THE X-FILES Sneak Peeks: A Good Old-Fashioned Monster Hunt

February 1, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

the x-files

Tonight’s all new episode of THE X-FILES (“Mulder and Scully Meet The Were-Monster”) is much in the same style as some classic X-FILES episodes such as “Jose Chung’s ‘From Outer Space'”, which makes sense since they were both written by Darin Morgan.

Blending humor with a good old-fashiond monster hunt, the episode finds Mulder struggling with his beliefs. Now he’s despondent that everything supernatural and strange he ever believed in has a rational explanation and is no longer fantastical. And so Scully tries to perk him up with a case involving a dead body found in the woods…that may have been killed by a monster.

Rhys Darby plays Guy Mann, a curious sort of fellow who gives a fantastic monologue right in the middle of the episode (to tell you any more would spoil you!). It’s a series of scenes you absolutely don’t want to miss. And Kumail Nanjiani guest stars as Pasha, a deadpan animal control worker. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have settled well in to their older Mulder and Scully roles in this episode, equally adept at melding comedy with existential drama.

Don’t miss an all new episode of THE X-FILES tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox (U.S.) and CTV (Canada).

THE MAGICIANS: Sera Gamble Talks Book Changes and Quentin & Julia’s Diverging Paths

January 25, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

the magicians

Sera Gamble and John McNamara are bringing the world of Brakebills University to life in the new Syfy series THE MAGICIANS. Based on the Lev Grossman book trilogy, THE MAGICIANS revolves around two friends who learn about the existence of magic as young adults. Only one of them gets in to the prestigious university (Quentin) and one of them doesn’t (Julia). This sets the pair on very different paths as each falls deeper into this strange and supernatural world.

During a conference call with journalists, executive producer Sera Gamble discussed the changes from the book series, going beyond just telling Quentin’s story, and a confrontation that is coming up between Quentin and Julia.

Aging Up and Other Book Changes. “I think the first most obvious difference that the fans will notice when they tune in is that we’ve aged the characters up a little bit. Quentin is 17 when you meet him in the book, and he is more like 22 in our television show. They are headed into graduate school. And we did that for a number of creative and practical reasons. But when we realized that this is a choice we might have to make, John McNamara, my writing partner and I, took it very seriously. We didn’t want to change anything from the books that we didn’t have to, so we sat down with Lev Grossman, the author, and hashed out what that change would mean and we all realized we really loved it. So, I think that’s been for the best. And I think throughout the season, we’ll be hitting a lot of the greatest hits of book one. We sometimes come at them a little bit differently. We say we have the same general roadmap but we sometimes take slightly different roads than Lev did in the books.”

Going Beyond Quentin’s Story. “One of the great things about making this as a TV show is we get to deep dive into more of the characters. I think when you read the books, you first and foremost are kind of inside the experience of Quentin Coldwater. But because we spend many, many hours in this world, we get to spend a lot of time in Julia’s point of view and a lot of time in Alice’s point of view.”

Quentin and Julia’s Divergent Paths. “You’re with Quentin and he’s very much our way into Brakebills and we’re deep into his story. But at the same time, we’re seeing a very parallel story unfold for Julia. She’s the one who didn’t get into Brakebills, she has to either give up magic or figure out some way to get it on her own and it turns out to be a much more dangerous and unreliable way of getting magic. It also, I think, really heightens the relationship between Quentin and Julia. [In the pilot it’s made clear] they’re life-long best friends and there’s a lot of layers to that friendship. And it became really clear as we were writing these two stories at the same time that she doesn’t just sort of fade away from his life in that, ‘oh, well. I’ve outgrown my friend,’ kind of way. There’s an active hurt and an active antagonism that grows from the way each of them handled the fact that one of them got into the school and one of them didn’t.”

A Confrontation is Coming. Gamble dropped one spoiler for us, saying that there’s a “confrontation coming between [Quentin and Julia]. I mean, after what you see in the pilot, it’s clear they have some issues to hash out. The confrontation – magic is the subject. The confrontation is totally human. There’s a scene that I really enjoy between the two of them in an early episode in the season that would not be out of place on a show with no magic. And there’s a ton of magic in that episode and they do a ton of magic in that episode. And magic is the reason that they’re having a conversation that they’re having ostensibly, but they’re having the talk that two former best friends need to have because both of them have tripped up and they have damaged the relationship. So, we really try to make sure that the character journeys on the show would make just as much sense if you tuned in a show in a world where magic weren’t real.”

