Adrianna Drama! Teddy’s Outing! Jennie Garth’s Doppelganger! Michael Steger Talks 90210

January 31, 2011 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

If you thought the first half of Navid Shirazi’s senior year was eventful — you know, the one that saw him turn his father into the authorities while juggling his feeling for both Adriana and Silver — you ain’t seen nothing yet. Or at least that was the distinct impression we were left with following a one-on-one with his portrayer Michael Steger in which he teased what’s in store for his character as we head into the second half of 90210’s third season.

Before we get into all the upcoming drama with Navid, we wanted to first get your reaction to last week’s fairly surprising news that has your co-stars Lori Loughlin (Debbie Wilson) and Ryan Eggold (Ryan Matthews) exiting the series at the end of this season.
Michael Steger: You know I’m not really sure what went on, I don’t know if it was mutual or what the deal was so I’m kind of left in the dark. But I feel like they’re still on the show and I know they’re both very talented and very awesome to work with but I’m kind of just as curious as you are as to the details.

Moving on to your character, this season saw a pretty big falling out between Navid and his father when your character turned him into the authorities for knowingly employing underage girls in his adult videos. Is that storyline something the show is planning to revisit later this season?
Yeah they are going to readdress it. I think the whole thing with Navid is that because he’s trying to finish senior year, graduate with honors, and get to college, he’s just very very stressed. He’s going to deal with what went down between himself and his father, but the first thing on his plate is taking care of his mom, sisters and revamping the business. He turned his Dad’s porn business into Shirazi 2.0 and he’s producing music videos having turned it into a production company.

Our Brush with Fame on the Set of FRINGE

October 14, 2010 By theTVaddict 1 Comment

As if being given the opportunity to interview John Noble, Blair Brown, Jasika Nicole and Lance Reddick wasn’t cool enough, on our recent August set visit to the set of FRINGE we were given the once-in-a-lifetime chance to play an extra in a scene. The following is our harrowing brush with Hollywood fame*

2:30PM: A shuttle bus arrives at our hotel to take us to set. Yes, you are reading that correctly: A shuttle bus. Evidently, our acclaimed appearance as “Audience Member #24” in the first season of GLEE didn’t warrant an upgrade to SUV or Limo. Rest assured, our Agent will be getting a call later in the day.

3:00PM: We arrive and are immediately asked by publicist extraordinaire Josh Governale not to tweet any particulars about the scene we’re about to shoot. Needless to say, asking a group of TV journalists and bloggers not to tweet about every minuet detail of their life is far easier said than done. Also easier said than done, controlling ourselves around the ridiculously delectable breakfast buffet that has been set up mere feet away. Seriously. How Anna Torv does it we’ll never know.

5 Reasons Why You’re Not Going to Want to Miss the Second Season Premiere of LIFE UNEXPECTED

September 2, 2010 By theTVaddict 8 Comments

life unexpected cast

In a letter accompanying the DVD screener of LIFE UNEXPECTED’s second season premiere, executive producer and creator Liz Tigelaar had this to say with regards to the new season.

“We are thrilled to be able to continue telling the stories of these characters and this unlikely family and have worked hard to broaden out and expand the scope of the show, giving our familiar characters new conflicts challenges and victories. Hopefully you’ll like what what you see.”

Suffice to say, we didn’t just like what we sawy… we love it! Which is we’re dedicating Today’s TV Addict Top 5 to the reasons why you’re not going to want to miss the second season premiere of LIFE UNEXPECTED.

Unexpected surprises!
Move over Shonda Rhimes, there’s a far more unexpected turn of events in store for fans of LIFE UNEXPECTED when the show returns for its much-anticipated second season on September 14th. What’s more, said surprise will happen just prior to those now familiar guitar strings being plucked by theme songstress Rain Perry. And, we should mention, totally worth tuning in for.

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: New Fall Shows We’re Really Really Excited For*

August 25, 2010 By theTVaddict 10 Comments

With the Fall TV Season just around the corner, this TV Addict can’t help but notice a distressing lack of excitement surrounding the new season. And while we’re the first to admit that September 2010 may be lacking an obvious breakout hit like say a GLEE or MODERN FAMILY, there are certainly more than a few reasons to be excited. With LONE STAR’s James Wolk, Adriana Pallicki, and Eloise Mumford just the tip of iceberg.

lone star fox cast

LONE STAR
Move over GOSSIP GIRL, there’s a new man in town. That man: Fall TV’s next big thing and Kyle Chandler look-a-like James Wolk, who fans will soon be swooning over as Bob Allen — a con artist torn between two lives and two woman in separate parts of Texas. Executive producers Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman (PARTY OF FIVE) call it “DALLAS without the Cheese.” We call it a guilty pleasure we don’t have to feel guilty about obsessing over. Premieres September 20 on FOX (GlobalTV in Canada) [See Trailer]

18 Going on 80: A look at HOT IN CLEVELAND and PRETTY LITTLE LIARS

July 7, 2010 By Aleks Chan 3 Comments

How much can TV Land’s HOT IN CLEVELAND attribute its success to the Cult of Betty White? The same following catapulted the 88-year-old actress from perpetual guest star to the subject of a (successful) Facebook campaign that had her host the highest rated episode of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE since 2008, so it’s not unlikely that some of the five million people who tuned into the pilot were following suit. Part of it might also be the nostalgia trip experienced watching the show: stocked with recognizable faces and familiar set pieces, it hits upon every conceivable element of what makes the very reruns TV Land airs so cozy.

