TV Addict Interview: UNHITCHED Star Craig Bierko

March 2, 2008 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

unhitched craig bierko interview

Remember SEINFELD? That little show where three guys and a girl sat around and mercilessly dissected every flaw in their significant other’s lives? Well apparently you’re not the only one.

Executive produced by the Farrelly Brothers and featuring an incredibly like-able cast including Craig Bierko [BOSTON LEGAL], Rashida Jones [THE OFFICE], Johnny Sneed and Shaun Majumder. Fox’s new comedy UNHITCHED is pretty much what one imagines you’d get when you combine the likes of SEINFELD with THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY.

Groundbreaking it’s not, but as long as you’re not expecting ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT levels of comedic brilliance and are prepared for some slightly off color humor [see: one very horny monkey] than UNHITCHED might be for you. At the very least, it’s far more entertaining than its former FAMILY GUY time slot companion AMERICAN DAD.

To talk about the show, this TV Addict had the fantastic opportunity to sit down with the incredibly tall series star Craig Bierko last month in Hollywood. Here’s what he had to say about UNHITCHED, everyone’s favorite Dunder Mifflin regional manager Rashida Jones and bathing John Malkovich.

The TV Addict: You look a lot bigger in person!
Craig Bierko:
I’m a big man. I’m a close up of myself.

So what can you tell us about the show?
It’s about three divorced guys who are getting back into the dating world. We’re all in our late 30’s to early 40’s and as pathetic as it sounds, we’re looking for love. Rashida Jones plays our divorce lawyer who lives next door.

On camera you and Rashida look pretty similar height wise. Yet having met her in person [at last Fall’s FOX Fall Launch] I know she’s quite petite.
She’s only about seven inches tall, the size of a Bic pen. She actually has a handle on her back and can fit in my pocket!

Television’s Top Romantic Moments

February 14, 2008 By theTVaddict 10 Comments

Taking a page from our partner in crime theREELaddict, theTVaddict.com has caved to the conspiracy perpetrated by the greeting card, flower and chocolate companies by proudly presenting [the obligatory] Valentine’s Day post highlighting [in no particular order] television’s most romantic moments.

Feel free to post your own favorite moments complete with YouTube links [honestly, what was life like before YouTube?] in the comments below.

FRIENDS

Like all good romances, it wasn’t easy. But after Paulo, Julie and that silly pro and con list, Rachel finally realized what the rest of us had known since the moment she ran into Central Perk sans wedding dress. Ross was her lobster. Who knew it would take eight more seasons of ‘breaks’ for them to live happily ever after?

ALIAS

Why steady-cams were invented. Sydney and Vaughn’s panoramic smooch capped off what was quite possibly ALIAS’ most exhilarating episode ever and most definitely the finest use of the Post-SuperBowl time-slot.

You Be the Critic: CASHMERE MAFIA and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES

January 7, 2008 By theTVaddict 12 Comments

I’m just going to say it. This TV Addict enjoyed CASHMERE MAFIA.

Admittedly, my judgement may be suffering from the likes of “Rerun-itis” or the lesser known “WGA Strike Syndrome,” but creator Darren Star’s not-so-subtle attempt to recapture that SEX IN THE CITY magic worked for me. The all-star cast was incredibly likable and the story-lines were interesting and well-paiced. In fact, this TV Addict’s only issue with the episode occurred during the show’s finale moments when frienemy Priscilla Gray confronted the girls and stated, “The Cashmere Mafia, that’s what they call you, you know.” Oh good, because up until that clarification, audiences didn’t make the connection between our 4 heroines and show’s title. Memo to ABC, we’re not stupid.

Further evidence the TV Addict’s judgement may be suffering: I enjoyed DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Susan for once wasn’t annoying (to Teri Hatcher’s credit, she’s far more likable sans the deadweight that’s become known as Mike Delfino). Bree was hilarious as she tried to pimp out Andrew for a new roof (Oh the things one will do for a a 60″ HD TV. Believe me, I’ve been there!) And Lynette and Gaby’s story-lines were genuinely touching (Anyone else think that Gaby is secretly hiding Carlos’ 10 million dollars?) My only complaint — would it have killed creator Marc Cherry to give us a tiny clue — a word even — as to what Adam and Dylan read that made their eyes almost pop out of their sockets? Who knows how long it will be until we get the next new episode of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES?

