REIGN Post-mortem: Stars Adelaide Kane and Torrance Coombs and EPs Laurie McCarthy and Brad Silberling Preview the Season 1 Finale

May 2, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

72014

For its first season finale, REIGN is taking no prisoners. It will meet all of its mysteries and conflicts head on and try to answer as many as it can before leaving fans for summer hiatus. As seen in this week’s episode “Higher Ground,” Mary (Adelaide Kane) is no longer a young, tentative queen. She is a ferocious leader and she will stop at nothing to protect her country — including sanctioning the kidnapping of Queen Catherine (Megan Follows) in order to extort a ransom to help Mary’s mother in Scotland and the beheading of Catherine’s overbearing cousin. This is the new Mary, the one who no longer begs for assistance, but rather one who will take what she needs no matter what the price.

Also showing off a new inner strength is Francis (Toby Regbo). He may be the Dauphin of France, but he showed he was willing to set aside his royal cloaks and get in the trenches with his men, risking his own life to secure the position they need to turn the war and bring peace back to France.

With Mary and Francis demonstrating the lengths each will go to for their countries, it will be interesting to find out how easily they can be together as a married couple when neither will want to yield anymore.

In a recent press conference, stars Adelaide Kane and Torrance Coombs, as well as executive producers Laurie McCarthy and Brad Silberling talked about what is next for the royals, their court and their friends as the struggle between French and Scottish interests continues.

Mary’s Darkside
ADELAIDE: I think that began to happen a long time ago. I think it’s been a slow and gradual sort of shift for her. I don’t think anything like that ever happens all at once and all of a sudden. It’s not a switch and you’re ready to sacrifice lives. I think this has been coming for awhile. . . I think she’s been realizing that she needs to make difficult decisions. One life versus dozens versus political upheaval. It is a difficult decision, but a necessary evil. So she’s been slowly coming to terms with being able to live with herself making those choices. It just remains to be seen how far that ends up going, and how far she strays from the path of the noble minded queen that she has always been. It’s whether she ends up like Catherine.
LAURIE: It comes at a moment in her life where men have bowed to her and fought for her and died for her. Referring to the whorehouse massacre, where there were a bunch of Scots who went off and did her bidding — and Catherine warned her in that moment as well that this was going to keep happening. So [Mary] is embracing her power. She is also really cognizant of the cost of that power. This episode (episode 20) was designed to put a finer point on that.
BRAD: There’s beautiful degree of written self-awareness too. There’s great moments that [Adalaide] gets to play where now that [Mary’s] really examining that cost, where she is in that transition, and where she is in her marriage.

Francis’ Return
LAURIE: Francis will return to the castle in very short order, and Leith (Jonathan Keltz) as well.

Effects of Timejump
LAURIE: We moved time a little more quickly towards the end of the season, partly because we wanted to do the Battle of Calais, and we’re faced with certain realities of time on our show. There’s no cellphones; there’s no high-speed train. So time needed to move by quickly for Francis to go to war and win the war, and it happened to service the Lola-Francis-Mary storyline with accelerating the pregnancy as well. Things get more complicated. [Francis] is still unaware that Lola is carrying his child. And with Greer and Leith, when they said goodbye, they really thought they were never going to see each other again. Again, we honor the realities of this time because you cannot change your fate by getting a scholarship and going to college and starting a business; but you can change your fate if you find a noble that can bestow riches upon you or raise your station — or marry the right person. But even then you really need a royal to give you land. The kingdom owned everything. So it was a great opportunity to connect two characters who really had been in each other’s periphery, but never actually met. It will change everything when Leith comes back ’cause he’s a different person. He has different opportunities and different ambitions, as we’ll come to find out as well.
BRAD: He was told to live for the woman back at home. That’s an incredible moment and that will come back.

