Today’s TV Addict Top 5: Things DAYS OF OUR LIVES Is Doing Right
Generally speaking, there’s more bad news than good being reported about the state of daytime’s soap scene, so a lot of fans were thrilled when last week, NBC announced that DAYS OF OUR LIVES had been renewed for another year. But given last year’s axing of GUIDING LIGHT and the fact that AS THE WORLD TURNS will end it’s 50-plus-year run this September, what is it, exactly, that DAYS is doing right?
Cutting Cast
When the show fired longtime stars Drake Hogestyn (John) and Diedre Hall (Marlena), critics and fans alike predicted the show would go down in flames. Like it rose like the proverbial Phoenix (or should we say Stefano?) with tighter storylines, better scripts and improved ratings.
Letting Everyone Play
While some soaps (and primetime dramas) seem to think characters over the age of 40 aren’t of any interest to viewers, DAYS has been putting its veterans — including Victor (played by John Aniston… and yes, he’s the father of that other Aniston), Maggie and everybody’s favorite lunatic, Vivian.
Say What? Our TV Quote of the Day!
“It was awful this season, as far as I’m concerned. I’m not allowed to say that! [Gasps.] It was very telenovela. I feel like it kind of got away from itself. The whole political campaign seemed to me very farfetched. I mean, I love the show, I love my character, I love the writing, but I felt like they were really pushing it this last season. And with nine episodes, I think they were just squishing too much in. HBO only gave us nine Sundays, because they have so much other original programming—especially with The Pacific—and they only have a certain amount of Sundays per year, so we only got nine Sundays. I think that they had more story than episodes. I think that’s what happened,” revealed BIG LOVE star Chloe Sevigny in a refreshingly frank interview with the A.V. Club.

Channel Surfing: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, LOST, THE BIG BANG THEORY & More!
For a show that prides itself on planning ahead (See: The Wedding Bride), there was something oddly anti-climactic about the lack of clues one (okay, we) could decipher the fab five’s flash forward (pictured above) during the final scene of Monday’s HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. Assuming of course Lily’s giant flower dress wasn’t simply a ploy to distract us from an impending baby bump, and it was mere coincidence that Ted didn’t bring a skank…. err, we mean potential “mother” to Lori’s Lily’s 42nd 32nd birthday party, did we missing something? Or did creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas finally learn a lesson from “the goat” and intentionally avoid painting writing themselves into a corner this time?
News Showtime probably doesn’t want to hear. Our increased enjoyment of Monday’s second season premiere of the UNITED STATES OF TARA was predicated on the fact that for the most part, the episode completelyy lacked Tara’s other states. Is it wrong? Are we crazy? Or is there something to be said for the satisfaction one gets from a straight up family dramedy from the always entertaining mind of Diablo (Yup, we’re still laughing at the term ‘Gayble’) Cody?

Say What? Our TV Quote of the Day!
“Many of you have asked, so here it is … it appears that ‘New Scrubs’, ‘Scrubs 2.0’, ‘Scrubs with new kids’, ‘Scrubbier’, ‘Scrubs without JD’ is no more. It was worth a try, but alas… it didn’t work. zb,” said SCRUBS star Zach Braff, who this afternoon took to his facebook page to take SCRUBS [MED SCHOOL] off of life support by publicly signing the ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ order. Ouch.