The show is an interesting creature, seemingly manufactured to reconfigure the traditional sitcom for 2010: it’s filmed in front of a live studio audience, casted with sitcom favorites of yesteryear (Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, and Wendie Malick), and is rife with set ‘em up, knock ‘em down jokes, but also (awkwardly) incorporates newfangled concepts like the internet and “manscaping.” It’s the equivalent of “New Look, Same Great Taste.” This would be perfectly fine if the fondness for ‘80s sitcom tropes were easily transferable, but here it just comes across as a comedy bogged down by…‘80s sitcom tropes. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with this (if you like your yuks foreseeable from the opening credits, you’ll love it), but it feels like too much of an easy way out — that masquerading as a kitschy throwback should be enough.

The trio arrives in the titular Ohio city after their plane from Los Angeles to Paris is forced to make an emergency stop. And seemingly right out of the sitcom handbook, they each find one reason or another to stay, the three of them living together in a house leased by Melanie (Bertinelli), a self-help book author who recently separated from her husband. White’s enduring charm is tested here: much like how the show plays on our memories of past comedies to get us to laugh, White commands much of her laughs from her age: as house caretaker Elka, she gets plenty of old-lady-being-raunchy material, which by the third episode I screened grew tiresome. An actress as adept as White could easily handle meatier lines, not that her equally capable co-stars are stealing any good dialogue. Malick, who plays washed-up soap opera star Victoria, does manage to gussy up some of her lines with her snappy delivery.

Much is made of the stars’ age, mainly that they are all Women Of A Certain Age. Upon arriving in Cleveland, they hit a bar packed with everything that they thought existed only in fables: women who eat, men who don’t look past them for their age, and who greet them with old fashioned Midwestern kindness. But this isn’t GOLDEN GIRLS, a show that was much more attuned to how to examine the relationship between age, sex, and identity from a comedic vantage point. It’s disappointing, because with a cast as seasoned as this, there was (or is, if you’re at all confident that things could turn around) ample opportunity to offer a fresh take on the elder modern woman.

On the flip side, it was hardly a surprise to hear that PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, ABC Family’s latest melodramatic teen soap, quickly shot to the top of the ratings chart. The network formally owned by televangelist Pat Robertson has heavily refocused its image in the past few years, going from FULL HOUSE reruns to teen dramedies packed with hyper-emotive (though impressively stoic) young actors with shampoo commercial hair. Yes, any of the principal actors in LIARS (based on the young adult novels by Sara Shepard) could easily reminds us that they’re worth it.

Haircare aside, this is right on brand, complete with drama-inducing setup: four best friends living in the posh Pennsylvania suburb of Rosewood suffer a falling out after their friend Alison (Sasha Pieterse) goes missing. A year later, each begin receiving messages threatening to expose their secrets from someone who signs as “A,” to which the girls presume to be Alison. These are Big Dark Secrets like lipstick lesbianism, boyfriend stealing, kleptomania, and your run-of-the-mill adultery. But this will all seem rather meek if you’ve spent even half a second watching GOSSIP GIRL (or whatever prime time soap you explain to watch for its “creative storytelling”).

The allure of shows like this is how easily you can relish in the soft-focused, retouched soapy goodness of both the story and the acting, but LIARS seems to be an indicator of a potential saturation point for ABC Family, whose insistence on creating “a new kind of family” may have gone to their heads. The show has seemingly chewed through an entire season’s worth of story lines in three episodes, moving so hastily that basic character development feels rushed, leapfrogging the important moments in between.  A good soap is a long, slow burn and is not the place to be cutting corners.

Ironically, before becoming a bestselling book series, the project was presented as a television series by the same production company that helms GG and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES — a “DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES for teens.” It’s unclear whether this is still the intent of PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, which has assembled a stable of decent actors (including the always exceptional Laura Leighton as the mother of a teen shoplifter) and a promising premise (better shows have been made from slimmer setups), but has mishandled them. My suggestion: catch some reruns.

Exclusive: Stephen Moyer Talks TRUE BLOOD Season 3, Emmy Chances & More!

June 8, 2010 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

By: Melissa Girimonte

Waiting sucks. Particularly the long and arduous one following TRUE BLOOD’s second season finale which saw audience’s would-be-happily-ever-after cut surprisingly short following Bill Compton’s untimely abduction mere moments after proposing to Sookie Stackhouse!

And while many have admirably attempted to plug the gaping hole left by TRUE BLOOD’s nine month hiatus — including THE VAMPIRE DIARIES star Ian Somerhalder (close, but no cigar!) and HBO, which deserves some serious credit for taking on the gargantuan task that is quenching audience’s seemingly insatiable appetite for all things “Vampire” courtesy of a very clever “Waiting Sucks” poster campaign, minisodes, and last week’s “Ultimate Trubie” event — the fact of the matter is that Sunday June 13th can’t come soon enough.

Which is why we at theTVaddict.com decided to step up to the plate and do our part in the form of this exclusive one-on-one interview with Stephen Moyer. The talented and charming actor who was kind enough to take some time from shooting to discuss his small screen alter ego Bill Compton, the upcoming Emmy nominations, and what it’s like being part of the phenomenon that is TRUE BLOOD.

Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Questions with LOST Star Daniel Dae Kim

May 4, 2010 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Last week, LOST co-executive producer Damon Lindelof hinted in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter that fans will more than likely be asking, “What did they mean by this?” after the show ends. Having just recently finishing shooting the finale, do you think fans will be satisfied?
Daniel Dae Kim: Given the nature of television it’s hard to please all the people all the time. But I will say I think the finale is true to Damon’s [Lindelof] vision of the show as he originally described it to me.

LOST still has a lot of questions to answer, should fans be prepared for a lot of them to be left up in the air?
I don’t think there will be a lot of questions left up in the air because I think quite frankly a lot of questions have been answered already. I think the writers have done a really good job of doling out answers with every episode. We know what the numbers mean, we know what the black smoke is, and there are significant answers to significant questions in the coming episodes as well.