Mary & Francis
ADELAIDE: I think Mary has kept herself very busy while Francis has been away at war. We’ve established that he is a pretty efficient warrior and he’s a smart man. In the larger scheme of things, I think she does believe he will come home safe-and-sound, but there’s always that concern that life goes on and she has to take care of things at the castle and take care of things for Scotland and pray her letters get to him and his letters back to her will get to her.
LAURIE: The conflicts that happen between Mary and Francis, they happen because [she] is queen of another country and he is king of his country. So it creates this incredible conflict. But who better to be married to and understand exactly what you’re going through.
ADELAIDE: I think if you spend that much time apart, there’s going to be a disconnect when they come back together and then of course with Lola and the baby, and with [Mary] still remaining childless, she’s probably had more time to focus on the fact that she can’t have children. . . But the reunion between Mary and Francis is going to be somewhat very sweet because they love each other and because he’s been away at war. But it doesn’t mean that they don’t still have conflicting patriot duties — that’s never going to change. . . [She’s] also been up to some shady dealings while he’s been away. Even though they love each other so much, they cannot share everything. Not tell each other everything. It’s just no doable. I mean, he ran off with her army.
LAURIE: There was a moment, that we unfortunately cut, when the mercenary tells [Mary]: “I wonder if your husband will recognize you.”
ADELAIDE: She’s changed a lot because Francis is not there to help her. Not that he’s done a particularly good job of doing that this season. He tries and fails miserable, every single time.
BRAD: He does tell [her] that he tries though.

Bash & Kenna
TORRANCE: (Laughs) We have some fun.
BRAD: It’s actually very sweet to watch.

Bash & Mary
LAURIE: They have a bond that is never going to go away. We write to that bond and we honor it, but they are moving in different directions.
TORRANCE: There is those people in your life that you just never really get over, but you do move on. . . There’s other problems going on and Bash (Torrance Coombs) and Kenna (Caitlin Stasey) are working things out.
ADELAIDE: They have bigger and scarier things to take care of.

The Brothers
LAURIE: Another key relationship is the love between brothers. We want to honor that as well.
TORRANCE: To have Bash pursue Mary relentlessly at this point when she has chosen Francis, I think that does a disservice to the relationship between the brothers. It really only became a reality when the legitimization thing happened and it was to save his life. That’s when it sort of became okay to pursue that.
LAURIE: The are things in the woods that Bash has to handle first.

The Finale
LAURIE: Episode 20 (“Higher Ground”) is a build up to — talking about the relationships first — you have seen Francis and Mary almost switch positions from where they were at the beginning of the year where she was a little bit more naive and more of a romantic, and he was more of a realist. I think he’s found his heart and he’s found who he wants to be as king and that will come to a test and a very dramatic conclusion at the end of the season. We’ve talked about what may be happening in the woods and who’s demanding sacrifices and to what end, and those questions will be answered by the end of the season. . . and Henry’s madness.
BRAD: As with everything in this show, there’s nobody who is straight up evil — other than Tomas in episode 4 — but when people are doing bad things, there’s usually a reason for it.
LAURIE: Even with Lola (Anna Popplewell) and Julien (Giancomo Giannotti), you’ll learn more about who he is. When you ask a liar to not lie to you any more, what else are they going to say?
BRAD: Love changes people, and that love between those two characters is transformational for them in a very interesting way.
LAURIE: We’ll see some triangles expand to quadrangles, and some repositioning of people in surprising ways.

Cliffhanger
LAURIE: (Laughs) There’s a bit of a cliffhanger. But I feel like it’s an incredibly satisfying episode.
ADELAIDE: A lot of things come to a head, which is nice.

With two more episodes before the end of the season and so many big storylines to bring to a close — including the birth of Lola’s baby, the monster in the woods, and Henry’s insanity — REIGN wilyl undoubtedly be a non-stop thrill-ride from this point forward and is not to missed. Look for new episodes on May 8th and 15th at 9:00 p.m. on the CW.

reign higher ground

In this week’s new episode of REIGN, intrigue abounds inside the castle walls while a ferocious war is fought in Calais. When last seen, Francis (Toby Regbo) was accompanying Mary’s uncle to Calais in order to fortify the French troops against the English, and Mary (Adalaide Kane) vowed to find another way to aid her mother who was in desperate need of either troops or funds in order to secure her position in Scotland.

Then with Mary’s maids, Greer (Celina Sinden) had just accepted Lord Castleroy’s (Michael Therriault) marriage proposal, Lola (Anna Popplewell) had married Lord Julien (Giacomo Giannotti), and Kenna (Caitlin Stasey) and Bash (Torrance Coombs) had consummated their arranged marriage.

