SUITS Recap: Limits On Chasing Safety And Success

July 28, 2016 By Shana Lieberman 1 Comment

suits_s6ep3_harveynegotiating

In the latest episode of SUITS season 6, Mike Ross started to learn had to protect himself from Frank Gallo, all while looking out for his newly-made friend, Kevin Miller. He had to find a way to do the right thing, while balancing that with making the safest choices. Elsewhere, Pearson Specter Litt needed to rebuild, but Louis Litt and Harvey Specter both had their limits in terms of what they’d do to accomplish that. Where did Mike draw the line when it came to saving his own skin? And what did Harvey outright refuse to do for the firm? Check out our SUITS recap to find out.

Mike Ross and Kevin Miller versus the world. After barely surviving an attempt on his life in SUITS 6×02, thanks in no small part to his cellmate’s interference, Mike Ross found himself in a less-than-desirable position: He wouldn’t just need to watch his own back anymore but would, instead, have to make decisions that would keep Kevin safe, too. When the prison counselor, Julius Rowe, advised him to make a formal complaint against Gallo, Mike refused. Not only did he not want everyone to know that he’d snitched on a fellow inmate, but he knew that making any moves against his enemy would continue to put his new friend in danger.

Because scum like Gallo can’t go after his enemies directly. He has to get to them through other people (Harvey through Mike, Mike through Kevin and/or threats against Rachel) and by using his buddies’ brawn instead.

Despite having formed an alliance of sorts, complete with vows to watch each other’s backs, Mike initially wanted to keep his conversation with Julius a secret from Kevin. There was still that underlying wariness involved, which was undoubtedly caused by the epically horrible way in which putting his trust in Gallo had backfired. Having been through all of this before, Kevin figured out what Julius wanted quickly enough and told Mike the harrowing story of what had happened to his last roommate, Mark Higgins. Following a formal complaint against a different lowlife, Mark was beaten so badly that he wound up in a coma.

And it left Kevin completely alone.

The last thing Mike wanted to do was abandon his one and only friend, so he repeatedly refused to make that formal complaint — even though the outcome could have meant ensuring his own safety. Unfortunately, there were still two hours in the day when Kevin would have to fend for himself: Mike’s working hours. Not only was Gallo able to waltz into the kitchen and trash talk Mike with some nonsense about the transitive property — improperly applied, no less —  while Mike was trying to work, but he also managed to take advantage of the first time Kevin was alone since preventing the stabbing.

Gallo had several guys attack Kevin; but again, he and Mike vowed not to cause extra trouble by filing any kind of complaint. That meant that, even with the possibility of losing consciousness due to his beating, Kevin couldn’t go to the infirmary.

Upset over how easy it was for Gallo to get to Kevin, Mike demanded that Julius have their tormentor transferred to another block. But, as usual, Julius didn’t have the authority. Really, the more Julius said he could help Mike, the more it seemed he was completely incapable of doing anything useful whatsoever. And Mike called him on it before at least asking to give up his job because he couldn’t, in good conscience, leave Kevin alone for those two hours a day.

Nope, sorry, Mike. Can’t help you there, either. Seriously, Julius, what can you do?

Well, as we learned in last week’s episode of SUITS, the prison counselor has a tiny bit of authority over things like inmates’ jobs. So, Julius used what little bit of power he seemed to have by making sure Kevin Miller would be working in the kitchen at the same time as Mike. At least they wouldn’t be separated, but considering Gallo had the power to get three guys to go after Kevin in the bathroom, attacks at work seem just as likely as anything else. Two guys agains three…still bad odds for the good guys.

As the episode ended, Harvey found out that Mike could get an immediate release — and away from Frank Gallo for good — if he informed on Kevin. I think we’ve been here before, folks. Mike Ross doesn’t inform on friends. If he did, it would be Harvey Specter wearing prison blue and not Mike Ross. While Gallo informed on someone to get himself into a facility with less security — and, apparently, to get all sorts of people within the system under his thumb — I don’t see Mike walking in his footsteps.

After all, if he did, he’d be just as bad. Wouldn’t he?

Getting the firm back in business. Back at Pearson Specter Litt, it was time to start making money again. Louis Litt was tasked with setting up the leases for the firm’s unused offices, which caused the type of hilarity viewers have come to expect from pretty much anything on SUITS that involves Louis. After he’d harassed several potential candidates about everything from LGBT rights to carbon footprints, thus making them run the other way, Louis revealed to Donna — who already had him figured out because she’s Donna — that he didn’t want just anybody in the bullpen because it was the heart of the firm.

Also known as: It was Louis’ heart.

Donna vowed to help Louis figure out a way to sublet without endangering his beloved bullpen, but he decided to have a “brilliant idea” regarding renting to some trading firm full of old geezers. As often happens when either 1) Louis Litt has a plan or 2) someone goes against Donna Paulsen’s advice, it backfired spectacularly. The actual tenants had an enormously obnoxious dudebro as their leader, and he made life miserable for Louis from minute one. There was also a loss of prune juice and bran bars involved, which makes me worry about whether or not Louis’ “4:15 constitutional” will continue to be a regular appointment.

Despite several moments in which Dudebro Tenant found himself on the receiving end of getting Litt Up, Louis’ poor decision-making ultimately ended badly for him. Louis was nearly able to evict Dudebro, but he wound up forming an alliance with Harvey after a huge favor. With Harvey’s help, the traders won’t be going anywhere, and they’ll get to enjoy making Louis’ life miserable.

…which brings me to Harvey himself. Despite being in desperate need of clients, he refused to do business with William Sutter. Instead, he decided he’d work with Nathan Burns. Harvey had previously turned down Burns’ offer of business because he was, in Harvey’s own words, “an asshole.” But with no other options and only 48 hours to find a client before Jessica made him sign with a criminal even worse than Charles Forstman, Harvey did what he had to do.

Acquiring Burns as a client involved booking dinner at Per Se — making the reservations by himself, not with Donna’s help — and serving a number of orders against Burns’ enemies. Harvey being Harvey, he managed just fine…But then he had to delay dinner in order to look out for Mike.

Although Burns was fine with meeting an hour later, Harvey arrived at the restaurant, only to be told to take his offer and shove it. After taking his frustrations out on Donna (and Donna not standing for it), Harvey realized that maybe Burns had other reasons for suddenly changing his tune. Sutter had bought 5% of Burns’ company, which Harvey verified with Dudebro Tenant’s help.

(Ahh, full circle).

After purchasing his own shares, Harvey Specter formed an alliance with Nathan Burns, freeing himself from stooping low enough to work Sutter. Burns may have been a bully, but he was easily the lesser of two evils.

