to earth with the rest of us mortals. Yeah, that was a detox I’ll never forget, as opposed to Justin’s instacure. Which I suppose points out one of my major problems with this show: It’s determination to rush every story to the point where things fly at us faster than we can possibly connect on an emotional level.

SAMANTHA WHO? continues to be a fav in my home. This week’s episode was probably the weakest of the season, and yet it was still better than any other sitcom on television. This year’s Emmy voters are going to have a tough task ahead of them. Why? Because surely even that group, notoriously blind to actual talent as they historically are (just ask fans of BUFFY, GILMORE, BATTLESTAR…) will have a tough time ignoring some of the great performances being offered up this season. Topping my list at the moment? Jean Smart.

Jenny’s This Week on TV

November 11, 2007 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

Welcome to a new week for This Week on TV! Running short on time this week (went to the library and checked out like 10 books then to the used bookstore and bought another 7. *laugh*) so will get right to it. 🙂

Sunday

Sunday is the season finale of Tell Me You Love Me on HBO at 9/8c. Following that is the season finale of Curb Your Enthusiasm on HBO at 10/9c. It’s a 40-minute finale, so don’t forget to set your recorders accordingly. 😉 An upcoming bat mitzvah provides Larry with an opportunity to clear up some nasty rumors.

TV-aholics Anonymous with Tim

November 7, 2007 By theTVaddict 7 Comments

Hi, my name is Tim and I have a problem. I’m a TV-aholic. This past week I had a problem of a different nature, though. I call it TV OD. I’ve come to the realization this week that I’m already burn-out on TV this (incredibly overcrowded) fall season and maybe this writer’s strike isn’t such a bad thing after all. Wait; just hear me out, ok?

I work 9 hours a day with a 45-60 minute commute each way, so usually by the time I get home all I want to do is just veg out. You know, have a little dinner and curl up on the couch for a couple hours before going to bed. Lately though, I’ve been finding it harder and harder to do this. It has nothing to do with me being tired or having other things to do, mainly it’s because I can’t just sit in front of the TV anymore. I know, I know. You’re thinking, “What kind of TV addict are you, huh?” In all fairness I still love TV; I just need to do other things in my life. It’s like I suddenly have a case of TV-ADD or something. My brain screams for intellectual stimulation that shows like Bionic Woman and Cane can’t provide.

Exclusive Interview: BONES Star T.J. Thyne

November 6, 2007 By theTVaddict 4 Comments

t.j. thyne, bones, jack hodgins interview

Back in September, this TV Addict nervously waited outside a room in Los Angeles’ Intercontinental Hotel for my first EVER press junket interview. BONES star T.J. Thyne was to be my first. And luckily, turned out to be one of the nicest people around.

The TV Addict: Just so you know, you’re my first face-to-face interview ever!

T.J. Thyne: I’m so honored to be your first!

You’ve been on so many of my favorite shows — THE OC, FRIENDS, 24, NIP/TUCK, JACK & BOBBY. Is it hard to play the same character all year long after so many years of different characters?

That’s an amazing first question to ask! It’s actually really trippy for me because to be completely honest, I’ve always resisted the whole ‘series regular’ thing. Over the years I’ve tested for so many shows and when I got to the studio test, I’d pull myself out thinking — I can’t spend 6 years on a show playing the same character, I can’t do it!

To me, the idea of playing different character in different genres was always what I wanted to do. But when BONES came along and the character of Jack Hodgins had so many different colours and opportunities, I took a risk for the first time. And I’m so glad I did. Jack’s got a lot of different layers, we’ve got an amazing cast, great writing and Hart Hanson is a genius in terms of being a showrunner.

That said, I do miss playing a lot of different characters, as well as film. I think cable guys have the best. Guys like Michael C. Hall get to play an amazing character [Dexter] and still have time to do film and everything like that. But if I had to be on a show on network television, I’m so thrilled that it’s this. I’m glad I never took anything before that would have prevented me from being on BONES.

My Take on TV: The Season So Far

November 6, 2007 By theTVaddict 12 Comments

Howdy folks. Is it just me or does it feel like forever since we did some bonding over our favorite shows and how they’re doing this season? Where do you stand on what we’ve seen so far? Here’s how it shakes out for me:

SUNDAYS
DEXTER is still the king of the Sunday night TV for me. Michael C. Hall is phenomenal. How he didn’t get the Emmy, I’ll never know. I’m on the edge of my seat over every episode, and I just love the Bay Harbor Butcher storyline, and Lundy, and even Deb. I can’t wait to see who finds out Dexter’s secret first!!

Who is loving BROTHERHOOD as much as me? It’s such a gritty drama – it’s incredibly underrated. I’m obsessed!

I’m still getting a kick out of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES this season. The Halloween episode didn’t fail to delight. I like when a show gets back on track. Marc Cherry realized they went a little haywire, and he got them back on the train.