As for Queen Catherine (Megan Follows), she was busily trying to keep the kingdom from find out that King Henry (Alan VanSprang) had gone mad, while Francis worked to ensure that the French troops were not slaughtered fighting a larger army. [Read more…]

THE 100 Scoop: Stars Bob Morley, Ricky Whittle and EP Jason Rothenberg Talk What’s Upcoming With the Grounders and Project Exodus

May 1, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

72348

This week’s episode “Contents Under Pressure” was about saving Finn’s (Thomas McDonell) life, discovering the secrets of the Grounder, and the Ark’s plans to evacuate back to Earth — and none of these came without a price.

To save Finn’s life, Bellamy (Bob Morley) and Clarke (Eliza Taylor) had to embrace their darker natures sanctioning the torture of the Grounder (Ricky Whittle) — making them wonder what else they may have to comprise to survive in this deadly new world.

Also the Grounder was not about to give up himself or even his people for these aliens who just arrived — that is until Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) put her life on the line and then he was willing to do anything to save her, even giving up a secret he would normally die to protect.

Then on the Ark, all secrets were supposed to be revealed, but even Jaha (Isaiah Washington) and Kane (Henry Ian Cusick) could not face the survivors with the truth that only 700 lives would be saved in the last remaining drop ships to go to Earth, so they agreed to let Diana Sydney (Kate Vernon), a former Chancellor, have a seat back at the Council table.

In a recent press interview, stars Bob Morley, Ricky Whittle and executive producer Jason Rothenberg shared what is upcoming for the remaining 92 surviving kids on Earth, and those stuck up on the Ark, as well as what kind of threat the Grounders really pose to them all. [Read more…]

THE 100 Preview: “Contents Under Pressure” (Raven, Groctavia and Repercussions Oh My!)

April 30, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

the 100 Contents Under Pressure

In this week’s new episode of the CW series THE 100, it is all about dealing with the repercussions of the hard choices made by the kids on Earth and the adults on the Ark; as both groups have risked or taken lives and the fall-out from that sends ripple-effects throughout both worlds.

When we last saw the kids on Earth, Bellamy (Bob Morley), Clarke (Eliza Taylor), Jasper (Devon Bostick) and Finn (Thomas McDonell) had gone to rescue Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos), who was being held chained up by a Grounder. But in the process, Finn took a knife to the chest and his odds of making it are slim at best without the resources on the Ark.

Then on the Ark, Chancellors Jaha (Isaiah Washington), Kane (Henry Ian Cusick) and Abby (Paige Turco) are still recovering from the deaths of the 320 who volunteered in order to extend the oxygen supply — for the rocket flares sent up from Earth were seen too late.

Neither place is the most desirable locale to be in right now. One offers poisonous fog and an hostile indigenous population; the other offers a slow death by oxygen depravation and the worry than any small infraction could result in being floated.

So what does this week’s episode “Contents Under Pressure” have to offer? First, there’s Raven (Lindsey Morgan). Now safely on Earth and reunited with her love, Finn, Raven will do everything in her power to save his life. So repairing that blast radio that Bellamy tried to destroy is top of her list. REVOLUTION Preview: “$#!& Happens” in the Aftermath of [Spoiler Alert’s] Death!

April 30, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

$#!& Happens revolution

In a year of fake-out deaths: first Aaron (Zak Orth), then Monroe (David Lyons), it is hard to still believe that our heroes can actually die on REVOLUTION. But evidenced by the deaths of Ben (Tim Guinee), Maggie (Anna Lise Phillips), Danny (Graham Rogers), and Nora (Daniella Alonso) in the first season, people do die.

So in “Austin City Limits,” when Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) was forced to kill Jason (JD Pardo), we felt like our heart had been ripped out. Jason was one of the heroes. He was supposed to be untouchable. He had survived and overcome so much that it seemed doubly cruel that it was his turn to be sacrificed.

Last season may have been about dismantling Monroe’s Republic and turning the power back on; but this season has been all about the Patriots and their devastating plans to conquer the entire country. Their plans have been in place for nearly two decades. The Patriots have been plotting, scheming and strategizing ever since the day the power went out. Getting the power back on (albeit briefly) was just a means to an end for them. They needed the resources to devastate Monroe’s army and anyone else’s that stood in their way in one swoop. Then they sent in their brain-washed soldiers to clean up the remaining areas of resistance.