Additional thoughts:

  • I’m not sure how a grown man’s acquisition of a high school diploma while in jail qualifies him as “a real poindexter” like Mike. Also, what kind of monster actually uses the word “poindexter” these days?
  • Danbury needs a Donna Paulsen. She has the authority to save the world, unlike Julius Rowe and the countless stupid guards. Of course, there’s only one Donna Paulsen; but seeing as how she fixes everyone else’s problems without breaking a sweat, I imagine she can singlehandedly run a prison, too.
  • Donna Paulsen has finally said that she’s as much a part of this firm as anyone else. I don’t even know where to begin stressing the importance of this.
  • Harvey needs to chill on taking his obvious stress out on Donna. That’s no way to treat the woman who’s constantly saving your miserable skin, especially when you’ve previously told her that you love her. Man up, buddy. There are much better ways to relieve stress, and they can even involve Donna if you want them to.
  • “I’m not leaving Mike alone in there another minute without him knowing what’s coming.” Harvey Specter, putting everything on the line for the people he cares about.
  • “When you lie down with dogs, you come up with fleas.” Harvey Specter, learning and growing. He’s not making the same mistake he made years ago when he got into business with Charles Forstman. It haunted him for way too long and nearly cost him everything. (Meanwhile, if Burns is a bully, is he just a dog with a flea collar? Or…???)
  • Rachel Zane, receiving advice from Jessica Pearson on how to be a strong woman. And actually taking it. I am so, so here for this.  She’s her catty classmate’s “intellectual and ethical superior.” How utterly and completely perfect. If SUITS season 6 continues to be the season of a return to the smart, tough Rachel? I’m fine with leaving Mike Ross in prison forever. More strong ladies, please and thank you.
  • My real question in this whole Mike vs. Frank thing is whether Mike was telling the truth when he told Gallo that Harvey’s plan was to let everyone know he was a snitch…or if that was all part of a ruse. Also, do we really want to let this guy know that he can be back on the streets within just over two years? That just doesn’t seem smart. Lock him up and throw away the key, folks.

Make sure to tune in to the next episode of SUITS on Wednesday, August 3 at 9/8c on USA Network.

TOP GEAR Through the Rear View Mirror

June 6, 2016 By Alan Eggleston Leave a Comment

top tear

It’s been a long wait since Jeremy Clarkson was let go from the BBC, cutting short season 22 of TOP GEAR, and James May and Richard Hammond decided to leave rather than appear on TOP GEAR without him. Last week, the world finally got its first look at the new TOP GEAR team with the premiere episode of season 23. The program aired Monday (May 30) on BBC America and Saturday (June 4) on BBC Canada.

Many fans have already made up their minds not to watch the revamped series. They prefer the boorish old man with bad manners who had no one to blame but himself for getting sacked. So the BBC have already started the revised series with a challenge attracting an audience. But if these people had watched the BBC make an honest attempt to breathe new life into what was once the world’s best program about the automobile, they might have changed their minds. To do it, the BBC brought in a seasoned radio show host with a penchant for fast cars and a renowned American TV star who admits to being a “petrol head” himself, and did themselves proud proving their metal in episode one.

Now, it wasn’t a perfect first run. Chris Evans, the radio show host, seemed to constantly yell when before the studio audience in the new, echo-prone studio. Was he afraid he couldn’t be heard so far away from the microphone he’s used to having right in front of him? Or was he just excited to be there? And there seemed to be something or someone missing when it was just he and Matt LeBlanc, the TV actor, together in the studio or out on a test run or adventure. Then there was the awkward interview during the segment that was once the “celebrity driving the reasonably priced automobile” segment. It’s now been turned into a rally car competition over a revamped slalom course outside the studio. Details are sketchy whether it will always feature two celebrities at the same time, but in this case, it was British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and American actor Jesse Eisenberg. The interview took too long and the introductions were awkwardly scripted on teleprompter.

But as a long-time fan, I have to say, TOP GEAR still had its automobile mojo in high gear. What wasn’t missing and what went well was the focus on cars.

The driving team took on the American-made Dodge Viper and Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and the British-made Ariel Nomad. Chris Evans and German auto racer matched the Viper against the ‘Vette in one-on-one combat at an American airfield, the Viper winning. And Matt LaBlanc tested the Nomad off-roader in the Moroccan desert, clearly having the ride of a lifetime. The Stig put the Viper and the Nomad to the test on the TOP GEAR test track, the Viper rating among the top against fast cars from past seasons.

TOP GEAR also continued its adventures-on-the-road series, Chris and Matt taking old three-wheeled Reliants on a 250 mile trek to Blackpool, England, where Matt’s Stars and Stripes-painted convertible barely survived the trek across the finish line in the rain. Then it was time for a series of competitions, pitting an august Range Rover against a vintage Willys Jeep: Brit ingenuity versus Yank dependability. And they played it all off with plenty of the cheeky TOP GEAR fun and games, silliness, and smarminess. That part of TOP GEAR hadn’t changed, although it didn’t match the give and take of Clarkson, May, and Hammond.

At the end of the show, Matt LeBlanc started to say, “And with that bombshell,” Clarkson’s usual way to end the show, but Evans stopped him short. You see, as much of the old TOP GEAR format as the new version had tried to retain, this clearly wasn’t going to be the same old show.

TOP GEAR is now an hour and a half, and in some places they’ve added a half hour “under the hood” program, called EXTRA GEAR, where they’ve separated out the “news” and amplified parts of the regular TOP GEAR program. It is hosted by two new presenters, Rory Reid and Chris Harris. The studio audience for this show is smaller, and the videography quality doesn’t look as good. And I noticed a sense of tension between the two hosts. Honestly, I didn’t see the purpose of this separate show except that as the TOP GEAR producers started organizing a new show they began bringing on new presenters, and maybe it hadn’t all gelled by the time they needed to air the first episodes.

Audience reaction is understandably lukewarm. From the beginning of the separation from Clarkson, May, and Hammond, they have wanted their trio or nothing. And clearly the new team needs some work. But the quality workmanship is there. It will take some time to work out the quirks. A BBC series like this is typically 6 episodes — will that be enough time to establish the presenters with viewers to rebuild the series’ audience? Will the changes and upgrades be enough to impress those who stuck around and bring back any of the skeptics? Matt LaBlanc seems like a natural in the show; Chris Evans seems a bit edgy, nervous, pushy. Will the team survive? The original series’ trio start up their own new automobile program on Amazon Prime this fall. The BBC doesn’t have much time to win over this audience.