BROTHERS & SISTERS is one of my favorite shows on TV. There is nothing this Walker family can’t handle, and I’m just excited that the show isn’t afraid to cover controversial topics and show how a real family might deal.

So glad THE AMAZING RACE is back! And I’m beyond thrilled that Ari and Staella were the first two gone. What horrible people they appeared to be!

I’m mad at CBS for not having more of a promotional push for their 100th episode of COLD CASE The show is far superior to a lot of stuff currently on the air, and it was a charming little episode about a murder from the 30s.

I’m also sure to catch SHARK whenever I can. It’s on the TiVo and it makes for good need-filler-while-I’m-waiting-for-other-shows-to-come-on viewing.

Introducing the TV Blog Coalition

tv blog coalition

Introducing the TV Blog Coalition. Think of it as a weekly Must Read TV from some of the web’s finest television blogs.

The TV Addict: Wondering how the writer’s strike is going to effect your favorite shows? Check out Our Writer’s Strike for Dummies. Need proof that writer’s are actually worth the money — see our favorite quotes of the week! Curious as to this TV Addict’s take on the strike, click here. Tired of all this strike talk already — take a trip down memory lane with our Scranton OFFICE Convention diary.

BuzzSugar: We reminisced about My So-Called Life and wondered how well everyone remembers it. We mulled over the current state of Heroes. We thought HBO’s In Treatment sounded more intense than a college course. And we actually liked Blake Lewis’ first single post-American Idol. Yeah, we know.

Daemon’s TV: Sandie finds weird couples on TV and shares her new TV addictions (Supernatural, Malcolm in the Middle, and Torchwood). In addition, she gets a first look at Rachel Bilson (Summer in The O.C.) in NBC’s Chuck.

Give Me My Remote: The TV Writer’s Strike is on everyone’s minds, but there’s still a lot of TV to talk about in TV land. GMMR is shocked to discover that she misses Karen Filipelli on The Office, but not shocked that she isn’t missing Cameron, House and Foreman on House. Should she be? And her readers are wondering if her love for all things Pushing Daisies is healthy or something they should be worried about. GMMR ended her week as she always does by catching up on all the latest TV news with a cocktail.

Glowy Box: Liz answered questions posed by the Googling masses about Desperate Housewives, The Bachelor, and Grey’s Anatomy. She also marveled at the extreme improvement in Desperate Housewives’ writing this season, and shook her head and sighed at Brad’s poor decision-making skills on The Bachelor.

Mikey Likes TV: Mikey listed the many ways in which he’s disappointed by Heroes: Generations, was surprised by how much he likes the new season of Nip/Tuck and forgot about it all after news of Joss Whedon’s blissful TV partnership with Eliza Dushku.

Ramblings of a TV Whore: We recalled about our favorite Halloween episodes from classic Roseanne to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Ugly Betty. Plus, Rae found out about Joss Whedon’s new show, Dollhouse, which proves she’d follow him anywhere… even to Fox.

TheTVaddict.com Week in Rewind

November 4, 2007 By theTVaddict 7 Comments

BEST EPISODE OF THE WEEK: SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
Who’d have thought the man responsible for bringing the funny back to SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE would be esteemed NBC News anchor Brian Williams. From his on-the-nose opening monologue to his surprisingly excellent impersonation of a New York firefighter — Williams was all class. And more importantly, ensured SNL’s final pre-strike installment was one to remember.

SPIN-OFF IDEA OF THE WEEK: GREY’S ANATOMY
Forget the rumored OFFICE spin-off and the continuously disappointing PRIVATE PRACTICE. Following Thursday’s episode of GREY’S ANATOMY, the spin-off this TV Addict is hankering for is called THE BOY’S CLUB. Starring the far more entertaining and slightly more mature generation of Seattle Grace Doctors.

Just imagine. McDreamy, McSteamy, Dr. Hahn and the Chief without the incessant whining of Meredith Grey and the nauseating Gizzie relationship. That’s 50 cc’s of awesome. [As I pretend to know exactly what a ‘cc’ is]

BONE-HEADED MOVE OF THE WEEK: ABC
First I missed the ending of SAMANTHA WHO because ABC decided to run it past 10PM. Next the ending of Thursday’s GREY’S ANATOMY. ABC take note. Making your shows run long isn’t going to fool me into watching the dreadfully disappointing BIG SHOTS or whatever follows SAMANTHA WHO. It’s simply going to make me mad. Do you really want an angry TV Addict?

AND THE EMMY GOES TO: Michael C. Hall
If you’re not watching Michael C. Hall take television’s most delicious character to new depths, you’re missing out on one of the best performances of the season. Don’t make the same mistake twice. Tune into a brand new episode of DEXTER tonight at 9PM on Showtime. Rumor has it that an angry DEXTER is almost as bad as an angry TV Addict!