Agree/Disagree, You be the critic.

Jenny’s This Week on TV

December 1, 2007 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

Welcome to a new week for This Week on TV! Welcome also to the first week of December! Let’s see what’s on this week, ok? (Btw, thanks to tedder for the info on the new shows I’m putting in!)

Sunday

Sunday is a night of great specials and finales. First up is a great 2-hour tv movie called Pictures of Hollis Woods on CBS at 9/8c. It’s about a 12-year-old girl who lives her life in the foster care system until she meets a former art teacher who understands her and gives her unconditional love. It stars Alfre Woodard (Betty Applewhite on Desperate Housewives), James Tupper (Jack on Men in Trees!), Sissy Spacek, Jodelle Ferland (from the movie Silent Hill and guest star on quite a few shows, such as Stargate SG-1 as Adria at age 7) & Ridge Canipe (a young Dean on Supernatural).

Next is the 1-hour Comedy Central special, Comedy Central’s Last Laugh ’07 starring Lewis Black, at 10/9c. Comics reflect on the past year; hosted by Lewis Black.

The last special tonight is the first 2-hours of the 3-part mini-series on SciFi called Tin Man at 9/8c. From The Futon Critic: “A sometimes psychedelic, often twisted and always bizarre take on ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ SCI FI’s Tin Man is the epic tale of DG, a young woman plucked from her humdrum life and thrust into The Outer Zone (the O.Z.) – a fantastical realm rife with wonder, but oppressed by dark magic. In the adventure of a lifetime, DG discovers her true identity, battles evil winged-monkey-bats, and attempts to fulfill her destiny. Her perilous journey begins on the fabled Old Road that leads to a wizard known as the Mystic Man. Along the way, she is joined by a decidedly strange trio of companions – “Glitch,” an odd man missing half his brain; “Raw,” a quietly powerful wolverine-like creature longing for inner courage, and “Cain,” a heroic former policeman (who are known in the O.Z. as “Tin Men”) seeking vengeance for his scarred heart. Ultimately, DG’s destiny leads her to an emotional and terrifying showdown with the scintillatingly wicked sorceress Azkadellia, whose ties to DG are closer than anyone could have imagined. DG’s life, as well as the very future of the O.Z., hang in the balance.” This should be awesome. I’ve heard it described as a combination of Battlestar Galactica, Heroes and Pushing Daisies. haha Excellent!

Random Musings: PUSHING DAISIES, GOSSIP GIRL & PRIVATE PRACTICE

November 15, 2007 By theTVaddict 5 Comments

PUSHING DAISIES has gone to the dogs. But this slightly obsessed dog lover [meet MAC] and self-proclaimed TV Addict isn’t complaining. In fact, thanks to some time with TV’s cutest dog [Digby], a surprisingly surprising BIG LOVE inspired mystery and some brilliant one-liners courtesy of Emerson [well really, a WGA writer who’s unfortunately on strike] I’d go as far to say that last night’s helping of PUSHING DAISIES was my favorite serving since the pilot.

Another reason everything’s coming up DAISIES. The show’s final scene. In case you missed it — the awww-shucks scene took place in a fictional town that GILMORE GIRLS fans should be very familiar with. Which bring us to the obvious question. When [if] the WGA strike ever ends, would Lauren Graham not make the best PUSHING DAISIES guest star ever? Are 6 years of firing off lighting fast Amy Sherman-Palladino dialogue not the ideal training ground for The Pie Hole?

Question for GOSSIP GIRL’S Serena. Does being like, the hottest most popular girl in all of the Upper West Side mean you’ve never watched TV? I mean seriously. What are you doing letting Dan hang out with old ‘friend’ Vanessa? Have you not seen even a minute of THE OC? THE HILLS? 90210? Allowing Dan and Vanessa to remain friends will only lead to trouble. Don’t believe me? Just ask Ryan, Marissa and Oliver. Or Brenda, Kelly and Dylan.

I would have been far more invested in last night’s horrific PRIVATE PRACTICE supermarket hold-up if I hadn’t already seen it on every other show on television. ER, 24, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, CHICAGO HOPE. Memo to Shonda Rhimes — I’m this close to changing doctors.

Channel Surfing with C.T.

