We Preview Syfy’s Magical Mini-Series NEVERLAND

December 1, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

Everyone has grown up hearing the tale of “Peter Pan” – the story of a boy who-could-never-grow-old who invited a trio of children to join him in an extraordinary journey with pirates, Indians, a notorious Captain Hook, a blood-thirsty crocodile, and a fairy named Tinkerbell.  Inviting viewers to venture back into this warm-hearted world, Syfy’s mini-series NEVERLAND is a prequel telling the story of how Peter became the boy-who-could-fly and the misadventures he first encountered in the magical land of Neverland.

In this tale, in the beginning, Peter (Charlie Rowe) is still just a boy roaming the streets of London with his fellow comrades under the watchful eye of his mentor Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans).  But when a mysterious glowing orb is found, they are transported to the far corners of the universe to a world where amazing things are possible.  Similarly caught by the power of the orb, also found in this new world are a tribe of Indians and crew of pirates who are at odds on who should control the fairy magic hidden within the forest.

Being the enterprising young men that they are, Peter and his mates befriend the Indians, while Jimmy Hook suffers a different fate, subjected to the seductive temptations of Captain Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel). With so many distractions and delicacies within reach is it any wonder that Jimmy Hook finds himself aligned with the pirates, while Peter and his crew discover that their loyalties lie with their newfound family in this remote corner of the universe? Sunday Bloody Sunday! Has the Depiction of Violence Towards Children in Television Crossed the Line?

November 30, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 1 Comment

It is kind of the dirty little secret of television that it is okay to show images that would be normally repugnant and unacceptable otherwise — simply because it is not real.  Photos and images that would normally be banned as too graphic are allowed under the guise that it is okay because they are not showing something that actually occurred.

But as some of this year’s television shows have stretched the boundaries of what we will tolerate, a question has arisen as to: where do we draw the line? Television shows like THE KILLING, AMERICAN HORROR STORY and THE WALKING DEAD are challenging our sense of morality and ethics of what should be allowed to be shown in the television format.  [Read more…]

THE CLOSER Scoop: Kyra Sedgwick and EP James Duff Teases Tonight’s Return, Talks Moles and Previews MAJOR CRIMES

November 28, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

In the world of Brenda Leigh Johnson in THE CLOSER, life is simple:  there is a crime and someone is going to pay.  Intriguingly, making the punishment fit the crime has become an underlying theme.  For is it enough to put away the bad guy if the legal system cannot guarantee that he will never see the light of day again?

In this final season, the unorthodox tactics employed by the Major Crimes Division to get the confessions they need to put away criminals has been called into question, especially if they cannot use the confession to obtain justice. After the state court threw out the case against Brenda in the wrongful death suit of a murderer and the big reveal that the same case was now going to be brought in federal court, the issue of a department “mole” has taken on new meaning and ramifications.

In a recent conference call with press, Kyra Sedgwick and creator/executive producer James Duff shared their candid thoughts on the journey of Brenda Leigh Johnson and what lies ahead. [Read more…]

November 27, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

In the grifter-infused world of LEVERAGE, short-cons, long-cons, and con artists of all shapes and sizes are the norm.  It is always a “shell game” and our heroes are the best of the best in creating an illusion to deceive the wicked criminals they intend to fleece.  It is a modern-tale of “Robin Hood,” and in a recent press conference call Timothy Hutton and Beth Riesgraf (who play Nate Ford and Parker on the show) took a few moments to about their mischievous characters and what’s next in the upcoming episodes of LEVERAGE. 10 TV Shows To Be Thankful For

November 24, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 7 Comments

While Thanksgiving is an American holiday and perhaps not celebrated globally, this seemed like an opportune time to give a warm shout-out to 10 television shows for which I am thankful this year.