You can watch TOP GEAR and EXTRA GEAR at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT Mondays on BBC America.

OUTLANDER: Caitriona Balfe Teases Claire and Jamie’s Relationship in Season 2

April 9, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

outlander

Claire Randall Fraser knows the future and she’s trying to change it. When OUTLANDER returns for its second season this weekend, Claire and her husband Jamie have traveled to France to stop the Battle of Culloden before it ever begins and to ensure the future of the Scottish Highlanders. Claire seems to believe that the solution to their problem lies in Paris with the exiled Prince Charles Stuart (the leader of the Jacobites) and so she and Jamie will integrate themselves into French society to try and change the fate of Scotland. But any good time travel story or film will tell you that fate will always find a way to come to pass.

We recently spoke to OUTLANDER star Caitriona Balfe about Claire and Jamie’s new life in France in season 2 and why their plans have such a devastating impact on the couple.

The Distance Between Them. Jamie is still going “through the trauma at the end of season 1 [and] here [Claire and Jamie] are and it’s a very, very fragile recovery that they seem to have made. There seems to be this hope at a new beginning and there’s a new plan in place and it seems like they’re going to get somewhere with all of this. But, we realize that Jamie is still experiencing PTSD. They’re not communicating. There’s a massive distance between them. And what should be the most joyous time in Claire’s life [because she’s pregnant] is a very lonely and almost isolated time. In trying to help Jamie and in trying to give him this mission to hold on to, she’s self-sacrificing in a lot of ways. Because he’s never home and, when he is home, he’s busy thinking about this other thing. And it’s very rare glimpses that we get that the pregnancy is the one thing that actually bonds them every so often.”

New Faces. While the couple spend a great deal of time separated, Claire eventually makes herself some new friends. “One is Louise De Rohan and that’s played wonderfully by Claire Sermonne, who is hilarious and absolutely fantastic in this role. But probably her most important friend that she makes, I would say, is Master Raymond. I always sort of view him as a counterpart to Geillis Duncan, [because] there’s something about this man. He’s quite unusual and when Claire and he meet, it’s almost like there’s a recognition of a like-minded soul, or something like that between them. He’s a mysterious man, we don’t quite know what his whole story is. But he’s the one that gives her this gift of L’Hôpital Des Anges and a place for her to go and feel purposeful again. And there she meets another new friend, Mother Hildegarde. So after a while she does start to make some friends and to find her place. But I think in the beginning there is a lot of uncertainty and loneliness there.”

French Society. Are Claire and Jamie spending a great deal apart because that’s the best way to accomplish their goal or because French society separates men and women? Caitriona said that “even though they’ve moved into the upper echelons of Parisian society, and on the surface it seems that women have as much autonomy as men in a way, all of the politicking, all of the business deals and all of those things are very much done by men. And women are expected to be theses objects, [to] sit prettily and drink tea and gossip in drawing rooms. This is the difficulty with which Claire finds herself, because she’s frustrated. She doesn’t have an outlet and together they make these plans but it’s Jamie that has the power to go out and implement them. And so in the beginning Claire’s at a loose end. She’s sort of managing this big house and she’s bored. And she’s frustrated and it isn’t until Master Raymond tells her about L’Hôpital Des Anges and she goes there that she gets to feel useful and vital and have a purpose again.”

The Impact of Their Lies. Claire and Jamie will find themselves spending a great deal of their time lying to their new acquaintances and, as a result, they’ll find themselves changing in some subtle ways. “[The lying] takes its toll on both of them and, as a consequence of that, their relationship as well. I think there used to being very honorable and honest people and we’ve seen that mostly in season 1 — kind of being the best of themselves that they can be. And now in this season there’s a lot of duplicity, there’s a lot of manipulating, there’s a lot of double-dealing. They’re making friends and then double-crossing them. And it’s not the nicest thing to watch of these two characters and I think that in allowing that shadow-side of themselves to have a presence, it seeps in to their psyche and into their souls and it definitely has an affect on them.”

Returning to Scotland. The gorgeous sets and beautiful dresses of Paris will take us through the first half of the season, but eventually the action will return to Scotland. How successful will Claire and Jamie be during their time in France? Caitriona had a rather ominous warning to share with us: “I think as the lines of fate draw closer, the pressure keeps building on this couple and we will see them get more and more desperate, but as a team they try and do everything within their power to fight.”

OUTLANDER airs on Saturdays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on Starz (U.S.) and on Sundays at 10:00 p.m. on Showcase in Canada.

CONTAINMENT Preview: Anarchy and an Unknown Virus

March 24, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

containment

CONTAINMENT, the new series from producer Julie Plec, begins with a mysterious and deadly epidemic breaking out in Atlanta. As soon as the severity of the situation becomes clear, a vast urban quarantine space is created. While officials search for a cure, those trapped within the “containment area” are forced to fight for their lives.

Outside the quartantine area is police officer Lex Carnahan, who discovers that his longtime girlfriend, Jana, and his best friend/fellow officer, Jake, are trapped inside. Also quarantined inside are: 17 year-old Teresa, who is eight months pregnant and now separated from her boyfriend on the other side; Katie Frank, an elementary school teacher now placed on lockdown with her entire class, including her young son; and CDC researcher Dr. Victor Cannerts, the doctor who initially made the controversial call to quarantine the area and is now racing to find a cure for the virus.

Outside, Dr. Sabine Lommers is leading the government efforts to contain the outbreak, and has asked for Lex’s help in enforcing the cordon – which grows increasingly difficult as the public trust deteriorates. And apparently the public should be worried because journalist Leo starts unraveling a conspiracy within the official story.

CONTAINMENT will premiere on Tuesday, April 19 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

THE X-FILES Season Finale Recap: I Thought I Was Kidding All Those Times I Called Scully My Lady And Savior But…

February 22, 2016 By Shana Lieberman Leave a Comment

the x-files

Chris Carter promised a cliffhanger for THE X-FILES’ season 10 finale. Understatement of the decade, Mr. Carter. In a final episode that felt more like one of those disaster-themed summer blockbusters than a television show, Dana Scully finally found at least one of the answers she’d so often sought: Her abduction had given her the key to her own survival and maybe even saving the world. Armed with science, logic, and a ton of alien DNA, Scully’s kind of like Buffy at this point, assuming THE X-FILES gets an eleventh season.

She saved the world. A lot.

And so it begins. Much like its Mulder-centric counterpart in the season premiere, “My Struggle II” opened with one of those voiceovers THE X-FILES has always done so well. This time, the focus was on one Dana Katherine Scully. Her version of the events in the original run of THE X-FILES was shared with an audience, setting up enough history and emotional kickback to that history to make it very clear that this finale was not going to be an easy one to watch.

