The Lebanon teenagers from the SUPERNATURAL 300th episode will be returning for an upcoming episode. In “Don’t Go Into the Woods”, the Winchester brothers will be completed baffled when they come up against a monster they have never heard of before. Considering these guys have been hunting all of their lives — and we’ve been watching them do it for 14 years — that’s a pretty big accomplishment. Meanwhile, Jack will be befriending the teens and will be doing his best to impress his new friends.

SUPERNATURAL 300th Episode Recap: John Winchester Returns for an Emotional Family Reunion

February 7, 2019 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

supernatural

Photo: Dean Buscher/The CW

Here’s a fact that only true SUPERNATURAL fans will know: Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Samantha Smith and Jeffrey Dean Morgan had never actually shared a scene together. Back in the pilot episode — the one and only time that Smith and Morgan appeared together on screen — Ackles and Padalecki’s characters were played by a toddler and tiny baby, respectively. Morgan shared several scenes with the boys throughout the first season and a couple of scenes in the second season, and Smith returned throughout the years before her character was officially resurrected a few years ago. But the true and complete Winchester family had never shared a single scene together with all four actors who play the roles.

Until the 300th episode, that is. In the milestone episode, Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprised a role he had left behind 12 years go (seamlessly, we might add) to bring about a reunion 14 years in the making (or is it “union”, if the group had never actually been together before?). And what a reunion it was. We began this episode with Sam and Dean in a pawn shop, one that happened to cater to the mystical objects shopper if you knew what to ask for. Unfortunately for the shop owner, the brothers knew that this procurer of magical artifacts wasn’t on the up-and0up and had recently killed a fellow hunter to increase his stash. When he attacked Sam and seem poised to kill him with a wicked sword, Dean shot and killed him. This left the boys with said cache of magical artifacts. Upon returning to Lebanon, we started to get a sense of the original conceit of the episode that was first teased at last year’s Comic-Con: that the 300th episode would show us more of the town that the brothers live in and the opinions of the people who live there. These amusing thoughts on the brothers (that something very strange is up with them) are sprinkled throughout the episode, but the real drama begins when the brothers realize that they have a magical pearl in their possession — one that can grant whatever your heart most desires.

Dean believes this artifact could be the key to removing the trapped archangel in his head, but they can’t use the pearl until they find their recently stolen car, which was taken on a joyride by the town’s newest teenager. This leads to an amusing scene of Dean flirting with an older lady in the post office in order to secure information on the teen’s whereabouts and eventually leads to an old house on the outskirts of town where the kids hang out on “Skip Day”. Unfortunately, the teens don’t realize that the Impala contains mystical artifacts — and they’re soon attacked by a killer clown ghost, which is quickly dispatched by the brothers Winchester. Except now the local teens know the truth about the supernatural and the brothers and have to keep it a secret.

Back at the bunker, Sam and Dean set up to activate the wish-granting pearl, but a blackout leads to a fight thanks to the sudden appearance of a third man. That man….is John Winchester. In a recreation from the original Sam and Dean reunion in the Pilot episode, both brothers are laid out on the floor before realizing their father has somehow made an appearance in their time. He believes it’s still 2003 and prior to the events in the show, which means he has been brought forward to 2019. We soon see that Sam and Dean have apparently caught up their father on their multiple trips to Heaven and Hell and the Men of Letters bunker, as well as all the world saving(s) they had done. Oh yeah, and Lucifer has a son who lives with them. John takes all of this in remarkable stride, but he wishes he had been there to see all of it. Enter Mary, who just so happened to be stopping by and she’s flabbergasted to see John again. The two immediately kiss and the brothers leave to give their parents some privacy.

Dean is thrilled about seeing their father again, but Sam is cautious about messing with time. Still, Dean insists his brother allow them to have one family dinner together. As Mary and Dean discuss dinner, Sam has an emotional conversation with his father. While John remembers their fight before Sam left for Stanford vividly and apologizes for the way he treated his son, Sam lets go of any resentment he has for his father. He no longer remembers the messed up things John did, he just remembers the day that John died, and he loves his father deeply. After that emotional reunion, Sam and Dean head out to buy groceries for dinner.