One caveat, with the Year End 2011 Top 10 lists about to be unleashed from every corner of the TV blog-o-sphere which will trumpet and laud TV shows that are proclaimed to be the best-of-the-best, these are just a some of shows that consistently bring a smile to my face and make me glad that they created these glorious fictional worlds for us to enjoy. We Preview CASTLE’s ‘Kill Shot’: A Case With Echoes of the Past

November 21, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt Leave a Comment

In Monday night’s tense episode, Castle and Beckett confront a killer in a case that hits a bit close to home.  A sniper is shooting victims seemingly at random and they have to race against the clock to figure out what the pattern is: does he pre-selects his victims or is all about the locations and mere convenience?

But the real issue is not about the killer, it is about whether Detective Kate Beckett will completely unravel as memories of her own shooting begin to surface. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an insidious psychological reaction to extreme physical and mental trauma that can surface unexpectedly. [Read more…]

Why Is FRINGE Failing on Friday Nights?

November 18, 2011 By Tiffany Vogt 7 Comments

When it was first announced that FRINGE would be moving from Thursday nights to Friday nights, everyone was relieved. It was believed that if there was a night specially designed and protective of sci-fi shows, it was Fridays. After all that was the night that Fox’s THE X-FILES flourished for many years (before moving to Sundays) and it used to be the sci-fi “go to” night for Syfy channel as well, back in the hey-days of STARGATE: SG-1, STARGATE: ATLANTIS, EUREKA and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

But, in the past few years, an interesting trend developed. Fridays were no longer deemed “sci-fi” Fridays. It was not the sanctuary and safe haven for sci-fi shows. (All puns intended since Syfy still airs both SANCTUARY and HAVEN on Friday nights.) So with the abandonment of Syfy, which took its hardcore sci-fi shows to Monday and Tuesday nights (in order to secure more lucrative advertising and which ultimately killed off such sci-fi staples like STARGATE: UNIVERSE and CAPRICA), very few other broadcast networks wanted to venture into the forbidden territory of Friday nights – known for the past couple of decades as the Death Slot. It has been few and far between that TV shows could succeed on Friday nights. CBS’ GHOST WHISPERER managed to eek out a few years, and BLUE BLOODS also seems to be flourishing on Fridays – but both those series had big-name stars drawing the crowds. Plus, neither show is arguably considered sci-fi. [Read more…]

Ask the Addict: Spoilers for CASTLE, HOMELAND, DEXTER, THE CLOSER, HAVEN & More!

November 17, 2011 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

With Monday’s episode of CASTLE entitled “Kill Shot,” I’m only slightly concerned that one of my favorite members of the NYPD will find themselves on the wrong end of a sniper’s sight. Any chance I might trouble you to alleviate my worries? — Kelly
The TV Addict: Considering we would hate to be the one to spoil the fun, not to mention the intense pulse-pounding excitement that you’ll undoubtedly experience while watching a city in chaos when a sniper goes on a terrifying killing spree, there is absolutely zero chance that we will alleviate your fear! That said, what we will only be too happy to do is fill you in on a little secret: The insanity surrounding Monday’s fantastic episode of CASTLE won’t be for naught, particularly for those of you who have been patiently waiting for a certain member of the NYPD to see the light.

Anything you can tease for this CASTLE crazed fan with regards to Monday’s episode? — Madison
The TV Addict: While Beckett’s increased moments of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) will most definitely take center stage in an episode that has “For Your Emmy Consideration” written all over it in terms of Stana Katic’s stellar performance, fans of both Alexis (Molly Quinn) and Esposito (Jon Huertas) will be pleased to discover that the talented twosome play an integral role in the hunt for the killer.

Love me some Mark Pellegrino. Any chance we’ll be seeing more of him on THE CLOSER? — Alison
The TV Addict: According to CLOSER producer James Duff, who we recently had the pleasure of interviewing, the in-demand actor will be appearing as the deliciously scene-stealing Gavin in at least two of the upcoming episodes starting November 28th. What’s more, you’re not the only one who loves them some Pellegrino, as Duff let it slip that they are feverishly working to find the time between the actor’s 423 (approx.) other projects to bring him back next summer as well!
