Thursday Night TV Thoughts
As hard as I tried, as dedicated — sorry addicted as I am, I simply didn’t have the strength and stamina to get through an entire night of Thursday television. Like the marathoner who collapses right before the finish line, I had to summon every last inch of strength to get through the night and complete over six hours of television watching. I started off with THE OC (loved it), headed into UGLY BETTY (Sophia better be fired), moved onto GREY’S ANATOMY (Give T.R. Knight an Emmy), followed with THE OFFICE (I love Dwight), headed on to SCRUBS (Carla lost it, WOW) and finished off the knight with 30 ROCK (Where’s my Meat Machine™?). SMALLVILLE and Tori Spelling, I tried my best — but rest assured, you’re stored on my PVR and will be watched this weekend.
To conserve some energy and build up strength for next Thursday, the following our my Cole’s/Cliff’s notes version of my thoughts:
THE OC: While it’s slightly odd that THE OC has evolved into the Taylor show, she does do a killer French accent. Julie is foiled again, I wonder how she’ll redeem herself? Summer/Pancakes/Seth — adorable. One thing confuses me though, did they break up? Or are they on a ‘break’?
UGLY BETTY: For all her brains and beauty, Sophia really isn’t that smart. Publicly humiliating your bosses son doesn’t seem like the way to make it to the top. Sure your magazine launch is a huge success, but if I were boss, the closest you’d be getting to issue #2 is when you’re forced to buy it on the newstand while waiting in line in the unemployment line.
GREY’S ANATOMY: T.R. Knight gave his finest performance yet on last night’s edition of GREY’S. His scene with Meredith outside the hospital room was heartbreaking. Izzie finally deposits her inheritance — it’s about time. Obviously she’s going to want to donate to that poor girl with the spinal problem. My theory, in order to avoid getting to connected to every needy patient, Izzie will donate the money to the hospital and create the ‘Denny Wing’. Finally, can’t talk GREY’S without mentioning Seattle Grace’s hottest new couple (to be) — Addison and Alex. Can’t wait to see the inevitable fistfight between McSteamy and Alex.
THE OFFICE: Last night was all about Dwight, but in a good way. Firstly, as somewhat insane as he is, I love how the writers actually make him good at his job. The phone ploy he pulled with Jim was quite clever and at least give us viewers a plausible reason as to how Dunder Mifflin actually stays in business. Dwight also stayed trued to himself by protecting Angela’s honor, and quitting (gasp!) Dunder Mifflin. Perhaps I missed it, but how on earth did NBC not over-hype this completely with endless “Someone is quitting THE OFFICE” promos all week long?
SCRUBS: For six years Carla was the character who was always in control. Seeing Carla actually admit defeat was quite shocking — especially listening to her conversation with Jordan. Serious props goes to SCRUBS for once again handling the delicate subject of postpartum depression with such realism and dignity. Also, I love how Jordan is portrayed as this Godzilla-like pregnant woman (As she stomps down the hallways of Sacred Heart with “Isn’t She Lovely…” playing in the background). Talk about serious therapy for Jordan’s real-life husband Bill Lawrence!
30 ROCK: Last night’s episode of 30 ROCK was no doubt the series best to date. I would pay anything to watch Jenna’s film “Rural Juror”. More then that, two hilarious cameos by Whoopie Goldberg, and another hilarious performance by Alec Baldwin. This show keeps getting better and better. All that’s left is for NBC/Universal/Ge to actually start producing those Meat Machines™ (Knowing NBC marketing, no doubt plans are already in the work!)
Thursday Night TV MADNESS!
With the second half of the TV season in full swing, I once again have to kiss the TV Gods for bringing me my Rogers HD PVR. Tonight I’ve got a mere five and a half hours of TV on my plate. But thanks to the odd Canadian TV schedule, timeshifting, and of course, my PVR — I will somehow manage to get it all in. My schedule in case you’re wondering.
6:30PM — Pick up some POPEYE’S Chicken Strips (Best Spicy Chicken Strips: Hands Down!)
7PM — THE OC (CTV airs it two hours early!)
8PM — UGLY BETTY, the first normal, new episode of 2007
9PM — GREY’S ANATOMY, something tells me George’s dad doesn’t have much longer
10PM — THE OFFICE, Michael goes on a sale call with the ‘team’. No doubt hilarity will ensue.
10:22PM — SCRUBS, note: thanks to my PVR — no commercials!
10:44PM — 30 ROCK, Honestly, I laughed out loud when I read tonight’s description —Jenna is excited about the opening of her independent movie — despite its ridiculous title: “The Rural Juror.”
11PM — SMALLVILLE, on the KTLA West Coast Feed. Donna Martin Gradu.. sorry, Tori Spelling guest stars. More importantly, one more week until JUSTICE LEAGUE!.
What are you all up to tonight? Endless hours of TV like moi, or a life 🙂

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Calm Before the Storm
Last night was another fantastic episode of FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and not surprisingly, revolved around relationships, albeit not the ones you may be thinking of.