But something is amiss in Lebanon now. The people who had previously known Sam and Dean seem to have no memory of them and Sam quickly realizes that messing with time changed things. It created a temporal paradox and if they don’t stop this then they will become other versions of themselves — Sam will be a kale-loving motivational speaker who runs a law firm, and Dean will become a hunter who is also a fugitive.

As for what else was changed? Enter Zachariah (killed all the way back in the 100th episode) and a version of Castiel who never met the Winchesters. They’re here to investigate what’s going on with time and happen upon those teenagers from the beginning of the episode. When Sam and Dean enter the restaurant to see Cas flashing his wings, Zachariah recognizes them and orders Cas to kill them. Sam manages to kill Zachariah and since this version of Cas doesn’t know Sam and Dean, he also attacks them and nearly kills them before Sam banishes him away.

Back at the bunker, Dean is telling John about the temporal paradox and he explains that if John doesn’t return to his own time Sam will never get back into the hunting life and Mary won’t return from the dead. For John, there’s no hesitation — he’s willing to die so that Mary can live. Sam is delivering the bad news to Mary and says John should disappear when they destroy the pearl. As we cut back to John and Dean, we see an emotional moment between these two now, with John telling his eldest son that he never wanted him to continue on with his fight. But Dean is OK with how things turned out. Dinner is a quiet affair with the reality that John will soon be gone hanging over their heads, but he encourages them to enjoy the time they have left. Cue a montage of them laughing throughout their one and only meal together.

While washing the dishes in the kitchen, Sam laments that sending John back will mean things turn out exactly as they had before. But would they change things? Dean explains that he actually wouldn’t change their lives as they are now, because he’s alright with the men they have become. Back in the library, Sam, Dean and Mary are preparing to say goodbye to John. He tells Sam and Dean to take care of each other and hugs them both, telling them that he is proud of them and loves them. The waterworks begin and Mary is holding John’s hand as he disappears. Present day Castiel soon enters and asks what happened — to which Dean replies “well, there’s a story…”

And back in 2003, John Winchester awakes in the Impala thanks to the ringing of an old cell phone. It’s a young Dean on the line and John tells his son that he had the strangest dream — but a good one.

SUPERNATURAL will be on a short hiatus and will return with new episodes on March 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

SUPERNATURAL: The Cast and Producers Talk About the 300th Episode and the Show’s Legacy

February 6, 2019 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Photos: Dean Buscher/The CW

It’s hard to imagine that SUPERNATURAL is going to hit a milestone that few shows in the history of television have ever reached: 300 episode. Fourteen seasons into its run, the show about two brothers hunting supernatural creatures has introduced us to dozens of fan favorite characters, seen Sam and Dean Winchester travel to Hell and Heaven and back, and always comes back to a show about two brothers who will stop at nothing to save each other — and the world.

Back in the fall, we participated in a red carpet celebration for the show’s 300th episode, which is set to air this week, and spoke to various cast members and producers about the episode itself and the legacy of the show they hope to leave behind once Sam and Dean finally quit the hunting game. At the time of the interviews, it wasn’t yet revealed that Jeffrey Dean Morgan (who originated the role of John Winchester and hasn’t appeared on the show since the end of the second season) would be returning for the milestone episode. But we did get a sense that the episode is going to focus primarily on the town of Lebanon, which is home to the Men of Letters bunker that Sam and Dean settled into after years of living in motels. In fact, we’re going to begin the episode by learning what the townspeople think of these two men who live in their midst. “Lebanon has, at most, been a dark alley or a place where the guys go for a beer run. And to actually look at the people who live there and wonder these mysterious handsome strangers are in their midst who don’t seem to live anywhere but keep popping up. So I think that’s an interesting thing to do. But that isn’t all of the episode. It’s an umbrella over the episode,” producer Brad Buckner teased.