Technology at Brakebills. An interesting tidbit that Gamble shared in terms of worldbuilding is that she was “reading about this kind of crystal grid that someone had set up to kind of minimize the bad stuff that comes off your computer and that turned into a mind meld with our production designer, (Rachel O’Toole) about what they would have to do at Brakebills in order to use conventional electronics. Because essentially, Brakebills University is a place where people have been doing spell upon spell upon spell for many generations. And so, the air is very thick with enchantments and a lot of your “so to say” muggle hardware malfunctions at Brakebills. They don’t use cellphones very much, and they don’t use computers very much because they’re just not reliable in that atmosphere. So, there are little rooms that the students have kind of jury-rigged in order to do things like play video games and use their cellphones and look things up on Google. And it’s one of my favorite sets, though it’s quite tiny. Alice and Quentin sneak into this little supply closet that students have jury-rigged with a bunch of crystals to be able to use computers in there. The visual, it’s really beautiful and it came from this random Google in the writer’s room.”

How Involved is Lev Grossman? “Lev is an active part of the making of the show. He reads the scripts before our bosses do and he sees the cuts before our bosses do. So, we’re very transparent with him about the process and we ask for his advice at times and he sends us really thoughtful interesting good notes.” Gamble also said that he “certainly hasn’t agreed with 100 percent of everything we ever pitched, so he’s always very gracious about it. My perception of it is that it doesn’t come from the feeling that we’re diverging from the books. He really does take the ideas of the show on their own merits and understands that we’re making a version of the story and that we’re making kind of an iteration and adaptation and that it will be the same in some ways and it will by necessity and also because it’s sort of an organic growing thing, it will be different in certain ways. He certainly doesn’t stress out about that to us.”

LUCIFER: The Cast Introduces Amenadiel and Maze

January 22, 2016 By Clarissa 7 Comments

lucifer

While the humans are trying to figure out how to interact with these strange and supernatural beings on LUCIFER, the supernatural beings are trying to get Lucifer himself back to Hell. Specifically, there’s one angel and one demon who will interact the most with Lucifer: Amenadiel (the angel) and Mazikeen (a.k.a. Maze — the demon).

During a visit to the LUCIFER set in Vancouver, we spoke with D.B. Woodside (Amenadiel) and Lesley-Ann Brandt (Maze) about their characters, their respective relationships with Lucifer and why these two supernatural creatures may be inadvertent allies.

The Earthly Plane. Despite the show dealing with matters involving Heaven and Hell, don’t expect to actually see either of those locations any time soon. As Woodside explained, “they really want to focus on earth. And they really don’t want to jump in between worlds — you know, Heaven and Hell. So whatever we hear about something that’s going on in Heaven and Hell, we’ll more or less hear about it as opposed to seeing it.”

Ruling Hell in Lucifer’s Absence. While Lucifer is topside enjoying his vacation from his delivish role, we learn that Amenadiel “has in fact, [as] the good brother, been sent down there to kind oversee [Hell] and so you can just imagine that this is not something that he’s comfortable with, not something that he feels like he should be doing. So I think that there’s a lot of resentment and anger that’s building up quick,” Woodside warned.

Amenadiel’s Powers. When we first meet Amenadiel in the pilot, he’s speaking with Lucifer. And, strangely, time seems to stop around them. As Woodside explained, “one of Amenadiel’s powers, is either to stop time or to slow time down. It’s almost like he lives in between seconds. So life is still going on, but he just can slow time down, anytime that he shows up. And so we’ll see him do that a few times throughout the season. But it’s one of his powers — it’s actually not one of Lucifer’s powers.” Woodside also hinted that we’ll see more cool powers that Amenadiel possesses.

Maze’s Warrior Skills. We didn’t get any hints about Maze’s powers, but Brandt did say that “I get fun blades. I definitely fight, you see the warrior in her and the demon. I guess the demon part of her enjoys torture. You know, that’s her world, that’s what she knows, but she’s having to survive on earth and she’s hoping that her boss is [will soon be] saying ‘okay [it’s] time to go home’.”

