Character Depth at the Epicentre of Seven Seconds, Netflix’s Remarkable Crime Drama

April 2, 2018 By theTVaddict Leave a Comment

Seven Seconds is a programme that is well worth your patience. About three episodes into the 10-episode Netflix produced drama, and it is hard to know whether it is worth sticking with. It seems an incredible thing to suggest when you look back on Veena Sud’s multi-layered crime drama that has hidden depth at every turn.

The tone of the programme is heavy and intense. When compared with the likes of Bruno Heller’s The Mentalist, which draws you in with its immediate charm, it is something of a risk to leave the viewer waiting for something to happen.

While Seven Seconds, which is based on a 2013 award-winning Russian movie called The Major, was clearly immersed in quality, it was difficult to see what more of interest could follow – a leap that was well worth the effort. To contrast it to Simon Baker’s role as a psychic in The Mentalist, whereby he joins the Californian police force to help solve murders, leaning heavily on his previous experience as a psychic. From clairvoyant readings, which allow him to tell much more about the killer and victim than a normal person would, to reading people’s body language, he used his arsenal of skills to not just solve cases, but to draw in the audience.

So gritty is Seven Seconds, it does not afford the same luxury, and relies on audience loyalty to stay with it from a sluggish start. The programme is based around Brenton Butler, a black, Jersey City teenager, who is hit by Peter Jablonski (Beau Knapp), a narcotics cop who is in the process of transferring divisions. A well crafted opening sequence sets out the drama that is to follow further on down the line. Immediately there is a feeling of hidden depths in each character.

The powerful performances don’t stop there. Clare-Hope Ashitey as assistant state prosecutor K.J. Harper is swimming in self-pity and drive in a contradictory bubble of pain and a will to do the right thing. Her flawed character is drawn out with sublime skill and dexterity in a fine central role.

Regina King as Latrice Butler, mother of Brenton, is a character who goes from brimming with warmth to seething with hate. King’s performance would be done an injustice to be simply described as powerful alone. It is of such pain and love, and the battle of these emotions alone gives profound feeling to her performances.

There are no weak performances here. Michael Mosley is seasoned at this stage, but it was his recent performance in another fine Netflix production, Ozark, that caught the imagination. In Seven Seconds, as investigating detective Joe “Fish” Rinaldi delivers a performance different to that offered by anyone else in the programme.

More understated and without the same apparent depth, his character develops from a loose fit to the whole production who appears to be a bit-part player in the narrative to being at the centre of some of the finest dramatic interplays the show has to offer. Mosley’s character appears flimsy to begin with, irksome at times even. But that in itself is part of the excellence of a performance that leaves you cold, to begin with, but gradually turns up the heat to the point where he is the overlooked heartbeat of the show.

It is the strength of these performances that make you stay when an early lull seems to spark disinterest. But how big a mistake it would be, not to stick with this engaging, wholehearted beauty of a programme.

This is continued in the performances of David Lyons as Mike DiAngelo, Jablonski’s unit leader. The Australian actor and former Neighbours star is beyond convincing as a charismatic leader, seething with a fusion of passion and aggression. His darkness is underpinned by ice-cold eyes that never risks falling into cliché or self-parody.

NCIS Sneak Peek: Never Judge A Book…

Tonight’s NCIS focuses a light on a common problem…misconceptions.

If you will allow me a personal trip down memory lane…

Many years ago, our latest studio wonder-boy, a “Hahhhh-vard man,” as Thurston Howell III would pronounce it, moseyed into the Sound Department, bragging that he “only missed 2” on his ham radio license test.

Mind you, he did this in front of a bunch of guys who designed post-production equipment. Some of it was groundbreaking. As he was greeted by some chortles and a few guffaws, he insisted that this phenomenal feat was only worthy of Harvard MBAs, and pointed to me and said, “I suppose you could do better,” as I giggled.

Not realizing that this “girl in the office” already held a 1st-class FCC license, Mr. Honcho was busy sticking his foot in his mouth while the engineers already were setting up a betting pool.

The Harvard man, making a significantly large salary, pulled out his bankroll and bet against “the girl.” The reason I digress is to illustrate a few points about tonight’s NCIS episode, “Trapped.”

One: Ham radio is fun. And helpful. And not just for the “Poindexters” as Mr. Honcho called them.

Case in point…on tonight’s NCIS, when a petty officer is found murdered on a golf course, McGee (Sean Murray) spends hours on the victim’s ham radio trying to locate a key witness. For those who think that ham radio is a “geeks-only” endeavor, several of my friends were instrumental in helping others after the Northridge earthquake. Sounds pretty heroic to me.