“The teenagers that we meet [in town] all have notions [that] they’re serial killers, they’re FBI agents…you know, crazy stuff,” showrunner Robert Singer said. “Some of the older people in town — you know, the guy at the liquor store knows what the usual order, the lady in the post office where they might pick up their mail — knows they’re just these guys. And then as the episode goes on and it gets turned on its head a little bit the town reacts in a different way and there’s a guest star that comes in that’s going to really turn the episode on its head.” That guest star, of course, is Morgan, whose character has an emotional reunion with his sons and wife (see photos) after appearing thanks to a wish that Dean makes.

While we only had a few minutes to speak to Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester) and didn’t get a chance to ask him about the 300th, his co-star Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) said that the two of them had quite a bit of input into the events of the episode. “For some weird reason [Jared] and I had gotten really inspired this year. This is such an important milestone. I was made aware today that we are of 25 shows in television history that have made this many episodes out of thousands [of TV shows]. He and I got on the horn with the guys down south and pitched a few ideas. But I think that that kind of collaboration — because we’re still fans of the show, we’re still fans of this story and these characters — but we’re also fans of the history of where this show has come from. Those were certainly elements that I wanted to have come into play. So hopefully they got inspired by a few things that we said.”

When asked how this particular milestone is different from the 100th and 200th episode, Misha Collins (Castiel) said “the 200th episode was a little bit of a meta romp. The 300th episode is going to be a little bit more reflective and a little bit more poignant and a little bit more emotional than previous centennial episodes.” Having seen the episode, we can tell you that there’s a great deal of emotion. The reunion between John, Dean, Sam and Mary is tear-inducing, particularly the individual conversations he has with his sons. Past wrongs are addressed and there’s a lot of love shared. The family dinner is a moment that Dean, in particular, has wanted since he was four years old. And it’s a conversation that Sam needed to have after a tumultuous relationship with his father, especially after he retired from hunting to attend college.

As for the show’s legacy, executive producer Phil Sgriccia said that “the way this show works, it’s about the family, about the brothers and the connection they have — both in real life and in the show. And it’s about how through thick and thin somebody will have your back and help you in times of trouble. So I just hope that people take that as part of the fun that we’re trying to have with it, but also just that when you’re down and need a hand, maybe somebody’s there to help you, just to lean on.”

Related: See photos from the SUPERNATURAL 300th episode party

“I think a lot of the success [for SUPERNATURAL] goes directly to [Eric] Kripke for having the great idea and executing the great idea, for Bob Singer for teaming up with him back them,” actor and director Richard Speigt Jr. (Gabriel/The Trickster) said. “Bob Singer for being the tentpole director and producer for all of those years with different showrunners coming and going — including Sera Gamble, Jeremy Carver, Andrew Dabb. You know, Bob’s been the consistent tone setter. Phil Sgriccia for cover the post, which is an under-sung, under-appreciated piece of the art, because the assembling of it and the editing of it — and the sound and all that — is crucial and Phil as a director and as an EP overseeing that is phenomenal. And then you obviously have Jared and Jensen who have been two guys who have been telling great stories as performers and caring as people about those stories and about those characters for all 300 episodes, from the pilot until the next time they go to shoot on Monday. They care, they put in the effort, they put in the time and the talent to making sure that the show stays as fresh and as new and as good as it was day 1. And there’s not a lot of performers out there who would do that, who would still care that much and try that hard, who would be that kind to each other and to their coworkers and fellow crew members. So I think they get a lot of the credit for making this thing happen and for us to be here celebrating it tonight.”

While it’s clear that SUPERNTURAL still has a lot of story left to tell (the show was just renewed for season 15), we couldn’t help but ask various actors (past and present) what they hoped would be the endgame for their characters. Samantha Smith (Mary Winchester) said “I can’t imagine Mary retiring. Like, how does that look? That’s just weird. Even when she had Dean, she was still hunting on the sly, right? But [at] a certain point, maybe she’ll be able to get to the point where she can actually spend most of her time just away — I don’t think a hunter wants to retire to New York City. Just in somewhere quiet where — I don’t know, there’s monsters everywhere I think about it and I just can’t imagine her ever just quitting. So hopefully not a bad end.” At the time, we asked Smith about the possibility of her character one day having an opportunity to reunite with John Winchester. She said “getting to see the love of your life again, that would be a dream come true for everyone,” which seems particularly poignant now that we know this reunion is set to happen soon enough.