Related: Tom Ellis teases Lucifer’s “daddy issues” and his vacation from Hell

Why Did Maze Accompany Lucifer on His Sabbatical from Hell? Lucifer is clearly enjoying his time earth-side, as opposed to ruling in Hell, and he’s not eager to return to the demonic plane any time soon. But Maze is and she’s getting kind of anxious to return home. Why did she accompany him on his trip in the first place then? “I think that it just goes back to the loyalty she has for him — she loves Lucifer, and she has made a vow, and she is committed to him through thick and thin. [Even] if it means being in hell for her — which is not the Hell she wants to be in — then she’ll be here and she’ll stick by him, and that’s a bond that I’m really happy the writers have really honored with these two. Even though, like with relationships, they clash, they [also] come together.”

An Unlikely Alliance. Woodside hinted that “Amenadiel wants Lucifer to return to Hell and Maise wants Lucifer to return to Hell, so they both want the same thing for different reasons. So there might be this unlikely alliance between the two of them even though they don’t particularly like each other at all, you know? But they want the same thing.”

Getting Maze Out of the Bar. While Maze is very connected to Lucifer and his club, LUX, we’ll see her interacting with a wide variety of characters in the show. Brandt says that Maze’s story is “very juicy” and she will be talking to “Amenadiel, Detective Dan, Chloe, [and] Doctor Linda. The writers have been very smart; you know, the trick is how do we incorporate these other-worldly characters in Los Angeles, California, and make it realistic. And that can only — I think — really be done if you get them in the real world, and have scenes that are staged in a park, at a coffee shop, or you know wherever. And it’s funny to see this other-worldly creature in that world.”

What Does Maze Think of Detective Chloe? Brandt hinted that Maze isn’t entirely fond of the human detective who is working with Lucifer. “This is someone I’ve known since the dawn of time, and this is a new woman who’s in his life, and that part of it actually makes her … explore the humanity within Maze. As you know, as women, we are very territorial sometimes, and the character definitely comes from a place of loyalty and protection, and there’s a little bit of, ‘hey, that’s my man!’ But yeah, it’s tricky with [Chloe].”

What’s God Like in LUCIFER? There’s no hints as to whether we’ll actually see God on this show (in addition, Woodside spoke about how the only angel we’ll see on the show in the first run of episodes will be Amenadiel), but what’s the overall impression of God in this universe? Is he a loving God? Is he hands-off? Woodside could only speak from his own impression, but he gave some interesting insight into his character and Lucifer’s when he said “I think Amenadiel would say that he is incredible, a fantastic father, beautiful. Lucifer would say something extremely different. And I think it all comes from point of view. I think that Amenadiel is one of these people [that likes] to follow rules. And they’re perfectly fine with following rules. It’s how they run their life. They feel rooted, they feel connected. They’re not looking to be a leader. They just want to be in their comfort zone and that means paying attention to these rules. And then there are other people that they feel confined and they want to be out there and free to make mistakes. Lucifer is very much that way and Amenadiel is the other. So I think that they view God through their own lens.”

LUCIFER: The Cast Introduces Chloe, Dan and Dr. Linda

January 21, 2016 By Clarissa Leave a Comment

lucifer

While the demons and the angels are engaging in their age-old rivalries and revels, the humans on LUCIFER are just going about their daily lives, none-the-wiser about the supernatural elements around them. But all of their lives will interact soon enough when Chloe investigates a murder outside of Lucifer’s club and he decides to pair up with her to help her solve crimes. That, in turn, introduces Dan — Chloe’s estranged husband — to Lucifer. And Dr. Linda enters the picture when she’s visited by Chloe and Lucifer during the course of their investigation. But she’s not a one-off character, because when Lucifer decides to return to her for some therapy (and a little bit of hanky panky), Linda becomes one of his confidantes.

During a visit to the LUCIFER set in Vancouver, Lauren German (Detective Chloe Dancer), Rachael Harris (Dr. Linda Martin) and Kevin Alejandro (Dan) spoke to journalists about their characters and their complicated personal connections to each other, as well as to Lucifer.

