THE VAMPIRE DIARIES Series Finale: Bits, Bites and Bye
Please permit me a personal observation: It has been eight years since Stefan first gazed into Elena’s eyes that day in the cemetery on THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.
Having read the books, I admit that I had been taken aback at the casting of Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert. Dobrev’s dark hair and eyes were hardly those of the blonde/blue-eyed heroine of the book. I was a bit old for her DeGrassi years, and I admit that I was not familiar with her work. But, she won me over as she incorporated the best parts of the “book Elena” and made the part her own.
Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore) was another matter. I had seen him guest star on several series and had no doubt that he would be a star, as well as a fine actor, someday.
Then, there was Ian Somerhalder…Adam Wayne of SMALLVILLE…the man with the fascinating eyes and wicked smile. There only was a glimmer of how far he could take the character of Damon Salvatore back in those days, but Somerhalder took him far and then some.
The other “kids” in the cast were hardly reflective of their characters in the book, but there was a magic there that was unto itself, and before the credits rolled on Episode 1, I was hooked.
Partially, perhaps, because I was rooting for Julie Plec. We had met a couple of times, in what seems like a thousand years ago, through a mutual friend and again through work when we both were young women struggling to make it in a profession that did not look like us back then. I liked her immediately. I was extremely happy for her when THE VAMPIRE DIARIES took flight and owned the night.
Julie was working with Kevin Williamson, who was working with another mutual friend on DAWSON’S CREEK, and whose penchant for storycraft was fabulous.
This juggernaut of talent ensured that THE VAMPIRE DIARIES could be a success at the moment that Plec and Williamson penned the pilot. And tonight, the juggernaut rolls full (secret) circle as our time in Mystic Falls comes to an end, with Plec and Williamson writing us off the stage.
Dobrev returns as Elena and Katherine Pierce, who schemes to burn Mystic Falls to the ground. Perhaps Katherine is justified. I am not sure what constitutes “appropriate behavior” when your doppelganger’s BFF marries your ex. Having never had that problem before, I must defer to Katherine’s devious judgment and consider it within the realm of acceptability.
I am thrilled that I get one more chance to spend time with Katherine before TVD rides off into the sunset. Yes, I admit it. I love watching actors chew scenery when they do it well. Heck, I even delighted at the trained crow who doubled as Damon in the first episodes.
There is not much in the week’s press release to give any insight into tonight’s episode, “I Was Feeling Epic,” which reads, “With the fate of Mystic Falls at stake, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) must fight their greatest enemy for one last battle.”
The guest cast, however, gives a clue about how epic the evening will be. Returning to reprise their original roles are David Anders as John Gilbert, Erin Beute (Miranda Gilbert), Sara Canning (Jenna Sommers), Kayla Ewell (Vicki Donovan), Arielle Kebbel (Lexi Branson), Jason MacDonald (Grayson Gilbert), Steven R. McQueen (Jeremy Gilbert), Michael Trevino (Tyler Lockwood) and Chris Wood (Kai Parker).
Season 8 guest stars Kristen Gutoskie (Seline), Demetrius Bridges (Dorian Williams), Joel Gretsch (Peter Maxwell), Lily Rose Mumford (Josie Saltzman) and Tierney Mumford (Lizzie Saltzman) return, and Edgar Roche and Sebastian Vegas guest.
In addition to writing “I Was Feeling Epic” with Williamson, Plec directed tonight’s episode.
Enjoy a full night of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES tonight when the series retrospective, “Forever Yours” airs at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW and CTV Two in Canada, followed by the series finale, “I Was Feeling Epic,” at 9:00 p.m.
The CW Renews THE 100 for Season 5
There’s some good news for fans of THE 100: the show has been renewed for a fifth season. The show currently airs as a 13 episode midseason series, but there’s no word yet on how many episodes season 5 will have or will the show will return next season.
THE 100 currently airs on Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
The CW also recently made the announcement that freshman drama RIVERDALE has been renewed for a second season, in addition to the earlier announcements that seven of the network’s shows have already been renewed for the 2017-2018 season. Currently the future of THE ORIGINALS, FREQUENCY, iZOMBIE and NO TOMORROW are unknown.
SUPERNATURAL Photos: Werewolf Hunting with the British Men of Letters
Sam told Dean that he’s working with the British Men of Letters in the last episode of SUPERNATURAL and his older brother took the news surprisingly well. After all, the BMOL are doing a good job…for now. But if things go sideways with this organization, Dean wants to make sure the boys have an exit strategy.
SUPERNATURAL is going on a little hiatus, but when the show returns the Winchesters will learn about a werewolf case. Dean is convinced that it’s nothing more than a “milk run”, so Mick Davies invites himself along. While investigating the case the men stumble upon Claire, who is also working the hunt. But Claire ends up bitten and the brothers race against the clock to save her before she is turned. Will Mick try to kill Claire or will he learn a valuable lesson about how dealing with monsters isn’t always black and white?
Browse through photos above for the March 30 episode of SUPERNATURAL airing at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

THE CATCH: Back in Action for Season 2
When we last saw con man Benjamin Jones on THE CATCH, he had turned himself in for art theft in order to save the woman he loved, Alice Vaughan, from getting arrested.
The couple has had their share of ups and downs, but when the show returns for its second season the pair are secure in their relationship. Of course, the biggest impediment to them actually being together is the fact that Ben is in prison. However, Ben and Alice have a plan — one that involves Ben becoming a “good guy” so that he can reunite with Alice after he does his time. At present time they are hoping that Agent Dao can get Ben a deal so that he only serves three to five years. In the meantime, Alice wants to turn her attention to Margot, who has taken over the Kensington Firm. But Ben warns Alice that Margot is not a woman she should be messing with and he doesn’t want her anywhere near his old partner.
Margot, meanwhile, is having trouble establishing herself as the head of the new crime family. As you can see in the preview below her lieutenants aren’t taking her seriously — at least until she literally shoots a man during a meeting — and others are defecting from the organization or their responsibilities.
Back at work, Alice and Valerie are trying to make their company successful again. After the FBI siezed the firm’s computers, files and servers their clients started defecting and their problems are mounting. But they get a new case when Tommy, Alice’s brother, comes to town. Tommy is a bit of a directionless layabout, always looking to borrow money from his far more successful sister. But this time he got notification of an account in his name containing $3 million and the IRS is looking to collect on taxes. The only problem is that Tommy doesn’t know how this money ended up bearing his name, so he hires Alice and Valerie to find the source of the cash.
Finally, we’re also going to be introduced to Agent Diaz in the season 2 premiere and she has an interesting proposition for Ben: come work for the FBI and set up other con men and she’ll arrange for him to get out of prison the very next day. Both Ben and Alice are worried about Ben putting himself in danger just to get out of prison faster, but it’s Rhys who might be the biggest problem in this potential deal.
THE CATCH returns for its second season tonight (March 9) at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
The Big Tease: HBO Unveils GAME OF THRONES Season 7 Premiere Date
Winter is coming… this summer!
After one of the cleverest marketing campaigns in recent memory that saw HBO attempt to melt a block of ice on Facebook Live that culminated in a seventh season premiere date reveal, the Network announced that GAME OF THRONES will return with new episodes on Sunday July 16th at 9PM on HBO.