Then there’s Ruth Connell (Rowena), who gave the most delightful answer to the question “where would you like your character to end up when the show ends?” by saying “I would like an ending where [Rowena] does take over the world and ascends on a pink cloud drinking champagne with various masseuses around her. With magic at her fingertips and everyone just wearing sparkling eye shadow and ballgowns below her.”

Whether SUPERNATURAL ends with ballgowns or a Winchester sacrifice, there’s no doubt that Sam and Dean will continue to fight until the end. The 300th episode of SUPERNATURAL airs on Thursday, Februry 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

SUPERNATURAL 300th Episode Photos: John Winchester Returns!

January 28, 2019 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

Papa Winchester is making a return appearance in the upcoming 300th episode of SUPERNATURAL. Last summer at San Diego Comic-Con, the producers teased that the episode would focus on the town of Lebanan, the Winchester brothers’ home base after discoverng the Men of Letters bunker in season 8. As a result, we’re going to get a sense of what the local townspeople seem to think about the male models (ahem….young men) living in their midsts. But that’s not all that’s happening — somehow, the events in town are eventually going to lead to the (temporary) return of John Winchester, which means a guest appearance by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. We’re not entirely sure how and why he’ll return, but we do know that some sort of granted wish will result in the first proper Winchester family reunion since the four characters last appeared back in the pilot episode of the show (a scene which didn’t even include stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki because their characters were babies at the time). As a bonus, we’re also going to see Kurt Fuller make a return apperance as the villanous angel Zachariah.

The 300th episode of SUPERNATURAL airs on February 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

SUPERNATURAL: Samantha Smith Talks Mary’s Return and Her Growing Relationship With her Sons

January 22, 2019 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

supernatural

Photo: Diyah Pera/The CW

Mary Winchester returns in this week’s SUPERNATURAL. Sam is in contact with his mother after Dean’s recent re-possessing by Michael to share that his elder brother is acting strangely — presumably due to the increasing noise of Michael trapped in his head and being shaken by whatever he read in Billie’s book. Dean will eventually head out to meet up with Donna for a quick visit before traveling on to Donna’s cabin, where his mother has been staying along with her new boyfriend, Bobby Singer.

For those who had hoped to see Mary and Donna meet, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer. As Samantha Smith told us on the red carpet for SUPERNATURAL’s 300th episode, the two women won’t be crossing paths in this episode. But Smith believes the two women would get along if they did get a chance to meet up: “You won’t see us meet on camera, but I think Mary loves any strong woman. So she’s going to respect and be down with [Donna].”

Expect to see more about Mary and Bobby’s developing relationship in the coming episode. When asked where their relationship will go, Smith teased, “I think more importantly is where it came from — which was camaraderie and trust and having gone through hardship together. As far as where it will go, it’s too soon to tell. They’re both very damaged people. I think weirdly Bobby is even more damaged than Mary. So that’s a lot to sort through, but the next time you see us some more of that will come to light.”

While Mary and Bobby’s relationship will continue to have to overcome hurdles, there are some solid relationships in Mary’s life: her relationship with her sons. “I think that they’ve come a lot way, again with trust and maybe the fear that she’s going to disappear again forever is abated. And I think that they’re more friends now than anything. It’s not like they’re going to listen to her, but they do have a respect and there’s so much love there. And typical Winchesters, always trying to take one for the team to protect everyone else. It’s just…we all take turns.”

While Dean is hanging out with his mother and Sam is preoccupied by his brother’s troubles, we’re also going to see the return of Mark Pellegrino’s Nick, the man formerly possessed by Lucifer. Executive Producer Phil Sgriccia teased that this episode “is kind of almost the peak of [Nick’s] storyline this season. It still continues after this, but this is a big moment.” And Donna is going to tie into what’s happening with Nick, as you can see from the photo below. In fact, Sgriccia said that Donna is involved because “she’s the sheriff, so she’s doing her sheriff duties.” Which could mean that Nick’s very bad deeds are likely going to start attracting police attention.
