Our Most Anticipated New Fall and Winter Shows
Season and series finales have (mostly) aired and now, a week after Upfronts ended, summer is nearly upon us. There’s a lot of original summer programming coming our way, but there’s also the new fall-winter season coming. New shows won’t be debuting for three or four months, but there’s anticipation brewing for the new TV offerings coming down the pipeline. After viewing the trailers for all of the new shows released during Upfronts, we’ve put together a list of the shows we’re most interested in seeing on our screens in the fall.
DESIGNATED SURVIVOR (TV Addict staff who are intrigued by this show: Melissa, Shana, Araceli and Clarissa). “When I first saw the promo for this one, I felt like I was watching the trailer for a movie — not just network TV’s next attempt at coming up with a political drama,” Shana said. Kiefer Sutherland is back and he’s saving America again — but not as a federal agent. This time he’s the mild-mannered Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who gets chosen as the Designated Survivor, even after being told he was going to be reassigned the morning of the State of the Union. Only now the President and his Cabinet are dead and it’s up to Sutherland’s Tom Kirkland to fend off a potential war with Iran and adjust to a job he never wanted. And that’s all in his first night as President. DESIGNATED SURVIVOR will air this fall on Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
______________________________________
CONVICTION (TV Addict staff who are intrigued by this show: Brianna, Rebecca, Araceli and Luciana). “It looks like the complete opposite of Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, so I’m interested to see how that’ll play out,” Brianna said about this new ABC show. Granted, the cancellation of AGENT CARTER was a blow, but the continued presence of Atwell on television is a good thing. In CONVICTION, she plays the former daughter of a President who has wasted her life and her brilliant legal mind. When she gets arrested, her former courtroom nemesis gives her a choice: lead his new unit dedicated to figuring out if people have been wrongly convicted, or go to jail. This is a new shot for Hayes Morrison and it looks like she’s going to take it. CONVICTION will air this fall on Mondays at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
______________________________________
FREQUENCY (TV Addict staff who are intrigued by this show: Brianna, Shana, Araceli and Luciana). “Time travel is in this fall, but this one twists the genre,” Araceli said. Peyton list stars as Detective Raimy Sullivan, a woman who is burdened by the perceived sins of her father. But one day she uses an old ham radio and actually connects with her dead father….who is still alive back in 1996. The information she provides him ensures that he can escape his coming death, but now the pair have to deal with the ramifications of changing the past. And there are some pretty big ramifications. FREQUENCY will air on Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT this fall on The CW.
______________________________________
TIME AFTER TIME (TV Addict staff who are intrigued by this show: Melissa, Brianna and Araceli). “One of my favorite movies ever and the clip looks faithful to the film. I wish ABC would have launched TIME AFTER TIME in the fall,” Melissa lamented. Time travel is a big theme this season, but instead of going to the past, the protagonists in TIME AFTER TIME are heading to the future. After HG Wells invents a time machine, his friend (who he doesn’t realize is Jack the Ripper), uses the machine to escape the police. And Wells, of course, follows him to the future to apprehend him. Thus begins the classic fish-out-of-water tale, with the past meeting the future. TIME AFTER TIME will premiere at midseason on ABC.

ABC Announces its 2016-2017 Primetime Schedule
ABC is the third network to unveil its 2016-2017 primetime schedule during Upfronts week (see NBC and Fox’s new fall schedules). Unlike Fox, ABC isn’t rebooting any familiar movies or properties for the new season, although several familiar faces will be appearing on the network, including Minnie Driver (SPEECHLESS), Kiefer Sutherland (DESIGNATED SURVIVOR) and Piper Perabo (NOTORIOUS).
Shona Rhimes is also continuing her gradual takeover of ABC’s schedule with the pick-up of STILL STAR-CROSSED from Shondaland, which is a continuation of the Romeo and Juliet story. Like both NBC and Fox, ABC is also getting into the time travel game with the new series TIME AFTER TIME, centering around HG Wells, who travels into the future.
Returning series SCANDAL, meanwhile, is being held for midseason, likely to accommodate star Kerry Washington’s pregnancy.

ABC Orders DOWNWARD DOG, TIME AFTER TIME and UNTITLED SARAH DUNN PROJECT to Series
In addition to picking up STILL STAR-CROSSED and CONVICTION, ABC has ordered comedies DOWNWARD DOG and the UNTITLED SARAH DUNN PROJECT. In addition, the network has picked up the drama series TIME AFTER TIME.
DOWNWARD Dog is about Martin, “a lonely, controlling, self-obsessed dog who lets us in on all his thoughts. He tries to set boundaries with Nan [his owner] to make her feel safe. It has been hard on both of them since she broke up with her boyfriend, Jason (Lucas Neff), a musician, bartender and aging millennial. Now, she spends way too much time at work trying to impress her boss and co-workers, and Martin is left at home too much trying to imagine what could be more important than snuggling on the couch with him.” DOWNWARD DOG stars Allison Tolman as Nan, Lucas Neff as Jason, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Jenn, Barry Rothbart as Kevin and Mo Collins as Kim.
Meanwhile, the UNTITLED SARAH DUNN PROJECT (which was formerly known as “The Second Fattest Housewife in Westport”) revolves around “plump Katie Otto (Katy Mixon) [who has been] has been the third fattest housewife in Westport, Connecticut. This is exactly where she wants to be. So when her chubbier neighbor moves away and she becomes the second fattest housewife, Katie becomes determined to regain her title. On a mission, she tries to orchestrate a suitable buyer for her neighbor’s house. But things don’t go according to her plans. She lives in this wealthy neighborhood with her adoring and level headed husband, Jeff, who works in public television and their three less-than-perfect kids. The Ottos live in the only remaining split level house – complete with a single car garage – in a cul-de-sac filled with East Coast glamour mansions. Her Lululemon, green-juice loving neighbors with their fake boobs and perfect hair often give her backhanded compliments for being so ‘real’.” The series stars Katy Mixon as Katie Otto, Diedrich Bader as Jeff Otto, Johnny Sequoyah as Taylor, Daniel DiMaggio as Harrison, Julia Butters as Anna-Kat, Carly Hughes as Angela and Ali Wong as Doris.
In TIME AFTER TIME it’s London in 1893. “H.G. Wells is destined to become a famed science fiction author, but on this evening he’s just a little known writer struggling to get published. He has invited his intellectual friends to show off his new invention—a time machine—but never suspects his late arriving guest, surgeon and friend John Stevenson, is the infamous Jack the Ripper. When the police arrive looking for Jack the Ripper, John sneaks into the time machine and flees to modern day Manhattan with Wells in hot pursuit.” The show stars Josh Bowman, Freddie Stroma, Genesis Rodriguez
and Regina Taylor.