Coach Taylor and Jason Street: Jason’s family finally served Coach Taylor with a lawsuit claiming he was responsible for Jason’s injury. It’s pretty much a lose/lose situation for everyone involved. While I understand that the Street family needs money, suing the Coach of the town’s most beloved team doesn’t seem like the best idea ever. It will be interesting to see how the repercussions from this lawsuit play out.
Tyra and her Mom: Tyra’s never played a central role on the show, but she’s been a character I’ve always liked. I thought the ultimatum she gave her Mom — forcing her to choose between herself or her Mom’s abusive boyfriend — was surprising, and a nice show of strength on Tyra’s part. It was a beautiful moment, watching her Mom choose Tyra. I know it shouldn’t surprise me that a mother chooses her daughter over a boyfriend, but this after-all television. I definitely expected Tyra to be living on the street until she was adopted by either the Taylor’s or the Riggin’s household.
Matt and Julie: Not much to say except that they are the most adorable couple on TV. It’s nice that the relationship is playing out in somewhat a ‘real’ fashion. If this were ONE TREE HILL, Julie would have already been knocked up and forced to be contemplating an abortion by now.
Smash and Waverly: Smash is way too full of himself. I cannot wait until next week’s episode when his world comes crashing down.
Buddy Garrity and Football: I absolutely love Buddy Garrity. His obsession with the Dillon Panthers makes me smile every-time he’s on the screen. In a town with some serious issues, Buddy Garrity is that welcome bit of comic relief that adds a lot to the show.
TWO AND A HALF MEN — Best Comedy? Huh!?
[START RANT… 3…2…1…]
This may shock some of you… but I just found out that apparently I’m not a ‘person’. I know what you’re thinking — “ummm, TV addict, have you been watching a little too much TV?” or “are you high?” The answer to both queries of course is no — although I possibly do watch a little too much TV (but is there really such a thing?).
So why am I not a person you ask? Well it turns out, the ‘People’s Choice’ for favourite comedy at last night’s 2007 PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS was TWO AND A HALF MEN Huh!? Do the ‘people’ not own a TV? Where was SCRUBS, THE OFFICE, ENTOURAGE, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, 30 ROCK, well you get the idea.
Once again, I’d like to meet these people. If you were one of the tens of people who Iclaim to enjoy TWO AND A HALF MEN speak up now! Post below and support your favourite comedy. My thoery is that none of you actually exist. It is no coincidence that TWO AND A HALF MEN air on CBS, which just so happens to air these so-called ‘PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARSDS’. So let’s here, post away… if you dare!
[END RANT]
DEGRASSI Talk — Spoilers Ahead!
[SPOILER ALERT!] So it finally happened. After months of speculation and rumours floating around the net, DEGRASSI finally lost one if its own — JT Yorke, you’ll be sadly missed. While I wasn’t surprised as to who died (thanks to CTV for pretty much giving it away in their promo last week), it was quite shocking as to how JT died. His stabbing was quick, random and didn’t seem to have much purpose — except to say violence is bad (well duh). I find it hard to believe, that even under the influence, some young punk from Lakeview (or was it Lakehead) would randomly stab JT for no apparent reason. That said, the episode was well done overall and provided for some fun DEGRASSI watching. In keeping with this theme of randomness, a few random comments if I may:Why were Ellie and Marco at a high school party? When University students hang out at their old high school it’s not cool, just sad.Why was everybody so emotional at the funeral? If I recall, outside of Tobes, sorry Toby, JT didn’t have that many friends. The award for bad acting theatre goes to Toby. Did you notice that whenever Toby was about to cry, the camera cut away. Someone needs a few more classes at the Armstrong Acting Studio. Why does anyone listen to Manny’s advice? Isn’t this the girl who in recent years has stolen Craig, had an abortion, ended up on Peter’s video camera topless, well you get the idea…Finally, as we’ve learned from FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, it’s never cool to hook up with your best friend’s girlfriend — even if your best friend is dead. Shame on you Toby.
THE L WORD: Season 4 Preview
Last week, I got a very nice email from the Digital Entertainment department of Showtime. Showtime is the new HBO (at least that what we’ve been saying at thetvaddict for what feels like forever!). Dexter is amazing, Weeds is phenomenal. Sleeper Cell is one of the greatest things I’ve seen on television in recent months. Since 2004, one of my favorite shows on TV has aired on Showtime – The L Word. Imagine my surprise when that aforementioned email asked me if I’d like the opportunity to review and discuss the new season of one of my favorites? I jumped on the idea.
For the past four days, I’ve been holed up in front of the TV, watching, and re-watching, the first 6 episodes of Season Four and I must say that it’s fantastic so far. It’s back to the lightness that we got to experience in Season 1. After all the pain and the intensity of the first three seasons, the girls are living and loving as usual, but their bond as a group seems to have grown over time.
For those of you who missed last season, and even those of you who missed the season premiere (which aired this past Sunday on Showtime), here’s a bit of info on where we left our girls and what they‘re up to as the season begins:
