Funny Business: Rita Volk Talks Tonight’s Episode of MTV’s FAKING IT
Last week drama filled the halls of Hester High, from Karma (Katie Stevens), Lauren, and Amy’s crazy game of truth or dare, to Liam (Gregg Sulkin) and Shane (Michael J. Willett) fighting about Theo. (Keith Powers) I chatted with FAKING IT star, Rita Volk about tonight’s episode, Lauren and Amy’s relationship, and the possibility of Karma developing feelings for Amy.
We saw in the preview for next week that Liam may try to be with someone else. Do you think he will be able to get over Karma so quickly?
Rita Volk: I don’t think he will be able to. He cares for Karma deeply. Shane is on the sidelines telling Liam to get over it, but I sympathize with Liam because this is the first girl he’s cared about. He’s very much torn over her.
Do you think Karma is giving Amy enough space? It seems like Amy could use some time just for her.
In a perfect world Amy would be on an island contemplating her life by herself. She needs that right now. But she has all these people around her like Shane and Karma who want different things for her. Karma is stifling her a bit. Pushing potential girlfriends on Amy just makes everything harder and more awkward. But Karma just wants Amy to be happy, so it’s coming from a good place.
Liam and Shane are going through a rough time right now, do you think they will work things out?
I think so. They have such a great relationship and care for each other. They are each other’s voice of reason in a lot of situations, so I think they’ll work things out.
Amy and Lauren are slowly building a relationship. Do you see them becoming closer as the season progresses? Do you think Lauren can learn to accept Amy and support her in the future?
I do see them getting closer. They both have very personal, painful secrets that put them in that stigma category of society. They’ll bond over being what society deems as “not normal”. They’re living under the same roof too, so they have to eventually ease up on each other. I think Lauren will have to accept Amy because Lauren wants that same acceptance from other people. She knows how hard it is.
The fans of the show have been sending a lot of questions for you and one question that came up a lot was about Karma’s sexuality. Do you think Karma could ever develop feelings for Amy somewhere down the line?
At this point, I don’t know. I think anything is possible, but I think it would be unrealistic to introduce that idea any time soon. Karma is very much still hung up on Liam, and it wouldn’t be right to introduce new feelings for Karma just because that’s what Amy wants. It’s not a perfect world sometimes and we don’t always get what we want. The most real thing for the story right now is to show this unreciprocated love. But I do think there are always possibilities down the line. Never say never!
What’s your favorite moment from this week’s episode?
The ending of it! It’s so sad and bittersweet at the same time. But I can’t say what it is!
What else can you tell us about this week’s episode?
It’s going to be a fun one. We definitely have a lot more Brazilian fans now, which is awesome. And we got to ride a Ferris wheel, which Katie was deathly afraid of. I was making fun of her the whole time, swaying the thing on purpose, it was great!
You can watch Rita on FAKING IT tonight at 10:30 on MTV.

Fall TV Preview: THE FLASH
Starring: Grant Gustin (“Arrow”), Candice Patton (“The Game”), Jesse L. Martin (“Law & Order”), Rick Cosnett (“The Vampire Diaries”), Danielle Panabaker (“Justified”), Carlos Valdes (“Arrow”) and Tom Cavanagh (“Ed”)
Genre: One-hour drama
Premiere Date: Tuesday, October 7, 8 p.m., The CW
Direct Competition: “NCIS” (CBS), “The Voice” (NBC), “Utopia” (Fox), “Selfie”/”Manhattan Love Story” (ABC)
Premise (in 140 characters or less): A book smart twenty-something is struck by lightning, which grants him the supernatural ability to run faster than the speed of light.
Initial Response: Of all of this year’s new comic-based programs, “The Flash” is most sure of what it wants to be.
Conclusion: “Gotham” takes itself too seriously, and “Constantine” isn’t strong enough to come off as slick as it does. Unlike those programs, “The Flash’s” identity appears fully realized from the get-go. This is a superhero drama that’s light on its feet and often humorous. It doesn’t need to be anything more than that to be a decent show, and an asset for the CW. There’s a wildly talented cast at play, including a capable leading man in Gustin, and appealing supporting players in Cavanagh, Martin and Panabaker, but the show feels like it’s being made for a super-specific, teenaged audience. It’s an amusing pilot, and among this year’s better hour-longs, but it’s not for me.
Side note: Valdes’ character wears two different “Big Bang Theory” t-shirts in just the pilot. Three cheers for corporate synergy?
Watch Live, DVR or Skip?: Watch live if you’re already a fan of “Arrow,” or if you just happen to be a sucker for anything related to comic books. Unless you’re a fan of standard CBS fare, or tired reality show competitions, there’s no better option Tuesdays at 8.

Five Things We Loved About Last Night’s SUPERNATURAL Retrospective
Hard to believe that SUPERNATURAL — once a not-particularly-scary monster-of-the-week show — has become one of the funniest, coolest, most consistently entertaining shows on television… let alone that tonight, it’ll kick off its 10th season! But to mark the occasion, the show put together the kind of retrospective that only they could do. So what made the hour so awesome? Read on! [Read more…]
We React to THE ORIGINALS Season Two Premiere!
THE ORIGINALS premiered last night with a pretty action packed episode. The episode began by telling us what the characters have been up to since we left them. Klaus has been holed up in the Mickaelson’s home at Elijah’s insistence while Elijah looks for the wearers of the 12 moonlight rings. Hayley has taken to the woods and rarely comes “home.” And Marcel is still living in the outskirts of town and sleeping with Cami (gross). Francesca Guerrera is in charge of the quarter and the werewolves who spend their days ridding the city of vampires.
The most important development is that Esther is still in the body of a teenage witch. Finn is also in the body of male witch, who also is pretending to be Cami’s advisor for reasons unknown as of right now. The biggest shocker of the night though, came with the reveal the Kol is also inhabiting the body of a human!

Fall TV Preview: MULANEY
Starring: John Mulaney (“Saturday Night Live”), Martin Short (“SCTV,” “Saturday Night Live,” yada yada yada…), Nasim Pedrad (“Saturday Night Live”), Seaton Smith, Zack Pearlman (“Key and Peele”) and Elliott Gould (“Ocean’s Eleven”)
Genre: Multi-camera comedy
Premiere Date: Sunday, October 5, 9:30 p.m., Fox
Direct Competition: “The Good Wife” (CBS), Sunday Night Football (NBC), “Resurrection” (ABC), “The Walking Dead” (AMC)… pretty much all of basic cable.
Premise (in 140 characters or less): An up-and-coming comic gets the job of a lifetime, or so he thinks, when he’s hired to write jokes for an award-winning game show host.
Initial Reaction: Take the comparisons with a grain of salt. “Mulaney” is no “Seinfeld.” It’s not even close.
Conclusion: “Mulaney” was first in contention at NBC last year, but it failed to garner a series pick up. From what I understand, that decision was based on the very same pilot Fox is airing, which, to be honest, seems entirely justified.
The pilot’s an absolute mess. Mulaney is incredibly awkward in his first regular acting gig, and the writing for the supporting cast isn’t strong enough to conceal that. Pedrad, who recently exited “SNL” after seven underserved seasons, plays an obsessive ex-girlfriend, a character we’ve seen time and time again. Short and Gould do the best they can with what little the material gives them. Smith is given the most thankless of roles as Mulaney’s best friend, a fellow comic whose entire story line consists of trying to establish a marketable catch phase. I have no idea what to make of Pearlman’s character, a hipster pot dealer who isn’t liked by any of the others, but still spends time at Mulaney’s apartment.
I’m a staunch defender of multi-cams, but there’s no defending “Mulaney.” It simply isn’t good, and it’s the kind of show that multi-cam haters will use to rag on the format in the weeks and months to come.
Watch Live, DVR or Skip?: Skip it because it made me sad.