Scully wanted clear answers about her abduction. She wanted the truth…And it was about time she got both.

With the voiceover complete and the stage set, the story began with Scully entering the X-files office — where she apparently still isn’t worthy of either her name on the door or a desk, even after all of these years of seeking the truth alongside Spooky Mulder — only to find that her partner was nowhere to be found. It seemed that Mulder had been watching Tad O’Malley’s newly-returned conspiracy talk show before simply vanishing.

Scully was, in fact, so “fine” upon watching said talk show on Mulder’s computer that she was startled by Mulder’s ringing phone. The caller? O’Malley, who invited “Dana” (it’s Agent Scully, you jerk) out to the Unremarkable House, where he was supposed to have had a meeting with Mulder, only to show up and find that the house had been destroyed.

Sorry, Fox William Mulder’s not home.

After the ever-skeptical Dana Scully argued with Tad O’Malley about the existence of alien DNA in every human, she called the police to report Mulder missing and made her way back to the X-files office, where she met with Agents Skinner and Einstein. All Einstein wanted to do was argue with her fellow scientist about the “pure science fiction” of Scully’s alien DNA story.

Ok, Einsten. Two pieces of advice: One, the “science fiction” line is Scully’s; two, you should probably talk less when Scully and Skinner are trying to find Mulder. They’ve been there, done this, at least a thousand times. Let the adults work, little girl.

(If only John Doggett had been here to talk about how determined he was to “find Moldah…”)

When asked why Mulder would have gone off on his own without her and refused to answer her calls, Scully said he was afraid of her judgment on his mental state. Or, you know, it could have just been that that’s how Fox Mulder has always operated; and you simply can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

Putting the science in science fiction. Two skeptical medical-doctors-slash-FBI-agents walk into Our Lady of Sorrows…I feel like the end of that should be a joke, but unfortunately, it’s not.

As Scully and Einstein made their way to the hospital for Scully to scientifically prove to Einstein that the alien DNA truly existed, they were met by a very sick man. As Scully later deduced, the cause of this man’s illness was anthrax, to which he had been willingly exposed via vaccine. Live vaccination has been used by the military to prevent soldiers in case of biological warfare, but with weakened immune systems, actual infection occurs.

Scully’s initial guess, although Einstein wasn’t having any of it, was that the alien DNA was responsible for killing immune systems. Einstein, due to what I can only assume was a death wish, outright told Scully she was wrong; but as it turned out, Scully had made a little bit of a mistake. As she found by testing Einstein’s DNA and seeing that nothing alien was present, there was something more going on here. By putting their collective scientific minds together and finally admitting the reality that “…the science we were taught takes us but a distance toward the truth,” Scully and Einstein realized that our lady and savior’s alien DNA was actually what was keeping her healthy.

The Spartan Virus was responsible for breaking the infected people’s immune systems through ripping away the ADA gene, but those with the alien DNA were, somehow, protected. So, for some unknown reason, the abduction and testing that led to Scully’s cancer and was supposedly done, at least in part, to punish Mulder for getting too close to the truth…saved Scully from becoming ill over twenty years later. She would be one of the chosen few that would survive this massive outbreak and destruction, all because she’d been used as a pawn in a game once.

The important takeaway from this is that Dana Scully is The Chosen One. Again, she’s a lot like Buffy on that front.

Whatever the failed logic is in that explanation, Dana Katherine Scully became the potential savior of all humankind. (All humankind except one Fox Mulder, but we’ll get to that later.) As the situation became like something out of a Robin Cook novel, yet blamed on the aliens instead of the monkeys this time, Scully amped up her own magical life force to create a vaccine and save us all. With Mulder gone, Scully needed Einstein’s help with building theory, especially when the alien sequence initially didn’t show on a test, but Scully is our lady and savior.

Glory, amen.

About that betrayal. Monica Reyes also played a major role in helping Scully find the answers she needed to, assuming THE X-FILES returns and ends on something other than an apocalyptic note, save the world. But the way she came by the crucial information she provided was neither pleasant to hear nor the most in-character story that’s ever been written.

In the midst of explaining to an increasingly and irritatingly in denial Einstein that she’d tested her own DNA six weeks ago (ok, so it’s only been six weeks? Sure, we’ll go with that…) because of her own mysterious history, Scully received a phone call from an unknown number. I guess she didn’t recognize Reyes’ voice, even after all the quality time they spent together while Mulder was first abducted, then on the run (or out buying ice cream, if you’d prefer)?

Scully had to be told the caller was someone who had been there for her when she’d needed help in the past before realizing the woman who was with her, talking about singing whale songs when she gave birth to William, was on the other end of the line.

And yes, Reyes was there for Scully back in the dark, Mulderless days. They were close friends — or so I’d thought — by the time THE X-FILES ended its run with its ninth season. Reyes was the one Scully repeatedly called for help keeping her son safe and was one of a handful of people she’d ever let hold him without threatening to shoot. She was there when Scully made the painful decision to give William away; Reyes was also instrumental in helping Mulder and Scully go on the run in the original series finale.

What has Reyes been up to since 2002? Apparently, she was summoned by none other than the Cigarette Smoking Man himself and offered a deal to save her life if she became, like, his neck cigarette holder? And she accepted. The loyal, caring Reyes, who’d always been able to read people for their positive or negative “vibes,” was suddenly in league with a C.G.B. Spender who was so nastily burned, he’d needed his face reconstructed and his neck turned into an emphysema stick sucking hole.

Reyes. Seriously? Our lady and savior, Dana Katherine Scully, wasn’t impressed with her former bestie. Scully even went so far as to ask why Reyes had even bothered to contact her, other than to admit what a coward she was.

Reyes redeemed herself as quickly as anyone could, given the situation, by providing Scully with the key information — that only those selected and given the technology shared by the aliens back in the 1950s were safe — proving herself to be a major, major player in this finale. But was it worth it to drag a once-beloved character so far by turning her into such a traitor? I’m not sure.

Scully, in her infinite kindness, did actually refer to Reyes as a “friend” when sharing her findings with Einstein later, so at least there’s that. Maybe they’ll make up and sing some whale songs together when this is all over — if it’s ever all over, that is.

We’re gonna find Mulder. While Scully and Einstein put their science brains together to stop the massive outbreaks, Mulder was doing the Mulder thing, taking off on his own. At one point, Scully tried calling him — probably for at least the thousandth time — and broke hearts, alien and human alike, with practically begging him to pick up.