Chloe’s Reaction to Lucifer’s “Powers”. Lucifer isn’t one to mince words and he’ll flat out tell people that he’s immortal or he’ll “compel” them to reveal their secrets. He keeps doing this in front of Chloe and it assists them in their investigations, but he’s perplexed when this compulsion doesn’t work on Chloe herself. What’s Chloe’s reaction to this strange behavior? “I haven’t really clocked it,” German explained. “All I know is that Lucifer has told me ‘why don’t I affect you?’ And I’m just like ‘I don’t know, really, what you’re talking about’. I mean, I see Lucifer do his thing, but it’s almost like watching that show LONG ISLAND MEDIUM. I’ve seen psychics and it sort of looks like that.”

Chloe’s Relationship With Her Mother. When Chloe separates from her husband, she moves into her mother’s Malibu cottage (see a photo tour), along with her daughter. While Chloe used to be an actress for a little while, her mother was in the profession for a long time and reached a respectable level of notoriety. Chloe’s mother won’t be seen in any early episodes, but her presence is definitely felt. “[Chloe] reveals to some guy [in an upcoming episode] ‘it was really annoying. I grew up with paparazzi always around. My mom always took the attention,” German said. “So I think there’s probably some really cool issues to explore there. We just haven’t happened to go there yet.”

Chloe’s on Thin Ice at Her Job. In the pilot episode, we get the sense that Chloe is not very respected by her peers as a result of a case she worked on. German explained that “there’s a case called the Palmetto case and it’s a case where Chloe had a gut instinct that something wasn’t right, something didn’t look right on the paperwork. Everyone said ‘This isn’t your case. Go focus on [something else], not this.’ She went and followed through with it anyway and she saw something that didn’t add up. Basically she saw something that smells dirty. And everyone in the department completely ostracizes her. ‘You ruined this, you screwed up, you made us look bad, you’re causing problems for everyone. Everyone thinks we’re a joke.’ I’m being a little hyperbolic, but in a nutshell that’s what happens. That’s where we pick up in the pilot. I’ve just been almost fired for trying to get the right answers to what I feel happened.” Don’t forget about this important case, LUCIFER fans, because it’s something that continues to unfold as the series does.

The State of Chloe and Dan’s Marriage. As Alejandro explains, Dan is “Chloe’s husband — but they’re currently separated. He’s a real honest, good cop. He’s good at what he does but unfortunately that was the problem in the relationship. It was more about work and sort of forgot about the family a little bit. Now that she’s laid it on him and said ‘Hey, this is what’s happening, we’re getting separated,” he’s struggling really hard to get [their relationship] back.”

Dan and Lucifer. The devil doesn’t think much of Dan when he first meets him. And Alejandro explains that “you’ll absolutely see [more of that tension] going forward. As Dan tries to let Chloe know he’s the right guy. There’s this other man in the picture that he’s a little jealous of and doesn’t quite see what she sees in him….Just the presence of Lucifer threatens everything about Dan and everything he really wants. He wants his family back, he wants to be the alpha male and provide, and have a balanced relationship and Lucifer comes in and throws everything off for him.” While Dan is clearly frustrated by Lucifer, the devil doesn’t necessarily feel the same way about the human. “Lucifer doesn’t really give Dan the time of day. So he’s a complete mystery to my character,” Alejandro said. “Honestly, all Dan sees is a really handsome guy in a suit, a charming guy [and not a supernatural being].” Dan won’t be very immersed in the world of the supernatural, but he “he takes a few really funny trips to Lux. He’s definitely a duck out of water. You can see his awkwardness and how he deals with all these pretty people around him.”

Dan’s Backstory. “I think he just wants to be the best,” Alejandro said. “He’s a little bit egotistical, he wants to be the best at everything. He leads with that bravado and I think he just demands respect. He comes from a lot of challenges that he’s overcome. You get to figure out more about who he is, later in the season. I can’t really reveal [it now], but he’s definitely gone through a lot to get to where he is and he doesn’t want to do anything to destroy his reputation.