Two: Donating to charity is a good thing. After I aced the test, beating the Harvard man, all proceeds of the pool went to a program for special needs children.

On NCIS tonight, Palmer (Brian Dietzen) asks his co-workers to donate to a charity that builds playgrounds for kids of all abilities, and Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) surprises the team with his generosity.

Note #1: When website instructions explain not to hit the “back” key, believe it.

Note #2: All kids like to have fun. Whether they are a track star or on a walker, kids deserve to have fun.

Three: New NCIS transfer, Special Agent, Jack Sloane (Maria Bello), has a past that is starting to be revealed.

Note #3: Looks can be deceiving. A lot of people are tougher than they look. This applies to Jack Sloane, you, me or the kid with a walker.

The moral of the story: Be kind. Be helpful. Be generous. And never, ever, bet against people just because they don’t look like you.

Guest stars include Rodney To, Eileen Galindo, James Leo Ryan, Ray Stoney, Seth Coltan, Granville Ames, Kaley Ronayne, Mark Berry, Juan Alfonso and S. Zylan Brooks.

“Trapped” was written by Brendan Fehily and directed by Bethany Rooney.

NCIS airs tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS in the U.S. and on Global TV in Canada.

NCIS: LOS ANGELES Sneak Peek: Six Degrees

April 30, 2017 By Melissa Smith Leave a Comment

NCIS LA 8-22 featured image

Every once in a while, there is an opportunity to watch a veteran cast bring a wealth of talent to the screen and show us just exactly how it’s supposed to be done.

That is the case tonight on NCIS: LOS ANGELES when last week’s “to be continued” storyline puts even more meat on its bones.

Just in case you missed last week, John M. Jackson’s character, Retired Admiral AJ Chegwidden, continued to integrate into the boatshed gang. Presumably a replacement for Miguel Ferrer’s Owen Granger, Jackson brings the easy skill of an actor with a lot of experience into a situation in which most of the cast has 8 years working together…a situation that often does not lend itself to incorporating a new player.

(Before I go on, a “thank you” to the producers for leaving Ferrer, who passed away earlier this year, in the credits. Hopefully, Owen Granger will be living happily ever after on a beach with an umbrella drink…or probably a Scotch.)

But back to AJ Chegwidden…in an inspired casting choice, NCIS: LOS ANGELES not only picked an experienced vet to fill the void, it reached back into the annals of NCIS history and plucked a character that was part of the mothership of the franchise…JAG.

Yes, for those of you graduating middle school this year, NCIS was not the original show in the mighty franchise. It was spun off from a series named JAG, about lawyers in the U.S. Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s office.

Jackson originated the Chegwidden role on JAG where he played the original Jethro (not Gibbs) for most of the series’ 8-year run. AJ, aka Albert Jethro, even reprised his role for an NCIS episode with the aforementioned Gibbs.

Now, NCIS: LOS ANGELES has chosen to incorporate AJ and Hetty (Linda Hunt) into a backstory in which Chegwidden was close with both Hetty and Granger during the Vietnam War in which he served as a Navy SEAL, so he should have some bonding opportunities with Sam (LL Cool J).

Two other members of the “old gang” facing repercussions about some issues still affected by their Vietnam stint are Admiral Sterling Bridges and Retired Navy Captain Charles Langston, James Remar and Carl Lumbly, respectively.

Both veterans of dozens of television shows and feature films, Remar is best known for SEX AND THE CITY and DEXTER. Lumbly, CHICAGO MED and ALIAS’s Marcus Dixon, and Remar are both staples in many Warner Bros. Animation series, and Lumbly and Ferrer split voiceover duties on J’onn J’onzz, The Martian Manhunter.

So, as we finish our six-degrees of acting talent, here are the credits for the rest of the NCIS: LOS ANGELES cast: Chris O’Donnell, Daniela Ruah, Eric Christian Olsen, Barrett Foa and Renée Felice Smith.

Tonight’s episode, “Golden Days,” was written by Joseph C. Wilson & Lee A. Carlisle and directed by Ruba Nadda.

NCIS LOS ANGELES airs tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on CBS in the U.S. and Global TV in Canada.

After a week they arrested a Ukrainian immigrant who had worked at the school, and eventually he confessed and was found guilty by a court of law. This 4-episode documentary series examines the main narratives that evolved around the murder that still haunts Israel to this day, 10 years later.