He didn’t pick up. If anyone’s surprised, I suggest that they watch THE X-FILES again from the beginning and count the number of times this has happened, always with bad results.

It was pretty evident from the first time we saw him that Mulder wasn’t in the best of health, and it looked like he’d been in some sort of physical altercation, too. As we learned from Reyes, Mulder had been summoned by Cancer Man; but as we saw via flashback, Mulder had destroyed his own home when the person his father sent to fetch him came to the door.

…and then off Mulder drove, in increasingly terrible shape, to find Evil Daddy in South Carolina. Because Scully was otherwise occupied, Skinner called Agent Miller to hunt Mulder down. Apparently, Scully wasn’t smart enough to find Mulder’s phone tracker application on his laptop, but Miller found it instantly.

Sure. Fine. Whatever.

Despite being sick, Mulder’s physical attacks, on both whichever henchman The Cigarette Smoking Man sent to find him and our loathed villain himself, were the stuff of action hero legends. And his refusal to join the conspiracy was the embodiment of every good thing Fox Mulder has ever been. Being such a loving father, Spender dangled Scully in front of Mulder as some sort of blackmail, only causing Mulder to threaten him if he hurt her in any way. Again, classic Mulder. And classic Emphysema Man with not caring enough to save Mulder’s life when he refused to turn, choosing to gloat over his failing state instead.

Eventually, Miller found Mulder and took him away from devil’s lair…but it might have been too late.

Hell hath no fury… Finally in possession of her self-created cure, Scully received a call from Miller with his and Mulder’s whereabouts. After leaving plenty of vaccine with Einstein to save the doctors at Our Lady of Sorrows, Scully did what Scully always does when Mulder’s in trouble: She dropped everything to go save him.

Driving against traffic, then rushing on foot to find Mulder and Miller, Scully arrived with the vaccine…and basically ignored Miller’s presence once she laid eyes on Mulder. It was no “Mulder, it’s me,” but her “Mulder, I’m here” was a powerful moment in and of itself. Scully’s here/there for Mulder. That’s a big deal, even after all of these years.

Bittersweet smile planted firmly on her face (oh, welcome back to The Pain Files, everybody), Scully listened as Mulder told her that “Old Smokey” had saved her and he guessed he should thank the man, all while Scully made the horrible realization that Mulder might be too far gone for her vaccine to help him.

Pause.

If Scully’s abduction gave her the life-and-world-saving alien DNA, how did Mulder’s abduction and subsequent near transformation into a super soldier not worthy of alien DNA? Are we to believe that Scully’s use anti-virals to save his life over a decade ago were what damned him now? Or was he just never deemed worthy in the first place?

Un-pause.

And then the big kicker…What would save Mulder? Stem cells. Whose stem cells? Remember when I said William was hanging over everything, and I hope he played a big part in the finale? Someone at THE X-FILES was listening. William’s stem cells should have Scully’s magical protection from the virus, so if she can find him before Mulder dies…

…but then it ended? Yes, THE X-FILES season 10 ended on a huge, huge cliffhanger. Mulder on the brink of death, Scully realizing she’d have to hunt down William and use him to save his father’s life — so much for giving the kid up to avoid having him used in this game — and…bright, white light coming from the sky. Add a zoom in on one of Gillian Anderson’s lovely eyes, and there you have it.

THE X-FILES is over. Hopefully, it’s not forever. I want to believe it will return.

Additional thoughts:

  • I don’t know whether Chris Carter is a madman, a genius, or some sadistic combination of the two. With the leads’ schedules what they are and no guarantee that this thing was going to be successful, ending on the traditional cliffhanger was gutsy. Add the type of cliffhanger to the mix, and I’m simultaneously disappointed and impressed.
  • I’m still hurt about Reyes. It’s going to take a while to get over that one, but I loved having Annabeth Gish back. At least there’s that.
  • Mulder and Scully were separated for 99% of this finale. Given that it could have been the last episode of THE X-FILES, ever, I don’t know if that was the smartest choice. The draw of the series has always been the dynamic of their partnership — regardless of whether or not one wants to believe it was platonic — so having the two spend so much time apart is somewhat disappointing.
  • “We go out with a frightful, deafening silence.” Um, basically.
  • Dana Scully may be the world’s lady savior in Chris Carter’s fictional world, but David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are television’s gods and saviors in their own right. I think I’ll end this final recap of THE X-FILES (again, hopefully just for now) with that.

THE X-FILES Premiere Recap: A New Conspiracy for A New Era

January 25, 2016 By Shana Lieberman Leave a Comment

the x-files

THE X-FILES finally made its return to television after over a decade, and the first installment of its six-episode revival turned all the old truths inside out. With David Duchovny’s Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully separated both personally and professionally and Mulder himself a man who had all but given up on searching for the truth, perhaps the most difficult obstacle for this return to attack was finding a way to bring both of its main characters back to their former world. With the help of new additions like Joel McHale as paranoid conservative conspiracy theorist Tad O’Malley and Annet Mahendru as Sveta (like Madonna, apparently, she’s lacking in a last name), “My Struggle” did just that. There’s a new conspiracy afoot and relationships to explore, both old and new…So the question is, are we ready to believe?

Getting caught up to speed. When “My Struggle” opened with a voiceover from Fox Mulder, introducing himself and giving an exceptionally brief retelling of the original series’ story, there was already evidence of Mulder’s disillusionment. There was something present in Duchovny’s voice, something in the way those photos were just tossed on the table in the retelling that screamed, “something’s wrong here!” Perhaps the final and most telling proof of our former believer’s struggle was the moment when the entire collection of photos went up in flames, with a photo of Mulder and Scully together the first to be sacrificed to the embers.

Pain, anyone? This is only the beginning.

Getting the gang back together. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. Welcome back to THE X-FILES. Welcome back, too, to Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner, especially since it’s his phone call to Scully that set everything in motion. When Mulder was unreachable, Skinner called Scully, who we found still working at Our Lady of Sorrows. Mulder, on the other hand, was living some sort of isolationist, weirdo life as far as I could tell. Maybe that’s what happens when your life’s work gets you nowhere, and your touchstone has moved on to other things.

After a tense phone call, in which it was revealed that Scully was supposed to be done with UFOs because of the “stranglehold they put on [her] very existence,” and Mulder thought his entire life had been turned into a punchline, the two were finally reunited face-to-face. It’s not like these two  ever had an easy relationship, though, so let’s not be surprised that there was a fair amount of disagreement and that certain push and pull between the two partners right from the very start.