What Does Linda Think of Lucifer? Lucifer is attending therapy because he’s feeling resentful about his eternal job (courtesy of dear old dad) but what does Linda think of him, particularly since he’s brutally honest with her? Harris said that “it’s an intriguing case where Linda believes he’s delusional. He says he’s the devil. He’s completely honest with her, but she’s like ‘Wow, he’s really speaking in archetypes.’ So I think he has serious father-son issues and, in fact, he does. It’s like the epitome of father-son issues.” And how is their personal relationship complicating their professional one? “She’s faced with her own feelings and her own ethics as to what she’s doing because [she’s thinking] ‘I’m not crazy. I’m not a crazy person. I’m an ethical doctor that knows exactly [what I should be doing but] I don’t know why I can’t stop with him. He’s like a drug. But I also know I’m intrigued by his story, and I want to help him….I think the great conflict in the whole show is he’s trying to figure out who he is, and my role in the show is to help him and, at the same time, I’m finding out my own identity.”

Is Linda Stuck in Her Office? No, according to Harris, who said that her character will branch out a bit more. “Yes, in the beginning, I am focusing on helping him. And I’m also interested in getting it on with him. Which I like. It’s fun. But then there are opportunities. I do get outside of the office. So there’s other places it’s gonna go, which is really fun.”

Future Guest Stars. There’s a few well-known guest stars coming up on LUCIFER, including Jim Rash (COMMUNITY) and Tom Sizemore.

Don’t miss the series premiere of LUCIFER on Monday, January 25 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.

ARROW Season 4 Roundtable: Of Super Villains, Super Dramas and Superheroes

January 20, 2016 By Luciana Mangas Leave a Comment

arrow

After a very long six-week hiatus, ARROW returns tonight on The CW. I know I am not the only one who is on the edge of my seat, dying to know what happened to Felicity and what the consequences of that tragic ending on the winter finale are going to be. However, we did have six weeks to get over the shock of our dear IT queen getting shot and talk about it endlessly, so I imagine you ARROW fans had more than enough time to come up with a million different theories, right?

Well, so did we. Just like we did for FLASH, a few colleagues and fellow fans of the Green Arrow have sat down to discuss the main plot points of season 4 so far – and let’s be honest, there is a lot to discuss. So sit back, relax and take a look at what we came up with.

arrow

DAMIEN DAHRK

LUCIANA MANGAS: I know he is controversial and he is ruthless, but Damien Dahrk is probably my favorite villain to date. Mostly due to Neal McDonough’s incredible performance, this version of the iconic super bad is basically evil reincarnated, but he is also charming and so funny. McDonough plays this amazingly scary character with such lightness and grace that – even though I hate his guts and want him to die a painful death when the time for that finally comes, especially after what he did to Felicity – I can’t help but sit up straighter and pay attention and be completely delighted to see the magic he brings to my screen every week. I have no idea where they are going with this character, now that Oliver is hell bent on getting justice for Felicity, but I can’t wait to see what happens next and what his master plan actually is.

MELISSA SMITH: I first remember Dahrk (and H.I.V.E) from TEEN TITANS.  He was a 20-years-old and looked like a teenager.  He was never a big character, so the fact that Dahrk is so different on ARROW does not bother me in its departure from the graphic novel canon.  Neil McDonough is such a good actor that he makes the character his own, leaving the Titans version in the dust. That being said, introducing a “magical” character into the ARROW-verse is a tough issue to resolve.  Unlike many of his contemporaries like Superman and The Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow has no superpowers.  He’s just a guy who can fight and design arrows that do cool things. In fact, none of TEAM ARROW (that we know of) has superpowers.  Having them fight a magical immortal gives them an almost-impossible challenge.  At least R’as al Ghul fought hand-to-hand.  That, you can defeat (theoretically). It will be interesting to see how they end up defeating Dahrk.  I have a theory as to how I’d like to see that happen.  Read below under “Expectations.”

SHANA LIEBERMAN: Let me preface this by saying I think Neal McDonough was the perfect choice to play this Big Bad. He’s a great choice to play any villain, really: Loved him as slimy Sean Cahill on SUITS, loved him when he showed up as one of the many people after Scully’s Platonic Alieum Miracle Baby on THE X-FILES… But I’ve been offended by this character beyond just the normal “love to hate” super-evil reaction, thanks to some decisions by the creative team at ARROW that I just can’t support. At this point, regardless of how great McDonough is, I just want to forget Damien Darhk.