November 14, 2007 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

Having just sat through a double-dose of BROTHERS & SISTERS, I’m left wondering if anyone else thinks the show should is totally dancing around the obvious attraction between Justin and Rebecca. Yup, they share a dad, but they’re also the hottest couple this show has.But why do they have such a tough time writing for Balthazar Getty’s Tommy? Despite his wife being artificially inseminated by his brother, one of the resulting children dying, her packing up and leaving and his drifting into an affair with new-plot-device-in-town Lena, Tommy is still the most underdeveloped of the Walker clan. And I’d also like to see more done with Patricia Wettig’s Holly and her uneasy frienemy status with Nora. Speaking of whom, I’m sure that moment when Nora locked the door to prevent Justin from leaving was supposed to be powerful, but all I could think was how much better KNOTS LANDING, of all shows, did with a similar story. I’ll never, ever forget glamourpuss Abby Fairgate Cunningham Ewing demanded pothead daughter Olivia hand over her keys. “What are you going to do? Lock me our?” To which Abby replied, “No, I’m locking you in. With me.” And in that single moment, a character who’d often been wildly over the top was brought crashing down to earth with the rest of us mortals. Yeah, that was a detox I’ll never forget, as opposed to Justin’s instacure. Which I suppose points out one of my major problems with this show: It’s determination to rush every story to the point where things fly at us faster than we can possibly connect on an emotional level.

SAMANTHA WHO? continues to be a fav in my home. This week’s episode was probably the weakest of the season, and yet it was still better than any other sitcom on television. This year’s Emmy voters are going to have a tough task ahead of them. Why? Because surely even that group, notoriously blind to actual talent as they historically are (just ask fans of BUFFY, GILMORE, BATTLESTAR…) will have a tough time ignoring some of the great performances being offered up this season. Topping my list at the moment? Jean Smart.

Amrie’s Take on TV: The Good, The Bad ant the Incredibly Unfortunate

October 9, 2007 By theTVaddict 8 Comments

Hello everyone, how has the first two weeks of your TV season been? Series premieres of new shows, season premieres of old shows, and my inability to stay up late enough to watch everything – looks like it’s going to be a good season!

I thought it was a good time to break down the good, the bad, and the incredibly unfortunate of the new season, so far!

The Good
Pushing Daisies, Pushing Daisies, Pushing Daisies….I’ve seen the Pie-lette 12 times since the first time I watched it, and every single time, I’m completely drawn in, sitting with goofy grin on my face, from start to finish. Ned the Piemaker is freshly appointed to the top spot on my TV boyfriends list (it’s important to note that Lee Pace has been on the list since the days of Wonderfalls, but he skyrocketed to the top the minute I saw this show). He’s adorable, isn’t he? Yes, I know there’s a group of people how there that didn’t “get it” or didn’t see what all of the hubbub was about with this show, but it’s one I plan never to miss, and I just can’t wait to see where the season brings us.

Friday Night Lights is finally back, and it’s actually matching its competition so far in key demos. Looks like all of the fan campaigns have gotten at least a few more people watching. There is no complimentary word too strong to express my love for this cast. Amazing, heartbreaking, lovable, charming, endearing, moving, beautiful, you name it, and it’s on my list. Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton. Wow. I just can’t say much more than wow. They move me to tears with the slightest movement or silent scene. Blow me away. And say what you will about the storyline currently affecting Landry and Tyra – I’m a huge fan of Jesse Plemmons and Adrianne Palicki, and if anyone can handle it, and not oversell what could be a huge gamble, it’s these two. Keep the faith in the writers, gang. I think they’ll make it all okay. Plus? Freaking Aaron from 24 is playing Landry’s father, so AWESOME!

Bones and House on Tuesdays on FOX. I love this pairing. It’s a straight 2 hour block of wit, sarcasm, chemistry, science, and awesomeness! The shows go so perfectly together, and the hours go by so quickly, it’s a wonder FOX didn’t try this before. I find myself actually thanking FOX for something, and that’s a Tuesday night of TV that has me (almost) forgetting the dream pairing of Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars from last year. If FOX loved me, they would keep these two shows together and move American Idol. A girl can dream, right?

Filed Under: My Take on TV

Channel Surfing with C.T.

October 1, 2007 By theTVaddict 5 Comments

It’s official. I’ve already gotten to the point in the fall season where when tuning into a new show, I actually hope it’ll suck because I can’t figure out how I’ll squeeze another one into my packed viewing schedule. And can I say right now that I’m incredibly grateful that several of the nets are using dead spots in their sked to rerun things? I can catch up with GOSSIP GIRL Sunday evening, and although I missed the premiere of CHUCK earlier this week, I was able to catch the Saturday night rerun. Let’s hear it for repurposing!