Another return to form? When Mulder entered his old office and had a chat with Skinner for the first time, that same old underlying mistrust, despite everything Skinner had done to work on his side, was back. So, too, was Mulder’s “I want to believe” poster — right back on the floor after the last image of it in the original series saw Doggett rolling it up for safe-keeping — which he actually kicked and ripped. The pencils were still in the ceiling; the only thing missing was Mulder’s collection of X-files, which was what started the argument with Skinner.

At this point, Mulder had everything he needed, save for his own beliefs, to get back to business. Scully? Check. Skinner? Check. Basement office? A lot worse for wear (not like that’s never happened before), but check.

That just left a story to chase, and Tad O’Malley delivered. Big time.

A new conspiracy for a new era. Tad O’Malley brought with him the promise of a new, improved government conspiracy for Mulder and Scully to investigate. He claimed he was going to blow it wide open with their help.

But Mulder wasn’t biting. Neither was Scully, still the ultimate skeptic. Nothing like a paranoid “news” host to make Fox Mulder look sane, at least for a few minutes.

Cue Sveta, who claimed to have been interviewed by Mulder years ago, after her first of many abductions. Mulder didn’t remember her, but he and Scully stuck around to hear her story. It was one they (and we) had heard before: multiple abductions, alien experiments, impregnation only for the babies to be taken away, and lost memories from the time of the abductions, though certain parts returned. It was all there, and even though O’Malley supposedly knew who Mulder and Scully were, he actually thought he needed to explain to Scully about the memory wiping. Scully, who had basically no memory of her own abduction and suffered so much.

Sveta also claimed to have alien DNA, which Doctor Scully was tasked with testing. During that time, Sveta revealed she had certain abilities, like reading minds (Gibson Praise, anyone?). Scully believed exactly zero of Sveta’s claims. That is, until Sveta read her like a book. While it probably didn’t require mind-reading skills to notice that Mulder and Scully were once an item, Sveta also knew why Scully ended the relationship, as well as the existence of her son.

Cue the first time I needed to write “Gillian’s face. Scully’s in pain, and so am I because of it” in my notes.

While Scully was busy with the scientific side of things, Mulder was off with Tad, digging up the paranoia. Little Fox Mulder, who saw his sister abducted by aliens and had been obsessed with them ever since, finally got to see his first UFO — when not being abducted by one, that is. In that moment, his childish delight showed us a glimpse of who Mulder might have been, had he never been involved with the X-files. More important to the narrative, however, was his discovery that the government was using technology gained from this craft but not to prevent an alien invasion as we had previously been told.

At this point, Mulder went back to see Sveta on his own. After asking her why she’d glanced at O’Malley before answering the questions about her alien babies, she said it was because she was afraid of what would happen to her if she told the truth: She didn’t believe she’d been abducted by aliens; she believed everything that was done to her was done to her by men.

So, here’s the big twist: The entire alien invasion story that Mulder was fed in the original series was a lie; it was only ever a conspiracy of men. A dark, dirty conspiracy of selfish, power-hungry men. Interestingly enough, when Mulder had nearly given up somewhere around late season four or early season five (think “Gethsemane” and/or “Redux,”) he had had this exact idea. So, actually, this new conspiracy isn’t quite as new as one might believe, except for the parts where current events were effortlessly folded into it.

After calling Scully in the middle of an apparent date with O’Malley (ew) and raving about his new truth, Mulder did what Mulder always did best: He hung up on her to continue investigating on his own. Because that always worked out so well.

The next day, when Scully still hadn’t heard back from Mulder, she hunted him down, had a classic “Mulder, you’re on dangerous ground” argument with him that could fit into nearly any episode of the original incarnation of THE X-FILES, and stormed off to her car in the middle of obvious emotional distress.

But then O’Malley showed up. Again. This guy. I’m with Scully on this one: He’s “full of charming b.s.”

As it turned out, Mulder invited O’Malley and Sveta both — but didn’t invite Scully because he figured she wouldn’t believe him, not that she’d stuck by him for all those years — to discuss the new alien conspiracy. Aliens exist, but they neither have nor have had any relation to the government. Some key points on that:

  • It goes back to the last century, with the conditions of the Cold War era the perfect time for “actual execution” due to the political and economic climate.
  • After World War II, the H-bombs drew alien life forms to Earth, “concerned for mankind and the threat of our self-destruction.”
  • Alien technology was studied in secret, as ordered and sanctioned by world leaders. (Hidden government experiments are historical fact. Mulder brought up both the Tuskegee Airmen and Henrietta Lacks as examples. There’s good reading on Lacks out there, if anyone wants a recommendations…)
  • Abductions were all staged, using the alien technology recovered from crash sites like Roswell.
  • The goal: the takeover of America “and then the world itself, by any means necessary, however violent, or cruel or efficient.” Cue O’Malley rambling on about droughts, 9/11 as a hoax to enslave Americans through constant warfare, NSA spying…and here we had every strangely believable and therefore scary connection to the current era of distrust and turmoil in the world.

Scully, still the true skeptic, wasn’t having any of it. On top of sitting through both Mulder and O’Malley’s rants with a permanent, trademarked skepti-brow and barely-held-back eye-roll, Scully left the meeting after labeling their ideas with: fear-mongering, bogus, paranoia, and other colorful terms. The ultimate nail in the coffin? Scully said Sveta, who was “the key to all of this,” according to Foxy, didn’t even have any alien DNA.

…except that, later, we found out Scully had retested the DNA and found Sveta did have alien junk in her genome. By this point, it was far too late for Sveta, who apologized for her “lies” via the media, only to have her car stopped by either alien or human forces (you choose) and…kaboom! Evidence destroyed.

This new take on THE X-FILES is timely, but it does little, if anything, to explain the goals of the rebel aliens from the original mythology. It also makes the sacrifice of the Syndicate’s children, including Samantha Mulder and Jeffrey Spender, to be even more despicable. It’ll be interesting to see where this goes.

The elephant in the room. I’ve done little, if any discussion of the state of Mulder and Scully’s personal relationship so far, but since MSR and Philes basically defined shipping, it has to be addressed. If Sveta’s mind-reading skills are believed, Scully left Mulder after diagnosing him with depression. That is simultaneously the only sort of ending to their relationship that would make sense and something that makes no sense whatsoever.

After everything Mulder and Scully went through together, through the original episodes and films, it seemed unlikely that anything could ever permanently tear them apart. Even Mulder’s death couldn’t do it — Scully just used her medical training and working knowledge of the alien virus to bring him back.