I feel like I could write an epistle on this one, but in an effort to keep this roundtable from turning into my own personal soapbox, I’ll just say this: There was no need to go there with the gas chambers in ARROW’s winter finale. Making matters worse, they had Felicity, a Jewish character, in that chamber — and after making a big deal about it being Chanukah (yes, in the real world, it was Chanukah then, too) earlier in the episode. There was also no need for the gray prison uniform that was far too close to what actual nazi gas chamber victims would have worn. Respecting the memory of those killed during Holocaust is very important to me — not just as a Jew but as someone who has studied that dark period in history extensively, even taking it as my personal responsibility to retell on one of the survivors’ stories — so, as a general rule, I like it kept out of fiction. There are very rare cases where I can accept its use as a storytelling device, but this wasn’t one of them.

If the only way to take your villain in a 100% fictional world up a notch is to have him worship Hitler, you’re doing it wrong. Sorry, ARROW. I’m not impressed.

MEREDITH ZYLBERBERG: Damien Dahrk is the villain we’ve been waiting for, and Neal McDonough was the absolute perfect casting choice. After last year’s villain fell fairly flat in terms of scariness (which is really kinda the number one thing you look for in a villain, wouldn’t you say?) the show really needed to come back strong in that regard. Thankfully, they delivered in spades. While not necessarily the most physically imposing villain, Dahrk’s creepiness factor more than makes up for it. The addition of the supernatural makes the stakes even higher  – the viewer legitimately questions whether, and ultimately how, Oliver can beat him.

In addition to Dahrk’s villainy-nous and creepiness, there is the added ambiguity of his purpose. What does he want? What is his goal? Why does he have a super-freaky cornfield underground? What is he going to do with it? Throw in the recently-revealed family dynamic, and it leaves us with a lot of (good) questions about Damien Dahrk. The mystery surrounding him is a good one, it’s one we want answers to. I’m invested in Dahrk and this storyline in a way I haven’t really been with a villain since Slade. And maybe even more so. Malcolm Merlyn and Ra’s Al Ghul didn’t really pass muster as scary villains who actually had the potential to do harm. Slade did, and now Dahrk does. So bravo, ARROW. This season’s Big Bad is big and bad and exciting. Definitely one of the most successful storylines of the season so far.

SUPERGIRL at TCA: Producers Talk Laura Vandervoort and Preview What’s Ahead

January 18, 2016 By Tina Charles Leave a Comment

supergirl

For fans of SUPERGIRL, one of the biggest announcements to come out of last week’s Television Critics Association’s Winter Press Tour, had to do with a key casting move.

“We’re so proud and excited to welcome in the role of Indigo, Laura Vandervoort,” said executive producer Ali Adler during a special press conference on the DEO set of SUPERGIRL. “We’re just so excited to have her here on these stages.”

Vandervoort, of course, played Supergirl on the CW’s SMALLVILLE. On the CBS series, she’ll recur as Indigo, who’s described as a living strong-willed supercomputer that was sentenced to Fort Rozz after turning against Krypton. Hopefully that means she’ll end up clashing with Kara’s alter ego in a big and badass way.

What would be even better is if there were a way to get Melissa Benoist and Helen Slater to share a scene with Vandervoort. Slater may be playing Kara’s adoptive mother, Eliza Danvers, but all three of these actresses are either present or past Supergirls. There’s a good chance this will happen. According to Variety, the episode will feature “three generations of Supergirl.”

Look for Indigo to make her presence known in episode 15 while another familiar name pops up for the first time the week before Vandervoort guest stars.

“The villain is Master Jailer, who’s another DC Comics mainstay who we’re putting a twist on,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg announced. “Lexi [Alexander, the episode’s director] and John Medlen, who’s our stunt supervisor — they designed one of the coolest fights we’ve ever done on the show. One word: chains.”