Kudos to all of you who caught my mistake the other day when referencing what tune Addison was shaking her groove thing to on PRIVATE PRACTICE. It was indeed Don’t Feel Like Dancin’, one of my favorite tunes, which makes the error all the more egregious.

Is it just me, or did ABC’s marketing department do a terrible job selling their new offerings? Earlier this week, I told you how much I enjoyed DIRTY SEXY MONEY despite an ad campaign that made me think it would be flatter than a prepubescent teen, and tonight I found the same to be true of BIG SHOTS. Truth be told, I’d forgotten that I’d even set the DVR for it, and upon discovering that I had, pushed “play” with reluctance. And damned if it didn’t turn out to be a thousand times better than I’d expected! Although sold in some reviews as a male version of SEX & THE CITY, this struck me more as a manly take on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Yes, there were some hokey moments and stilted dialogue, but the show had more heart than I could have imagined. Michael Vartan steals the show right out from under top-billed Dylan McDermott (who may single-handedly, or should I say double-cheekedly, bring back the five o’clock shadow), and Jessica Collins — as a mistress who befriends her lover’s wife — somehow combines a modern sensibility with a comedic timing that would have been right at home in classic screwball comedies.

The TV Addict is Off to Los Angeles

September 22, 2007 By theTVaddict 6 Comments

TV Addict local time: 3AM. No doubt you’re wondering why I’m not sleeping.

Well, since you asked. Tomorrow, or more accurately a few hours from now, this TV Addict is off to Los Angeles — or as I like to call it, the ‘mother ship’ — in order to obtain some first hand television news, interviews and scoop. But more on that later.

For some inexplicable reason, the night prior to any trip, I simply can’t sleep. Scared of flying? Absolutely not. Okay, so I’ve probably watched a little too much LOST and let’s face it — I still have no idea as to how a metal canister can hurdle through the sky — but the reality is I’m far too excited to sleep. That, or I simply can’t stop watching the fifth season of BEVERLY HILLS 90210 that I PVR’d all week long courtesy of TVTropolis [Valerie Malone is such a Bad Girl!].

This weekend I’ll be interviewing numerous stars from your favorite shows, attending what’s shaping up to be one helluva Fall TV Launch Party and touring the set of one of the new season’s most highly anticipated shows. To find out which stars, what party and what set, just check back later this weekend. [Holy Frak! A coked up Dylan McKay just drove off a cliff!]

Speaking of next week, theTVaddict.com will be celebrating the new TV season in style. And by ‘style’ we mean the unveiling of the TV Addict’s ‘Must Watch’ Fall TV Schedule, fantastic video featuring some of your favorite stars and one interview a certain ‘army’ has been patiently waiting for. So don’t miss it, it’s going to be a great week, or as Barney Stintson might say… LEGEN….wait for it….DARY! [Does this joke ever get old?]

Monday’s TV News Round Up

August 6, 2007 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

Proving yet again that SMALLVILLE’S officially run out of ideas. SCI FI Wire is reporting that former SuperGirl Helen Slater has signed on to appear in the sixth episode of SMALLVILLE’S upcoming season. We think it goes without saying that if Krypto (the SuperDog) gets anywhere near the Kent farm, this TV Addict’s officially done with the show.

Who knew there were so many ordinary people with extraordinary power secretly roaming the planet. TVGuide is reporting that David Anders (Sark from ALIAS) has officially been bumped to series regular status after the powers that be were pleased with his initial guest star stint. Anders addition to HEROES brings the ever-expanding cast to at least fifteen. Which can mean only one thing. We wouldn’t get too attached to any of the new second season heroes anytime soon. No doubt Sylar’s going to be sent on an opening season rampage (at the request of NBC’s budget department).

Turns out ABC is just realizing that it takes more than an incredibly good looking cast to make a hit show. TV Guide is reporting that VERONICA MARS mastermind Rob Thomas has been brought on board to BIG SHOTS as a consulting producer. Needless to say, if Rob Thomas can make Michael Vartan, Dylan McDermott, Christopher Titus and Joshua Malina sound as smart as Kirsten Bell — give this man an Emmy.