On the other hand, between the aforementioned “stranglehold” that this work put on Scully’s life, her admission to Mulder that she worried about him out in the house all alone, and even her comment about being afraid of the effects of isolation on him back in the second film, it would be perfectly logical to believe she simply couldn’t watch Mulder destroy himself any longer. And with lines like “I’m always happy to see you” from Scully, followed by “and I’m always happy to find a reason” from Mulder, even after Mulder got his jab in about how getting out of the house had been good for her, the emotional attachment doesn’t appear to have gone anywhere at all.

The relationship is, in some sense, what it always was — the back-and-forth, with a side of underlying angst — and, at least in this episode, it appeared as if the separation was as painful for Mulder and Scully as it was difficult to watch for viewers who’d rooted for them to be together for so many years. It’s the contradiction that makes this just another classic element to THE X-FILES: In the original series, their relationship was always there and not there, more a collection of loaded moments open to interpretation than anything clearly defined — until the whole “Millennium” kiss and the creation of William, of course…

With the chemistry between Anderson and Duchovny as magical as ever, it will certainly be interesting to see how, and if, these two make their way back to one another. I don’t personally buy the idea that a happy couple can’t be compelling to watch; but if the current trajectory of this relationship serves a purpose in the end without destroying either of the two leads in the process, I’m willing to give it a shot.

And one more thing. CGB Spender made his unexplained return at the close of the episode, delivering a classically vague and ominous line: “We have a small problem. They’ve reopened the X-files.”

Uh, oh. Are you ready for this, Philes? I don’t know if there’s a choice…With THE X-FILES’ return and a new conspiracy for Mulder to obsess over, there’s nothing left for Scully and the rest of us to do but follow him and hope that, this time around, we uncover the actual truth.

Don’t miss the next new episode of THE X-FILES on its regular night and time on January 25 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.

NBC Announces Midseason Premiere Dates: THE CARMICHAEL SHOW, CROWDED and More

January 22, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

carmichael show

NBC has announced the premiere dates for several new and returning shows in late winter and early spring.

“THE CARMICHAEL SHOW” – Sunday, March 13, 9 p.m. with back-to-back episodes for week one; preview episode Tuesday, March 8, 10:30 p.m.

Inspired by THE LIFE of comedian Jerrod Carmichael, the series follows Jerrod and his opinionated North Carolina family as they navigate topics that all families face today in America. Nothing is too uncomfortable to explore, including police protests, guns and religion. Jerrod often finds himself debating such issues with his old-school father, Joe (David Alan Grier), his devoutly religious mother, Cynthia (Loretta Devine), his progressive live-in girlfriend, Maxine (Amber Stevens West), his recently separated brother, Bobby (Rel Howery), and Bobby’s estranged and outspoken wife, Nekeisha (Tiffany Haddish). And somewhere in the middle of all of their disagreeing is the heart of this family.

The March 8 preview episode of THE CARMICHAEL SHOW at 10:30 p.m. will immediately follow a half-hour preview of LITTLE BIG SHOTS, which will be preceded by a two-hour episode of THE VOICE

“CROWDED” – Sunday, March 20, 9:30 p.m.; preview Tuesday, March 15, 10-11 p.m.

From the executive producers of HOT IN CLEVELAND and GRIMM comes this very timely comedy that proves life is crazy with a full house, especially the second time around.

After 20 years of parenting, empty nesters Mike (Patrick Warburton, “Seinfeld”) and Martina (Carrie Preston, “True Blood”) are finally reclaiming their wild side. But when both of their two grown daughters (Miranda Cosgrove, “iCarly,” and Mia Serafino, “Shameless”) unexpectedly move back in and Mike’s parents (Stacy Keach, “NCIS: New Orleans,” and Carlease Burke, “Switched at Birth”) scratch their plans to spend their golden years in Florida, their roost is full again.

The two preview episodes of CROWDED at 10 p.m. March 15 will be coming out of a two-hour episode of THE VOICE.

“HEARTBEAT” – Wednesday, March 23, 8 p.m.; preview Tuesday, March 22, 9 p.m.

HEARTBEAT is a character-driven medical series that follows the professional and personal life of world-renowned heart transplant surgeon Dr. Alex Panttiere (Melissa George, “The Slap”). There is nothing conventional about Dr. Panttiere, who is as cutting edge and unorthodox in the OR as she is with the two men in her life. Her approach to medicine is without boundaries, as is her approach to everything else in her world.

Between Dr. Panttiere’s hectic hospital life where she is caught between two brilliant but stubborn surgeons (Dave Annable and Don Hany) and her household of two kids and a gay rock star ex-husband (Joshua Leonard), Alex is constantly striving to overcome numerous daily obstacles and be the best mother and doctor possible.

Jamie Kennedy, D.L. Hughley, Shelley Con, Maya Erskine, Joshua Leonard and JLouis Mills also star.

On March 22, THE VOICE will serve as a lead-in to a preview of HEARTBEAT.

“GAME OF SILENCE” – Thursday, April 7, 10 p.m.

Four best friends have a dark secret they thought was buried 25 years ago, but they soon discover that you can’t hide your past forever. From the executive producers of CSI and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS comes a gripping new drama about friendship, love, revenge and the moral dilemma of how far one will go in the pursuit of justice.

Jackson Brooks (David Lyons, “Revolution”) is a successful attorney who seems to have it all. He’s engaged to a wonderful woman who happens to be his boss, Marina (Claire Van Der Boom, “Hawaii Five-O”), and he’s on the fast track to becoming partner at his firm, but his world is turned upside down when his long-lost childhood friends unexpectedly reappear after 25 years.

Jackson, Gil Harris (Michael Raymond James, “True Blood”) and Shawn Cook (Larenz Tate, “Rush”) always stuck together, like brothers. They spent their boyhood summers in the small town of Brennan, Texas, swimming in the quarry, shooting bottle rockets and doing everything they could to mine the fun out of small-town life. But their idyllic world turned chaotic one fateful summer afternoon when a well-intentioned and heroic attempt to save their friend Jessie (Bre Blair, “Last Vegas”) from her alcoholic mother ultimately cost the 13-year-old boys nine months at Quitman Youth Detention Facility where their lives were changed forever.

Now, 25 years later, the nightmare of the worst nine months of their lives has resurfaced, uprooting a mystery even deeper than their buried past. The brotherhood must now band together to right the wrongs of their shared past – a journey that will push the limits of their loyalty and ignite an unquenchable thirst for revenge.

The cast also includes Conor O’Farrell (“The Lincoln Lawyer”), Deidrie Henry (“Justified”), Demetrius Grosse (“Saving Mr. Banks”) and Derek Phillips (“Friday Night Lights”).