Bringing Master Jailer to live-action life is Jeff Branson. In the daytime world, Branson starred on ALL MY CHILDREN, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS and GUIDING LIGHT, where he won an Emmy for playing Shayne Lewis. More recently, he appeared on the CW’s SUPERNATURAL. He was a member of the evil Styne family, who tried to make life difficult for the Winchester brothers since they were in possession of the powerful Book of the Damned.

Another Kreisberg reveal involves a story he’s been waiting to tackle. “One of my favorite comic books is FOR THE MAN WHO HAS EVERYTHING, by Alan Moore. So episode 13 is actually “For the Girl Who Has Everything,” he explained. “Kara wakes up and she’s back on Krypton and has no idea how or why she got there. And it’s one of the things I’m the most excited about having done, because it seemed like such a pipe dream.”

There’s also something coming up for J’onn J’onnz aka Martian Manhunter aka the guy everybody other than Kara and Alex thinks is Hank Henshaw. “We’re actually going to see how J’onn became Hank in an upcoming episode,” teased Kreisberg.

Tonight’s Supergirl dives deep into Winn’s backstory, thanks to the emergence of his father, the supervillain known as Toyman. “‘Childish Things,’ which features Winslow Schott, Sr., played by Henry Czerny, who does the Toyman, is Jeremy’s hour,” raved Kreisberg. “He is so good in this episode and so is the whole cast.” Watch sneak peeks from this week’s episode.

“He’s very much the hero of that story too,” added Adler. “And Jamie Babbit did a beautiful job directing for us.”

SUPERGIRL airs Mondays at 8/7c on CBS.

Ever get one of those spam emails in which the Nigerian prince offers you money?  Your inclination is to delete it, right?  Does deleting the email guarantee your safety from worms and viruses?

And what if you see that scary word “daemon” pop up on your computer?  Looks like the guys from SUPERNATURAL should be headed your way.

Could a daemon be a motive for murder?  Tonight on NCIS: LOS ANGELES, Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Sam (LL Cool J) go undercover to scrutinize a possible deadly situation at a tech company.

Posing as “angels” (venture capitalists with a lot of money to invest), the partners actually are there to investigate the murder of a tech entrepreneur who became a venture capitalist before his demise.

The suspicion is that the deceased developed a computer program that allowed data collection from certain sites without detection.

In other words, are social media accounts as friendly as you think?  Are there background programs running on your computer’s operating system that can invade your privacy?   Do you really have control over what it can or cannot do with your information?

After all, the daemon is named after a supernatural being that works in the background, sometimes good, sometimes bad, and sometimes just sorting information, depending upon the philosophy.  Check out Plato and Socrates for more.

Fun moments…Kensi (Daniela Ruah) calculating the origin of a shooting by doing complex math as Marty (Eric Christian Olsen) watches, both impressed and a bit dumbfounded.

Also funny is O’Donnell’s parody of a rich, childlike (or childish, depending upon your view of such things) techie who scoots about on his hoverboard with very little regard for those in his wake.

After tonight, will you look at your smartphone the same way ever again?

NCIS: LOS ANGELES also stars Linda Hunt, Barrett Foa, Renée Felice Smith and Miguel Ferrer.   Guest starring in tonight’s episode, “Angels & Daemons” are Kaj-Erik Eriksen, Galadriel Stineman, Abhi Sinha, Dove Meir, Lance Irwin, Eddie Perino, Scott Michael Morgan and Sam Hale.

“Angels & Daemons” was written by Andrew Bartels and directed by James Hanlon.

NCIS: LOS ANGELES airs ton January 18 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

In addition to the pick-ups and renewals Fox announced at its TCA presentation today — along with the release of a new X-FILES promo — the network has also released a trailer for its new series HOUDINI & DOYLE.

The series, which is apparently inspired by true events, “follows two great men of the 20th Century – Harry Houdini (Michael Weston), master magician, escape artist and paranormal debunker; and Arthur Conan Doyle (Stephen Mangan), prolific writer, creator of “Sherlock Holmes” and paranormal aficionado. They grudgingly join forces with New Scotland Yard to investigate unsolved and inexplicable and possibly supernatural crimes, alongside the first female Constable of the London Metropolitan Police Force, Adelaide Stratton (Rebecca Liddiard).”

HOUDINI & DOYLE is set to premiere in the spring of 2016.