After seeing how effectively their brain-washing technique worked on Jason and the other cadets, it is terrifying to imagine how many more of such mindless soldiers are out there under the Patriots control and ready to do their bidding. They are the sleeper agents from hell; virtually unstoppable because you cannot see them coming. [Read more…]

ARROW Preview: A War Is Brewing in “City of Blood”

April 30, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

arrow city of blood

It was inevitable that someone close to Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) would eventually die. All heroes paint a bulls-eye on their loved ones the second they take on the responsibility of being a champion. In Oliver’s case, his fate was predetermined by the events on that blasted island. Meeting Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett) was both the making of Oliver and perhaps the undoing of Oliver – and all because of a girl. Shado (Celina Jade) was blessed to have been loved by two very good men; but her death caused shockwaves that are still being felt today. Oliver may never fully escape his decision to choose Sara over Shado when Ivo (Dylan Neal) held a gun to their heads and told Oliver to choose. Slade is certainly never going to forgive Oliver, and under the influence of the Mirakuru serum, Slade’s mind is warped beyond the limits of humanity. Slade is now just a monster seething with rage and vengeance. Unfortunately, it is not totally unlike how Oliver was when he first return to Starling City – that all consuming desire for revenge at any price.

But the price of Slade’s unrelenting pursuit to destroy Oliver took a deadly toll in last week’s episode “Seeing Red.” It claimed the life of Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson). When placed in the same position of being forced to choose between two people he cared about Oliver, simply could not choose this time. He was bereft with anger, agony and helplessness. That left it up to Moira – being a mother who never ever hesitated to do whatever it took to protect her children, she willingly stepped forward and declared herself to be the one willing to die so that her children may be spared. As Slade swung his sword and sliced right through Moira, we watched in utter horror. Slade may have declared it an honorable death, but there was nothing honorable in watching a woman being cut in half before her children’s eyes just because a madman wanted to play a game. ORPHAN BLACK Redux: Sarah Got A Gun, Felix Got Chapped, and Kira Got Her Picture Taken!

April 26, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

OrphanBlack_Pair_2_FN

Season 2 of ORPHAN BLACK was off to a rip-roaring start as Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany) frantically searched for her missing daughter Kira (Skyler Wexler) – unfortunately, with both the Neolutionists and the Prolethians closing in. So it was a race against the clock for Sarah to get a gun and take down her sister pro-clone Rachel at the Dyad Institute in order to rescue Kira.

It took was some fancy clone shenanigans to get Sarah into Dyad; namely Alison had to procure a gun and get it to Sarah without the nosy cops and their monitors from finding out. Then Sarah infiltrated Dyad posing as Cosima into order to slip past Dr. Leekie (Matt Frewer) and security; and, fortunately, Rachel’s insistence on having Paul (Dylan Bruce) nearby also worked to Sarah’s advantage once things got a bit dicey.

But the terrifying surprise of it all was Rachel never had Kira; someone else had taken her. So all of Sarah’s efforts and planning to confront Rachel were for nothing. The moment Sarah realized that she did not know who had her daughter or where to begin searching for Kira was when we saw her strength disintegrate inside her. It was the helplessness that any parent would feel not knowing where their child was – and that moment of truth was devastating. [Read more…]

BAD TEACHER Review: A Hilarious New Comedy Starring Ari Graynor and Ryan Hansen

April 24, 2014 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

bad teacher cbs

With so many stellar comedy series on television right now, it is hard to stand out in the crowd. So CBS was smart to cast Ari Graynor and Ryan Hansen as its comedic leads for its new series BAD TEACHER.

Taken from the concept of the movie that starred Cameron Diaz, BAD TEACHER looks at the life of a rich socialite, Meredith Davis (Ari Graynor), as it disintegrates around her upon her divorce. Destitute and desperate for money, as well as the opportunity to meet eligible young, wealthy men, Meredith talks her way into a teaching job.

Confident that her luck must be changing, Meredith just knows that the right man with the right bank account will fall right into her lap if she just makes herself available and puts herself in his path. The “right place, right time” strategy is fairly fool-proof. Yet, interestingly, Meredith discovers that there is more to life than marrying a rich man.

Inspired by the kids around her, she finds herself a champion of the school under-dogs. Unable to just stand by and abide the bullying prevalent in the school, Meredith is soon mentoring in the art of “fake it ‘til you make it” and teaching how confidence is all you need to get exactly what you want out of life.

It is a plucky, poignant tale of a young woman inspired to be more than she ever dreamed she could be; and how that courage and can-do attitude inspires the kids to do the same. [Read more…]