LUCIFER: The Cast Introduces Chloe, Dan and Dr. Linda

January 21, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

lucifer

While the demons and the angels are engaging in their age-old rivalries and revels, the humans on LUCIFER are just going about their daily lives, none-the-wiser about the supernatural elements around them. But all of their lives will interact soon enough when Chloe investigates a murder outside of Lucifer’s club and he decides to pair up with her to help her solve crimes. That, in turn, introduces Dan — Chloe’s estranged husband — to Lucifer. And Dr. Linda enters the picture when she’s visited by Chloe and Lucifer during the course of their investigation. But she’s not a one-off character, because when Lucifer decides to return to her for some therapy (and a little bit of hanky panky), Linda becomes one of his confidantes.

During a visit to the LUCIFER set in Vancouver, Lauren German (Detective Chloe Dancer), Rachael Harris (Dr. Linda Martin) and Kevin Alejandro (Dan) spoke to journalists about their characters and their complicated personal connections to each other, as well as to Lucifer.

Chloe’s Reaction to Lucifer’s “Powers”. Lucifer isn’t one to mince words and he’ll flat out tell people that he’s immortal or he’ll “compel” them to reveal their secrets. He keeps doing this in front of Chloe and it assists them in their investigations, but he’s perplexed when this compulsion doesn’t work on Chloe herself. What’s Chloe’s reaction to this strange behavior? “I haven’t really clocked it,” German explained. “All I know is that Lucifer has told me ‘why don’t I affect you?’ And I’m just like ‘I don’t know, really, what you’re talking about’. I mean, I see Lucifer do his thing, but it’s almost like watching that show LONG ISLAND MEDIUM. I’ve seen psychics and it sort of looks like that.”

Chloe’s Relationship With Her Mother. When Chloe separates from her husband, she moves into her mother’s Malibu cottage (see a photo tour), along with her daughter. While Chloe used to be an actress for a little while, her mother was in the profession for a long time and reached a respectable level of notoriety. Chloe’s mother won’t be seen in any early episodes, but her presence is definitely felt. “[Chloe] reveals to some guy [in an upcoming episode] ‘it was really annoying. I grew up with paparazzi always around. My mom always took the attention,” German said. “So I think there’s probably some really cool issues to explore there. We just haven’t happened to go there yet.”

Chloe’s on Thin Ice at Her Job. In the pilot episode, we get the sense that Chloe is not very respected by her peers as a result of a case she worked on. German explained that “there’s a case called the Palmetto case and it’s a case where Chloe had a gut instinct that something wasn’t right, something didn’t look right on the paperwork. Everyone said ‘This isn’t your case. Go focus on [something else], not this.’ She went and followed through with it anyway and she saw something that didn’t add up. Basically she saw something that smells dirty. And everyone in the department completely ostracizes her. ‘You ruined this, you screwed up, you made us look bad, you’re causing problems for everyone. Everyone thinks we’re a joke.’ I’m being a little hyperbolic, but in a nutshell that’s what happens. That’s where we pick up in the pilot. I’ve just been almost fired for trying to get the right answers to what I feel happened.” Don’t forget about this important case, LUCIFER fans, because it’s something that continues to unfold as the series does.

The State of Chloe and Dan’s Marriage. As Alejandro explains, Dan is “Chloe’s husband — but they’re currently separated. He’s a real honest, good cop. He’s good at what he does but unfortunately that was the problem in the relationship. It was more about work and sort of forgot about the family a little bit. Now that she’s laid it on him and said ‘Hey, this is what’s happening, we’re getting separated,” he’s struggling really hard to get [their relationship] back.”

Dan and Lucifer. The devil doesn’t think much of Dan when he first meets him. And Alejandro explains that “you’ll absolutely see [more of that tension] going forward. As Dan tries to let Chloe know he’s the right guy. There’s this other man in the picture that he’s a little jealous of and doesn’t quite see what she sees in him….Just the presence of Lucifer threatens everything about Dan and everything he really wants. He wants his family back, he wants to be the alpha male and provide, and have a balanced relationship and Lucifer comes in and throws everything off for him.” While Dan is clearly frustrated by Lucifer, the devil doesn’t necessarily feel the same way about the human. “Lucifer doesn’t really give Dan the time of day. So he’s a complete mystery to my character,” Alejandro said. “Honestly, all Dan sees is a really handsome guy in a suit, a charming guy [and not a supernatural being].” Dan won’t be very immersed in the world of the supernatural, but he “he takes a few really funny trips to Lux. He’s definitely a duck out of water. You can see his awkwardness and how he deals with all these pretty people around him.”

Dan’s Backstory. “I think he just wants to be the best,” Alejandro said. “He’s a little bit egotistical, he wants to be the best at everything. He leads with that bravado and I think he just demands respect. He comes from a lot of challenges that he’s overcome. You get to figure out more about who he is, later in the season. I can’t really reveal [it now], but he’s definitely gone through a lot to get to where he is and he doesn’t want to do anything to destroy his reputation.

What Does Linda Think of Lucifer? Lucifer is attending therapy because he’s feeling resentful about his eternal job (courtesy of dear old dad) but what does Linda think of him, particularly since he’s brutally honest with her? Harris said that “it’s an intriguing case where Linda believes he’s delusional. He says he’s the devil. He’s completely honest with her, but she’s like ‘Wow, he’s really speaking in archetypes.’ So I think he has serious father-son issues and, in fact, he does. It’s like the epitome of father-son issues.” And how is their personal relationship complicating their professional one? “She’s faced with her own feelings and her own ethics as to what she’s doing because [she’s thinking] ‘I’m not crazy. I’m not a crazy person. I’m an ethical doctor that knows exactly [what I should be doing but] I don’t know why I can’t stop with him. He’s like a drug. But I also know I’m intrigued by his story, and I want to help him….I think the great conflict in the whole show is he’s trying to figure out who he is, and my role in the show is to help him and, at the same time, I’m finding out my own identity.”

Is Linda Stuck in Her Office? No, according to Harris, who said that her character will branch out a bit more. “Yes, in the beginning, I am focusing on helping him. And I’m also interested in getting it on with him. Which I like. It’s fun. But then there are opportunities. I do get outside of the office. So there’s other places it’s gonna go, which is really fun.”

Future Guest Stars. There’s a few well-known guest stars coming up on LUCIFER, including Jim Rash (COMMUNITY) and Tom Sizemore.

Don’t miss the series premiere of LUCIFER on Monday, January 25 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
