Exclusive: Creator Sean Smith Talks GREEK

May 4, 2009 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

sean_smith_greek

On our recent trip to Los Angeles, the TV Addict was lucky enough to be given a tour of the set of GREEK by Scott Michael Foster (Cappie), Dilshad Vadsaria (Rebecca) and Sean Smith.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Sean, Who?”

Well, Smith may not be a household name like a Whedon or an Abrams just yet, but give him time. After-all, he’s had some pretty good on-the-job training, parlaying a writing assistant gig on EVERWOOD, to full-fledged writing assignments with SUPERNATURAL and SUMMERLAND; Culminating in a hit show of his very own — GREEK on ABC Family.

Which is what we’re here to talk about, as Smith was kind enough to not only take myself (alongside fellow bloggers Kathie, Amrie and Rae) on a tour of the set of GREEK, but answer some burning questions about what fans can expect as GREEK’s fourth chapter comes to a close.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: April 30, 2009

April 30, 2009 By theTVaddict 6 Comments

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
UGLY BETTY (8PM ABC, City in Canada)
In honor of UGLY BETTY returning to ABC tonight after a far too long five week hiatus, this TV Addict thought, who better to get to tease tonight’s episode than Michael Urie himself; Who was kind, nay, awesome enough to send this direct tweet to theTVaddict, “She’s back! Betty’s all new! Marc gets into Christina’s sex life! What?! How?! Why?! Directed by Richard Heus (dir of Mode After Hours).”

PARKS AND RECREATION (8PM ABC, City in Canada)
Andy (Chris Pratt) plans a surprise for Ann (Rashida Jones). One which probably doesn’t involve picking up and moving to a small Colorado town called Everwood. But hey, a TV Addict can dream, can’t he?

THE OFFICE (9PM NBC, Global in Canada)
While we’re not really sure what to expect from the denizens of Dunder Mifflin on “Casual Friday,” we’re kinda hoping it involves Dwight Schrute and some sort of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Raptor uniform. So say we all?

GREY’S ANATOMY (9PM ABC, CTV in Canada)
Sharon Lawrence continues to corner the market on unstable TV moms (see: PRIVILEGED, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and HIDDEN PALMS) by dropping by Seattle Grace to check up on her daughter Izzie.

30 ROCK (9:30PM NBC, City in Canada)
Do you really need to know anything else outside of the fact that tonight’s episode has Jenna adopting a monkey? If so here are two more reasons why tonight’s 30 ROCK is the very definition of must see TV: Elaine Stritch returns with nasty memories of Jack’s father and Steve Buscemi guest stars.

PRIVATE PRACTICE (10PM ABC, “A” in Canada)
PRIVATE PRACTICE’s much improved second season concludes with so many questions up in the air (Will Naomi leave Oceanside? Will Violet choose Pete or Sheldon? Will Addison sort our her feelings for Noah?) that we’re already cleaning our floor in anticipation of our jaw dropping down to it.

Tonight’s TV Addictions: Thursday April 23, 2009

April 23, 2009 By theTVaddict 8 Comments

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING:
SMALLVILLE (8PM ABC, City in Canada)
Lois pretends she is a superhero to secure an exclusive interview…. AH HA! So that’s how E!’s Kristin Dos Santos does it!

PARKS AND RECREATION (8:30PM NBC, CityTV in Canada)
Leslie invites a reporter to cover her park project, but the resulting article isn’t what she had in mind. You know, kind of like the early reviews for PARKS AND RECREATION.

SUPERNATURAL (9PM CW)
Getting our vote for the best episode title of the season (and there’s been no shortage of great ones courtesy of Kripke) comes “Jump the Shark,” which features Sam and Dean agreeing to meet with a 19 year old man named Adam who claims to be John Winchester’s long lost son.

GREY’S ANATOMY (9PM ABC, CTV in Canada)
George, who we’re fairly sure has clocked, like what, four minutes of screen time this season outshines Alex in trauma surgery. Awkward.

Paley Festival Recap ‘09: THE MENTALIST

April 18, 2009 By theTVaddict 8 Comments

mentalist_cast_paley

Our Paley Festival adventure continues with a report from Friday night’s panel honoring THE MENTALIST featuring the cast (Simon Baker, Robin Tunney, Owain Yeoman, Amanda Righetti, missing in action Tim Kang) and creative team (Bruno Heller and Chris Demetral).

On the show’s origins:
Creator/executive producer Bruno Heller’s basic pitch for THE MENTALIST was Sherlock Homes, with a spin. “Essentially it was our attempt to get back to an old fashioned detective in which we tried to create a framework for a bravura performance by a great actor and this is the result.”

Inspiration for Thomas Jane:
“If you go to any city in America, any part of town, you’ll find a psychic on the block who is essentially applying the same trade as mentalists,” explains Heller. “They’re trying to create the illusion that they can read your mind, that they can see beyond the veil. And what they’re doing is essentially using genuine nature skills of empathy… to create the illusion of supernatural powers. And that seemed to be a very interesting moral position to be in because they’re essentially performing the function of a psychoanalyst or a priest. But at the same time they’re lying about their powers. And least that’s my opinion. I think the interesting thing about the psychics is that half the country will say they’re, it’s not real, they’re charlatans, the other half will say, no, they are truthful and profound things about them. And it’s precisely that line that mentalists walks along.”

Vick, Blago To Trash Reality… For Good?

April 16, 2009 By theTVaddict 2 Comments

For a while now, it’s seemed as if reality television was like one of those demons the Winchester boys are always hunting down on SUPERNATURAL: Get rid of one and five more pop up in their place. But there’s hope on the horizon and it comes, oddly enough, in the form of stunt casting.

Observers of the Broadway scene can always tell when a play is in danger of drawing its last breath when the show breathlessly touts the big names stepping in for short-term runs. So I’m somewhat heartened by news that two of the most vile human beings on the planet — dog-fight impresario Michael Vick and impeached, indicted seat-seller Rod Blagojevich — have signed on to do reality shows. If anyone can kill the genre, it’s these two.

Off the Chart: TheTVaddict.com Week in Review

April 5, 2009 By theTVaddict 3 Comments

weekinreview

1. 90210: That noise you just heard was 90210 finally getting interesting thanks to the introduction of Naomi’s new fast and furious guy candy (can we trademark that moniker?) Liam and Silver, who went from zero-to-crazy in less than sixty minutes.

2. LIFE ON MARS: As much as we’d like to applaud executive producers Josh Appelbaum, Scott Rosenberg and André Nemec for ending the American version of LIFE ON MARS on their own terms, it would help if we had a better understanding as to what exactly those terms were.

3. SUPERNATURAL: Regardless of whether you’re a “Sam Girl” or a “Dean Girl,” this TV Addict’s fairly confident that neither camp is complaining about Thursday’s seriously meta and super hilarious installment of SUPERNATURAL.

4. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: From the gut-wrenching play that lost the Dillon Panthers the State Championship in the closing seconds of the game to Tyra Collete’s heartbreaking college entrance essay, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS continues to be the best show on television nobody is watching.
